Today is Wednesday, today is the day of “Idols In Concert-Stats”, not “Sales”.

Edit: Damn! And where we take the sales figures on Wednesday? I only statistics on concerts found. (

  • Kirsten

And where we take the sales figures on Wednesday? I only statistics on concerts found.

Maybe the boxscores came out a day early since tomorrow is a holiday? Usually, they don’t start leaking until Wednesday night.

We have a theme each day of the week for numbers.

  • CanadianLady

Happy to see James and Candice tracking.

    Two questions:

I take it Cumulus stations haven’t added Scotty’s song? Might they if he hits top 20?

Any chance songs from Scotty’s Christmas CD might get some adds ? Do they have to push a single or might stations just add something? He has several amazing songs on that CD.

  • Craigin

Good to see Leona getting some adds! I’m loving One More Sleep!

  • LongKissGoodnight

From Yahoo’s “Chart Watch” and Billboard’s articles:

Daughtry’s new “Baptized” album arrives at No. 6 with just over 55,000,
securing the band its fourth consecutive top 10 studio effort (it’s
entire output). Their last album, 2011′s “Break the Spell,” debuted and
peaked at No. 8 off a start of 129,000.

Kelly Clarkson’s “Wrapped In Red” album descends 6-9 with 44,000 (though it’s up by 6%).

Phillip Phillips’ The World From The Side Of The Moon tops the 500K mark in 2013 sales this week. The album sold an additional 533K copies in 2012. (Give American Idol the bulk of the credit for the 2012 sales. Give Phillips’ personal appeal the bulk of the credit for the 2013 sales.)

Closing out the top 10 is Minneapolis radio station KTCZ with its new “Cities 97 Sampler, Live From Studio C: Vol. 25.” The live compilation blasts in at No. 10 — a record high for the long-running series.

It sold 40,000 copies in its debut frame — the entire production run of the annual album. The set features live performances recorded at the station over the past year and 100% of the proceeds benefit local charities. (Due to publishing and label gratis licensing restrictions for charity albums, the production run of the album was limited to 40,000.)

The album features Passenger, fun. and Phillip Phillips, and was available exclusively at local Target stores in Minneapolis for $32.97. According to KTCZ, the compilation has raised $11.5 million for local charities since its launch in 1989.

With 120,000 copies sold Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP 2 returns to the #1 spot on The Billboard 200, displacing Lady Gaga’s ARTPOP, which tumbles to #8 with 46,000 after a single week on top.

Sales of Gaga’s album dropped by 82% this week. Only three #1 albums in
the Nielsen SoundScan era have experienced such steep drops in their
second week. (Madonna’s MDNA dropped by 87% in its second week; Gaga’s
Born This Way dropped by 84%; Mac Miller’s Blue Slide Park dropped by
83%.) But it’s not fair to make too much of this. Albums are simply
taking steeper second week drops than they used to. Of the 10 #1 albums
that have experienced second week drops of 78% or more, nine have been
    released since December 2010.

(Billboard notes: It’s become more common to see No. 1 debuts dip by more than 75% in their second week, as increased focus is placed on first-week sales and pre-orders. That emphasis can drive debut sales to great heights, but also create situations where an album cannot sustain those front-loaded
    sales into its second week.)

The Marshall Mathers LP 2 has sold 1,124,000 copies in its first three weeks, which puts it at #6 for the year-to-date.

(Give American Idol the bulk of the credit for the 2012 sales. Give Phillips’ personal appeal the bulk of the credit for the 2013 sales.)

That’s a great endorsement for Phillip.

    UK Midweek Charts:
    1. One Direction – Midnight Memories * (144,887)
    2. Gary Barlow – Since I Saw You Last * (58,3k)
    3. Robbie Williams – Swings Both Ways * (33,9k)
    4. Olly Murs – Right Place Right Time ^ (22,1k)
    5. Boyzone – BZ 20 * (15k)

So the TOP 5 features two boybands, two solo boybanders and one Olly Murs.

One Direction’s Midnight Memories is heading to
the top of the UK artist albums chart this weekend with the highest
    first-week sales of the year.

The boy band’s third album by the end of business on Tuesday had already outsold the entire first-week sales of their Syco debut Up All Night and should easily surpass the
opening tally of second album Take Me Home, according to Official Charts
Company statistics. Midnight Memories is up to 144,887 in the
week so far, compared to Up All Night shifting 138,631 copies in its
initial week in 2011 and Take Me Home managing 155,316 sales a year ago.

