Country Vibe is confirming that Keith Urban has accepted an offer to be an American Idol judge.

Sources have confirmed exclusively to The Country Vibe that Keith Urban has accepted an offer from American Idol to sit at the judges table next to Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and a rumored fourth judge that will likely not be Randy Jackson for the upcoming season of the show.

According to their source, Keith will earn $3 million to join Idol. I am perfectly cool with a panel made up of Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey and Keith Urban.

You’ve got Nicki, who will bring a current vibe and a relevance to the proceedings. As a bonus, she’s totally cray cray and will likely have no problem offering blunt critiques to the contestants. Her unpredictability could be a lot of fun.

Mariah is the legend. And as a superb singer and performer, she’s in a position to offer contestants sound advice on the technical aspects of performing.

Besides being HOT. Heh. Keith will represent a genre that’s played an important role on Idol. One of the show’s most successful alums is Carrie Underwood and there have been a slew of Idols, including Scotty McCreery and Kellie Pickler who have had success on the country charts. I’m surprised it took Idol this long to put a country person on the panel.

Now, for that 4th spot? Please move Randy Jackson into a mentoring role. He can hang out with Jimmy Iovine in the back. I would really love a relevant record producer to take that spot. But, I have a feeling they are going to go with a teen idol type such as Nick Jonas, to grab the youth demo.

  • tierbee

I approve of Keith Urban. I just like to look at him and hear him talk. Shallow? Well, hell, I deserve some eye candy after sticking with this show this long ;)

    PLEASE BE TRUE! #IAPPROVE

  • windmills

Yayayayayay!!!! The Country Vibe is legit Nashville media so I’d say they’re reliable :)

Keith is a long time Idol fan, he coheadlined the Love, Pain, & The Whole Crazy Carnival Ride tour with Carrie in 2008, he’s a very generous mentor, he brought Kris Allen along to open some shows for him in 2009 and brought Kris up for a duet during his sets at those shows, he has a good voice and is an even better interpretive singer, a strong songwriter, he’s a crazy good guitar player, and he’s kind of telegenic ;) He’s also an articulate guy when it comes to his music so I think and hope that can translate into his comments as a judge.

  • Jazz_11

Well.. I like him better than Brad P.. LOL

  • fuzzywuzzy

As I wrote in the other thread:

YAAAAAYYYY for Keith!!!!!  YAAAAAYYYY X 1000 for no Randy!!!!!!! lol

“he has a good voice and is an even better interpretive singer, a strong
songwriter, he’s a crazy good guitar player, and he’s kind of telegenic
    ;) ”

No kidding! Plus, he seems like a really nice guy! What a great choice! (yeah, he’s rather telegenic lol)

MJ wrote: “But, I have a feeling they are going to go with a teen idol type such as Nick Jonas, to grab the youth demo.”

Yeah, I think so too. Then, the judges panel would pretty much span every demographic possible.

If this is indeed true…..YEAH BABY!  Yes, I will admit I’m a member of the shallow club too ladies.  Hee!

In all seriousness though, to echo windmills comments, I think he’ll be a great addition to the panel.

  • http://twitter.com/ladymctech ladymctech

I am very very excited. This is coming from someone who gave up on the show last season after Skylar left. An extreme makeover for Idol is on the way!

  • kd29

    Good News!! I like Keith.

  • alterego

YEAH!!!  Idol hit a home run with this.  Keith Urban will be a great judge.  I am glad Country music now has a voice on Idol, as it should.  Way to go Keith Urban!!!

  • http://twitter.com/doesmonaknow DoesMonaKnow

I hope this news is legit. He’s sort of laid back but I figure someone on the panel will need to be.

  • sdmama

Well, this is one decision I can get 100% behind. (And what a bargain!)
He seems to be a nice guy, plus, having country singer is a good thing, judging from how scuccessful Scotty has been.I haven’t heard him in much in interviews before, so sure I will be watching to see what he will bring to the table. Please don’t be the clone of Steven.

  • Valentin432

I followed series 1 of the Voice AUS and one if not the biggest strength of that show was the judging panel.
Keith is a likeable guy and will bring some cohesion to the judging panel, I’m however not optimistic about his chemistry with Nicky and Mariah.

  • ri2

Keith Urban? yum.  But why is his offer less that half of the $8million offer that Nicki M is reportedly going to be getting??

  • http://twitter.com/BamadansPad Danny Latham

Yes!! A real musician is what this panel needed. Singer-songwriter-guitar extraordinare!!!

  • mxaxrxyx

Gee, has there been anyone else mentioned for the fourth slot?  I can’t think of anyone mentioned around here.

  • girlygirltoo

Hope this is true. From what I heard, he was an excellent judge on The Voice: Australia. And we know that not only is he (and Nicole) big fans of Idol, but he has worked with a couple of ex-Idols in the past. He’s a huge star in the country world and he’s hot (o/).

Here he is performing on AI with Kris on the S8 finale :)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngFPdwD3M4I&feature=youtu.be&a

(and as a bonus, here’s Keith making fun of Kris winning AI after Kris forgets the words in their duet during the tour they did together: (starts around

Keith Urban is a good choice.

wooohoo!  the only country guy who’s album I have.  And he is cute too and charming.  Great add for idol.

  • Eileen99

YESSS to this news! I love Keith, I won’t miss a show now, darn it.  Boo to his salary, though, that’s disappointing.

Have a little Kris & Keith doing Boys of Summer on tour.

  • Larc

If these 3 are correct, I think they are going to need a stronger personality than Nick Jonas for the 4th judge.  Plus he may not be able to bring in as much youth demo as some might think.  His demeanor seems to be a bit too mature (read: older than his years) for that.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

Really, we can’t go wrong with either Keith Urban or Brad Paisley!  I like both gents.  But I do not like the fact that it seems so definite about Nicki.  I like Nick Jonas, but NOT a 4 person panel!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

     YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!

Thank you JAY-SUS – Keith Urban made it – eye candy and hotness, lawd hammercy, hahahah…

  • http://www.etsy.com/shop/AdorablyHooked Gwen

I’ll watch to stare at Keith.

  • OffLeash

WooHoo! Great news! He deserved more money too. A great judge and an eye candy. Yummy! What more could one hope for! <3<3<3

  • Kirsten

    I love this choice.

Mariah and Keith have both had successful careers and Keith did a good job on the Voice Australia. Both have past experience with Idol (Mariah as a mentor and Keith doing a very generous duet with Kris), so they aren’t carpetbaggers. (okay, and I love an Australian accent).

    I’m excited!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

Shallow is the new black, lolol… It’s Keith Urban – we’re allowed :) Whoop it up in herr ladies – hot hunk in Aisle 3, coming our way, woo hoo!

  • brightones

Yay for Keith but boo for Nicki.  I really don’t want to watch and listen to her every week, plus she’ll be performing more crap.

I think he deserves way more money than they’re paying him.

  • fuzzywuzzy

“Besides being HOT. Heh. Keith will represent a genre that’s played an important role on Idol.”

But he’s not AS country as some country singers (even I like many of his songs! lol). This upcoming season could actually be exciting!

  • http://twitter.com/thebluemartini Nicole P.

Is there a video or something of Keith critiquing on The Voice Australia? I’m curious to see!

  • fuzzywuzzy

Is it getting hot in here?  lol  Keith is just incredibly sexy. There! I said it.

  • OffLeash

Now we need to hear the good news about Nicki, and I want Nick Jonas if they need a 4th judge. The Jonas Bros are back and seem as popular as ever with the tweens, so NJ should satisfy that age group.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

Finally someone REALLY hot and sexy on the judges panel for the ladies. If the contestants stink, no prob. Just keep the camera on Keith. It’ll make it alllll better.  *twirls and cartwheels in exhilaration*

Hey MJ – you got a bigger picture of Urban? :)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Y5pth5QpgM&feature=related

Love Keith, hope this is true!

  • Kitwana

MJ: I agree that if there is a 4th judge, it will be someone young like Nick Jonas to grab the tween demo. Actually, I can’t think of another young male artist out there right now who could compete with Nick for the spot. Maybe Jesse McCartney? He’s still relatively young at 25 and used to be a big teen idol. If the 4th slot is reserved for a teen idol type, I have to think that Adam is out of the running. It has nothing to do with his ability to judge. He’ll be 31 in January. When you consider that the teen idols today are in their late teens and early 20′s and look even younger, the sad reality is that Adam is too old for the teen idol slot.

  • http://twitter.com/Miztig Miz

LOVe the addition of Keith Urban. He’s worth way more than Nicki Minaj though. That I don’t get at all.

There has been no mention of a teen idol slot.  There’s been mention of a possible Latin artist slot but no mention that Idol really wants a “teen idol” slot.

  • OffLeash

That pic! It’s official!!!! We’re getting a hawt judge for realz!  Woohooooo!!!

  • clearone

AHHHHHHHHH………….enough of the rumours already!  Idol, will you please get off your butts and make some announcements?!!!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

     *bites knuckles*

Urban is SMOKIN’ – He and Mariah are gorgeous and should be in all promo pics… the judges so far are shaping up to be pretty hot… now get us some contestants to match and Idol will rock!!

    *bites knuckles again* Lawd….

  • fuzzywuzzy

I think that the fact that Nick Jonas has been in talks to be a judge implies that Idol is interested in reaching the tween/teen demographic.

  • Kitwana

No Thanks Maybe Idol can find a teen idol type with a Latino background. Two birds with one stone. :) Suggestions?

  • potatorocks

I have liked Keith Urban ever since he performed the duet with Kris.  He seemed like such a good man.  I don’t know anything about Niki and have never enjoyed Mariah’s music but that doesn’t mean I won’t like them as judges.  My vote for fourth spot would be 1. Pharrell  2.Lenny Kravitz  if they are still in the running.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

Yeah, but based on what Shirley Halperin said (and so far she’s been right about Nicki and Keith), they’re more interested in a Latino star.

ETA: And quite frankly, every mention of Jonas has gone over like a lead balloon with the public. That should tell them something.

  • Kirsten

No Thanks Maybe Idol can find a teen idol type with a Latino background. Two birds with one stone. :) Suggestions?

David Archuleta? He’s sweet, but not the most chatty on camera.

Ricky Martin used to be a pop teen Idol.

Are any of those Disney kids Latino?

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

Isn’t Archie off in a jungle somewhere for 2 years doing his Mormon missionary requirement?

Rickey would be great but his name has never been mentioned.

  • HighOnElliott

    MAKE.IT.SO Number 1…….

  • OffLeash

True. Shirley had the scoop about Nicki and Keith, and she did say Enrique Iglesias was their #1 choice for the 4th spot. I think they should go for the tweens myself and get Nick Jonas, but I don’t have a problem with Enrique.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

Selena Gomez? Demi Lovato is taken… Enrique Iglesias?

  • Kitwana

Kirsten, Ricky Martin would have been perfect about 12 years ago. The Disney male teen idols are white as far as I can tell. Selena is Latina but I doubt they want a 3rd woman on the panel. If David Archuleta left his mission to be an American Idol judge, I think the LDS church would kick him out lol.

