Rounded numbers from Ken Barnes over at Idol Chatter.

Please post numbers as you find them. Thanks.

  • Kirsten

Please note that the above numbers are the Top 50 song from the download charts plus a few extra songs that have made à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“interestingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ gains in the top 200. Later today, Ken Barnes at Idol Chatter (USA Today) will come out with the full list of Idols in the top 200. We get data as it dribbles out.

Here is some of the airplay chart (this is a differential from last week so the numbers in brackets are gains or losses in millions of audience impressions since last week). Before recurrents are removed:

No. 12 – Jennifer Hudson (plus 0.8 million) lw 12
No. 37 – David Archuleta (plus 1.1 million) lw 42
No. 206 – David Cook (plus 1.1 million) lw 241

Jennifer is number 2 on the R&B airplay chart.

Later today, we should get HDD’s projections for the album’s sales week based on one day’s sales. Those numbers are subject to change, but generally are in the right ballparkish range at this point. They are what they are. Let’s all play nice, shall we?

  • jpfan

Numbers. Jumps up and down. Wow, HDD puts on the projections so early. Looks like Taylor Swift is heading for a monster week, T Pain should be 2 and Archie a strong #3. I’ll go with 160K as my pick for Archie’s first week. The days of 300K and 600K first weeks for Idols are history.

Crush is going platinum very soon.

  • Kirsten

Here are the numbers for first week debuts for runner-ups (just in case anybody is wondering):

    1. Clay – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Measure of a Manà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (Oct 14, 2003) – 612,859 (# 1)
    2. Bo – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Real Thingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (December 13, 2005) – 226,976 (# 4)
    3. Katharine – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Katharine McPheeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (January 30, 2007) – 115,761 (# 2)
    4. Blake – “Blake Lewis” (December 4, 2007) – 98K (#10)
    5. Justin – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Justin Guarinià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (June 10, 2003) – 57,000 (# 20)
    6. Diana – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Blue Skiesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (December 7, 2004) – 47,000 ( # 52)

And here is how Archie’s labelmate fared last year:
    Jordin Sparks – “Jordin Sparks” (November 20, 2007) – 119,119 (#10)

  • frogcooke

It going to be close next week for platinum for crush. If it was a 4% last week I dont thin kits a stretch for around 60k for the single, then you got the album version of crush(its at 48 on itunes) so that will be added to it. It will be interesting next week lol

  • jpfan

Thanks for the first week sales, Kristin. Amazing how low Jordin’s first week was and how well she’s done. OSAAT is also going platinum. I think Crush needs two more weeks to sell a million but it’s a lock.

  • bluejeans

holy cow, i didn’t know Clay Aiken sold that much CDs in his opening week. 600,000 is mind-boggling. too bad it’s not the same for him now. i’m really interested in seeing the ranking for BOTH past winners and runner-ups. do you have the list, Kirsten? does Clay still have the highest opening week sales?

  • ggdoorsfan

When I didn’t think I could take any more great David A news….. WOW WOW WOW once again at the numbers for Crush…… Stability and consistency is thy name! This song is HELLA tenacious, and is just 81k or so away from PLATINUM…

Question for the numbers and charts gurus —> will the sales from the singles version and now the album version be added together and factored into next weeks totals? Asking because if so, IF so, Crush may sell enough to be in Platinum status in next weeks’s reporting period….

  • Kirsten

Wow, HDD puts on the projections so early.

Their claim to fame. Even BB will put out some early predictions for exciting weeks. AllAccess also has it’s StreetPulse thing (which I haven’t followed for a while, but tends to be ballparkish for rankings as well by the end of the week. Their percentages are very rough guidelines, but I’ve never seen them close to accurate).

Looks like Taylor Swift is heading for a monster week, T Pain should be 2 and Archie a strong #3.

Yes, Taylor Swift is dominating everything this week. Take a look at the Country single’s chart and Taylor is everywhere. She owns all the Top 10 slots, 17 of the top 30 and 25 of the Top 100. She has 14 songs on the iTunes Top 100 singles (some of those sales will be combined). And thats after dropping weekly singles that sold very well for the past how man weeks? I’d be very surprised if she doesn’t win, but don’t count out T Pain. Those rappers sell very well in their first week.

