here’s video and some pictures of Kris and KAB performing at the ALIVE festival last night. From all accounts the crowd loved them…

Thanks for posting these MJ! People are traveling back home from Ohio today, but there should be more videos popping up later, including one of the Q&A session Kris did.

  • KNA

I am glad to see Kris publically embracing more and more of his CCM roots. LLWD had strong religious undertones to it and with his background as a church worship leader I can see Kris being accepted in the CCM genre.

  • girlygirl

someone posted on Facebook this morning that they are on a plane next to Kris. Sounds like he’s heading back out here to L.A.

  • dy77

Yes, KNA, the crowd here definitely was accepting of Kris. I love that he has so much appeal to both mainstream pop and and CCM.

I’ll bring some links over from the headlines thread of yesterday so that people have everything in one place.

Im new to posting (altho I’ve been a follower of this site since AI8) and noticed lots of the KA vids are from transplant42 and snapcracklypop, amongst others and would like to thank them for posting them for those who can’t attend. Ive enjoyed your experiences. :-) He really needs to play LA more often!!!

Thanks for the thread, MJ. That video of Kris and the KAB doing ‘Leave You Alone’ is great. That is such a sexy song.

I can’t wait for people to get their videos posted. Lots of gorgeous pictures here:

That picture of Kris with the Korn dude is so full of lolz. Hee.

I’m looking forward to the Q&A session being posted soon. It’s nice Kris got to meet Toby Mac (if he hadn’t already) – he’s such an icon in Christian music. It would be nice if he made some good songwriting contacts for later on down the road.

I hope Leave You Alone makes the album, it really shows Kris’ bluesy side.

  • musicality

Have to say…I expect to see Kris at a Christian Music Festival. But Korn?

I just love LYA so much, Kris voice is so emotionally in this song. I really hope this makes it onto his new CD. Loved all the pictures I’ve seen so far, and really thought Kris was so great to tweet the pictures that he did, and that they got to do other things besides sing. Looks like the audience and the band had a great time.

Have to say…I expect to see Kris at a Christian Music Festival. But Korn?

That dude from Korn became a born again Christian a few years ago. He left Korn and is now a Christian recording artist. I think he was there with his current band.

  • dy77

I agree, LYA is amazing! I have a soft spot for SMAYA and will always think it should have been more than the Walmart Bonus track

Fourteen Plums has their summary (with lots of links) up:

I like listening to Kris Allen sing — he always sounds good cause he has that natural soul and melodic delivery, and a very good voice. There is a song he did before idol that I saw on youtube called “Beautiful Moon” that really shows how well he sings from the heart and soul. I love that song. I haven’t seen him perform it on all these gigs he does.

Anyway I look forward to his next CD. I really like the first CD. My most favorites there are; Heartless, Written all over your face, Before we come undone, and Red Guitar. And others I like are; Let it rain, Can’t stay away, Bring it back, and All right with me.

  • MissMyEm

Thanks MJ for posting the Alive shows. One thing I always notice about Kris is that if people don’t know him or had the thought…oh he’s just American Idol…they change their opinions after they see him perform. Kris is like a magnet. You see him live, he attracts you. This is so good to know.

  • jasmine

Thanks for the Kris thread — we really appreciate these threads.
Also, thanks to all the people who took the videos & pictures & shared (or will share) the fruits of their efforts with us.

This is the kind of Sunday I love; just keep checking back to see what other excitement has popped up. The treats keep coming all day. Some pictures of the crowd have been posted. Being a multi-day festival you assume lots of folks will be there, but to see the crowds giving it up for your favorite Idol is so wonderful. This is a picture from @xoxEmjayxox that says it all: #krisallenrockstar!

    http://twitpic.com/5h1fg1

@xoxEmjayxox also posted some excellent pictures from Kris’s performance in DC. Thanks so much!

  • songsungblue

Not surprised that Kris is moving towards Christian music. Fully expected that, since like country, it seems to be more embracing. Hell, look at Mandisa. She’s doing better than most of them on that circuit. I’m going to guess that his next album will be either on or marketed to that area.

I’d rather be boiled in oil than listen to CCM, but Kris strikes me as a nice person. It might be his way to stay viable.