  • Kirsten

Isn’t Archie off in a jungle somewhere for 2 years doing his Mormon missionary requirement?

I thought so too, but somehow he is released an album. I’m thinking the rules might not be as strict as we were first led to believe. Maybe he can do missionary work in the jungle that is LA?

Rickey would be great but his name has never been mentioned.

All the more reason to suspect him! It’s the quite ones like Keith that sneak up on us.

Isn’t Selina Gomez Latina? She can drag in all of Beiber’s fans if they don’t hate her for dating him. She’s one of those Disney Kids…I think.

Replace Minaj with Kayne (he’s way more articulate while he’s in full ego-cray-cray mode) and you’ve got a panel that could work!

  • OffLeash

Archie? No way. He’s in seclusion for months somewhere far far away lol.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

  • p2fan

I am  okay with Keith… fervently hope Adam makes it ….  Mariah, Keith and Adam…   It is all about the contestants… bringing the best out of them

  • everything

In as far as Nick Jonas, in addition to appealing to the tween set, I can also see him filling the middle America, faith and family role. Idol needs to strike that balance between growing it’s audience, but at the same time, not risk turning off current viewers.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

I think Archie pre-recorded a bunch of stuff before he left to release while he’s gone.  You don’t see him around promoting it, do you?

  • OffLeash

I know Enrique performed on Idol some time last season, but I don’t remember him at all.

  • nyc57

I’m very happy about Keith but why are they having a 4th judge when it was such a failure in the past.

  • overthetop1

I love Keith Urban. he’s really talented, smart, articulate, and he was so great to Kris Allen.

  • spinning

Yippie, another WGWG!  American Idol started out with finding pop stars and I wish it would stay that way.  I never hear the country winners after the show cause I hate country music.  I don’t mind Carrie’s music too much as it is more of a country/pop vibe but pure country, like Scotty, is so boring.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

With Urban aboard, IMO Lambert’s chances are slim to none… they have rnb (Carey), hip hop/pop/(Minaj) , country(Urban) – what they need is probably someone who appeals to the teens or young adults… on the fence about Jonas, but I could see them going that direction… don’t see what Lambert could or would bring to the table with 2 -3 spots probably filled… Stranger things have happened, but I don’t think he has a chance…

  • kd29

Archie is pretty much not available until 2014. Not a bad idea to be a missionary in LA. lol I do wonder if some of these judges will last longer than 2 years on AI. I think Ricky Martin would be great. I don’t know why is name has not been mentioned more.

  • Eileen99

The fourth judge should be Nick Jonas or Enrique Iglesias.  The tweens would watch for either of those.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

He is no where near Scotty in style… he’s got more rock in his swag than country to me, which is why I like his music… he can write, play the heck out of a guitar, sings great – has tons of stage presence and charisma – and is a lady killing devil, lol… Urban is not your traditional country artist by no means… even if he were I wouldn’t care – with a face like that, I’d endure the twangiest country, lol

  • Kirsten

    Yippie, another WGWG!

Relax. With one on the judging panel, maybe that will keep the WGWG fans sated (“How do I vote for Keith?”).

For Latino….how about Pitt Bull (love his laugh)? Again, they can get rid of Minaj (yes, I don’t need her form of cray) and find some teenage star to to make the tweens happy (what the heck, one of the kids from One-D must be ready to jump ship by now). Bonus: Pitt Bull will rap on anybody’s album so they can release a coronation song with rap! Pop airplay here we come!

  • Kitwana

No Thanks, I don’t think Chile is a jungle. But that’s a great line! Archie is based near Santiago which I think is a pretty big city. I doubt he’d ever be offered a judging spot but even if he were, there’s no way he’d end his mission to be an Idol judge. Since he left in March, he has not communicated directly with fans even once and has certainly not given any media interviews. He even avoids taking pictures with other missionaries. I think his goal is to really disappear for 2 years while his team manages his career.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

     Rickey Martin , hmmmmmm…. I could go for that…

  • clearone

I guess I’m curious why people are assuming that Nicki and Keith are sure things when there has been no announcement?  Until that happens, they are still rumours.

As for Ricky, he is still on Broadway in Evita and has been signed to write and produce a show for ABC after that.  I’d be shocked if he would work for FOX and ABC at the same time.

  • elliegrll

Yippie, another WGWG!  American Idol started out with finding pop stars and I wish it would stay that way.  I never hear the country winners after the show cause I hate country music.  I don’t mind Carrie’s music too much as it is more of a country/pop vibe but pure country, like Scotty, is so boring.

The second and third winners are a soul/r&b singers.   The fourth is a country singer.   The fifth soul/adult contemporary.   The sixth is a mix of pop/r&b. The seventh is alt. rock.  The eighth pop/rock.  The ninth is a folk rock singer.  The tenth country.  And the eleventh seems to be an acoustic jazz rock artist, we’ll wait and see on him, but he’s definitely not pop.

My point, the talk of finding a pop star was always just a marketing talking point.  The cast of judges should be as diverse as that list of winners.

  • lac123

TBH, if Idol wants to possibly attract current/past viewers to turn in, they would have Adam on the panel as people are familiar with him.  People like familiarity.  I think it’s down to Nick, Adam and Enrique.  Woo, we may finally have our judging panel soon.

  • spinning

Adam is the only one of the bunch that is fluent on every genre of music except maybe country and that is only because he really doesn’t care for it.  He could sing it if he wanted.  He would be able to critique all styles.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

I don’t like any of his music, but he is another hot piece of man candy, lol… he has lotsa fans, has a famous dad Julio, had a pretty hot song w/Pitbull last year, so I could see Idol courting him…

  • OffLeash

I’m cool with Enrique if they don’t pick Nick Jonas.

  • everything

But even if Keith Urban is traditional Country (which he is not), he more than qualifies to be a judge.  And Country music has always been a popular voting block the show.

  • Kirsten

TBH, if Idol wants to possibly attract current/past viewers to turn in,
they would have Adam on the panel as people are familiar with him.
     People like familiarity.

Eh? That applies to all the former contestants.

Ryan will be there for continuity.

Plus, we are looking for somebody who is a teenager. And Latino. If we combine all that with a requirement that they be a former Idol for familiarity, that leaves us with Scotty! LOL.

  • potatorocks

Ricky Martin is a great suggestion.  I am changing my vote.  1. Pharrell 2. Ricky Martin.

  • Tom22

The really scary thing is not only do i not know who keith urban or niki miranji or that jonas guy is,  I don’t really even know off hand any songs Mariah Carey is famous for.. I must have heard them playing places in the last 20 years but i’ll need to google/youtube search them

  • durbesque

Not being a Country fan, I had to go and check out Keith.  Marvelous!  The kind of interpreter that I appreciate.  A modest voice but beautifully in tune and connected to truth and feeling.  Nice compatible guitar work in the mood of the song.  Well, they got one right!

  • Tess

Isn’t “Country Vibe” just another blog…why would they get an exclusive.  Just wondering.

  • lac123

I’m kinda on the fence why Idol is obsessed with the tween demo (yeah, I know they are the most influential and spend their parents’ money).  Nick Jonas is a has been in that category and Enrique was big when I was a teenager.  I guess just looking back on my and my friends’ tv watching habits during MS, HS and college, I was not too much into television, especially what my parents were watching (embarrassing!).

  • OffLeash

Isn’t Ricky Martin the only singer Idol didn’t talk too? lmao I don’t remember his name being mentioned.

  • kcostell

But why is his offer less that half of the $8million offer that Nicki M is reportedly going to be getting??

His negotiations probably weren’t helped by Idol talking to Brad Paisley at the same time.  Two people gunning for one spot would have meant Idol had all the leverage here.

  • everything

Adam is the only one of the bunch that is fluent on every genre of music except maybe country and that is only because he really doesn’t care for it. He could sing it if he wanted. He would be able to critique all styles.

I think Mariah Carey and Keith Urban are both more than qualify to critque any genre of music.  If I were a contestant, I would soak up every critique they gave me. They have the success to prove it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Li-Wright/100001622678180 Li Wright

$3Mil for Keith Urban????  Uh, I don’t think so.  Even IF Mariah is the “star”, even Randy made more than $3.  Randy was reportedly at $10M.

  • http://openid.aol.com/sajam600 xcited

Is Nicki even signed?  All the Hollywood trades I read say she hasnt signed yet. Im not familiar with Keith Urban except for his wife and that hes from Australia which seems pretty strange for country artist.  I have heard people say he was good on the Australian Voice.  I would have preferred some other country artist but willing to give him a chance.  If they do 4 judges, its going to mean less singing (although with all these high profile judges, the show seems to be turning into an XF/V hybrid with it all about the judges, headlines and fake banter)…and they have to make sure the 4 judges have different opinions – not all the same…If I hear 4 saying you suck or youre great , it gets pretty boring. Randy should be shown as someone who helps the contestants pick songs and work on their staging and styling.  Jimmy could even be left to his next day comment role as the position of Im going to sign someone so I need someone good.  I still wish theyd find a way to incorporate him to the performance show so viewers would hear it before votes

  • teekee

Even if he was available, I can’t imagine Archie ever, ever, saying anthing that would hurt someone’s feelings. Much too kind.

Apparently this is what was said on TMZ tonight:

Alright, this is what TMZ said, “Catch TMZ, Breaking American Idol
News! Someone’s making a huge comeback to Idol, (They flash Paula and Simon, and
then Dunkleman)… Idol comeback next Tuesday)”

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/DY5236XYY2SBL7EJNTK5ROIGMA Madred

The blog is promotion for their “news” show which airs on some country themed networks. They are mostly promotional stories that have little news relevance.

  • wordnerdarchie

I can see Urban being willing to sign on for less money.  He has no tour to work around (he’s still recovering from vocal surgery, isn’t he?)  He’s currently between albums and maybe feels he needs something to keep himself visible to the public.  $3 million isn’t chump change.   And he’s a fan of the show.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/DY5236XYY2SBL7EJNTK5ROIGMA Madred

I have been hearing about Paula possibly coming back for a long time. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if she was a surprise addition.

  • http://openid.aol.com/sajam600 xcited

Since Urban was on the Voice, I have t his question.  Ive seen clips of The Voice in the US, UK and now Australia and all the panels seem to have 3 men and one woman.  Is this how the show is around the world and how the original format was?  Its just interesting to me why theyve done it that way and is it a girl vs the guys or the guys teasing the girl type of atmosphere.

I also wonder when shows like Idol, XF, Voice get sold to overseas markets, how much – if any control – does the original creator/owner have?  We see all the shows often change a lot of the features – sometimes they stick to the formula in year one..>Even a show like Big Brother dramatically changed after year one and from what I understand the US show is nothing like the Brit except for the fact that they live in a house with cameras on all the time.