All Access doesn’t have a combined chart for Street Pulse, but here is where those three sit on the Top 40 Chart:
    1. T-Pain
    2. Taylor Swift
    5. David Archuleta

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll go with 160K as my pick for Archieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s first week. The days of 300K and 600K first weeks for Idols are history.

I suck at the prediction game. I’m pretty sure that he will sell more than either Blake or Jordin last year. I’m also pretty sure he won’t beat Clay for the best Idol first week either. That’s about all I’ll commit to.

  • Kirsten

ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m really interested in seeing the ranking for BOTH past winners and runner-ups. do you have the list, Kirsten?

    Yep:

    1. Clay – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Measure of a Manà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (Oct 14, 2003) – 612,859 (# 1)
    2. Ruben – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Soulfulà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (Dec 9, 2003) – 416,569 (# 1)
    3. Carrie – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Some Heartsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (November 15, 2005) – 314,549 (# 2)
    4. Taylor – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Taylor Hicksà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (Dec 12, 2006) – 298,199 (# 2)
    5. Kelly – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Thankfulà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (April 15, 2003) – 297,000 (# 1)
    6. Fantasia – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Free Yourselfà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (November 23, 2004) – 239,389 (#8)
    7. Bo – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Real Thingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (December 13, 2005) – 226,976 (# 4)
    8. Jordin – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Jordin Sparksà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (November 20, 2007) – 119,119 (#10)
    9. Katharine – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Katharine McPheeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (January 30, 2007) – 115,761 (# 2)
    10. Blake – “Blake Lewis” (December 4, 2007) – 98K (#10)
    11. Justin – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Justin Guarinià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (June 10, 2003) – 57,000 (# 20)
    12. Diana – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Blue Skiesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (December 7, 2004) – 47,000 ( # 52)

does Clay still have the highest opening week sales?

Yep. Season 2 is champs of the first week sales.

  • Kirsten

Question for the numbers and charts gurus à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ > will the sales from the singles version and now the album version be added together and factored into next weeks totals?

Yes. The sales from both will be combined.

  • frogcooke

Yeah I think Taylor and T-Pain are the biggest competition this week.. though who knows how those now cd’s will sell lol and Christina(even though its target only)

  • bluejeans

thanks for that, Kirsten. of course it helped Clay that his album was released relatively early.

i didn’t follow season 5, so i had no idea Taylor Hicks sold that much in his first week. impressive. i think David Archuleta can hit at least 200,000 easily. 250k, maybe. i’m not very good at this number predictions game though.

  • ggdoorsfan

Thanks Kirsten! Will be on pins and needles watching for the sales info here next week for Crush…. :smile1_tb:

  • frogcooke

I dont know if he’ll hit 200k or not.. I’ll take anything over 100k LOL

  • bluejeans

yeah, anything over 100k these days is pretty good. but “crush” has done so well that i’m 80% confident that he can hit 200k.

  • cruzceleste

Crush is a fighter… no matter what some critics think of the song is amazing how steady it is… when a new song comes around it will go down a little and then back up…

    Go Crush…

I don ´t care that Archie don ´t get the first spot this week, but it will be awesome that his album number sales in general were good in the long term, I will take steady and good numbers to a first spot anyday…

    Go Archie…

  • E

    Go David Archuleta! consistent sales.

I’d be happy if his album sales equals Jordin’s first week. hehe for someone who people say may not cut it mainstream, this is good. :D

  • poporange

    Thanks for the numbers Kristen..
Taylor Swift since the name was braught up some information
–Like Elliot is signed by an indie lable hers is under one keith Urban and a former dreamworks guy and sold 3 million cds .(lable listed as indie under wiki)

Daivd A ” Crush” is doing quite well and probably in the minority that thought Daivd A would fit in the mainstreme.

  • E

T Pain and Archie in the top 3, Jive ftw lol

  • frogcooke

lol E and yeah Jive FTW

  • beachn

    poporange
Could you clarify your post? I thought Keith recorded under the
Capitol Nashville label and Elliot’s label is Hickory.

