Jennifer Lopez American Idol Salary Top 17 Million (Report)

The UK Daily News is reporting that Jennifer Lopez is getting a pay raise to re-join the American Idol judges’ panel:

In mid-August there were rumours that Jennifer, the mother of five-year-old twins Max and Emme, was getting a $15m salary for her third season of Idol, but the figure is actually higher.

The $17.5m salary is a big leap from the $12m paycheck J-Lo was handed for her first season of Idol in 2011. For her second season she was given a $3m raise to $15m.

Actually, there have been conflicting reports about Jlo’s salary. I’ve heard she was paid as much as 18 million for her second season. But still, she’s getting paid a substantial salary, from a show that’s been losing ad revenue in the past couple of years.

When the cast and crew are relegated to paying for their own snacks because of budget restrictions, it’s kind of annoying to read about Jlo’s all-star salary. One that’s not earned, if you ask me. She’d better step it up and offer the hopefuls some constructive criticism this year. Behave like you’re rubbing a few brain cells together when you show up for work, m’kay?

  • TLB

I don’t really get why they’re bringing her back. She was nice and her own career (with endorsements) was significantly boosted but she didn’t bring much to the show. Hiring her seems sort of like a step backwards.

  • Eric Mitchell

They just keep making the same stupid mistakes

  • Mateja Praznik

Wait, J.LO gets 17.5 million and they offered only 12 million to Dr. Luke?

  • ellen8

So sad for me that after watching every show every season, never missing one, I will not be watching this season. American Idol has become all about the judges, they have proven that they don’t care about the contestants. I will not slime my screen with the likes of JLo. She is just an older Miley imho and is terribly overrated. Over 17 million – come on, this is a joke !!

  • ajr86

Why would idol pay 17 million bucks to turn off half of their viewing audience , who can’t stand Jlo as a judge?

  • Amy Beth

Nice work if you can get it.

  • usedtobelucy

    Oh for crap’s sake.

  • *Crazy*Muther*4U*

Disgusting $17.5 million payout to a tired retread.
She brings nothing to the show.

  • taptap

My guess would be because (well) more than half of the viewing audience wouldn’t view it negatively. Certainly superfans in the bubble do – can’t stand her myself – but I don’t think that’s true of the casual fans. My guess is that superfans are far less than 50% of the total AI viewing audience, and maybe only as much as 5%.

  • bridgette12

They are paying her megabucks to do what. Between her goosies and self promoting her new album with those abysmal lip sync performances on the Idol stage, what other life changes experiences will she provide for the audience. It’s past pathetic that Idol is paying her all this money to give critique to singers, when she can’t even sing live herself.

  • Alexandre Oliveira

    I’d rather have 17 Nickis

  • Landon Cox

I would do it for $1 million, jeez Fox

  • lkingcorn

That does it I am not watching this shoe out if protest for this slam in the face of good old common sense. Are you Fox people crazy??? Sorry but this makes me feel sick.

  • Liteasy

Doesn’t FOX realize viewers don’t watch it for the judges. I think they’d get just as many viewers if there weren’t any judges at all.

  • Miss Blue

    Nauseating. Simply nauseating.

  • Bugme Nomor

I honestly don’t see why any judge should make more than Keith Urban did last season.

  • fuzzywuzzy

It’s very difficult not to see this move as completely idiotic.

  • b_james

Remember when Paula left because she couldn’t get $5million? Lolz.

  • Bugme Nomor

It’s like she keeps hitting the lottery. I don’t think having a “big name” helps that much with viewership. The only reason I can see for it is that it might help keep sponsors from jumping ship.

  • Stooch

Yeah there’s no point investing in the show itself from production to sound and all things that will enhance the experience of the viewer. Better off spending it on a person who doesn’t have an original or intelligent thought of her own. Good Job Idol, but remember at the end of the day “You reap what you sow”

  • Allison

    biggest waste of money ever

  • fuzzywuzzy

The only reason JLo was hired again is because of Simon Fuller.

  • overthetop1

It’s like no one went to business school.

  • thedeviledadvocate

AI earns a ton of money from its advertisers. They obviously will not pay as much as they did in the heyday years of idol, but they will still pay a high dollar amount. JLo is a draw to those advertisers as much as she is a draw to many of her fans that have a completely different opinion of her performance as a judge on AI than many of the posters here.