Just wonder with things like the Battle Round Steal, does anyone have to approve that?  I kinda dont think so but I guess it depends on the original contract.  I bet if that works other countries will copy.  I read the UK is already looking to make changes because their season 1 didnt live up to the hype either…just wondering

So if we do have Mariah, Keith, Nicki, who do you want as the 4th…With those, it really would make sense to have a younger judge and altho Ive never been too keen on that idea, it does make more sense now – but just wondering who? The Jonas kid doesnt do it for me.  One of my ideas – but it cant happen right now- is to have one of the Glee cast…Someone like Lea Michele or Darren Criss – that would be a new flavor —

Considering Idol was looking to cut, they sure are increasing $ spent on the judges at least.

  • OffLeash

Maybe Paula’s back as a mentor?

Or maybe they’re grooming Dunkleman to replace Ryan in the near future. Ryan has so much stuff going on, he might want to leave.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

No. shot.  4th slot will be male.  Unless Paula is willing to work for pennies.

  • elliegrll

Adam is the only one of the bunch that is fluent on every genre of music except maybe country and that is only because he really doesn’t care for it.  He could sing it if he wanted.  He would be able to critique all styles.

How do you figure that?  From my experience, most successful artists are familiar with a lot of different styles of music.  Many have similar backgrounds as far as being involved in music since they were very young.  Nick Jonas is a writer and a musician, Nicki is a writer and has attended a dramatic arts school, Enrique Iglesias has roots in music, obviously, and has been making music since he was a teen.

What proof do we have that he knows r&b, jazz, metal, etc.?

I don’t think it’s a situation where anyone needs to be tested, and no one’s credentials or accomplishments need to be trashed in order to make Adam look good.  It’s just that many of the people who have been mentioned have more accomplishments than Adam, and have been in the industry a lot longer than he has.

Adam might not have a chance, but he would have brought the perspective of someone who’s been there. He would have more of an understanding of what the contestants are going through and help guide them. He might not of been the winner, but he is far from being the loser!

Speaking of teen/tweens, Adam has a larger following of this age group than people think.

Oh yea are we gonna get Enrique as the last slot.  Latin music isnt as hot a it was in the past.  Id LOVE LOVE Ricky Martin and dont know why his name doesnt come up,  I thought his Evita run was going to be over soon…My stillfave was Cher but I know thats a no-go…Im not an Iglesias fan…so they need to find a young Hispanic singer huh?  I think with the panel as its being reported, a youngin could fit in much better…but any current star is not gonna take the time out for Idol (thinking pple like taylor swift)…i guess the other possibility was the former talk of Lambert who would be cheap but not sure what he does to attract new viewers.

  • lac123

Nice!  I always knew Ryan wanted to start sharing his hosting duties again.

  • LA Kim

I liked all of the country stars AI leaked.  Keith is more country lite than Brad.

An example of what I mean is one of my favorite Keith Urban songs is “Somebody Like You” and one of my favorite Brad Paisley songs is “Whiskey Lullaby” which is a duet with Alison Krauss.

  • windmills

Tess: Isn’t “Country Vibe” just another blog…why would they get an exclusive.  Just wondering.

The writers of that blog are treated as official media by all Music Row labels. They are based in Nashville and, just to give an example, were invited to the same Blown Away album listening party followed by Q&A session with Carrie as the main country writer for ABC News Radio and a Premiere Radio Networks producer. They were also among the official media recently invited out to Vegas for the Tim McGraw/Faith Hill announcement of a 10 show gig at the Venetian. The list goes on, but this isn’t some random blog. The blog founders have access to PR/label/management/agents in the country world.

  • everything

He would have more of an understanding of what the contestants are going through and help guide them.

Someone who is genuinely understanding would not have talked smack about other contestants the way Lambert has.  He made it obvious regarding the 4th place finisher from Season 10. And there was his infamous “wiping the floor” slam from this season.

  • elliegrll

I think that Enrique is a good choice, simply because he may bring in another demographic.  He’s sold over 50 million albums around the world, so he’s well known.  He’s in his late 30′s, but still good looking.  A male judge in his 20′s would be good, but I can’t think of one who is at a point in his career, where he can bring in more viewers.

spinning: Adam is the only one of the bunch that is fluent on every genre of music except maybe country and that is only because he really doesn’t care for it.

Why does a judge have to be fluent in all musical styles? No judging panel I can think of ever had every single member of the judging panel fluent in every genre of music.

Heck the original Idol judges weren’t fluent in all musical styles. Simon admittedly doesn’t know much about or even like country. I’m assuming Paula didn’t really know country either. The Voice judges aren’t very fluent either. I doubt Cee Lo or Adam know their country music. I doubt Blake knows his rap/hip hop music. XF has the same problem. Do you really think LA Reid or Britney know country music?

No judging panel is fluent in all types of music. Actually, IMO many current artists only know 1-2 of the main genres & that’s it.

  • elliegrll

That would be funny, if it’s true, but who knows since it came from TMZ.  I wonder if they would give Paula something else to do on the show.  Maybe they will team her up with Randy, and they will be mentors.

  • elliegrll

His negotiations probably weren’t helped by Idol talking to Brad Paisley at the same time.  Two people gunning for one spot would have meant Idol had all the leverage here.

I think that Nicki is the bigger signing right now.   It’s good to land Keith, but signing Nicki will get the show a lot of press.

  • LA Kim

Exactly. Nicki is a way bigger signing than Keith.

  • spinning

“Why does a judge have to be fluent in all musical styles? No judging panel I can think of ever had every single member of the judging panel fluent in every genre of music.”

They don’t.  It is just a nice asset in his resume.  He not only knows all types of music he has sung them and sung them well.  Everything from theatre, to duets, rock opera, rock, pop, jazz etc.

  • elliegrll

Just because someone has performed a song that’s in a particular genre that doesn’t mean that they understand that style of music. Someone performing a country song on AI doesn’t mean that they understand country music. There’s more to studying music than that.

  • girlygirltoo

Well if you want to appeal to both the Latin and teen demographic, as well as bring in someone who the viewers would be quite familiar with, I have the perfect candidate:  Allison Iraheta!  She’s Latina, she’s young (19) and she is an ex-Idol.

There you go — all the bases covered.  :D

  • adamland

Keith Urban is a great fit, very knowlegable in multiple genres of music. On Voice Australia he was always singing along with every song.

  • http://twitter.com/frazzledsoul K

They don’t.  It is just a nice asset in his resume.  He not only knows all types of music he has sung them and sung them well.  Everything from theatre, to duets, rock opera, rock, pop, jazz etc.

He hasn’t been successful at singing them outside of the show.

  • adamland

“Rickey would be great but his name has never been mentioned.”

Ricky Martin is on Broadway right now starring in Evita plus he is in a “talent hold” contract with Universal Television to develop a TV show for him once his Broadway stent is over.

  • everything

He not only knows all types of music he has sung them and sung them well. Everything from theatre, to duets, rock opera, rock, pop, jazz etc.

But he hasn’t sung Country music, Christian music, the standards, folk, rap/hip hop. And there are contestants with this training and background.

  • Kirsten

He not only knows all types of music he has sung them and sung them
well.  Everything from theatre, to duets, rock opera, rock, pop, jazz
    etc.

What does he know about Gregorian chants? How about his experience with Zydeco? All types of music? That’s crazy. Duets isn’t even a genre.

I’ll keep it simple and popular. Please give me an example of a rap song Adam has recorded.

There are a lot of genres out there. Nobody can or has sung all of them. Just because Keith or Mariah haven’t recorded a polka song doesn’t mean they don’t understand the genre and how it’s contributed to the rich musical scene we now enjoy.

And the reason why they are getting judges from a variety of genres is to get coverage. If one judge doesn’t understand the nuances of Reggae, one of the others might.

If Adam is the judge, fine. But he’s not going to be added because he is a musical genius while Mariah and Keith sit there, mouths agape, when somebody sings something that isn’t Pop or Country because they don’t know what that just was. I’m sure they can hold their own and Adam won’t have to give them tutorials on what jazz is. If Adam is added, he’ll be added because TPTB think he can bring viewers and/or buzz.

  • supersonic

Keith Urban as a judge?  Just when I was planning on not watching this season…

  • Jazz_11

LOL.. It’s not going to happen until the fat Fox (lady) sing?.. I agree!!

  • LLA1535

I think it’s a wise choice. Since the show has such a large country fanbase-you want to have them represented on the panel. KU is a hell of a musician–so it’s cool. I have to say that I was wondering if I would watch idol this year. Even tho I know MC is a great singer-I don’t care for the diva thing. I also not crazy about Idol continuing to hire manufactured pop artiss who can’t sing as judges. I don’t get that at all. IMO –they look so stupid critiquing contestants who can sing circles around them.

I don’t like four judges tho–it’s too much talk for me. I would rather the contestants get to sing for more that 90 secs.

  • Ratna12

Oh wow, I guess I will not FF the judges when he is on.
OK, I’m back at re-watching Kris and Keith’ duets again and again.

ETA: …and Australian accent. :) I think he still has it, I need to google it.

  • Kitwana

Girlygirltoo Alison is a teen but she is not a teen idol or even a former teen idol. Plus, I don’t think they’d have 3 women on the panel. Other than the Latino requirement, I think Nick is still the best candidate – male, massive teen idol between 2007-2009 and still very young at 20.

The “making a comeback to idol” rumor is interesting because it could refer to Adam. Maybe Idol does want someone fluent in all musical genres rather than a young teen idol or a Latino singer.

  • cooks

Actually he did have training in opera. He might not of sang Christian, but he did sing “The Prayer” and “Shir Lashalom” in a performance from Yitzhak Rabin’s (the late prime minister of Israel) “Celebration of Life” concert 2005.

Don’t think there is a big demand for folk.

    http://youtu.be/M0RE7Wg9G3I

  • Troy Mccoy

I dont get why people are complaining about how much idol is paying Keith. I seen lots of complaints a while back about how people think they pay the judges too much and now that they cut back the price tag, people complain they arent paying Keith enough. I understand people feel Keith should be paid more then Nicki because he is talented, but let face it as much as some you dislike Nicki right now, she is booming on the scene and is more current and more popular then Keith. Keith is popular in his own light, but Nicki is popular to  the pop world and r&b/rap world and she reach the masses more then Keith.  She should be rightfully making more money then him. I think she would bring more popularity to the show and right now is someone who doesnt need it considering her career is going good. If idol wanted her the price would have to be worthwhile. Everything she releasing is basically certified platinum, singles and both of her albums. Viewers are not researching past credentials , which is Keith has more of then Nicki. All they know is what is more popular and that is Nicki.

If people really want to complain about prices, you should be complaining about how Mariah might be making 17 million, which is more then double Nicki quoted salary and  4x Keith salary. I consider both of them more current then her and both have their music being played on radio and can do without the show at this point in their careers to have good sales.

  • KendraWills

If idol wants Adam, he’ll be a judge and no comments on idol boards will make a difference lol. In fact, all the comments may have helped him, lol. Nothing worse than a response to a rumor that’s Ho-hum.

  • cooks

You say smack I call it an opinion, which he has a right to express. Also, that 4th place finisher did a little smack talking himself, so it’s all good.

    Yay for Keith Urban!!

  • bridgette12

Three million sounds fair for Keith Urban. He’s a cheaper alternative to Brad Paisley who wanted the same pay as Nicki.

