Idols In Concert – Stats – 07/31/14

Another week, another set of concert reports, another death watch on the Idol Live Counter Tour. Let’s start with the good news. AGT’s Lindsey Stirling is continuing to perform before sell-out crowds – this week in Florida. Adam continues to perform with Queen on their successful tour – this time in Uncasville (our old friend from Idol Tours of yore). So You Think You Can Dance had six performance in Antwerp to pretty good crowds. Idol? It didn’t do to badly in Birmingham, but there was no partying in Ft. Lauderdale. Yes, 964 is a new record and not a good one. First time below a 0. Sigh.

Christina Grimmie released her first single “Must Be Love” to iTunes today. At last look, it was at #71 on the overall chart.

  • Larc

Only 1,960 people for the Idol tour concert in Birmingham isn’t great. That was the “hometown” concert for 2 of them, Jessica and CJ. It would have been for Dexter as well if he hadn’t dropped out. And the less said about Ft. Lauderdale, the better.

  • girlygirl

I don’t think they sold out Sam’s “Hometown” stops, either.

  • holly c

At the end of the tour, I’d be interested in the stats for the hometown concerts of all the idols verses the average of the entire tour. Boy, just over a third of the seats sold in Fort Lauderdale. That is depressing. I don’t see how S14 will even go on tour unless the bleed in viewership reverses… And in a big way.

  • girlygirl

It’s at #63 now. That’s good, but doesn’t quite live up to the claims of her having this huge fanbase. Will be interesting to see how much higher it can climb before it starts to slide back (as it will inevitably do since I don’t think there’s been radio play for it yet).

  • holly c

Some sources were saying beforehand that the Sarasota concert (the closest show to Sam’s hometown) was sold out, but seats were still available days before the concert, so I don’t know.

Damn that FL date is pathetic

Anyone know how they did in Windsor Ontario? That would be the hometown for Jena and Malaya. A half hour from both of their Detroit suburbs. The next closest would be Mt. Pleasant MI, but that is at least an hour and a half.

  • Kirsten

Here are some stats for previous tours to those areas
    S2: Birmingham -12,384 – 100% $426, 917
    S4: Birmingham – 11,004 – 100% $493,458
    S5: Birmingham – 13,041 – 98% $694,363
    S6: Birmingham – 3,775 – 39% $243,398

  • Mel432

I heard that they added bad seats/tickets at the last minute to the Conn QAL concerts which didn’t sell. Thus the 99% sales. Interesting both concerts sold the same amount of tickets both nights.

  • sdmama

Question; when I see a concert that was sold 99% and there sold 14,000 tickets, I have to ask they could not sell the last 100 seats, why? It seems unlikely that they predicted the demand that precisely.

Were these extremely expensive tickets, they had held same day tickets that they could not sell, last minute “return/cancel”, single seats nobody wants to buy or what?

Where these tickets really available to purchase for general public from Ticketmaster before the concert? I am wondering if it is worth looking for tickets just before a ‘sold out’ concert.

  • sdmama

Ah, you just answered my question! Thanks.

  • Amy Beth

The Birmingham AL concert was the home concert for 3 of the final 10 (2/9 if we don’t count Dexter). Theoretically, it should have been one of the best selling shows on the tour.

  • girlygirl

I don’t know if Danny’s song will get there, but how many Idols have hit #1 on the Christian mediabase charts? I’m guessing Mandisa might have. Anyone else?

  • Amy Beth

That was a problem when she previously released original music. However, this time she has label support, so we will see.

Alex & Sierra have also fallen back on iTunes, despite hitting #1 twice with their XFactor covers.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

The only even semi-justifiable excuse for Fort Lauderdale is that Idol’s entire target audience went to a Dave Matthews concert an hour away in West Palm Beach, and I don’t entirely buy that.

