As expected, Kelly Clarkson’s All I Ever Wanted debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, selling 254,671 copies in its first week, 70,000 of them digitally.   The set is also No. 1 on the Digital Album chart.

This is Kelly’s first No. 1 album since her debut in 2002. All four of Kelly’s albums have debuted in the Top 3.

Kelly’s smash hit single “My Life Would Suck Without You” has sold over 1 million units in the U.S. alone and dominated the Billboard Hot 100 chart coming in at #1 for two weeks in a row.Congratulations Kelly!   You can catch Kelly performing tomorrow night (3/19) on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and on Oprah Friday (3/20).

This week’s other Idol debut, Taylor Hicksà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ The Distance, entered at 58, selling 9K

Good for Kelly. She will get the Oprah bounce! Don’t know what to think about Taylor’s numbers. I got mine from Target. It’s worth it.

  • Duke

I must say, this album is fucking awesome. It deserves the number 1 spot. I see so many potential hits for kelly on it. This is great/

  • weareallinnocent

    Yay for Kelly.

And, good to see Brian step up his game at Idol Chatter getting numbers out in a more timely manner this Wednesday. Guess the *return* of Ken Barnes this week had an appropriately motivating effect. (Ok, maybe it’s Kelly, but I like my spin alot too. ;-P)

  • Jolene

I think Kelly’s numbers are great for our current economic climate, and I have a feeling this album will have legs. I’m pretty sure it’ll outsell My December, even if the opening week numbers are lower.

As for Taylor…. Um, ouch? I have to admit I thought he’d do better than 9K, because he did have some nice promo going recently. Having his album come out the same week as Kelly is doing him no favors in the comparison game, though.

Also, from my own little corner, happy to see DC is still at 10k. Now that it crossed the Million mark I’m fine with slow progression while we wait for the next single to kick things up – which will hopefully happen sooner rather than later.

  • sma11ie

Snaps to Brian for getting us numbers sooner than expected! 255K is pretty great for March, in this economy. I expect legs for sure. The album has a bunch of hits. So glad it’s gonna be Kelly on my airwaves now instead of Katy Perry… please also, kick out Lady Gaga and the Pussycat Dolls– pretty please?

10K for DC, as expected. Anyone have his chart placement? I’m wondering, was it 51 or 57? Hope we get leaked numbers sometime this week to satisfy my curiousity. Hoping DC gets a big boost next week after his CBTM performance on AI. I’m still confused why they pushed back his add dates to after the performance (I’m hearing 3/31 for HAC and 4/14 for CHR), but hopefully CBTM will ramp up quickly.

  • Trina

My mother in-law loved Taylor when he was on AI and I wanted to buy his CD for her, I couldn’t find it anywhere. I tried like four-five stores.

RCA is so freaking stupid sometimes. Hasn’t LO been out like 7 months? I hope they don’t center everything around this AI appearance expecting it will be these huge launching pad. Really smart to push back the adds date as the CD drops further :rolleyes_wp:

  • weareallinnocent

Do we know when Cook’s performance will air on AI? I’m thinking that’s part of the add date question? Maybe not, cuz I know notta about the biz. Course that doesn’t stop me from speculating, like…

I wonder how much the AI weekly public flogging of Taylor Hicks is hurting him. Personally, I believe that it does. Though I think folks do what they want for the most part, AI does influence and it’s like they’re shaming the audience if they choose to still support someone who they now present as comical and a comparative criticism. That bothers me, since I suspect that Taylor most likely is still under a non-disparagement agreement and AI is not. :-(

(But, then again, maybe this is yet another way to get the public to buy into the “Save” rule — by continuing to remind us that America can get it *horribly wrong* and may need the judges’ and producers’ help. Let’s not forget that Taylor won in Daughtry’s year after all.)

  • Aileen

Cook’s performance will air on 4/1. Current add dates are 4/14 for CHR and 4/13 on HAC according to AllAccess. I assume that there will be mediabase advertising along with radio interviews starting beginning of April and building up to the mid April add dates.

  • Ladybug

Sadly, I think this may spell the end of Taylor’s recording career. Nothing is a sure thing, but it sure does seem that way.

I also had a problem finding the album. It was not even carried at any Walmarts, big or small, around me. Not one.

Target had sold out its copies.

I will order it online I suppose.

  • sma11ie

Current add dates are 4/14 for CHR and 4/13 on HAC according to AllAccess.

    Even later for HAC? Hmmm…

    Cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s performance will air on 4/1.