  • http://twitter.com/frazzledsoul K

At this point, if Adam gets that judges slot it will *only* be because Idol has an irrational need to force the pop career that Adam has never been capable of creating for himself.

He simply doesn’t have the resume that these other judges do, and is not a viable pop star. With two bonafide pop stars who actually have platinum albums and hit singles to their credit, he isn’t needed. And if Iglesias gets that slot instead of him, it will be because he *earned* that opportunity.

  • LA Kim

In the country world Brad Paisley is greater than Keith Urban.

  • Eileen99

Keith will bring the bonus Nicole Kidman in the audience, too.  Might class up the joint a bit.

The 4 person panel doesn’t work , imo.

  • KendraWills

I think the four person panel will work, with the right people. Idol is two hours now

  • iluvai

I guess AI has become country idol (with a judge from Australia, no less). I love the idea of Nicki Minage as a judge.   Who likes Nick Jonas?  He’s old news.

  • KendraWills

Fox doesn’t.give.a shit about propping Adam up, if they chose him it would be because they thought he could bring something to the table and is a familiar face to the idol audience. Not to mention, he actually gets buzz in the media.

  • bridgette12

I don’t know if Adam is in the running or not and at this point I don’t care. But I do have to say, American Idol is a lot of things, but charitable is not one of them. They never do anything for anyone without a reason. They certainly are not going to waste a judges position on someone who’s not going to benefit them or the show. As for Iglesias, they can do better than him. I would rather put with baby face Nick Jonas than look at that ugly mole of Enriques for a hour.

  • iluvai

    I guess we’ll see.  :)

  • washpd

I think Keith Urban is a great choice! He’s a great singer, songwriter, guitar player, and overall entertainer. I’ve heard good things about his judging on the Aussie version of The Voice as well. And while country music isn’t my particular cup of tea, it’s about the time there was some country representation on the panel. I am not a fan of Nicki Minaj at all, but she would at least bring a current hot pop star to the panel, which I would imagine the show wants if they want to really draw in young pop music fans.

As for a possible fourth judge, from what I’ve seen, Nicki has a really big following with teens, so I’m not sure why they’d need a “teen idol” type for that last slot. Personally, I think the show is making a mistake if they go with a singer/musician-only panel. I think they would benefit from a producer/music executive type on their a la Simon, LA Reid, etc. And no, Randy Jackson doesn’t count because he has proven useless in the role the last few years. What ever happened to that Pharrel rumor?

  • KendraWills

If it is Adam, which I’m crossing my fingers, toes and other associated body parts for, the timing is perfect if the news breaks next week. He’s back from Australia on Sunday I think and his publicist is coming to the US sometime very soon.

  • KendraWills

Oh and I’m excited about Keith Urban!!

  • bridgette12

I don’t listen to either one of them, but I do know neither one of them is as popular as Nicki around the world and they certainly wouldn’t get paid the same as she will on Idol.

  • Troy Mccoy

I vote NO to the four judge panel . Only show who executed the four judge panel good so far is the voice and that is only because the way the rounds and voting process is set up.

  • http://twitter.com/frazzledsoul K

Idol gave Adam a mentor’s slot solely because they thought his career needed assistance. I wouldn’t put this beyond them if they think they’ve got all their other bases covered, especially if he’ll be cheaper than the alternative.

  • KendraWills

I think.Enrique got the mole removed.

  • http://twitter.com/newbornstarr Wally.

    What about Kanyeeeee?

  • KendraWills

The show already has a producer/ executive. They have iovine who takes a big role.

  • ptebwwong

Brad Paisley actually should have the same pay as Nicki. Why? Brad makes a lot of money each year. He makes more than Nicki. He was planning to tour in the winter 2013. Brad was one of the top 20 tours in all genres of last year. He makes about $25 million just from touring.

That means if Idol wanted him to judge they needed to give him money because he will make a lot from his tour which he probably couldn’t do at the same time as Idol.

  • bridgette12

Thank goodness, now if they can remove his bland personality.

  • Kitwana

KendraWills I think 19M/XIX/whatever it’s called and Simon Fuller would have had an interest in propping up Adam through American Idol if he was still with them. Fuller has definitely used Idol in the past to help the contestants he managed. But I agree that at this point, there is no reason why Fuller or Idol would want to prop Adam up by giving him a judging spot. In fact, if the show really did want to make a former contestant a big popstar – and I don’t think it does – I’m pretty sure they’d go with a younger former contestant who would arguably have more time to be molded into a big star.

  • elliegrll

AI has two hour shows now, all the way up until the final two, so the four judge panel is needed.  Hopefully, starting with the top seven, we will still get per contestant, like they did this past season.

  • Jazz_11

He still has a gig in Melbourne until 5pm Melbourne time, so he will back in LA on Monday morning the soonest.

  • LA Kim

Nicki and Ye’ let’s just say AI ain’t ready for that…I love Kanye music but he is total cray and Nicki is good pop music but the two together is too much swagg for middle America.

I know I would watch them over the AI contestants.

  • bridgette12

Just how cheap can they go, they are only paying Keith Urban three million. If they don’t feel sorry for Adam and hire him out of the goodness of their noble, kind hearts, Keith going to be there low budget alternative.

  • elliegrll

I can see the fourth judge making less than Keith, especially if that judge is someone like Nick Jonas.  I think that Demi is making a million dollars or less, and if they sign Adam or Nick, they’d be making the same amount.

ptebwwong, Brad would be making that sacrifice, but what is he bringing to the table?  People in the demo that he appeals to already watch the show.  He probably wouldn’t lure in a younger and advertiser friendly audience.  And probably the second most important thing for the producers and Fox, he won’t bring any new press, buzz or hype to the show.  Like her or not, that’s what Nicki brings.

  • Jazz_11

Idol gave Adam a mentor’s slot solely because they thought his career needed assistance.

Off course you know the reason why Fox/Idol gave Adam that mentor job, because you know someone on Fox/Idol. LOL

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_S3ZGXZCUE2YYOS7QV6QSTKM4SA buffynut2001

The FOX executives, that choose the judges, do not want anything other than a great show and judges wih good chemistry. If they choose Adam, it will be because they think he will make for good TV and add something to the show.

  • Kitwana

The comeback to idol rumor could also refer to Clay Aiken. He does not have the Project Runway judging experience that Adam has but wasn’t he on Top Model?

  • http://twitter.com/Quu3 Q3

Ricky Martin has a new series on NBC – so cross him off the list.
    http://www.tvguide.com/News/Ricky-Martin-Series-1050846.aspx

for judge #4 my money remains on Adam Lambert but, if not, then I go with Enrique.

  • bridgette12

They can’t pay every one of their judges the same and as it looks now, Mariah then Nicki are at the top of the salary cap and everyone else will have to make do with three  to four million dollars.

If Brad can make multi million dollars on tour, then that’s what he needs to do, because Idol is on a budget and they can’t afford him.

  • http://twitter.com/doesmonaknow DoesMonaKnow

Off course you know the reason why Fox/Idol gave Adam that mentor job, because you know someone on Fox/Idol. LOL

But at the time didn’t Ken Warwick pretty much admit it? He gave an interview where he commented on Adam not doing that well and apparently needing the boost that Idol could provide and Adam was like, “I thought my career was going well?” It was considered a huge faux pas on Ken’s part.

  • http://twitter.com/frazzledsoul K

Ken Warwick openly admitted that this was the reason that Adam got the mentor job. It was not a secret. He felt that Adam hadn’t lived up to their expectations and wanted to give him a boost. I didn’t *need* an inside connection to know this piece of information.

Adam’s accomplishments in the real world have never measured up to the hype bestowed on him. Yes, he had a platinum single (that never actually went Top 10 on CHR) and an almost-platinum album, but his latest album is unlikely to even hit gold and his recent singles have been unsuccessful on radio. His pop pedigree is fairly pathetic compared to Minaj and Carey.

  • Niall

Yeah I approve. Love me some Keith Urban. He’s incredibly talented, he’s gorgeous, and that accent!!

  • teacup

I like the addition of Keith! I would have been happy with Brad, too.

For the fourth spot they need a producer or something. Why not Jimmy? He practically functions as a judge, anyway.

If Nicki Minaj really is going to be on the panel, I don’t think Adam will be. They kind of fill the same spot and would be too overwhelming together, imo. She’s such a big, loud, colorful personality and Adam is the same way. So… I don’t know how that could work with them both.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MV64BS4FSISCASL4P656RXAFYQ Kayla

Actually Ken made that comment once during an interview where he was basically asked after months of crappy press for S9 if he was bringing back Adam to help since the season sucked so bad (although put more nicely). He reacted defensively, and tossed Adam under the bus to deflect from the pounding Idol was getting in the media for that season. He did try to walk it back later.

  • Troy Mccoy

Idol has done fine without four judges, so I dont get how it is needed. The judges already drag out what they say, which makes three judges fit nicely on a show like idol. I dont think the show needs four judges to give an opinion, when more then likely one of them is just bound to waste time bouncing off another person critique.

  • ptebwwong

I’m not saying they should pay the judges the same amount. All I’m saying is Brad considering what he makes had every right to request Idol to pay him $8 million. I have seen people online saying he shouldn’t have even requested that much. But if people consider what he would give up I’m not surprised he would request that much. Even if Idol boosts his singles/album sales, it probably wouldn’t make up the money he received from touring.

Judges shouldn’t be paid the same amount. If Keith does really sign for about $3 million, that’s a bargain. Keith considering his successful career & name could have requested more. I don’t think Mariah should be paid that much even if she is a big name artist. Nicki I think is a toss up. IMO she’s not worth $8 million unless she brings the craziness people expect & her being a mean judge. Idol needs a mean judge & I think most people are thinking it’s her. So if she can bring that to the table she might be worth that much.

  • elliegrll

I like Jimmy better in his Monday morning quarterback role, and I think that he feels the same way.  He gets to look like a genius, and the show has someone who is the voice of the viewers.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

Having someone on to mentor for a single show is miles away from asking someone to represent the show two times a week for the entire season. The group of producers are going to make a decision on what is best for the show, they are not going to make a million dollar decision based on which artist can they help out. This is all about money, they aren’t fooling around here!

  • Aime Smith

    Keith Urban, me likey!

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ ZsusK

I do love Keith Urban and want him on the panel. But, $3 mil? What the hell? That’s embarrassingly low for someone of his caliber. If that’s true, walk away from that bullshit ASAP, Keith.

  • ptebwwong

For the fourth spot they need a producer or something. Why not Jimmy? He practically functions as a judge, anyway.

Jimmy would be a bad live judge. From that montage on the finale, he kept forgetting J-Lo’s name. I think this was actually something he did often.

Other media people & people who have met him has also said that it seems that he needs time to develop his criticisms. Some people have said that it seems like he reads the public’s comments about the performances (which I think is true) & then uses that as his criticism. Actually, if you look back over the episodes much of the stuff he says is what the majority of online fans criticize.

Even if all this wasn’t true, Jimmy has said numerous times that he won’t do it. I don’t think you can force him to be a judge if he doesn’t want to be one.