  • kmd

I believe that Jason Castro does Christian music now. I am just not sure if that is all he does in that genre of music.

  • lifeisgood

I hope Kris doesn’t go the Christian genre route – not my thing.

Love his voice and his stage demeanor.

  • ross

Not surprised that Kris is moving towards Christian music. Fully expected that, since like country, it seems to be more embracing. […] I’m going to guess that his next album will be either on or marketed to that area.

Kris isn’t moving towards Christian music.
His next album won’t be a Christian album.
His having played one music festival doesn’t indicate a move towards a genre. He played most of the same songs at the Viper Room.

  • luly

    Thanks for the videos!
I think that it’s great that Kris gets to perform in events that have huge crowds.

Just because he did 1 Christian concert, doesn’t mean that he is moving to that direction.

  • Eileen99

Not surprised that Kris is moving towards Christian music.

He isn’t. He said in an interview he was surprised to be asked by the festival to participate but that he was honored to have been. It’s a huge, multi-day event & a chance to play in front of thousands of potential new fans, so it’s kind of a no brainer that he would agree to it. Daughtry and Lifehouse have both played the festival, I believe.

  • girlygirl

Um, Kris isn’t moving towards Christian music. There were a variety of acts at this festival, only a handful of whom are actually targeted towards the CCM market.

From what Kris has said, his next album will likely be pop/rock but with more of a r&b/soul/blues feeling to it than his debut CD

  • Elliegrll

Not surprised that Kris is moving towards Christian music. Fully expected that, since like country, it seems to be more embracing. […] I’m going to guess that his next album will be either on or marketed to that area.

Daughtry played this festival a few years back, but they have yet to release a Christian album.

Kris was embraced more by Top 40/CHR and HAC, since he had two songs that reached top 20 on HAC, one of which reached the top five, and one song that went top ten on CHR, and one that reached top ten, while LLWD couldn’t crack the top 20 on the Christian charts. So, I think he’s in the right genre.

Christian rock stations have started playing a lot of secular music in order to bring in younger listeners, it’s about making more ad money, not what the song is about or the beliefs of the singers. LLWD has a good message, but it’s stretching to call it a Christian song. Just like Use Somebody, How to Save a Life, and You Found Me aren’t Christian songs, but they get a lot of airplay on that format, because of their popularity.

  • Kirsten

Kris was embraced more by Top 40/CHR and HAC, since he had two songs that reached top 20 on HAC, one of which reached the top five, and one song that went top ten on CHR

And Jive was promoting him to Pop program directors for their “What’s New in Q3/Q4 from Jive” session, so they probably think his song is mainstream enough. The PDs seemed to think so too.

  • lifeisgood

From what Kris has said, his next album will likely be pop/rock but with more of a r&b/soul/blues feeling to it than his debut CD

    Sounds good.
I like smart, sexy, strong vocalists: Kris, Cook, and Adam.

  • FaithfulFan

Not surprised that Kris is moving towards Christian music

Kris’s faith will always be a part of his music because being a Christian is a lifestyle and song writers draw on their own life experiences and observations. That does not mean he is moving toward CCM. For example, the INTK lyrics reveal Kris asking for answers and guidance from his higher power when he was thrown into the post Idol whirlwind and that song was used on The Vampire Diaries.

  • Overboard

I just got back from the Alive show. It was so great finally being able to hear the new songs (LYA and Shut That Door) live.

Also, Kris is not going the CCM route. He did the show because it was a huge crowd and itd be stupid of him to turn it down. Not once in his banter did he mention anything faith-related. The only thing different between this show and one of his other shows is that he did Send Me All Your Angels, though he frequently does that anyway.

  • snapcracklypop

ross says: His having played one music festival doesn’t indicate a move towards a genre. He played most of the same songs at the Viper Room.

Yeah, the Alive setlist is pretty much the same as his Viper Room setlist in Hollywood, which includes “Send Me All Your Angels.” The only one he didn’t sing at the Viper was the “Falling Slowly/With Or Without You” mash up I believe, though it was a pretty epic show.