I don’t care who the judges on AI are this year, as long as they get 10 to 12 talented contestants. The judges have always simply been a mouthpiece for the producers (with Simon being a sometimes exception). If the talent they choose is only as good as the talent last year, then, like last year, my interest in the season will fade quickly.

If they have multiple unearned standing O’s, obvious false OTT praise, and too much bus driving, like the have the past 3 seasons, then my interest in the season will fade quickly.

JLo as a judge is not the problem that AI needs to fix. She will do as well as any judge on the show can do when the producers are pulling strings. There are a half a dozen other things that AI’s new producers could fix, that would make everyone forget all about JLo’s goosies.

  • Mel432

‘JLo as a judge is not the problem that AI needs to fix. She will do as well as any judge on the show can do when the producers are pulling strings. There are a half a dozen other things that AI’s new producers could fix, that would make everyone forget all about JLo’s goosies.”

Then why hire HER, or pay HER that much? If there was a lot of back and forth on salary, and they settled on 17.5M, she must have asked for more. Can you imagine how many really good performers work really hard at even making $1M a year?

  • girlygirl

This is such a joke. The ratings are in the toilet, there’s no buzz about the show, they bring back a judge who did (IMO) a bad job in the first place and then they give her a raise???? I don’t care if Fox and/or the production company can afford it, it’s still bad business. #smh

  • abbysee

“JLo as a judge is not the problem that AI needs to fix. She will do as well as any judge on the show can do when the producers are pulling strings. There are a half a dozen other things that AI’s new producers could fix, that would make everyone forget all about JLo’s goosies.”

Totally agree, I’m not going to kvetch about any of the judging choices as by now the idol faithful know that they are truly scripted talking heads paid to push the producers agenda. They are fixes beyond the judges that might keep idol on life support for another season or two. If they find another judge that works better than Steven Tyler did, I’m not going to sweat the panel. After last year’s panel, how can it be worse?

  • CanadianLady

That’s ridiculous. Invest in the contestants and help them instead of JLo.

  • Sandy

Did anyone hear how much Keith is paid this season?

    JLo ain’t worth 17 million.

  • lkingcorn

Mj has great recaps each week and they are entertaining. I stopped watching Idol way back when but have kept up with the recaps. They also are good for laughs as no punches are held. Well Selzek does pick some female favorite each year, but he and Melinda are way better than the actual judges.

  • Jacko86

Like it or not: the American public loves to see Jennifer Lopez on TV! :)

    Get that money, J-Lo!

  • waynestrong

    waste of money

  • Sandy

Not this here American public individual.

  • Sandy

After reading that, it turns me off from the show even more.

Oh joy, more of JLo’s dreadful wannabe a hit music performances, complete with Boy-toy. No thanks.

  • iani

This salary-amount just ruins my vacation!(J/K) Sad that the new producers are also in the financial splurge mood for judges, hopefully there is something left to support the show itself.

  • fuzzywuzzy

No. Simon Fuller loves to see Jennifer Lopez on Idol. lol

  • Stooch

Actually he likes his 15% lol

  • fuzzywuzzy

Oh right. I forgot that there’s a rumor that JLo managed to get her BF an Idol job too. lol

  • fuzzywuzzy

Plus, Fuller probably gets a cut of JLo’s other business endeavors (clothing line, fragrance, television shows, etc.). I’m expecting JLo to promote all of her non-music endeavors on Idol as well.

  • milwlovesadam

    OKay so , here I go :

    “You give me goosies”
    “You look so pretty”
    “I love your shoes”
    “I don’t know that song”
“That song wasn’t what I listened to when I was younger”
“I can’t remember what you sang last week”

Puts hand out, and has 17.5 MILLION dollars handed back.

    Where do I sign up????

    I am appalled.

  • HermeticallySealed

Oh, is that why Idol continued it’s downward slide while she was a judge?

  • Vetle Hovland

Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. She’s not even doing her job when it comes to the live shows.

  • Lucy

The TV ratings for Idol during the years she was a judge don’t bear this out. Audience size took a big drop in her second year, Season 11. She and Steven wore out their welcome pretty fast.

  • Sharon S.