  • KendraWills

Clay Aiken hasn’t even been rumored, Adam has, in fact, he was rumored at the beginning of all this circus along with Mariah and Nicki Minaj.

  • LA Kim

How much did Keith make on the Voice? It would probably be approximately the same amount but he gets a lot more TV exposure on AI.

  • snow_ghost

I can’t imagine they are paying Keith only 3 million.    I don’t follow country, but I’ve even heard of him.   Plus he will have Nicole Kidman sitting in the audience.  Maybe they forgot the one and it’s 13 million.

I think Adam may have the 4th spot.  I think if Randy is gone, I could see them wanting a popular former contestant.   It could very well be Clay or any other contestant, but Adam is the only one that’s been rumored.

  • vdawg

Yay for Keith.  I would have been happy to have either Keith or Brad.  I only know Nicki from a few tv appearances and she is a total turn-off for me. She works for Pepsi and Idol has a Coca Cola deal, that may not seem like a big deal but it is.    Keith is a big star,  a member of Grand Ole Opry  and has been a huge Idol fan so I’m happy I will get to see him every week.  I hope he gets as many performance spots that JLo got because he is great in person.

  • p2fan

From Wiki, Adam became active in 2009 while Keith started 1990.  Keith’s platinum were in 2005 and 2008.  I have no objection to Keith being a judge, but to ignore Adam because of his sales is bad judgment. He has been only 3 years in the business. As for fans, I looked at youtube, and my goodness, his viewers is 32 million for  ” if i had you” , 30 million for WWFM.  And to be selected by Queen!!!  Furthermore, he is global, he charted aside from US, AUS, UK, NZ, CAN but also JPN, GER, FIN,HU and SWE.  By now Russians and Ukrainians know him.  To top it all, I find him very articulate and his music background tops which include broadway!

  • http://twitter.com/ploonsh yes

As far as the hotness factor goes, that’s what I wanted Pharrell for… but I’m of course happy for you guys and your eyeballs! ;)
I don’t know much about Keith, but he seems nice and very chill, which I like a lot. I’d be pretty pleased if this was a done deal.

  • KendraWills

Who says all the judges, have to have the same success? Look at XFactor. No way is Demi Lovato as successful as Britney. In fact, her sales are about comparable to Adams I think.

Maybe they want Adam because he provided so many watercooler moments during season 8. Entertainment weekly certainly thought so lol. Maybe they think he has some helpful advice since he’s been through it.

Either way, if he got it. I’ll be ecstatic!

  • LA Kim

    Wiki *snort*

By now I have outed myself as a Glambert and even I LOL at the justification and explanation some of us glamberts post.  The truth is Adam is all that is enough said :)

Besides AI had Ellen Degenres as a judge and she was no singer, song writer, musician or producer etc.

  • elliegrll

I think that their paychecks reflect their status, but also what they can provide American Idol.  Brad probably won’t bring in new viewers, or more publicity, so he’s not going to be paid as much as someone who could provide those two things.  That’s what Nicki is being paid for, and not because she’s supposedly crazy.

vdawg, a spokesperson for Pepsi told Ad Age that Nicki doing the show is not a big deal, and that they don’t have a problem with it.  Based on what the rep said, Pepsi might feel like Nicki’s presence on AI ups her value to them.  She’ll be seen by a large audience each week, which will help people recognize her, when they see her in the Pepsi commercials.

That rep. also pretty much confirmed that AI will sign Nicki.

  • KendraWills

Pepsi has already approved Nicki for Idol. It was an article linked here a few days ago.

I think the issue is people saying that Adam is more contemporary, knowledgeable, and successful than the other candidates, and people who have already been confirmed.

In the big picture, Adam’s accomplishments don’t stack up against Mariah, Nicki, Enrique, and Keith’s.  No amount of exaggeration is going to change that.

  • bridgette12

Brad had every right to request that Idol pay him eight million dollars and they obviously thought he wasn’t worth it. Why pay him eight million, when they are get the cute Aussie for three million?

Do I think Mariah was overpaid, you bet I do. As for Nicki, only time will tell if she’s worth her salary. But sometimes, I find her so fake and irritating and have seen her give some shitty live performances, but she’s selling like hotcakes and is really popular here in the States and abroad. She’s one of the biggest stars in music today and hopefully she can rein in some of the crazy and be a half way decent judge. I don’t think Idol needs a mean judge, they need a honest judge.

  • Triskel4

I approve of this move simply for the hottness factor.  Oh, and he can sing, play music, write songs, and has great stage presence.  Cudos Idol.  A correct decision.  Wow.  I’ve given up on this show pretty much completely the last few years, maybe Keith will hook me back in (and not make me want to ff the judges comments).  Also, 3 judges is plenty.  Four was overcrowded and overbearing.

  • KendraWills

Who says his accomplishments have to match up? Someone saying that Adam could sing many different genres deserved a three paragraph diatribe? Cmon, let’s be real. Fans gush and nonfans minimize. It’s how its always been.

At the end of the day, nothing matters except what fox wants.

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

Who says all the judges, have to have the same success? Look at XFactor. No way is Demi Lovato as successful as Britney. In fact, her sales are about comparable to Adams I think.

Demi Lovato’s two singles from her current album are both certified platinum, and the second one peaked at #4 on CHR. My sense is that BTIKM and NCOE hadn’t quite reached that sales or radio play level.

I’m perfectly willing to believe Lambert would take judging seriously, be articulate, and say things I’d agree with. I’m skeptical that he’s oodles more likely to do so than anybody on the rumored judging team, since these are all people respected in their musical genres, and two of them (Carey and Urban) already have demonstrated their ability to be helpful and coherent (she as a mentor on Idol, he on Australian Voice).

  • wordnerdarchie

It’s very possible that Adam is still in the running.  Imo, he’s inexplicably been the recipient of more good fortune than any other idol other than Carrie & Kelly.  Is he my choice?  No, if he’s selected I’ll probably DVR the episodes so I won’t have to look at him, since I think that most of the time he looks ridiculous.  (I don’t think he’s handsome, stylish, fierce, or whatever other adjectives are used to describe him, but he does have a pretty fantastic voice.)  However, my opinion on the subject of a 4th judge doesn’t matter at all, because idol will choose the person they believe will bring the most buzz and bang for the buck, and ultimately, the most viewers.

On the other hand, there’s no down side to Keith Urban.  He’s personable, experienced, knowledgeable, talented, and very nice to look at. :D

  • KendraWills

Adam was also a mentor on Idol and received praise from the media and some of the contestants as one of the best of that year.

  • bridgette12

Did a great job as a mentor and delivered an amazing performance of WWFM. “If” he’s chosen as a Idol judge, hopefully we will get a couple of performances out of him and maybe throw one in with Queen. If he’s not chosen as a judge, they will have him back on Season 12 as an performer, especially since they talked to him about a judges spot.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

Think of all the boobs on display you will be missing!
Mariah and Nicki will be trying to outdo each other on how much they can show and get by with! That is what I’m looking forward to! :)

  • wordnerdarchie

LOL!  Maybe I like looking at Mariah & Nicki so I’ll be pausing on them? ;)  DVR gives you so many options.

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

Did a great job as a mentor and delivered an amazing performance of WWFM.

I’m sure Lambert was wonderful in both roles, and I’m still probably looking forward to seeing him perform at the Arizona State Fair.

Personally, I’m glad we seem to be getting a panel where, as well as proven track record of helpful critiques, the members offer longevity of career (Carey and Urban), a track record of big hits (all three), a large and young fan base (Minaj, though I wouldn’t rule out Urban), and representation of a variety of genres (R&B/pop, rap, country). The one element that seems to be missing is a producer, so I’m still thinking wistfully of Pharrell… but a singer with a strong track record in an additional genre (such as the Iglesias Latin/pop crossover rumor) wouldn’t be awful, if we absolutely must have a panel of four.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

Yes, it does! That way, everyone can be happy! :)
It’s all about the contestants anyways, right?

  • Larc

If you could look at Steven, you could look at anybody.  ;)

  • Pippygirl

With the teasing that someone is returning to Idol, it seems likely Adam will be a judge. I think he will be fine as a judge but I think I will be avoiding the season posts here unfortunately. I don’t need to scroll through 857 posts about what Adam wore, what he said and whether or not he should have said it etc.

Keith, Adam and Mariah would be fine as a panel. I don’t care one way or another for Nikki but NO to 4 judges please. 4 judges talking, Randy and Jimmy as mentors….2 hours won’t be enough or for all the hot air blowing around.

If they want to fill 2 hours they can show us more behind the scenes stuff with the contestants. Show them deciding on their songs, working on the arrangements and production, etc. I know I’m in the minority but I would find that stuff interesting. Have former contestants really mentor them-that would be fun too imo.

  • HKfan

Actually he has sung standards, when he was on the cruise ship for nearly a year, they alternated between a couple of different shows including jazz, standards, and a french themed one!

  • HKfan

see comment about cruise ship, his first professional role was singing jazz and standards.

  • whoisthatwoman

    WooHoo.  That.is.all.

  • KendraWills

See, I think Adam is hot as hale and Keith Urban does absolutely nothiing for me at all. Something about his mouth lol.

So, it takes all kinds. It’s great there are do many options to choose from!

Still not convinced Adam has the job anyway even. It might be Enrique. From his “right deal” comment, I think Jonas is out.

  • KendraWills

Demi Lovatos first album sold 513k. Her second album sold 475k. None of her singles for those first two eras (which is where Adam is albumwise).went platinum.

  • suenigma

I think that most professional singers have experience, if not expertise, in multiple genres of music. For instance, I follow Kelly and Cook most closely, and I know that both have backgounds in musical theatre and a fondness for country music, despite their respective wheelhouses being Pop-Rock and Alt-Rock. Cross-genre versatilty is one of the hallmarks of a talented vocalist, IMO. Regardless of how current she is, Mariah Carey is a legend and her pedigree cannot be questioned, not to mention the fact that she has written some truly great pop songs. As talented as I think he is, and as much of an asset as I think that he would be on the judges table, to imply that Adam is a more knowledgble or gifted vocalist than Mariah Carey, or a more popular and current artist than Nicki Minaj, is absurd.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=195101108 Stefan Wind

I just hope with a 4 celebrity judging panel this doesn’t become another The Voice =(. I’m really hoping the 4th judge is an unknown record producer in the same vain of Simon Cowell, Randy, or Jimmy. In would tie the whole group together nicely.

  • suenigma

Wow, those are pretty impressive sophomore album sales for Demi! Who
knew? I wish our Idols had such low percentage drops from their first to their second albums. Also, Demi has TWO US Platinum single certifications, the most recent for “Give Your Heart a Break”. She is also working on her fourth major studio album, which in and of itself is impressive. In terms of Idols, I think only Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, maybe Chris Daughtry, can say the same.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

Why would Demi be expected to have the same type of problem that is fairly unique to AI contestants? The reason why Idols have such large percentage drops for their sophomore albums is due to the fact that the are fresh off the show for album #1. Most artists, like Demi, were not contestants on American Idol and don’t have the sophomore AI slump problem to contend with. There are plenty of artists who get higher album sales as their career builds. Idols are just the opposite, they start out at the top due to the excellent exposure and instant fanbase that Idol gives them.