Not surprised that Kris is moving towards Christian music

    lol
His music is secular and his set list is the about the same as usual. Kris has been clear in the past about not doing Christian music. LLWD has a positive and secular message, that’s why it charted on christian chart and The Script are not into religious music as far as I know

  • almondean88

What exactly is CCM? This format seems to be quite broad, encompassing many songs not specifically aimed at that market. Kris certainly has a deeply spiritual side. This is reflected in INTK as well as “On Our Way” from BNS. Kris also sings songs of worship. He was after all a worship leader at NLC. Kris is known for emotionally connecting to a song, but when he sings songs of worship that emotional connection is on steroids.

But Kris also sings love songs, breakup songs, happy songs, and pop/rock songs. His direction for the new album is, in three words from his interview with jambajim, more “soulful, weightier and organic.” If that means capturing more of the sound he gets when he performs live and less of the sound of the typical over produced pop record, I can not wait!!!!

  • jasmine

ONE of the coolest things about Kris’s music is that the lyrics and the moods can fit all kinds of genres, situations, settings. Kris has introduced songs that would fit into pop, rock, alternative, reggae, acoustic, Christian, and so many other “categories” of music. This is a sign of a true artist, and not an individual attempting to take advantage of the “in style” music of the particular season.

  • jasmine

Whoah indeed. That was a great picture, with Kris as a lone figure on that stage in front of so many people. And I did not realize the stage was like that, so that some people could take pictures of his…backside.

When I saw the pic before the concert while the KAB was in a huddle, I was :D. because I saw Kris was wearing a white henley. It is so much fun seeing all the photos .

Back to his music, love the prolong “oh-oh-oh-oh” at the end of LYA, although I kind of miss the agonizing scream 3/4 way through the song (as compared to the first time LYA).

Shut That Door was fun and I haven’t seen SMAYA yet.

Unfortunately, I was not at this concert, but I follow several people on Twitter who were. I must say they were wonderful keeping us in touch with what was happening. I saw Kris’ picture story hour last night before I went to bed (loved that) and this morning all the media started dribbling in. There are some really fabulous photos taken there yesterday by several different people and I thank them for giving me the challenge of savoring each photo.

Kris is just a magnet that draws people to him. I don’t know how he does it. I doubt he knows how he does it, either. It just happens. Love his voice and can’t wait for that Album #2!

  • Masieta

Thanks for the thread, MJ. This is fun – watching the vids and keeping up. I’m so glad Kris hasn’t fallen off the edge of the earth while he’s writing Album #2. I think he is aware how much his tweets and occasional performances like this one keep his fandom happy and wanting more. Can’t wait for the next album and ensuing tour! Anybody have a crowd estimate?? With this performance, the Memorial Day gig, the Pro-Bowl in Hawaii, and the party at the Derby, he’s been getting some great exposure!

Well said Jasmine. I think that’s the appeal of Kris that he does cross a lot of styles of music. Kris has previously said that whilst he won’t do specifically Christian music he will not compromise on lyrics & I really rspect him for that -therefore parents do not have to be concerned about bad lyrics or disrespectful lyrics. He is an artist who also appeals to all ages ..

I work with Alive Fest and got to be around Kris a lot throughout the day. His band was so down to earth and kind, and it was an honor to have the guys there. For all those people freaking out about “CCM”, don’t worry. He is just a good guy who has grown up in the church and has a strong faith. Of course that is going to reflect in his music, but it doesn’t mean he only wants to write for other Christians.

  • sleepinin

I really love Shut That Door – it’s such a catchy little song. I want to dance off into the sunset with it. Glad the weather was good, and it didn’t pour during the show I was a little worried that Kris and Cale would make it. They seemed to be trapped at that airport forever.

Lots of things I love about Kris but the variety of music styles and his artistry is way high up on the list.

    Yep, THIS.

P.s. Kris’s storytime was awesome. I loved it so much that he tweeted a story of their day post-concert.

    The Q&A session is up

    http://www.youtube.com/ameeliu15

  • girlygirl

That Q&A video is awesome — almost 1/2 hour long. Everybody go watch it! :)

  • dy77

Yes, I’m just finishing the Q&A now, and I highly recommend it for all Kris fans. Great questions!(and answers!)