I’d love to know what kind of ratings that Fox and the Idol producers are expecting from bringing JLo back. Are they just hoping to reduce the rate of decline? Hoping the ratings stay steady from last season? Or do they believe JLo will actually win back viewers who left during Season 12 and the ratings will go up?

Whatever it is they’re looking for, girlfriend had better bring it for the ridiculous amount of money they’re paying her. I’d say she’ll be out on her shapely butt if the ratings don’t measure up to their expectations, but I’m beginning to think she has photos of Kevin Reilly in a highly compromising position tucked away somewhere.

  • Lori

She is so not worth the money. Just think… they could have used even a fraction of that money on, say, their AMERICAN IDOL WINNER!! Ugh.

  • ladymctech

So, with the ratings down drastically and I suppose the ad revenue as well, how does AI justify this kind of money for one judge?

  • *PrettyMeBadd*

I can see if J.Lo returned for a discounted amounted. A price cut. But to pay her more like she was the last judge on earth. What a desperate move. Can’t $17.5 million (Mariah was $18 mill) get a fresh new younger judge… like a Alisha Keys?

  • Beaugard Stevens

If the show is that stupid, it’s hard to feel sorry for them.

  • lkingcorn

And now Levine is jumping ship. So whose mentoring and producing albums? Jackson? Whose idea of all these marvelous changes do we credit.

  • Five Skies

Why do the judges on The Voice get significantly lower pay than the Fox judges?

I mean, they are mostly significantly more relevant and famous. And the ratings are higher than XF and Idol.

  • Stooch

They can pay these Bozo’s 10′s of millions of dollars, but can’t give the Top 5 their Compilation CD………well done Idol

  • MyDailyComment

They should offer a 17 million dollar prize to the winner instead!!

  • LA944

It really is sick to pay anybody that kind of money for that job. I don’t care if the person is the best judge ever or just like JLO–lol Pay 1-6 mill (depending on years there or star power) and call it a day. There are plenty of better choices who would work for so much less. Take the savings and give some to sponsor music education for poor students. Take some and give it to cancer research. Pay the contestants something decent for the tour.. Whatever.

I really think more people tuned in to see Steven Tyler than JLO anyway. All she would have to do is “sing” for some more evil dictators to make up the difference.

I have to hand it to her though. For not having very much talent–JLO sure knows how to make a buck. Very savvy lady

  • Mel432

At least Mariah was known for her incredible vocals, unlike JLo. I have never, ever heard anyone write about what a good singer JLo is/was.

  • taptap

She probably gets this much for a feature film, and she’s probably dedicating about as much of her time for the Idol judging gig as it would take to shoot the feature film. It’s better for her because it comes with incremental exposure over a longer period of time, regardless of the contestant outcome.

  • Q_3

Not surprising but truly brain dead. They should have taken the $17.5 million or whatever and used it for prizes and mentors/support for the contestants. It is who the audience wants to see.

  • Landon Cox

    Goosies!

  • Larc

None of the American public I know does. I could tell you some of the things my friends have said about her, but MJ would ban me if I used that kind of language here. ;)

  • LA944

I don’t think so. She’s not big box office. Check out the Forbes list top 10 paid actresses. Some of them don’t even get $17 mil http://www.forbes.com/sites/dorothypomerantz/2013/07/29/angelina-jolie-tops-our-list-of-hollywoods-highest-paid-actresses/

  • Forever21

If Canadian Idol can find someone like Sass Jordan, why can’t AI?

  • Mel432

I thought her recent movies have flopped too, so not likely they would pay her what she wanted. #10 (Natalie Portman) makes about $11M, and she is a sought after actress.

  • Vetle Hovland

    Aaaaand I will have nightmares tonight. ;___;

  • No Thanks

Or used the money to pay for more song clearances.

  • Ari

Its hard to imagine that generating new viewers…when they had 2 years to check her out if they wanted to. Im still seeing nothing new or exciting about Idol

  • Ari

Maybe she can teach the contestants how to lip synch and they can save money by cutting the band

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ ZsusK

    …………………. *stunned silence*

  • Erlie

Only 17.5 million? Fox should give her more money like 20 mil. because she is beautiful and walk like a queen. I can’t wait to watch AI.

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ ZsusK

taptap. I assume you’re being sarcastic? Because if not, HELLO!!!

  • LibertarianUSA

$17 million dollars to judge a Singing competition?