Fantasia also has three albums, but I’m not sure why the number of albums someone has released is that important. Nicki Minaj has only released two albums. Even Katy Perry has only released two major label albums. Do Christmas albums count? If so, wouldn’t Clay Aiken and David A. have more than two major label releases?

ETA: ITA with your last sentence, as I am a fan of many Idols and all of the judges signed on at this point. There is a huge amount of talent coming from Idol and enough diversity to keep everyone happy, IMO!

  • suenigma

I totally agree about Idol contestant’s career trajectories being somewhat unique. Although steadily declining album sales are certainly NOT unique to Idol contestants, unfortunately. It is the music industry norm, sadly.

Oh, and I was comparing Demi to the Idols in direct response to someone else comparing Adam to Demi. LOL.

I am a pretty big fan of Adam. Obviously I think that he is a fantastic singer, and although I have made it clear that I wish he would focus on his music career rather than taking a judging position on Idol, I will fully support him if he does, and I know that he will make a fabulous judge. That being said, I think that the assesrtions that Adam is so much more qualified/talented/successful than all of the other judges/potential judges in the history of the world are quite silly, and a little off-putting to be frank. No offense to anyone who genuinely believes this, of course.

  • KendraWills

I was comparing Adam to Demi because someone said that his sales should completely exclude him from a judgeship. Demi’s comparable sales were mentioned as well as her judgeship on Xfactor, saying there are other criteria that matter to tptb.

As far as being silly, there are a lot of silly things being said on both sides of the issue. I’m just glad Adam generates interest, sometimes it surprises me that obvious nonfans know more about him than I do lol.

  • snappp

I kind of felt Idol was doomed (for me), until they got Mariah. She certainly has the vocal chops, the career, the hits, and just the experience that she can bring to the table. But with all these rumors that include random non-musical people (or talent) like Charlie Sheen and such, I got really annoyed. Nicki Minaj seems to be confirmed, though not who I would pick as an Idol judge, I guess she will be bring the drama in the panel. Curious how she and Mariah will get along when judging. All I was thinking afterwards was I hope the next pick will be a record label person/producer. I did not want an all artist judge panel. But when I heard Keith Urban, I didn’t hate it. I was a bit relieved, because it wasn’t like…a Kardashian. He’s different from the other two artists, which is good. Not just style and as a singer, but he’s more down to earth and genuinely wants to help up and coming artists (does not seem to be an attention seeker). If they are going to pick out another artist instead of a music industry/label/producer person, then I give up. They can pick any artist they want. Not going to care too much who they pick, because they already got three popular artists (pop princess with career and chops, new wacky pop personality that raps, and popular country star). But so far, I will be watching since Mariah and Keith is in it.

  • Emmuzka

They got Keith for 3 mil, when Brad was asking 8? I guess Idol went with the low budged option. Now I’m crossing my fingers hoping that they’ll hire the original low budged option (per MJ) for the fourth judge :D

  • suenigma

“As far as being silly, there are a lot of silly things being said on
both sides of the issue. I’m just glad Adam generates interest,
sometimes it surprises me that obvious nonfans know more about him than I
    do lol.”

I totally agree that there are lot’s of silly things being said on both sides of the equation! :) Excessive hyperbole is always silly, whether it’s postive or negative. As a fan of Adam, it just rankles because I actually think the overthetop glorification does him a disservice – it just invites opposition and opens him up to mockery.

  • p2fan

Keith  and Mariah  are okay for me.  I am only defending Adam because I truly believe he will make a good judge. That is  why I am  rooting for him.  But if Minaj is there, I think Adam is much better off concentrating on his career.

  • Prime_Minister

The comments here are the reasons why I beg Idol not to hire Adam as a judge.

Adam this, Adam that.  It’s all about Adam…Gahh I’m going to go crazy!

There’s a reason why he came in second place in Season 8.  If Idol wants to consider hiring a past contestant, at least go with a winner.

  • Mateja Praznik

Since voting system isn’t 1 vote/person, you can’t say at least half of the voters like each winner.

  • Prime_Minister

    You’re right – I edited my comment.

  • http://twitter.com/LindsayKempFan Not fit to print

Well, according to Roger Taylor, Adam got 49% of the vote so that’s about right. Plus getting to #2 shows a pretty decent level of appeal - he had to be doing something right.

As a fan of Adam, I will acknowledge that we can be very trying but here’s the thing: if Adam does have a new job (VERY BIG IF), then his fans have a new job – supporting Idol. Do you have any idea how many of Adam’s professional colleagues have gotten major Glambert support for their projects simply because they have collaborated with him?

All the stuff we’ve been doing for him? We will do it for Idol. Guarantee you: twitter trending for the show etc.

I imagine MJ is tearing her hair out at the prospect but I actually think, the way Idol is designed, with the focus on the contestant, it won’t be long before we get as caught up in the contest as anyone. (Of course I HAVE been watching in the last few years so I may not be typical.)

I am very, very happy about Keith Urban – and I’m not even a country fan. And I’m expecting Nicki to be a real card. I prefer JLo to Mariah but people have been so hard on her I’m starting to get protective.

  • vdawg

I was more concerned with what Coke would think about it. They may not want a Pepsi paid peson on the panel.  Is she going to refuse to use a Coke cup at the judges desk. They pay a lot of money for that cup to be on the table in front of the judges.

  • ellen8

Why do they even need a 4th judge?
Four opinions only take time away from the contestants.
It then becomes the judges show.

  • http://twitter.com/eric_ascher Eric Ascher

“I’m surprised it took Idol this long to put a country person on the panel.”Technically they haven’t had too many chances yet. But from what I know, he will be good.

  • luvadamlambert

    Ugh eww

  • http://twitter.com/LindsayKempFan Not fit to print

The Coke/Pepsi thing is what I wanted to know. The fact that Miley Cyrus is out, though, suggests that this has been resolved. Kanye West as a judge would have made sense if they went for Miley over Nicki,

  • http://twitter.com/LindsayKempFan Not fit to print

I’m not. Country stars are very successful, very busy people. That part of the music industry continues to thrive. I’ve never missed a country judge but as soon as it was brought up I could see the sense of it. And Keith Urban has a reach beyond the US and he’s so charming.

  • bscfan

This looks like a very promising panel!  I’m firmly in favor of three judges, but I’m beginning to understand why the producers might want four if they are continuing with the two-hour shows. Last season the babbling of JLo and Randy on and on while saying NOTHING made me want to throw my shoe at the TV. A poster on this board made the astute observation that the producers might have told the judges to stretch out their comments to fill up the time. Maybe it would actually be better– less boring– to have four judges being concise than three judges padding their comments.  Lesser of two evils.

(Though I wish they’d just go back to shorter shows.)

  • ANNIEBA

I loathe country music but at least KU is hot.

  • Jazz_11

I heard Keith has not been on the scene for couple of years due to voice problem? So I think it’s a good move for Keith to take this job, the money for him is probably a bonus. What important is the free marketing and promotion to put his name out there again, while he’s writing a new music for his new album. Looks like Nicole is filming The Nymphomaniac now and maybe it’s in the US.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

Well, if at least he’s back to coke, he might be entertaining as Nicki and Mariah

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

“voice problem”? what I heard it’s more for a “nose problem”, heh

  • Indigobunting

Keith Urban is my favorite musical artist right now:)

I’ve faded away from AI the past couple of years, but I will be back this year!

  • http://twitter.com/Sassycatz Sassycatz

Considering Idol’s unintentional, intentional, or otherwise relationship to the country genre, producing a good percentage of country artists and attracting an audience that loves that music, I think it’s a long time coming to have an Idol judge from that part of the music industry. Keith Urban is a good choice because he crosses over into rock and pop. Many non-country fans enjoy his work, so good move Idol!

As for a possible fourth judge, it worked so well the first time, why not!? Please, let’s give that time to the contestants. I’m sure three judges can say so-and-so didn’t do well or did do well capably enough … that is, if they are willing to do so.

  • girlygirltoo

With Keith, Nicki and Mariah, AI already has the country, pop, rap and r&b genres covered, so, while I think Adam would be a good judge if he was hired, I wonder if it wouldn’t make more sense to have a 4th judge that was a singer-songwriter or an alt rocker to better balance out the panel. Or someone from the Latin music world.

Although personally, I think 3 judges is plenty. Especially when we already have 2 outsized personalities in Nicki and Mariah. I’m hoping that Keith can hold his ground with those two, rather be lost in all their potential diva crap.

  • Jazz_11

hhmm.. dunno. Not a country music fan, but I know Keith coz he is a hottie and off course husband of Nicole Kidman.

  • windmills

Jazz_11: I heard Keith has not been on the scene for couple of years due to voice problem?

That’s an exaggeration. Keith announced in early November 2011 that he’d need surgery to remove a polyp from his vocal cords. As a result of that he was able to uphold his commitment to single song performances, but he had to postpone multi-song performances like a couple Opry gigs. He was ordered not to speak for 3 weeks and told not to sing until February 2012 according to this Reuters interview.

His first post-surgery live performance was at the Opry on February 4th so he was basically out of commission for a couple months. He’s had multiple gigs since then including the All For The Hall concert, at which he was invited to join the Opry. He’s been back to writing and recording for months, and he hasn’t had an interruption in singles on country radio either. His current single For You is t10 at country radio this week.

  • Jazz_11

a singer-songwriter or an alt rocker to better balance out the panel

Someone like Kris you mean?.. LOL. Well.. Adam is also a singer-songwriter though his album is pop funkadelic, but he is a rocker (without “alt” or any other alternative rock) .. he fronted Queen rock band, didn’t he? ;)

  • Jazz_11

HAHAHA.. I give it to you for all the correct info and didn’t I say I heard? I didn’t know the detail of his problem. Not a fan of him or country music. I know him coz his connection of Nicole Kidman.

  • lac123

I think they’re going after Enrique for the final spot because they want an even guy to girl ratio for commentary and “sides” type banter.  But I don’t think Idol and Enrique will be able to come to an agreement (i.e. cheaper for Enrique than what he wants).

I do think that one “genre” Adam has going for him is the “Idol genre” plus, Idol would know what they’re getting with him (and most likely pretty cheap).  Adam may speak his mind in front of the camera, but they know he wouldn’t cause too much drama behind the scenes.

  • fuzzywuzzy

“They got Keith for 3 mil, when Brad was asking 8? I guess Idol went with the low budged option.”

Personally, I very much prefer the choice of Keith over Brad, regardless of the rumored salary difference.

  • windmills

Jazz_11: HAHAHA.. I give it to you for all the correct info and didn’t I say I heard? I didn’t know the detail of his problem. Not a fan of him or country music. I know him coz his connection of Nicole Kidman.