  • sleepinin

Q&A was awesome. :) I almost lost it at the same time as Kris said he almost lost it during the PBS special – I can’t imagine having to keep singing and hugging.

  • FaithfulFan

girlygirl thanks for the q&a video. The content echoes the discussion in this thread! The way Kris explained his song writing process was very interesting. I actually loved the whole interview, he always manages to touch my heart in some way.

I almost lost it at the same time as Kris said he almost lost it during the PBS special

Me too! Did I understand Kris correctly that he did an interview afterward and he cried because it was so emotional for him? How did this interview get past the fans or was it just me that missed it? Did anyone else read/see it?

  • TwigLA

FaithfulFan, I also wondered about that interview after he sang on the PBS special. I don’t recall seeing or reading it. He did say he lost it.

I also cried when he hugged that troop. It really touched me. Hearing that the man was shaking and crying did it to me all over again.

The Q&A session at Alive is a much watch. I can fully relate to what Kris said about writing songs – that it comes from some other place. That is exactly what I’ve always said about my art and occasional writing. I’ve always felt that it was something being channeled through me and definitely not something I can do on demand.

Could someone tell me what Kris was singing or saying when he had his arms wide open? That is such an amazing picture.

  • FaithfulFan

After all this talk about the Memorial concert I had to go watch the video again. I paused the vid as Kris was hugging the military guy. He had both arms around Kris and his head was laying on Kris’s shoulder and his eyes were closed. It was so touching I got all choked up again. I should have known better. The impact of seeing it as a photograph is very emotional. Thanks again Kris for going into the troops and hugging them. I don’t know how you held it together.

  • Mitchel

Daughtry played this festival a few years back, but they have yet to release a Christian album.

The difference is that Daughtry, Kris has struggled with album sales. So CCM could be an avenue for him, considering that Jive has already dropped 2 of it’s 5 Idols that they have signed.

  • nekola

Thanks MJ for the Kris thread. I so love the videos of Leave You Alone and Shut That Door, best versions of both songs so far. Kris and KAB are such dynamic live performers. I can’t wait to see them live again. Kris better do a headliner show in DC for his next album or else. *shakes fist*

ETA: Loved the Q&A video too.

  • girlygirl

    Mitchel

If you watch the Q&A video, you’ll hear Kris talk about whether he’d go that route.

But again, Kris doesn’t have any intention in becoming a CCM artist anytime soon

  • Junior

Thank you, everyone, for bringing all this media together in one place!

I love the way he ends Shut That Door! Epic indeed!

  • Mtlfan

i enjoyed all the vids and the Q&A video. Such a genuine guy, it’s always a pleasure to hear him being interviewed.
The PBS story was touching and i wonder how come we haven’t seen that interview

  • Junior

The difference is that Kris is known to come from a very religious upbringing and the church is a very important part of who he is. And it seems he is getting more comfortable about acknowledging that in public. Didn’t he also give a performance at church for Father’s Day?

Chris Daughtry is also a Christian, and was in a Christian band before Idol.

Neither one has ever had, that I can tell, any problems acknowledging their faith. They both don’t want to be labeled as a CCM artist, their songs are universal.

  • Elliegrll

The difference is that Kris is known to come from a very religious upbringing and the church is a very important part of who he is.

You must not follow Chris Daughtry or his wife. They are also very religious, and come from a religious upbringing. Chris even wrote a song for a Contemporary Christian group that is a single on their album. Daughtry’s song Home, unlike LLWD, made the top fifteen on the Contemporary Christian music chart, and peaked at #12.

Daughtry opened for the Christian band Day of Fire before he came on AI, and he also wrote some songs for them. So, maybe Daughtry is closer than Kris to releasing Christian music. LOL. And here’s video of Chris singing on one of the songs from the Christian group Third Day, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeOVIOKBJcI

Most importantly, neither Kris or Chris have ever been uncomfortable about acknowledging their faith in public, but that has nothing to do with whether or not they only want to produce Christian music.

  • almondean88

    FaithfulFan,
I also had to go and watch the Memorial Day performance again. Once again I was choking up with tears in my eyes. It was fascinating to hear Kris describe the performance from his side of the experience. The whole Q&A was so relaxed and entertaining. Kris is a good story teller.

