Kelly Clarkson, Beyonce, James Taylor Perform at Obama Inaugural

We reported the rumor a few weeks ago, but now it’s official. Kelly Clarkson will perform at the seconds inauguration of President Obama on January 21. The inauguration committee will announce the news officially today.

Kelly will sing the patriotic song, “My Country Tis of Thee.”

The American Idol Season 1 winner, who admits to being a republican, announced her support  of Obama before November’s election. His support of gay and women’s rights ultimately won the singer over.

Also performing are Beyonce, who will sing the National Anthem and James Taylor who is set to croon America the Beautiful,.

An estimated 1.8 million people turned up on the National Mall to watch the historic inauguration of  President Obama in 2009.

I think I have the same taste in music as the Obama’s.   I love all three of these performers.

Yayayayayayayay! Congrats Kelly, and I’m sure she’s going to sound amazing. Great to have confirmation.

Lineup looking goooood so far – JT, Kelly and Beyonce are great picks!

  • Tess

Wonder if she’s picked out her hat yet…she has to have more pizazz than Aretha had or she’ll just be another singer in a long list.  Congrats, though, Kelly and hopefully you won’t freeze.

  • fuzzywuzzy

So cool! I love all three performers (JT is my favorite of all time), and the inauguration date, January 21, coincides with Martin Luther King day this year. I just saw a report that they anticipate fewer people to attend the inauguration this year, but I’m really looking forward to it nonetheless.

  • Larc

I think the official name of the song Kelly will sing is “America.”  It has basically the same melody as “God Save the Queen/King,” the British national anthem.

  • fuzzywuzzy

As I recall, Aretha’s hat got more attention than her performance at the last inauguration. lol I’m sure that Kelly will do just fine, and I’m sure that her vocal performance will be what attracts attention and accolades.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I think that the song has alternate titles, kind of like “Stronger/What Doesn’t Kill You”. lol

  • Larc

I have no doubt Kelly will do a much better job than Aretha did.

Wow, I had nearly forgotten about the hat meme! Good times.

Yeah, I suspect that “America” will just have to sell itself on the vocals. Done.

Awesome coup for Kelly. Now, can they release “People Like Us” as a single?

Finally something good about living in DC!

Kelly Clarkson is a Republican and endorsed Ron Paul in the GOP primary. Her singing by the inaugural ceremony doesn’t mean she supported Obama.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Yes, Kelly did publicly support Obama:

Nearly a year after voicing her support for former GOP candidate Ron Paul, Kelly Clarkson says she plans to vote for President Barack Obama in November.
Calling herself a “Republican at heart,” the 30-year-old Texas native told the Daily Star: “I’ve been reading online about the debates and I’m probably going to vote for Obama again…I can’t support Romney’s policies as I have a lot of gay friends and I don’t think it’s fair they can’t get married.”
But it isn’t just lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues that are prompting Clarkson to switch party lines: “I’m not a hardcore feminist but we can’t be going back to the ’50s.”
She then noted, “Obama is a great guy. I’ve met him and I’m a fan of Michelle, too.”

  • aj rabin

She seems more intelligent than that. She rather see the country go in debt just because the media created a lie that Romney hates women and gays?

  • fuzzywuzzy

I disagree about the media creating a “lie” about Romney, but am not going to discuss that here. It’s OT.

  • aj rabin

I agree the election is over and I moved on. Though im a bit disappointed with people like Kelly s logic

  • fantoo1

It’s funny how the media hated on her for supporting a Republican(Ron Paul), then she is praised for supporting a Democrat.

  • bridgette12

He didn’t hate women and gays, it more like indifference to them and their rights. Crazy stuff like equal pay and the right as an adult to marry who you choose.

  • bridgette12

She don’t have to support him, it’s an honor to be invited to sing at the inauguration. I remember last inauguration, Garth Brookes performed and I don’t what party he was and didn’t care.

  • heartly

Love having this finally confirmed, not that I didn’t believe the original poster of this information.

Here’s a quote from Kelly in The Tennessean today:

Speaking to the Tennessean on Wednesday, Clarkson said she was “floored” to be invited.

“I really have spent a lot of time coming up with a cool
arrangement,” she said. “I wanted to make it special. I’m really proud
to be singing in his inauguration. I vote for him. It’s a proud moment
when you support something, and then you get to be a part of it.”

arrangement,” she said. “I wanted to make it special.”

Oooh! This sounds cool! Looking forward to her performance.

  • supersonic

Well, at least Beyonce isn’t going to caterwaul her way through “At Last” again.

  • LA944

James Taylor and how I love him! All time fave too! Really happy that Kelly will be there too. Very cool.

Here’s a little something I pulled out of my many hours finding JT stuff on the web LOL Hope its OK to post it. SNL 1980 JT and Paul Simon dueting on a coupe of songs (Watch how PS misses the harmony in the 2nd song but covers it pretty well)

  • Van

Huge honor for Kelly! Starting another year with a huge event! Super Bowl last year, President Inauguration this year…. over 10 years and still going strong. You go, girl :)

  • Chris

Its the inauguration – party doesn’t matter, the die has been cast.  George W. Bush & Ronald Reagan were my president.  Bill Clinton & Barak Obama, also my president.

If she voted for him or not, red state/blue state, its still an honor.

  • HermeticallySealed

Romney did that all on his own.  Kind of hard to refute your own words on video, and your own acts.

  • iluvai

I don’t think celebs should venture in to politics.  Celebs have more influence than anyone.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Thanks for posting that video of JT and PS! So cool!

  • Joe Martinez

    Go Kelly!! :D