You’re welcome for correcting your inaccurate speculation. It seemed like you were implying Keith needed this because he’d been out of commission for a while and that couldn’t be further from the truth TBH. He’s still a country radio staple, still killing it on his arena headlining tours, still selling well. He is taking some extra time for this new album because he wanted to shake up his creative process, and it seems like that may have worked out to open up his schedule and enable him to do Idol without having to shift things around too much.

I admit I was surprised to see Keith allegedly signing on for $3 million when Idol is a bigger time commitment than The Voice and Blake, who is not as big a star as Keith, is getting $6 million. If the figure is true than Idol is so ridiculously lucky I can’t even begin to describe it. Not that Keith needs the money anyway but it goes to the idea that he’s probably closer to taking this gig for the right reasons than anybody on any of these shows.

  • http://twitter.com/phyllis_0227 CountryOldie

Wow what a great representative for country music. He has used many new artists to headline his shows. He also comes with a background in judging having done it on The Voice in Australia. He will have NO PROBLEM pulling in the country genre which is so huge and so loves him. Am very pleased at the way Idol is listening and doing things that I believe will be great for the show. We will get a more diversified group of applicants I think. And I will be more then happy to hear “DOG” from backstage.

  • http://twitter.com/phyllis_0227 CountryOldie

One other thing. For the first time in a long time I can hardly wait for Idol to start…..

  • alterego

I do think that one “genre” Adam has going for him is the “Idol genre”

If the show is trying to revamp itself and attract newer demographics, I can’t see how having someone, who didn’t win, and who is tanking with his sophomore sales, will help the show.  If anything, it’s just a glaring reminder of the typical post Idol career where they can’t seem to sustain career longevity after the intial buzz.

  • http://twitter.com/cheeseE1 EH

I’ve never heard Keith Urban sing, and I don’t understand his hair, but at least he has an accent and doesn’t wear a gigantic cowboy hat 24/7.

With a 2-hour show, I have no problem with four judges – that’s a lot of time to fill and they are not going to fill it with singing.  Plus there will be a slightly better chance that one of the judges might accidentally say something funny, relevant or interesting if there are four.

  • DB987

Keith brings a lot to the table in experience both as an performer and someone who has done some judging.  He also seems like a really nice guy and I believe he will do  a good job in guiding these kids in the right direction with constructive analysis of their singing and performing.

  • OfficeTen

Just read that Keith made top 10 sexiest country stars.

  • jean1010

I think this panel of Mariah, Keith, Niki and Adam (I think he has this) will be the most star studded and fascinating one ever assembled trumping all the other singing shows.  I will definitely be tuning in.  Good job on this AI!

  • http://twitter.com/LindsayKempFan Not fit to print

Okay – so let me throw a wrench into the works here. You know that rumour about someone making a comeback? What if it’s JLo? What if Mariah was so peeved about Nicki that  she threatened to pull out and they just checked with JLo and…. In that scenario a three judge panel would be fine.

JLo wanted 15 million; Mariah got 18 million. Leave Mariah with 3 for damages and give JLo what she asked for.

  • http://twitter.com/HappenHappen92 Happen Happen

I wonder if it wouldn’t make more sense to have a 4th judge that was a singer-songwriter or an alt rocker to better balance out the panel.

I agree. Kris Allen or David Cook would be perfect for that. I don’t understand why the producers approached Adam and not those two. Kris and David have music that fits better with AI tastes, they are winners, and they don’t jump all over the world so they would be free to accept and they’d be even cheaper. I really don’t get what they’re thinking.

  • http://twitter.com/HappenHappen92 Happen Happen

She certainly has the vocal chops, the career, the hits, and just the experience that she can bring to the table.

So had Steven Tyler. To say that he was completely useless is an understatement.

  • YankeeFan08

They probably didn’t approach Kris Allen or David Cook because neither one has any personality.  At least Cook is articulate, but you can’t even say that about Kris Allen.  More importantly, the  media doesn’t seem to be interested in either one of them.

And let’s not forget, Adam writes songs too.  It’s only on the Idol blogs that he doesn’t get credit for being a songwriter because he doesn’t play an instrument. It’s interesting that media articles often refer to him as a singer/songwriter.  They don’t seem to take issue with the fact that he doesn’t play an instrument.  Sometimes we forget how truly small the Idol bubble actually is.

  • jean1010

I think level of celebrity was probably an important consideration for AI too.  While I like Kris and Cook, they are both low key on the celebrity scale while Adam, love him or hate him, is far more visible on measures of public interest i.e. Google searches, news stories, video views and social media than either.  As a concrete example, Adam has 1,300,000 more twitter followers than either Kris or Cook.  I am sure that AI looked at this stuff. Of course, he has nowhere near the level of interest that the two ladies have, but bang for the buck I think he is probably pretty good.

  • bridgette12

LOL! The most inept judge ever on Idol. A complete waste of money on Steven and JLo.

  • girlygirltoo

I totally disagree with you. David Cook and Kris Allen both have a lot of personality,  Both guys are intelligent, funny and charming. And Kris has judging experience already — he did the KidzBop contest and he also was one of the judges for a songwriting contest.

And we have no idea whether either of them were approached about being a judge. Just because there have been no reports mentioning them doesn’t mean they weren’t approached. I doubt that they were (not big enough “celebrities”), but it’s not out of the question.

  • girlygirltoo

Wouldn’t surprise me. The days of having judging panels made up of people who aren’t big celebrities seem to be long gone. Although Adam isn’t nearly as well known (outside of the Idol bubble) as most of the other rumored candidates.

  • mxaxrxyx

Adam Lambert’s publicist followed the American Idol twitter today, then unfollowed as soon as the twitterverse got wind of it.

I wonder why.  Probably just coincidence.

  • elliegrll

Things tend to look bigger than they actually are from inside the idol bubble too.

I think that Adam doesn’t get any credit inside of the idol bubble for being a writer, because some idol fans have heard his pre-idol songs. But, the level of quality of the songs doesn’t change the fact that he wrote them, so that does make him a writer.

  • KendraWills

Pepsi has already stated they have no problem with Nicki being on idol.

    http://adage.com/article/media/coke-pepsi-green-light-nicki-minaj-american-idol/236794/

  • KendraWills

And? I love Kris, but some of his pre idol songs were dogs, let’s be honest. Adam has writing credits on most of the songs on this album, and the words and phrasing are just so Adam.

ETA: I reread that paragraph and it sound harsh towards Kris. I think Kris is an excellent writer and I think he’s grown leaps and bounds after Idol. The fact that other people record his songs, is testament to that. I just don’t see the need to diminish either Adams or Kris’s talent based on pre idol songs. They’ve both stated so many times how much they learned from being on idol and working with producers.

Yep, I agree about the Idol bubble, but what’s funny is that peeps who post on idol boards are such a small percentage of idol viewers, what’s said doesn’t really matter in the outside world.

  • girlygirltoo

I was told by a big Adam fan on twitter that Idol is supposed to make an announcement about the judges on Tuesday. But I haven’t seen any confirmation of this anywhere else. Has anyone else here heard about this?

  • KendraWills

Please, if Kris and Cook had been approached, we would have heard something. Names were getting thrown out there like crazy. Cook had previously said he wouldnt want to judge and as much as I love him, Kris just doesn’t seem comfortable in those situations. He’s gotten so much better since AI, but there’s still a little awkwardness IMO.

  • http://twitter.com/Sassycatz Sassycatz

They probably didn’t approach Kris Allen or David Cook because neither one has any personality.

I wouldn’t say that the media who covers popular entertainment is the arbiter of who has personality. (Whatever that is.) They cover people for a lot of reasons — some positive, some negative.

I think this rumor is was birthed from the TMZ clip that’s posted on the previous page of this thread.  People have said that the commercial states that TMZ will reveal the news on Tuesday, but that’s not what I hear.  It states “on the next TMZ.”

  • bridgette12

It’s not like Idol has produced some great song writers. It has plenty of supposed singer/songwriter types, but hardly any that have songs that were actually hits. Creditable songwriters are not something Idol is known for no matter whether it’s Adam or one of the others.

  • LLA1535

I see what u r saying–but shouldn’t experience, talent and success factor into what someone earns. If u work at a job for x amount of years and are doing very well–than shouldn’t that person be paid more than a newbie –who’s staying power in the field is unproven

Don’t get me wrong. I think the salaries for most of the judges is obscene in the scheme of things. I mean, I don’t think a scientist who helped find a cure for some disease would earn $18 million. And I’m sure they put in a lot more hours than an Idol judge–LOL

They should just cap these salaries. And if the money is not worth the artist’s time–then find another artist. I think $5 million is more than enough. Plus, they get additional income by being able to promote their own music on the show. These artist can tour during off season of idol.

They should try promoting, right out of the gate, some of the songs actually written or co-written by their idol winners. By the time, they throw out a song written by the idol, they’ve already shot the promo budget and interest has moved on to the next big thing. It’s like a self-fulfilling prophecy.

  • mjsbigblog

    Reminder:

Continue fanwarring in this thread THAT’S NOT ABOUT ANY OF THE IDOLS and I will begin banning. Seriously.

  • Karen C

But with all these rumors that include random non-musical people (or talent) like Charlie Sheen and such, I got really annoyed.

That rumor started just because Nigel Lythgoe tweeted that Charlie Sheen would make a good judge as a joke, I don’t believe it was  meant to be serious.  I think some of the media picked up the story like Charlie Sheen was really being considered.

  • durbesque

How long do 4 judges talk about a 90-second song?  I never timed it.  The show has to be as long as possible for the commercials revenue.

As for giving more time to the contestants… How?  More sob story?  No thanks.  The songs can’t be longer.  Most singers on the contestant level can’t hold the viewers’ attention for more than once through…if that!

  • Karen C

I think the reason the 4 judges didn’t work in Season 8 and 9 was because the performance shows were shorter.  Now that they are 2 hours, it shouldn’t be as much as a problem.

  • durbesque

Yes.  I’m happy with 4 judges now. Looks like they will be interesting, diverse personalities.  As long as we don’t have to endure more of Randy’s worn-out drivel.  Anybody new would be preferable.

Anyone else noticed that no ‘real’ websites have reported that Urban is a judge? Because, it would seem, they do not get their news from the southern inbred newspaper.

  • roarpen

In many ways – most if not all stated here already – hiring Keith Urban is a great move. He will keep a big chunk of the current demo happy on many levels (yes he is a hottie plus the country folks will love it). Plus he is crossover country and appeals to people who don’t like country – like me. As far as telling it like it is, I don’t know because I have not watched him judge on other shows. He doesn’t seem like the kind of person that would be harsh. I hope he is helpful though.

  • roarpen

I must be having a brain freeze. How real is the Nicki is a judge deal? Is it confirmed? Or virtually confirmed?

  • bridgette12

That might because they are either waiting for confirmation, they haven’t heard about it yet or they just really don’t care for Keith Urban.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

Would Idol wait until after Labor Day?  I just hate this thing dragging out like this.  Keith is an excellent choice and Idol knows it.  I would approve Brad Paisley as well!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

You’re the type of fan I’m sure they were hoping would do just that with these choices of judges – entice people via some fresh buzz or spark to check Idol out… I hope the buzz from the rest of the panel, as well as a good crop of contestants,  is strong and draws some fresh new eyes and voters (and brings back some fans who drifted away)! Like another poster commented, this is the 1st time in a number of seasons I feel some excitement to watch Idol brewing.