One Direction are also on course to achieve the highest first-week sales
for an artist album this year, beating the current best total of 165,091
achieved by Daft Punk’s Columbia release Random Access Memories back in
May, while tracks from their new album have flooded the singles market.
All 14 cuts from the standard edition of the album are somewhere in the
midweek Top 10 as are the four tracks on the extended version of the
    album.

That’s what I have been saying. Statistically apart from anyone not named Carrie or Kelly the Idol sales are very front loaded. Very few of them are a presence in BB200 6 months down the road. He has never been out of BB200 after full 12 months on the chart,.

He sells at least 4-5K a week when he tours with John Mayer and 2K less when he has an off week or doing his own headlining show where one presumes, majority of those present have the album or at least have access to it.

The sales are not because of his 2 singles on radio either. If it was just because of radio-play he would have the same sales every week. It is because he sells his music to the uninitiated with the live performances.

  • Baptized

Daughtry’s Waiting for Superman will be sent to Top 40 radio come January 2014. http://www.fmqb.com/Article.asp?id=16691

I’m surprised Daughtry opened at #6. Where did his 2,454 sales go? HDD had him at 57,454 while Billboard said a little over 55,000. Hm.

Daughtry’s doing not too bad as similar band 30 SECONDS TO MARS opened at #6 earlier this year with 52,000 copies sold.

Also – I’ve heard Daughtry’s Baptized will be $5 in Walmart this coming Friday. Might give the sales a little boost.

  • LongKissGoodnight

It’ important to remember, that while highly accurate the final numbers that HDD provides are still predictions.

So 3,5% difference between the projected HDD’s numbers and final Billboard numbers makes for a very small (and normal) margin of arrow.

  • elliegrll

There are a few more names to throw in, especially Daughtry’s. It’s too soon to say that Phillip has found an audience like Daughtry, Kelly, Fantasia and Carrie did, but so far there are some positive signs.

The sales are not because of his 2 singles on radio either. If it was just because of radio-play he would have the same sales every week. It is because he sells his music to the uninitiated with the live performances.

I think that that’s going too far. I’m sure that Phillip has sold some albums based on his live performances, but logically it makes more sense to conclude that airplay is driving force.

  • Mia

Look at his weekly sales stats is all I am going to say and correlate it with the number of shows in the continental USA the week prior. Sales were 2K lower for weeks he was in S America, the weeks where he had no shows or less than 3 shows, 3 weeks that he was off while JM was in Europe.

  • Amy Beth

HDD refuses to round its projected numbers, giving them the aura of exactness. They’re not.

  • elliegrll

Human nature just doesn’t work like that. It’s just highly unlikely that a significant number of people are going to go out and buy Phillip’s album based on just one concert. Even with those that do, a big factor is that they are aware of who he is before they attend the concert. And the radio is the reason for the awareness.

  • Mia

The lowest Capacity venue for the John Mayer tour was Red Rocks at 6000. As it sold out, they had 2 shows there. The average amphitheater capacity minus the one extra show in New Hampshire was between 12,000 to 20,000. If we assume that what P2 said is true that the venues were at least 60-70% full when he started his set= he was performing in front of at the least 3500 and at the most 12,000 people even factoring in non sold out shows.

With on average 4-5 shows a week, he was performing in front of at least 30- 40,000 people a week.

Even if less than 5% of the crowd ever bought his album it would be roughly 2000.

  • Madilo

“the production run of the album was limited to 40,000.”

why ? if they can do more than that why limit it to 40K ?

  • LongKissGoodnight

Ammm… The answer to your question was given in the first part of the sentence:

“Due to publishing and label gratis licensing restrictions for charity albums”

You are welcome to do an in-depth research of the issue, if you feel like it.

  • mmb

David Cook, Adam Lambert, and Jordin Sparks all saw their debut albums stay in the BB200 for almost a full year. I may be wrong but I think Scotty McCreery’s debut album spent the better part of a year on the BB200 as well

  • Madilo

Thanks, i’ll leave it at that :)

Happy with those numbers, considering no big promo for Scotty–just working radio.:))

  • Madilo

    Why Cassedee isn’t there ?

  • ptebwwong

    deleted

  • Lexie O’Neill

Roughstock only reported the Top 20 country albums (which you can’t tell from the numbers above, which are overall Billboard rankings Top #200). Scotty’s CWSM is 16. So, Cassadee might be below those numbers (the lowest is 3K).

  • Madilo

    Thank you guys :)

  • Liteasy

Now I know why Daughtry released his album last week and not Black Friday week. He never would have been in the #6 spot with all that are being released.

  • Liteasy

Walmart’s around here don’t sell Idol albums except for Carrie. $5 – might as well give it away!

