Hey! There’s nothing I love MORE than having favorite songs butchered. Particularly beloved New Wave classics from the 80′s! No they di’int! (OMG they did) and NO I don’t!

Katharine McPhee sings lead on a cover of the classic Waitresses’ tune “I Know What Boys Like”, and the song is beyond craptastic. Snark? Satire? Completely absent from this new version. Kinda pointless if you ask me. Oh yeah, I guess the point is to put together a lame song to run over the credits of Kat’s upcoming movie “The House Bunny”. Oh. Goody.

Plus, the production sucks, the rapping is crappy, and I hate the gratuitous runs. Not loving, it. Sorry!

Both versions are posted After the JUMP… What do you think?

Kat’s “version”:

The Waitresses original version…ahhhh…:

BONUS! The Waitresses’ perenial Christmas Classic, “Christmas Wrapping”

  • Brentwood

It’s just a cute song that’s supposed to run over the closing credits of her movie. Her “sorority sisters” and their “Housebunny”, Anna Faris , are the back-up singers. The rap section is done by Emma Stone. It’s fine, for what it is—–it’s not supposed to be added to radio, it’s not supposed to be on her sophomore album, it’s just a remake done for that specific purpose.
Oh, and the name of the movie is “The House Bunny”, not “Bunny Ranch”, lol.
So how many tickets can I put you down for, mj?

  • Nanny Mcphee

It’s supposed to be a goofy fun song, for a goofy fun movie. I don’t think it’s supposed to be serious, but whatever. I love it, I love Kat, and I can’t wait for this movie. Her voice sounds lovely here, and a friend of the lead singer of the now passed Waitresses singer, said she loved it and Patty would love how sultry Katharine sounds singing it. I think some people are taking this a tad bit too seriously. All in good fun people. :happy_tb:

    Go Kat Go!!!

    0. It looks pretty stupid.

    Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just a cute song

The original song wasn’t “cute”. It was tongue in cheek, sly and funny. Kind of brilliant, imo. The lyrics are clever and Patty Donahue’s delivery was pitch perfect.

I hate it when great classic songs are dumbed down and turned into junk.

  • http://absinthedreamers.blogspot.com/ Starrlight

I think what MJ is peeved about (and rightfully so in my opinion) is that the song was not meant to be fun and goofy. It was bitchy and snarky. It owned. This version sucks imho.

    Thank you! Exactly.

  • flynnsgirl

MJ, Could you tell us what you really feel! LOL
I loved the original version, this one, not so much!
The best part of most of the Season 5 Tour, is that Kat wasn’t there, so I don’t want to see her anywhere else!

  • Nanny Mcphee

Well blame the movie people then, because in an interview on MTV with Katharine, she said she sang this song because it was in the script and it’s what the director told her to do.

If it was anybody but Kat it would be a whole different story. So sad. :sad_tb:

  • itsalleternal

No offense to Kat fans, but in my opinion, it is the worst song ever done by an Idol contestant (apart from William Hung and the other bad auditioners). I listened to it for 30 seconds last night on the iTunes clip and it made my ears bleed. Kat should not have signed on for that movie if she was forced to do that horrendous song…

  • poporange

Ok I see your point …I also like the original version better . Ihave nothing against Kat and hope she does well in her carreer. I much prefer what they did in the end credt its with “Something about Mary ”
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPnJXNpCxs0

or speaking of teen flicks how about Health Ledger singing in “10 things I Hate about You”
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6XGUhzfutc
Talk about 180 degree difference from this to the Joker.

    Ehhhhhh….

  • jersey

MJ, for some reason, I’m not seeing the video links to anything except “Christmas Wrapping”.

  • champ

I think Kat is so good looking it just doesn’t even matter.

  • shelter

Never thought Kat could pull it off, and it’s even worst than I imagined.
    I’m not liken’ it.

  • Duke

i don’t think it’s that bad- Kat’s voice is remarkable IMO.

granted, i won’t be putting the song on my iPod, but its not THAT BAD.

so i’m guessing if this movie does well at the box office and if kat gets some attention from it, then that will officially make her number 3 most successful from S5? (im thinking Chris, obviously, then elliot, then Kat?)

ok- i just got done listening to the whole song, the ending (especially that girl rapping) was bad. so yeah, its not that good. haha you were right. but i still think Kat sang great.

anyways, im glad Kat is getting her moment in the spotlight- i hope she continues to sing- just not songs like this.