Really? They’re pre-taping his performance tonight, so TWO weeks in advance? That’s interesting. I wonder who will be the Idol performing on 3/25 then, since Ryan promised an Idol every week. Ooh, maybe Melinda?

  • Jolene

RCA is so freaking stupid sometimes. Hasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t LO been out like 7 months? I hope they donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t center everything around this AI appearance expecting it will be these huge launching pad. Really smart to push back the adds date as the CD drops further

Sad to say that I agree with this whole paragraph. Seriously, LO will go off the CHR charts next week, it held out for a long time and carried its weight better than many expected, but c’mon, this is getting ridiculous. I remember thinking back in Janurary that they would probably release the next single before the tour, I never would’ve believed they’d wait until April. I really just don’t get it.

I’m so happy the album went Platinum already. I’d be angsting up a storm if it didn’t. Sheesh, RCA, can you move any slower?

ETA: Sorry about this being OT. Yay for Kelly’s numbers again!

  • http://emmarude65embarqmail.com carroll

I think that one of the big reasons that Taylor’s cd sold 9k, is because you can’t find it anywhere. If it ever gets in the stores, I’m sure he will sell lots. I want one from Target and one from Walmart. I have been to Walmart 2 times looking.
I have one coming from Amazon. It s/b here Friday. I can’t wait.

  • kimberann

I don’t know what their chart placement is, but Carrie’s Carnival Ride came out in 2007 and Daughtry’s debut came out in 2006. I can’t believe how well they are both still selling. Daughtry isn’t much lower than the fall 08 releases.

“Chalk it up to her announced American Idol appearance or a hot new single, but weekly sales of Carrie Underwoodà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Carnival Ride rose 25 percent, from 10,000 to 12,000 (2.7 million total).

Daughtryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s album sees a slight increase of 3 percent (4,000 for the week, 4.4 million total).

    Poor Taylor. :frown_tb:

Those are pretty good numbers for Kelly.

I bet David Cook will be double platinum by the end of the summer.

  • Niall

255,000 for Kelly is very, very good, especially for a first quarter release. With how well MLWSWY has done on radio she probably could have sold much more if the holiday release timeline had worked out. I count at least four more solid singles on the cd, which should carry it (hopefully ) to double platinum.

As far as Taylor goes, 9,000 is ok for an indie cd. I think he’s a joke but he sold about 5,000 more than I was expecting so he does have a small audience out there that still wants to hear him.

  • http://airincaol.com coco

If only they would have had the JUDGES SAVE season 5…….

  • holeighannie

    If only they would have had the JUDGES SAVE season 5à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

Why, to save DAUGHTRY? It wouldn’t have mattered anyway, he was 4th, that’s not within the parameters of the deal.

  • jpfan

For David Cook to go double platinum by 9/09, the album would have to sell 150K a month for six months. Unless the next single is an amazing, incredible monster hit, that doesn’t seem likely. I could see him selling 10-15K a week with a single that’s a moderate hit though. I’m not quite sure why RCA is delaying his second single.

  • kimberann

jpfan, It does seem like a hard feat for David to attain, but I think it’s possible. I hope that eventually he outsells every other idol. I do think he has the potential. It seems like there is an expiration date for some of the idols. They just don’t sell like they used to. Kelly’s numbers keep going down, Carrie even went down. I doubt Daughtry will be able to hit 4 x platinum again. David is an incredible songwriter so that is in his favor. :biggrin_wp:
Is Kelly’s second single going to be released anytime soon?

  • mismatchrepair

So I’m actually surprised at the numbers for Kelly. It is a lot of CDs….but I expected her to sell a lot more. She has a MONSTER hit single and had tons of promo (I’m not complaining, she deserves it). The crappy economy here must really be hurting her and other artists right now :(

As to David Cook, I’m not worried too much about his sales b/c he already hit platinum. Of course I want them to improve, but to already have reached that benchmark makes each week of lowish sales easier to take ;)

jpfan….maybe the poster meant the end of Next summer? lol :)

  • yeahyeahsure

    Great numbers for Kelly!

Whoa at Taylor’s numbers. Just goes to show how fast Idol fans move on. That’s why it’s important to strike while the iron is hot and accumulate as much non-Idol fans as possible – soemething that Kelly, Carrie and Chris have done.