  • Anny_nanny

Adam leave BB200 for two or three weeks before the anniversary of the release of the album, so that Phillip surpassed him. But I am very pleased that P2 is compared with Adam, Jordin and David. And not with Scotty (which had a great sale, but the higher start), Lee or Kris, while I love these guys.

  • Baptized

Black Friday. Everything sells cheaply on that day.

  • Mateja Praznik

THE FUTURE OF MEMORIES: Our latest sales projection for One Direction’s Midnight Memories is 525-575k, with the odds favoring a bow that beats that of the SYCO/Columbia lads’ prior release. Just how big will the Pop princes’ new one (still #1 at iTunes,
with the #3 single as well) get? Could Hanukkah gift cards tip the
balance? You bet your latkes! And speaking of latkes, we full bloated
just thinking about the next few days. (11/27p)

  • Amy Beth

There’s a pretty good chance that the people he was performing for already owned his album.

Even as an opening act, most concert goers seek out artists they know and like.

  • curlyenta

    $5? Already? Hmm.

  • Lori

Well Walmart isn’t going to put an indie artist who can’t move his CDs on sale. There’s no point. Stores pick the popular artists that have proven they can draw customers into the music section.

  • elliegrll

Considering that it is just one retailer, and that that retailer is a the main player when it comes to selling physical cds, it would seem that this is a way for the label to make nice with the retailer, so that Walmart will give the cd prime placement in their stores, as well as make sure that their circulars prominently feature the cd. Starting with Daughtry’s first album, RCA has always used Walmart as one of the main ways that they’ve promoted the group.

  • Tess Herself

Touche’. It’s called a loss leader. Something you know will attract traffic and get people into the store to buy, buy, buy. Actually, I think, a pretty good endorsement of the continued popularity of Daughtry.

  • elliegrll

I was going to mention this, but decided not to. At least Daughtry has an album that a retailer will stock. All of the brick and mortar stores are cutting back on the number of cds that they carry.

  • curlyenta

Walmart will stock whatever arrangement they have with the label and distributer. It has nothing to do with who it is. The fact that Daughtry has shed about 50% of his fans with each subsequent CD, I’m actually surprised they are stocking it.

  • Anny_nanny

    Chart News ?@chartnews
US album sales: #6 @CHRIS_Daughtry, Baptized 55,031 (debut).

  • elliegrll

Actually, it is about the artist/act. Retailers buy the albums from the label, and even though they can send back unsold stock they rarely do. Because of the drop in physical album sales the music sections of all stores has gotten smaller. Because of that retailers are not going to carry music that they don’t think will move. If it was as simple as the label paying a retailer off new acts wouldn’t find that their albums aren’t well stocked.

I’m actually surprised they are stocking it.

Isn’t this a contradiction of your first sentence? As it shows, Walmart controls what they will carry, and the amount that they will carry.

  • Madilo

    Adele :)

  • Madilo

The predictions dropped what happened ?

  • Mateja Praznik

They had huge pre-orders, so they are front-loaded.

Anyway, it’s Black Friday week, so it’s hard to predict.

  • Madilo

Yeah black friday is so not easy to predict, so let’s hope they exceed expectations.
Do you know if they had an increase last balck friday ?

  • Not fit to print

Whatever the distributer arrangement, Walmart calls some pretty strong shots, so it’s probably safe to say that a cd positioned as a loss leader on Black Friday has their confidence and seal of approval.

  • Not fit to print

Radio drives single sales and Philip certainly has those. CD sales are a different matter.

Philip was opening for John Mayer. It is human nature to go and see an artist you love, regardless of who the opening act is. The opening act has 30-45 minutes to convince you that they are worth the time and trouble.

Each night Philip had a chance to play a huge chunk of his cd for people whose musical taste leaned towards his style of music. The way human nature works, some of them could very well have liked enough of what they heard to go out and buy it.

The correlation between weekly sales drops while Philip was in South America does suggest that this theory might be true.

  • Not fit to print

Most people who love an artist turn out for that artist and don’t care a hoot who the opening act is. If they reference the opening act it is only to decide whether to arrive late or, based on the media info, give them a whirl.

  • CanadianLady

Speaking from personal experience, most of the time if I really want to see the headliner, I don’t even look to see who the opening act is (I still have no idea who opened for Scotty this spring in Niagara falls and I heard her whole set).

If I’d known who Eric Church was, I’d never have arrived on time for the Brad Paisley concert here a few years ago!

And yes, if it turns out I like the opening act, I will often buy a CD to support them.