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

Wow…..that is bad. I hate having classics ruined when they’re covered for whatever reason. I react the same way when they use favorite classics as background to commercials. Makes the stomach turn.

  • calimari

Chris is by far the runaway lead for season 5, but I wouldn’t put Elliott & Kat at #2 and 3. Taylor still sold more than both, and he’s doing Broadway and has another CD coming out. And he toured way more than either of them. And Pickler somehow managed to do suprisingly well too. Let’s just say they are ALL in a much better place than they were pre-idol. I like that…

I can’t find the link to hear the song either…

  • Layla

    Where’s the link?

  • gingerly

I got through about 15 seconds of it yesterday before I got real twitchy. I had to go listen to the original a couple times to cleanse myself. I don’t mind songs being covered if there is a modicum of integrity in how it’s done.

  • goldenlpb

As far as a classic or not, I guess it depends on where your sense of humor lies. I always saw that song as something that Saturday Night Live could use as material for their skits.
I think if you don’t like someone you are going to find somthing wrong with everything that they do regardless of what it is…I think that is called human nature. I hope Katharine does well in her movie although I can’t imagine those type of movies doing much but going straight to video after a few weeks!

  • Barbariba

I couldn’t find a link. Can someone direct me?

  • http://youtube.com/user/ConcertCameraCat Sparkles

Wow, that is beyond awful. I wouldn’t even recognize the song if I didn’t see the title. Patty Donahue must be rolling over in her grave.
Here’s the link, by the way.

  • Toonces74

I didn’t like the song and I have never heard the original. I thought Somewhere Over the Rainbow was great and I think that she should have gone for an audience more like – Celine Dion or some big vocalist kind of album, when I heard some of her stuff I thought she definitely took the wrong direction.

Sorry that your song got ruined, MJ. At least it’s just at the end credits of the movie. No one will hear it. Just like “Hit Me Up” from Happy Feet :-)

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Sorry…I just fixed the links. Damn wordpress messes up the links when I try to edit sometimes…

  • CRB

Actually, according to a person at IMDB who saw a sneak peak of the movie this song also is playing in the background on the big makeover scene too, where some Anna Faris coaching transforms the homely sorority girls into virtual boy magnets.

I guess the rapping and pseudo dance beats are supposed to put the edginess back into the song that actually singing the lyrics kind of takes away. BACK, BACK, BACK IT UP! :nono_tb:

If absolutely tuneless dross like I Kissed A Girl can bestride the Hot 100 of our putatively great nation for better than a month then this cover of I Know What Boys Like is certainly adequate for a Happy Madison (A. Sandler) produced summer comedy’s soundtrack.

  • shelter

“I react the same way when they use favorite
    classics as background to commercials.”

I got a kick out the cruiseline using The Stooges “Lust For Life” for their commercial, until the 50th time I heard it.

I think measuring success is tricky. Would you go by notariaty, cd sales, biggest following or tour profits?
I have no clue who from S5 has the most fans. Daughtry seems yards ahead of everyone, and Elliot seems to have made smart moves. I think to the general public Taylor, Kellie & Bucky are more famous than Kat. But what do I know. hehe

  • Toonces74

It’s like a funny optical illusion that in this photo, Kat looks to be 9 months pregnant. (at least, to me)

  • weelassie

    toonces
she plays a pregnant girl in the film. your eyes are A-O-K. :)

  • weelassie

could only listen for a smidge cuz it was that horrible.

  • shelter

Even though it’s Happy Madison produced, I wonder if Sandler had anything to do with it.
Great music is one thing I thought was always guaranteed with an Adam Sandler (or Cameron Crowe) movie.

  • dancingqueen

I kept fast forwarding to find a good part – never did. If I heard this without knowing it was Kat, I still wouldn’t like it. And, after seeing previews of the movie, I won’t be attending that, either (nothing to do with Kat, she was barely in the preview).

  • Zeppelin

    Oh my O__O

    No Kat….just no…

  • Layla

    Thanks for the link.

That song is all kinds of bad. Nope…still don’t like her.

  • http://absinthedreamers.blogspot.com/ Starrlight

You are most welcome, MJ. And I have nothing at all against Kat. I am not part of a large anti-Kat conspiracy, I just don’t like have the entire intent of a song changed.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Wow. A couple of people who’ve been posting here for awhile STILL refuse to follow the guidelines!

    http://mjsbigblog.com/?page_id=1172

    You know what that means.