  • abbysee

Go Crush! Don’t want to play a numbers game, I think # 3 behind Taylor Swift and T-Pain will be more than acceptable. If his cd is as stable as Crush then he is going to be just fine.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

yeah, anything over 100k these days is pretty good. but à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“crushà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ has done so well that ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m 80% confident that he can hit 200k.

Impressive download numbers for singles don’t necessarily translate into impressive numbers for albums. Having said that, I think Archie will do well this week.

  • poporange

Sorry just amazed Taylor S is doing soo well because personally E ,Daivd A extra are much better vocally.

Question looking at the numbers they go up and down when do you know it is beyond the hype of IDol? Do most buy on look or appearance or what is so called in?

  • ozarka

It’s amazing how well Crush continues to sell. I figured the sales would be going downward by now. Instead it’s the opposite… a 1% increase last week and now this week, a 4% increase. I’m pretty sure it will be a sizable increase again next week because of all of the hullabaloo going on this week. I can smell platinum right around the corner. Go CRUSH!!

  • E

and go Jordin! love OSAT. 3rd platinum single soon, and her album is also almost there I think?

  • sma11ie

Very interesting numbers. Thanks, Kirsten! Do you have Daughtry’s as well? Thank you in advance!

It’s kind of amazing to see how the dog days of record sales are behind us, with the overall decline in the industry. But my first reaction was: how the heck did Clay get an album together by October? We’ve seen both Davids basically bust their butts like crazy to release their albums by mid-November. And according to that list, most of the other Idols weren’t even as fast as the Davids (ignoring the Season 1 timeline difference of course).

  • soundscene

Those All Access StreetPulse stats have already changed…

Mainstream Top 40 and Hot AC (same order, both charts):

    – 1 Taylor Swift Fearless UMGD/ Universal –
    – 2 David Archuleta David Archuleta SBME/ Zomba Label Group –
    – 3 Tpain Thr33 Ringz SBME/ Zomba Label Group –

    Archie moved up.

But then there’s Enya and NOW! (I still haven’t met anybody who buys this, but apparently they do).

Speaking of which… on the AC StreetPulse chart:

    – 1 Enya Winter Came WEA/ Reprise –
    – 2 Taylor Swift Fearless UMGD/ Universal –
37 3 David Archuleta David Archuleta SBME/ Zomba Label Group 22925

Since when did Archie sell CDs last week?

And just because I find this funny. Archie is also on StreetPulse’s rhythmic chart:

    – 1 David Archuleta David Archuleta SBME/ Zomba Label Group –
    – 2 Tpain Thr33 Ringz SBME/ Zomba Label Group –

Oh, and yes… Go Jive! lol.

  • cheese

Wow, Crush and Magic Rainbowz should both be platinum two weeks from now – pretty cool!

But my first reaction was: how the heck did Clay get an album together by October?

IIRC, the AI Tour was not nearly as long back in Season 2. (Plus, KLC recorded her album in 90 minutes or whatever, so I guess it’s doable).

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

    Reminder:

This isn’t TWOP. If I ban you. YOU. ARE. BANNED. Making up a new name will merely get you re-banned.

  • cruzceleste

I still havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t met anybody who buys this, but apparently they do

I had bought Now This is What I Call Music, or used to it, thats the way I found out about Robbie Williams ´ Milleniun… I also discovered 3 Doors Down with The Now 10 I think…

  • frogcooke

from a washington post article… just a ball park about Taylor.. lol
“In fact, he said, based on release-day data from major retailers, 600,000 was well within reach.”

  • Kirsten

Do you have Daughtryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s as well?

Sure. Here are the first week numbers for the top 5 debut weeks for non-winners and non-runner-ups (ie outside of the top 2):

    1. Daughtry “Daughtry” (November 21, 2006) – 303,677 (#2)
    2. Elliott Yamin “Elliott Yamin” (March 20, 2007)- 90,439 (#3)
    3. Kellie Pickler “Small Town Girl” (October 31, 2006) – 79,133 (#9)
    4. Bucky Covington “Bucky Covington” (April 17, 2007) – 60,814 (#4)
    5. Josh Gracin “Joshua Gracin” (June 15, 2004) – 57,048 (#11)

  • Kirsten

Since when did Archie sell CDs last week?