  • Carriefan1

    Billboard 200:
    #129 – Phillip Phillips (10 weeks) : -30

    #86 – My Eyes – Gwen Sebastian (13 weeks) : -8
    #89 – Bo$$ – Fifth Harmony (3 weeks) : +1
    #106 – Later On – The Swon Brothers (8 weeks) : +2

    #4 – Bo$$ – Fifth Harmony

    #49 – My Eyes – Gwen Sebastian
#75 – See You Tonight – Scotty McCreery

  • ptebwwong

Here’s a list of Idol alums with a Billboard #1 for the Christian Songs chart:

    – Colton Dixon “Never Gone”
    – Mandisa “Stronger”
    – Mandisa “Overcomer”

I’m not sure if they were all #1’s on the Mediabase charts.

  • Anny_nanny

Well, if “Idol’s entire target audience” love DMB so much, we must not be surprised that Phillip this show won. Damn! I forgot that only I was surprised by his win.

  • babyspock

There’s no information on how much each show sold. Just the combined numbers and neither show sold out.

  • mmb

It is always worth looking for tickets on the day of, or day before a “sold out” shows — 1) there are tickets that are held for the band/production and unused/ tickets are released last minute, 2) the venue often will release additional tickets (sometimes obstructed view, or side view) seats at the last minute if ticket demand has been high

  • Kathleen Moore

Ruben and Taylor were performing in a concert

  • Mel432

If you don’t know how much each show sold, maybe the first one sold out. I would say 99.2% is close enough to being sold out, especially when they added these crappy seats at the last minute.

  • babyspock

    http://www.billboard.com/biz/current-boxscore

Yes, technically neither sold out. But 99% is close enough.

  • girlygirl

    thanks!

  • Mel432

How big was their venue? 10,000+?

  • mmb

you can see from the Billboard box scores above how the venue sells different numbers of seats for different shows — Lionel Richie sold out Mohegan Sun arena. The sellout was 6571 seats. But more tickets were available for the QAL show each night — about 1000 total over the 2 nights.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

It was an outdoor festival — Schaeffer Eye Center CityFest (formerly S.E.C. Crawfish Boil) at Railroad Park. Local news puts attendance at “thousands” ( http://www.abc3340.com/story/26122135/schaeffer-eye-center-cityfest-draws-thousands ), FWIW.

There’s a photo of the crowd on S.E.C.’s FB: https://www.facebook.com/schaeffereyecentercrawfishboil

CityFest was free, with food trucks, beer, games, and live bands. If you simply want something to do on a nice summer night, it was clearly the better deal.

  • ptebwwong

Apparently, it’s a new album with their “essential hits.” However, the band apparently didn’t know about the release.

I had given up on finding tickets for the Detroit QAL concert. On a lark the night before the concert (at midnight), I found a few great seats had opened up on Ticketmaster. I paid 125.00 for a seat on the floor up front near the stage!!! I felt extremely lucky!!

Top Selling Debut Artists of 2014 (so far)

    http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/newsPage.cgi?news09989m01

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspo.com/ ZsusK

You need a passport or enhanced driver’s license to cross the Ambassador Bridge from Detroit to Windsor. That puts a crimp on the number from that area who could attend. But, the Detroit show was cancelled for a reason. Low ticket sales. People just don’t aren’t invested in the show enough to go to the concerts anymore.

  • PAwoma

I’ve lived in Southfield, Malaya’s home town most of my life and my family still all live in the area. Everyone I know has the papers to cross into Canada and do it all the time. That is no excuse not to fill up a small casino in Windsor, sorry.

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspo.com/ ZsusK

I think we agree. I said the Detroit venue cancelled due to low ticket sales. Therefore, both girls combined weren’t able to bring in the necessary crowd. But, I still wouldn’t use Windsor as an example of a “hometown” show.

  • PAwoma

We’ll just have to disagree on that. When I lived in the detroit area, I went to shows in WIndsor more frequently then detroit. They actually get a lot of up and coming acts. And, both Malaya and Gena said their friends and family were attending the show. It’s a quick trip to windsor through the tunnel.