As for expiration dates, IMO there would always be that one breakout album some lucky artists would get (in the Idol world, those were Breakaway, Some Hearts and Daughtry). I don’t think they’re expected to top that especially given the economy. As long as they stay relevant and churn out hits, they’re already considered as successes.

It looks like it should be a busy summer for RCA – they’re gearing up the 2nd singles for both Kelly and Cook and the lead single for Daughtry.

  • dante

Congrats to Kelly !!! Love her.

Wow about Taylor – makes me sad as I think this cd is better than the last one. :down_tb:

Taylor and David Cook are my top two fav idols ever (although I love many others). It has been much more fun as a fan to follow David’s post idol career with all TPTB support and idol promo.

I still get so offended by the putdowns on Idol of Taylor – IMO they should support ALL their idol contestants past and present.

  • Trina

David has had a ton of promo since signing with RCA so if he didn’t reach a million by this point I would have been concerned. It’s not like he got the Taylor treatment. Touching on what I said yesterday I think RCA expected the ACC promo to help keep sales afloat in between the time LO slides and getting ready for launching CBTM so I can’t really fault them for any sales drops but the change in adds date is puzzling. If the rumors are true the CBTM video is coming out the last week in March ( 3/31 is bouncing around) that seems like an easy opening for it to at least get some AI pimpage.

  • moneeamin

I would like to say Kelly Clarkson’s album would have done better with a stronger economy because she is certainly my favorite Idol, however, these numbers are quite consistent with all of her previous releases. She hangs around the mid to upper 200,000 range. I really believe the album is five singles deep and that should bring this one to numbers higher than My December. I don’t know how quick the drop off will be, however “I Do Not Hook Up” will be out at the beginning of April.

  • Skylark

Happy for Kelly, disappointed for Taylor … AND I will be lighting candles until the May 5 release of Elliott’s CD. After having the highest independent debut by a new artist in the history of the Billboard charts and going gold, expectations will be high. Hopefully he will have the promotion he deserves!!

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

This is really Kelly and Taylor’s thread. I only linked to Idol Chatter because that’s where I got some of my initial information.

So to keep this thread from turning into David Cook central, lets move the conversations about him to the weekly sales thread. Thanks.

  • cheese

Taylor actually sold about twice as many CDs as I thought he would. Hopefully he’ll at least pass Constantine’s numbers with this one, but KLC might be out of reach.

Really happy for Kelly – I like the CD more each time I listen to it.

    Yahoo Music Blog

    The Idol With The Most

    snip
    (US Sales)
Clarkson has sold 9,836,000 albums, as of this week, more than any other contestant in Idol history. She ranks #187 on Nielsen/SoundScan’s running list of the best-selling artists in its history (which dates to 1991)

  • Jolene

but KLC might be out of reach.

Eeeeeeeek. That’s not a good place to be. :(

  • calimari

I’m surprised Taylor’s numbers are so low. This CD is worlds better than the last, although I’ve read that a lot of people are having a hard time getting it (Walmart is claiming they didn’t arrive in the expected shipmet). I think he’ll keep selling some at the Grease tours & shadow concerts he’s doing in tangent with that, and he might get a bump if he performs on Idol. I do think, however, that Idol did him a great disservice w/ the constant bashing of him. If they want people to look at their franchise as a real chance for success, they should help ALL their winners. I mean, he is the only Idol winner who did not come back on the show the following year to perform his single, and then return for the finale. He was only back for the finale. Way to diss the reiging idol at the time, when he just came off the biggest tour they had ever had and his album was just released. Made no sense.

  • tierbee

That’s too bad that Taylor’s CD sold so few :( … well, I have one of them at least, lol. It’s actually pretty good. I picked up Kelly’s & Melinda’s too and they are great. And these Idols are causing my bank account pain… now I’m waiting for Elliott’s :)

  • http://airincaol.com coco

I hope Taylor Hix can take this ugly number(9K) like a man. God Bless the small Unit movers too.

  • mismatchrepair

Clarkson has sold 9,836,000 albums, as of this week, more than any other contestant in Idol history.

That is impressive! However hasn’t she been around longer than the rest of the contestants from AI like Carrie and Daughtry? So is it a fair comparison? Kelly has 4 cds….Carrie 2 and Daughtry 1… I think. Of course that’s not to say that Kelly wouldn’t outsell them even if they all had the same number of cds :-)

  • Easy

LOL….I find it amazing that complete crap like Kelly Clarkson’s new album can move 255k in a week and a solid soul album like The Distance can only move 9k.

I realize there were problems with some of the stores having the record but still.