They are called “street violations”. They are CDs that sell the week before the debut week (not pre-orders, but stores that put them out for sale before the official Tuesday). Record companies don’t like them because they create the possibility of illegal leaks, give one vendor an advantage over those taht are following the rules and they bleed sales from debut weeks.

Take StreetPulse with a grain of salt. They are nowhere as good as this prediction stuff as HDD and appear to work from some kind of building chart. HDD has obviously constructed a number of mathematical models to project their sales and based on their relative accuracy, I think their models take into consideration a number of factors (and that they may have different models for different genres). Just watch, I’ll be proved wrong. HDD probably doesn’t use any math and just has some psychics working for them. Or psychos. One of the two.

  • FolkFan

I know that Taylor Swift does not have the kind of voice that would excel on AI, but I think that a lot of people really like her and specifically like her songwriting. I find her songs to be age-appropriate, yet interesting for someone outside of the age group, which is hard to do. A number of friends of mine who don’t typically listen to country have taken notice of her, so I would not be surprised if she sells tons of CDs this week.

  • gabam

Taylor Swift’s CD, “Fearless”, is selling for $3.99 on Amazon.com for the digital MP3 CD. No wonder she’s selling so many. I guess they wanted to be #1 and it didn’t matter that they are losing at least $6.00 on each sale.

    Link:
    http://www.amazon.com/Fearless/dp/B001KPK6Q2/ref=pd_ts_th_1?pf_rd_p=463395051&pf_rd_s=center-6&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=163856011&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0QRG97RWC6N158YZFAG3

ETA or go through MJ’s link to Amazon.

I wonder if her new CD is on sale at other places for a very low price.

  • sma11ie

    Thanks, Kirsten.

IIRC, the AI Tour was not nearly as long back in Season 2.

    Thanks- makes sense.

(Plus, KLC recorded her album in 90 minutes or whatever, so I guess ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s doable).

LOL, I forgot about her. Which, judging from her sales, seems to be a pretty common phenomenon. Poor KLC. Do not wish that on anyone…

  • tinawina

I never really understood the complaints about Taylor Swift’s voice. Yeah, she’s not the strongest vocalist, but she’s a singer/songwriter. Most of those aren’t the best technical singers. She does write really good relatable pop/county songs, especially for someone so young. So I totally get why she sells records. But maybe it’s just me.

Archie is going to kick all kinds of butt this week. LOL. I can’t wait for the projections. I am excited for him!

  • cheese

I think Taylor Swift would probably be #1 this week with or without the Amazon sale. Amazon has a pretty small share of the download market, I think. Archie should have a great week regardless. Can’t wait to see his numbers.

(speaking of cheap CDs, anyone who plans to hand out either David’s CD like candy this holiday season might want to wait until Black Friday to buy more – I think a lot of hot titles will be selling for 5 or 6 bucks at the big box retailers.)

  • latingrl2005

Taylor, also had a huge Pre-Sale on her website with do 2 different deals.

1- for $45 the 1st 10,000 fans could send a picture to her to be included on a mosaic poster that comes with the cd.

2- for $75 fans could get a gift box filled with Taylor stuff plus the cd.

So, this might be the reason for the low price on Amazon, they already made tons of money before the release date.

  • pb_maxxx

    kirsten…

you forgot to include jennifer hudson’s numbers… which should place her right behind Chris Daughtry.

  • sma11ie

I never really understood the complaints about Taylor Swiftà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s voice. Yeah, sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not the strongest vocalist, but sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a singer/songwriter. Most of those arenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t the best technical singers.

I think it’s because she’s in a genre that values real singers and live performances. I’ve never been a fan of country music, but there are some major powerhouse voices and really impressive live performers in this genre. I really like some of her songs, but personally, I cannot stand to watch her live because her singing is cringe-inducing for me.

  • mac

She does write really good relatable pop/county songs, especially for someone so young. So I totally get why she sells records. But maybe ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just me.