  • underpressure90

Keith Urban is a great choice, he is country but his songs have rock and pop influence, so for those who are not into country, try to listen to one of his YT live performances, he is a beast on the guitar and he can swing those hips, I just wish he can have a different haircut.

  • whoisthatwoman

Why does my cynical self not believe the judges will have anything to do with anything as far as audience goes?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

Who knows, perhaps not – but there sure feels like there’s more ‘something’ in the air about this upcoming Idol season… anecdotally, I’ve heard interest in this season where there used to be NONE from friends and people at work and other places – Mariah’s signing sparked a LOT of interest, in men and women, the guys I know especially, lol… Nicki Minaj’s name thrown in the mix sparked interest… my nieces and nephews are into hip hop and rap and like her music, so they have heard the talk about her maybe joining Idol… people in my circle just seem to be TALKING about Idol again… hadn’t been this way for several seasons… Urban’s hiring may be sparking talk in other areas and in people who hadn’t been having Idol on the brain for a while… if they land another big or interesting name, more interest perhaps… just seems to me to be what TPTB want – people to get to talking about and getting excited again about this old warhorse called American Idol… I’m not expecting miracles, but there’s still life left in the old gal yet. I’m excited to see just how much.

  • Kitwana

If Idol really wanted to prove it is the #1 show in television and leave XFactor in the dust, it would have signed Beyonce over Mariah, Katy over Nicki, Brad over Keith and Justin Timberlake over Adam/Clay/Taylor Hicks. Idol can afford it and that panel would make the show untouchable.

  • fuzzywuzzy

” Plus he is crossover country and appeals to people who don’t like country – like me. ”

    Like me too!

  • Incipit

Posted this before – but it disappeared – trying again:

All those things considered, and adding in his experience as a coach on The Voice: Australia (where he was often caught singing along to performances, regardless of song genre), Keith Urban sure seems like a great fit for American Idol, don’t you think?

Yeah. Yeah, I do – I don’t care if he’s a country singer, which I don’t like country music, or whatever about crossover  - and I couldn’t name you one song of his. So what. That’s not what Idol is hiring him for, to sing. If they have country singers, I’m sure Keith is able to give them good advice – but he doesn’t appear to be limited to one genre. IMO, He may prove to be the most useful judge – which would be ironic – considering.

This is what convinced me that Idol may have finally hired a competent, articulate and musically knowledgable judge – his mention of the Rat Pack episode in Season 9  - which meant he appreciated and noticed the efforts of Harry Connick Jr. – the best mentor the show ever had – and also:

I guess what I love most about the show is watching the musical growth; to see them use the critique given and come back the next week and blow you away. That’s the magic of ‘Idol.’

If he’s got actual critiques to give – that would be different enough – bring it on!

I’d love to see the other judges try to match him for helpfulness and candor – instead of competing for catch phrases and mediocrity!!

    ETA – Season corrected – thanks, certain1

Well, those artists mentioned would have to have the slightest interest in doing Idol for that to happen. Reportedly, Simon Cowell tried to get Beyonce, and was willing to shell out the money for her, but she wasn’t interested. Katy was reportedly offered the job and turned it down flat. Timberlake…people can’t even get him to record another album, he’s totally distanced himself from anything music related as of late. Although I don’t care for Nicki, she will get more media attention because she is a loose cannon. After her Twitter tirade last weekend, I hope she’s not a PR nightmare for Idol waiting to happen. I love the addition of Keith, especially over Brad. Brad is way too “country”. People who don’t even like country like Keith Urban. And a lot of signs are pointing towards Adam as the 4th judge. One of his back-up singers tweeted tonight that they are off for the whole month of September. Adam cancelled interview in Australia that was scheduled for Monday. He’s coming home early and his schedule resumes the same time in October as Nicki’s. The TMZ report hinting about someone’s return to Idol. Won’t be Paula. Network execs made Simon fire her. The’re not going to turn around and hire her for Idol at the same network. Nick Jonas- I don’t hink Idol was ever interested in him. From the way his brothers are all over reality TV this fall, I think he and his management actively pursued the job, not the other way around. And now just a few days ago Nck is giving interviews about how the deal would have to be right and backpedalling his enthusiasm for the job. You don’t go from shameless campaigning for the job on Twitter and trying to rally your fans to trend you on Twitter to “Well, the deal would have to be right” and acting like you could take it or leave it. He knows he doesn’t have the job.

Whatever big “reveal” is going to happen on TMZ next week will be a big bag of nothing.

Honestly, if they had a piece of info–like who was going to be the 4th judge on Idol–do you believe that TMZ would tease it and then sit on it so somebody else could scoop them?

    I don’t think so.

  • http://twitter.com/BamadansPad Danny Latham

    Skylar just tweeted about this:

Skylar Laine ?@Skylar_LaineI’m so excited! FINALLY a country judge on @AmericanIdolyaaaayyyy! @KeithUrban congrats and I hope I get to meet you this coming season!

  • fantoo1

Adam would be the odd man out since he isn’t a superstar.

  • alterego

I did a search of Nick Jonas and there is a lot more current media regarding him on being an Idol judge than there is on Adam Lambert.  With Mariah Carey and Niki Minaj representing pop, there really isn’t a role for Lambert.  Keith Urban has a rock background, in addition to Country music.  Nick Jonas will fill the role of bringing in the younger audience.  He’s no longer just the little brother of the Jonas’.  He’s all grown up.

  • KendraWills

I do. I think TMZ and Idol have a “relationship” and they leak things to TMZ, probably with timelines attached. Doubt they’d want to ruin that relationship. Same with Shirley Halperin.

  • bridgette12

Adam might not get that job, but I guessing neither will little Nick Jonas. Those two women will use him as a doormat and he has nothing to offer the show. If they want someone to bring in the youth audience, they could do better than him.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

And he’s HOTTTTTTTTTT! (SHALLOW PLUG FOR THE HOTNESS)

    :)

  • Axxxel

Maybe both Adam and Nick will get the job… as guest judge…

  • http://twitter.com/LindsayKempFan Not fit to print

Doesn’t Idol normally announce in September even though, at a certain point, the whole of Hollywood knows who is picked. Also, why would Idol let TMZ announce it? The only reason TMZ would put out a teaser is if something is still not confirmed. Whoever leaks to them only knows so much at a time and they aren’t going to go out on a limb over something very iffy.

ALSO, their job is to get people tuning in on Monday. What a great teaser and the the news can always be that the judge “coming back” is Randy. They can certainly say that – their show is full of jokes.

The more I think about it, they may stop at 3: Mariah replaces JLo and Keith replaces Steven.

  • fuzzywuzzy

It could also be that the signing of the 4th judge is imminent, and TMZ’s “sources” (aka Nigel) have given them a head’s up that they will be given the scoop very soon.

    YAWN. 3X YAWN.

Might as well cancel the show.

  • mtlfan2

    What an excellent choice!!!
He’s a great guy and he’s very liked!
And it’s about time they have some country representation on the panel – for a little while at least

  • Axxxel

still thinking there might be rotating guest judges..

  • mjsbigblog

If TMZ had a major scoop, they would not be announcing it on their TV show. They would post it. And since ALL of these outlets are after the same thing, I don’t think there is any “waiting” involved, because this is the sort of info that leaks from several sources.

  • KendraWills

Eh, I don’t agree. TMZ and Idol have been in bed with each other since Season 10. They seem to have become the mouthpiece for Idol, doubt they would jeopardize that relationship. Also, who says they won’t post something Monday and put it on their tv show. Thats what usually happens.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1040683755 Steve Gray

so, has any real media run with the urban as judge story? or just blogs and the ‘inbred news’?

  • http://twitter.com/LindsayKempFan Not fit to print

Baloney. Idol and every other entertainment corporation in LA uses TMZ when it suits them and TMZ thrives on it. If Idol and TMZ were joined at the hip, then the Kanye story would never have seen the light of day.

There is a leaker at Idol and TMZ gets whatever that person knows but that person is not fully in the picture or TMZ would be 100%.

If Idol wants it out there, they can get it out there and they will use whoever it suits them to use.

I still say the judge “coming back” is Randy.

Plus, if it’s a major scoop, Idol will have it’s own well-timed press conference.

  • http://twitter.com/LindsayKempFan Not fit to print

LOL. Which show? TMZ or Idol?

  • Mateja Praznik

     Idol.

  • http://twitter.com/LindsayKempFan Not fit to print

I wish people would stop the sloppy thinking about the tween vote – the tween vote is Justin Bieber and One Direction. Nick’s fan’s are the same age as him and his brothers: 20-something. NICKI MINAJ has that market and she is a rapper so guess what? That market is covered.

Adam and Nick only make sense if it’s a 4 judge panel. If Nicki’s on it, Adam makes a bit more sense. Mariah and Nicki are pretty in-your-face dominant women and Keith is laid back and soft-spoken. In that scenario, Keith needs a decent wingman. Adam fits the bill much better than the equally reserved, soft-spoken Nick Jonas.

The panel could stay at three with Randy as the 3rd judge. And let’s face it, no one at Idol ever said he was leaving. In that scenario, Nick and Adam aren’t needed.

  • http://twitter.com/LindsayKempFan Not fit to print

    I hope so.

  • http://twitter.com/LindsayKempFan Not fit to print

This person is a very big Adam fan. What more do you need to know before discounting it as wishful thinking? Trust me, I know you who you are talking about and they are counting their chickens before they are hatched. Before they are even laid, for goodness sakes.

There is no confirmation of a Tuesday announcement anywhere because no press conference or announcement has been scheduled. Idol usually waits until after Labour Day and there is no reason for them to do anything different this year, particularly if the Minaj contract hasn’t been inked yet.

  • judes

Well I’ll still believe this when I actually hear it from Keith’s own lips. He would be great. I watched The voice Australia & he was a wonderful mentor to his group & a good judge. Maybe ha can change the Idol atmosphere of not getting too close to the idols.I think after mentoring he would get frustrated not being able to be within arms length of them.

  • lilly924

Selection of Idol judges is not earth shattering gossip though, not to the general public. And if they were given the exclusive information, they would hold it for a few days. They do that stuff all the time in order to keep their sources for future scoops for really big stories. Nicki Minaj and Mariah were the big names for the panel and that information is already out there. If the addition to the panel is Adam, that’s, for the most part, pretty mid-level news. It is only big news for Adam and Idol fans at this point.

  • Happyhexer

Keith Urban has had voice problems, yes, but there has been NO GAP in hearing his music on country radio.  At least not that I can tell.  And at least not so far . . .

  • Happyhexer

Whoops, I see that Windmills already corrected this, with more information than I can provide.  I just know that I listen to country music and haven’t noticed an absence by Keith at all.  That said, being on Idol won’t hurt Keith’s career, and it may introduce him to a different (non-country) audience.