    Unreal.

  • Lu

Taylor’s is an uphill battle being indie. I don’t think 9k is bad. It seems that he’s just now building radio play and touring. According to rumors floating about he’s got an idol appearance this season. he needs to belt out something off his new cd. he’ll move some units. Remember he’s been under the radar for a while… no pun intended.

  • thesheriff

I normally don’t like the numbers comparisons but on this, i’ll bite.

Clarkson has sold 9,836,000 albums, as of this week, more than any other contestant in Idol history.

Obviously – Kelly’s been around the longest.
Obviously – the 4th album was JUST released and not included in that rounded 10M number.
Obviously – My December didn’t have a chance with the politics.

I also believe only one of her albums has had the advantange of the holiday season following shortly after. And, her first album didn’t have the whole AI “thing” behind her…things really got cookin’ the following season with fan wars for sales numbers. I have to throw that silly part of this whole era out there….lol Economy blah blah blah, internet downloads blah blah…*insert your own excuse here* the list is endless

Her worldwide sales are what’s impressive (to me).

  • latingrl2005

I guess 245,000 people in this country have more taste than the 9,000 who brought that crap.

He’s not the lowest selling idol by accident.

  • chewsday

The Distance is a good album. Too bad Taylor’s crack management team (again!) couldn’t get their act together enough to insure that the CD would be in stores on the release date. Apparently Wal-Mart thought the release date was the 17th!

I’ll go out on a limb and suggest that the CD will keep selling as long as Taylor tours, either in Grease or on his own concert tour. There are so many people out there who don’t even know he has a CD out. The more he travels, gives interviews in each city and performs, the more people will become aware of his new music. And who knows, maybe a song like Nineteen will resonate with enough fans to get some airplay. It seems to be the song that many people appreciate.

Love Taylor’s music or not, you have to give him kudos for being one of the hardest working guys in the business. I admire his drive and determination.

Note to Dingo: If you read this, please give a listen to the bonus track called Indiscriminate Act of Kindness. It’s Taylor at his raw, emotional best, IMO. I think you might like it.

  • hoodathunk

Thank God I know that sales figures are not indicative of the quality of an album.

Taylor, keep on rockin. You put out a damn fine album, and all on your own. You have nothing to be ashamed of AT ALL.

  • hoodathunk

I would also be curious to know how well any of the other Idols would be doing if they had received the same total absence of support from their record company, the radio industry, or the American Idol PTB that Taylor has had after his (well deserved) win.

  • hardkandy

I’m so happy for Kelly.. she deserves all the success! =) And I love that Yahoo music blog about all her achievements and records… amazing.

And aww at Taylor… :( I’m not a big fan of the guy but I do think he has a very interesting quality and I’ve always found it so disgusting the way AI has treated one of their winners. Hope the sales pick up for him somehow…

And I hope all the other idol alumni gearing up to release new albums have better numbers…

  • davidlove

From a longtime Taylor fan, here are some thoughts.

I think it has been established that the Soul Patrol is composed of an older demographic…..could this have bearing on Taylor’s sales considering album downloading skills may be scarce? I had my daughter help me download his album. Haven’t looked in the store yet. But I will. It captures his vibe wonderfully and has a couple of standouts. Seven Mile Breakdown is pure Southern soul. Nineteen should hit the country charts.

There are many who remember Taylor fondly from AI and may feel sheepish in buying his music now because AI has made it him sooooo uncool. The winner who really didn’t.

It makes my heart ache to see AI kick one of their winners. Come on, Ryan – all smiley and snarky , bashing away. Weren’t you the guy who gleefully lolled around on the AI logo with Tay after he killed on Play That Funky Music……..

Millions loved Taylor on his season – his voice, his story, his musical arrangements and performance ability, his personality and sense of humor. He won because he’s a great musician and America loved him.

Now it seems he’s up against the biggest music making machine of our time.

AI producers, you have no soul. And I don’t mean musically.

  • MN Sue

#5 on the indie charts sounds like a better comparison of where Taylor’s at right now.

ETA: Sorry, my link to the Billboard Indie Chart didn’t work.

  • dante

Indiscriminate Act of Kindness (which is the Target bonus track) is just incredible. It is worth it to try to find this if you haven’t bought Taylor’s cd yet and are planning to.

I haven’t heard the Walmart bonus track (Hide nor Hair I think).

This second cd is so much more “Taylor” at his best – it is a shame it is not getting more promo – like on idol.