    *facepalm*

  • ellen8

Or she can teach contestants how to show flesh and bump and grind on family hour national tv.

  • ellen8

Thank you – I can relate – I feel insulted. Just sickened. And I feel sorry for next season’s contestants.

  • ellen8

    Iovine

  • ellen8

excuse me but I consider myself part of the American public .

  • Broddybounce

    Dumb decision.

  • Kariann Hart

JLo should also treat the cast and crew to lunch each day. This woman does not need nor deserve that kind of salary. Then we hear the Idols took a pay cut for each show appearance on the tour. Something just isn’t right here.

  • Kariann Hart

Alisha was my original choice for the female judge. That is an outrageous fee.

  • Kariann Hart

Between her goosies and self promoting her new album with those abysmal lip sync performances on the Idol stage…
For that kind of money, JLo better sing live. She needs to be an example to the contestants. In the past, there have been many contestants who sang much better. Then again, they didn’t sing dressed half-naked.

  • Bluebeat

Are you serious? She’s not even the charts anymore!

  • Bluebeat

I’m not interested in the judging panel anymore. I’m more interested in how they’re gonna change the format..

  • Bluebeat

Agreed, J.Lo just wants to show-off how ‘relevant’ she still with a paycheck.

  • Bluebeat

Hey I like Alicia Keys! I actually wanted her on Idol too :-)

  • Bluebeat

Or revamping the entire show with a different format.

  • BonnieDee

J-Lo was very popular when she was on Idol before, and she will be again. And those of us who left because of Nicki will come back for Harry, Keith, and J-Lo

  • BonnieDee

No freaking way. Nicki brought Idol down. J-Lo, Keith, and Harry will have better ratings this year.

  • Mateja Praznik

I doubt there will be any big changes. The format is old, it was sold all around the world in in most countries it has been replaced by X Factor and The Voice. Idol franchise only exists in a handful of countries now, It’s on it’s way out.

  • hcpoirot

It prove to you that the FOX honchos and new Idol producer still (naively and stupidly) believe that the famous judges that make this show Big.

The 17 million that they use to pay JLo will be better use for paying much better and newer songs to sing in the live rounds. Instead of the tired of Whitney Houston songs, Beatles songs, the 50-80s songs. And other songs that had been sung so many times.

It really didnot bode well that the producer did not do anything major to change this show to be better. Hiring back J-LO is the prove.

  • hcpoirot

And no . J-Lo will not bringing new viewers. The only reason why season 10 and 11 had great ratings because of the depth of the contestants. Season 10 had very interesting singers. Though season 11 quality suffer a little than season 10, it sure was better than season 12.

If they keep choosing a one sided contestants like season 12, season 13 rating will be worse than season 12.

  • hcpoirot

No. Maybe once upon a time in her top career, J-Lo can ask around 15 million dollar a movie. But now? She had not make any 100 million dollar movie in ages. They probably pay her between 5-8 million dollar a movie.

Only Julia Roberts , Sandra Bullock or Angelina Jolie can asked for a salary of 17 million or above for one movie. And all of J-Lo movies box office probably cannot make half as much as one of the stars above.

  • hcpoirot

I am sad that I agree with MJ here. The format is not fresh anymore and for 12 years had not had any big changes. Just more money for judges.

  • gem2477

That’s what burns me — if they reduced JLo’s salary by one tenth of 1% they would be able to pay for meals for the entire crew.

  • HighOnElliott

And yet they couldn’t give Pauler a wimpy raise? She was way more entertaining……

  • patriciajames

The big thing going for JLo is that the 2 years she was a judge, she helped find 2 big potential Idol winning stars: Scotty McCeary and Philip Phillips “on her watch”.

  • bridgette12

She can’t sing, she never could. Dancing around half naked, lip syncing is the extent of her talent.

  • bridgette12

She don’t care about them unless they are fetching something for her.

  • Joseph Padilla

As much as she has that, her unjustified pettiness towards the likes of Haley Reinhart and Hollie Cavanagh really had me losing it with her. Not forgivable in my eyes, especially with offering no honest and succint critiques.

  • Karen C

As I recall, they weren’t her favorites, and I don’t believe she ever said they would win. I specifically remember her saying that Joshua should win. It was Randy that said Phillip was so good, Jimmy Iovine and some of the other mentors did too.