Going back to the Memorial Day performance, some of the soldiers just towered over Kris. They looked almost protective, putting an arm around him or patting him on the back. It was a very iconic image of the soldier there to serve and protect. And Kris so movingly projected gratitude, affection, and pride.

Finally I got to watch the Q&A video but I had to open a real computer. So, I posted a different link just in case somebody couldn’t open it.

Really enjoyed it, thank you so much Ameeliu for taking that long video.
-Love hearing Kris’ love of telling the pee audition story.
-LOL at Kris describing being a fangirl of Toby Mac means trying to touch his shoes or something.
-Happy that he is excited to share his new music with the fans soon.
-Still can’t believe how he got through singing God Bless the USA.
-Over and over Kris said that he is blessed to be able to do this and it shows on his face. He always has a smile on his face and that happiness transferred to me when I watch his videos, concerts, etc.
-Even for his audition, he just tried to do his best and that’s it.
He said he was stressed during idol, but I did not see it.

    Great Q&A session.

  • Kirsten

Jive doesn’t do CCM. I wouldn’t recommend CCM to Daughtry either even though RCA has dropped 7 of the 12 Idols it has signed. If they are happy doing what they are doing and the label is as well, why not stick with what you like?

So many great pictures came out of this show, thanks to Emjay & everyone else who took them. You can really see how much they enjoy each other & playing together. They are a great group of guys; Kris did a great job putting the band together (and they sound great, too).

  • Elliegrll

They are a great group of guys

One of the best things about these one off performances that Kris has been doing is that since they are with the full band, it’s a good sign that this group will be staying together.

There are so many fun things about this event! From the huge crowds to the interesting/entertaining Q and A to Kris’ pictures and comments about the day and all the great pictures and the full band (happy to see Drew/miss seeing Ryland) being together – just lots of goodness here.

Thanks MJ for this thread - and thanks to those that posted additional info as it appeared.

Haven’t gotten to watch all this good stuff yet, too much going on around me to give it my undivided attention, but really looking forward to hearing Kris talk about the Memorial Day concert. I have watched that video too many times to count because it is so touching.

You can really see how much they enjoy each other & playing together. They are a great group of guys; Kris did a great job putting the band together (and they sound great, too).

This is something that I marvel at quite often after watching KAB videos. At an audition you get an idea of how somone can play the music, but it must be hard to tell how you are going to get along with them for the long haul. These guys just seem to fit perfectly with each other, very family-like particularly with Ryland and Drew seemlessly switching in and out.

dy77 says: I love this picture a friend took at the show so much, I had to post it on tumblr. If you click the picture, it will take you to her FB album from the show. (Not sure if she’s made that album private or public though.)

Yes, I saw that one and it is so great to see that the whole band
was having fun. And why not ?, when you have a lead singer who promotes them like Kris did at the end of the Q&A.

Typical Kris, unselfish. When somebody questioned him about what other music / singers he was digging lately, he seemed apologetic , saying that he was busy lately with his own music that he did not truly have time for something else ( last album was Adele’s).

Can’t wait to see all the videos when I get home.

I can’t stop watching these videos! Kris looks so relaxed, and he’s having so much fun. He’s really come into his own on stage and he’s developing a really good sense for pacing.

    Really want the new CD!

I should have learned my lesson by now. Do not pass on watching a Kris Allen video just because you’ve seen him perform a particular song over 100 times. It’s going to be different and it’s going to be special.

The dancing on LLWD is beyond cute. Come Together … fantastic.

I don’t follow David Cook or on Twitter/Facebook so I maybe the only one who did not know this.

There was a poll for the sexiest man and women in music back in April 13-May 1 for Broken Record Magazine.

Male contestants in the “Sexiest Male in Music” are:
David Cook , Charles Kelley (Lady Antebellum), Kris Allen, Nixon (Framing Hanley), Adam Lambert , Gavin Rossdale

So I guess David won. And from the latest magazine’s interview with Cook, when told he was voted by readers as Sexiest Male in Music, and finding out who his competition was, he said “Has everybody seen Kris Allen? That guy’s a good-looking dude!”

Well, it seems that David is not immune to Kris’s looks and sexiness as well heehee