    Buh bye!

  • http://inkdbylilyanna.com carolina

Ouch! and boring too. Pretty typical for Kat though unless she’s singing Broadway show tunes.

Pretty only gets you an extra minute in Hollywood.

  • sciencefan

All I had was a still picture, no video.

The song was okay, but I only listened to about a minute of it since I really don’t like that kind of music anymore.

  • colette

    May I add: Blech.

And may I ask: is anyone else utterly sick of these repetitive, tuneless electro-dance grooves and wannabe rap moments? It’s cheese-rock, and musically stupid.

And Katherine, ever hear of satire? what about irony? I’m with MJ all the way on this one…

  • sue

That was a terrible song for Kat but I guess it is part of the role. I could only bare 40 seconds of it. The movie is going to bomb.

Kevin Covais also has a movie coming out call “College” with Drake Bell, here is the “red band” trailer of the film
http://www.aceshowbiz.com/news/view/00017256.html. It is the raunchier version of the trailer, the “R” rated version. It looks gross but funny. I will probably watch it since I am a fan, I run a fansite for him, lol. Oh Kevin is also in another movie with Lindsay Lohan called “Labor Pains”.

Season 5 has definitely produced a successful group of idols. I know Daughtry, Elliot, Kelly, Bucky, and Taylor have all got a piece of the pie. Kat, Kevin, and maybe Ace and some others will have some success from it. It is certainly more than any of the other seasons.

But I agree with MJ, Kat’s version of that song is just stupid. I don’t know how the movie is going to be, I haven’t seen any trailers for it, well I really haven’t been searching, lol.

  • SpenserJ

Craptastic for sure. Which I’m sure means it will be a huge radio hit LOL.

Typically I find Anna Faris to be hysterical, but this movie looks pretty lame.

  • sue

http://www.aceshowbiz.com/news/view/00017256.html “College” trailer link again, I think this one works. Sorry about double posting.

I was going to mention Kevin’s movie. I think both Kat’s and Kevin’s movies come out either the same weekend or within a week of each other.

Honestly, I don’t think either movie is going to do that well at the box office. However, I have a feeling “College” will fare better than “The House Bunny.”

  • http://blog.syracuse.com/idolthoughts/ foxydonna

I liked the Japanese airline commercial better, so what does that say? Like her or not, Kat’s determined to make it somewhere, somehow! If not music, movies; if not movies, commercials. Even did a cameo on ‘Ugly Betty.’ Leave no stone unturned, Kat.

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a horrible, horrible cover. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not great but I wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t put the blame on Katharineà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s shoulders. I think its in line with the movie and as a song I would rank it as much of a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“classicà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ at that other 80à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s song à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Put another Dime in the Jukebox.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Its not like she did the ukulele version of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Silver Springsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ or something. I think the movie looks cute in the Legally Blonde girl empowerment movies that I generally like but donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t read anything into more then a good time at the show that doesn’t involve Superheroes or Will Ferrall. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not like this is aiming to be à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Million Dollar Babyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ or à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Hours.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ I though love Katharine and would rank her along with Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, and Carly Smithson as my favorite Idols. I’m also glad that she is working a lot and hope this leads to bigger roles.

“I Love Rock And Roll” by Joan Jett is an 80′s classic.

  • StevenD

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Put another Dime in the Juke Boxà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is a different song. It went something like à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Put another Dime in the Juke Box, I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t want to hear that song no more, So Put another Dime in the Juke Box etc. and had a chorus of something like à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Little Things Remind me of You Cheap Cologne and that Damn Song Too.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ I would rate it as a cheese classic along with à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I Know What Boys Like.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

  • http://absinthedreamers.blogspot.com/ Starrlight

Don’t put another Dime is on the Valley Girl Soundtrack and it’s by The Flirts. Anything on that soundtrack ranks as 80′s classic =)

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Put another Dime in the Juke Boxà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is a different song.

I forgot about that song. Sorry, my dumb. I had a friend who always called “I Love R&R” “Put Another Dime In The Jukebox” so that’s what I thought of right away. Both songs are definately classics. This song by Kat, not so much.

  • ShabbyChic

It sounds like something I hear during these types of movies all the time.
Disney does this all the time too, they remake a classic disney song and turn it into a pop song with a current pop star singing it, and then play it during the end credits of a new movie.