It’s not just you. I feel this way also. Having the best voice doesn’t mean a lot to me. I am drawn to the artists who are good songwriters and are able to entertain me. Taylor Swift seems to do this. I am not a teen/tween, but yet I am drawn to her music. I find someone who justs sings on stage “even though they may have a magnificent voice” very boring. Like LaToya London on AI. (sorry any LaYoya fans out there), I thought she probably had the best voice that year, but I found her extremely boring and was not drawn to her music.

I will agree that Taylor hits a few bum notes when she sings live, but she does entertain me. Her voice though on her albums, however, sounds amazing. Listen to “White Horses” for an example. They played that song during a Gray’s Anatomy episode and it was beautifully sung.

But then thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Enya and NOW! (I still havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t met anybody who buys this, but apparently they do).

I have bought NOW! albums in the past.

  • ozarka

I don’t understand why Taylor Swift is doing so well at iTunes. If I can get her album for 8 dollars less at Amazon. That’s where I would be buying it.

  • Kirsten

you forgot to include jennifer hudsonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s numbersà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ which should place her right behind Chris Daughtry.

Right you are. I keep forgetting that was her debut album since it happened such a long time afterwards when she’d developed a new fan base elsewhere (i.e. I dno’t give AI much credit for her success. Sure, she might not have gotten the Dreamgirls audition without it, but it did not guarantee her getting the role (Fantasia tried out for the role and did not get it) or her follow-on success. IMO. Go Jen!):

I will agree that Taylor hits a few bum notes when she sings live, but she does entertain me.

Everytime I have ever seen her sing live, she has hit a LOT of bum notes. So many, I can’t stand to listen to her because it just grates. I also had the misfortune of listening to her sing live with somebody who can sing in tune and the results were nightmarish.

I agree that it takes more than a nice voice to be a good singer, but I think Taylor is the prime example of somebody who maybe should just write songs or sing them in the studio where autotune is her very best friend in the whole world.

I find someone who justs sings on stage à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“even though they may have a magnificent voiceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ very boring.

LaToya was kind of lifeless, but I can name a lot of singers that did not write most (or any) of their songs who can connect way better than some of these singer/songwriters do. Ella Fitzgerald is probably my favourite female singer and she sang other people’s songs. Some people should just sing. Some people should just write songs. Some people can do both. Some people do both and maybe shouldn’t. I think it’s nice when a songwriter can sing their own songs, but I find lots people who can just sing very entertaining. I enjoy the songwriting skills of many people who can’t sing professionally. These are two very different talents and I don’t think somebody necessarily has to do both. Just my humble opinion on the matter.

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t understand why Taylor Swift is doing so well at iTunes. If I can get her album for 8 dollars less at Amazon. Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s where I would be buying it.

I wonder if that has to do with the complete your album feature on iTunes, which is not available on Amazon. She’s been releasing singles which all got great iTunes sales every week, so clearly her fans are already on iTunes. And I’m just guessing if they already bought a handful of singles, it’d only cost them a few bucks to complete the album? I dunno though. But mainly, I think Amazon is such a small player relative to iTunes in the digital world, that most people have no idea they have these MP3 album deals. Personally, I’m a big iTunes user, and I never even realized Amazon sometimes sellss MP3 albums for less until someone posted here about the Snow Patrol album recently (btw, thanks to whoever that was, because it was a great deal).

  • tinawina

I think ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s because sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s in a genre that values real singers and live performances. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve never been a fan of country music, but there are some major powerhouse voices and really impressive live performers in this genre. I really like some of her songs, but personally, I cannot stand to watch her live because her singing is cringe-inducing for me.

Maybe that’s it then. I’ve never seen her sing live. I just hear her on the radio and the songs sound good to me. LOL. But since I don’t buy live performances I don’t care anyway. But I get why she would drive some people crazy.

Just watch, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be proved wrong. HDD probably doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t use any math and just has some psychics working for them. Or psychos. One of the two.

Oh, don’t worry–I’m taking StreetPulse for whatever its worth (and I’m not sure how much it’s worth). I just thought the charts were interesting. HDD projections should be up soon.

It’s unfortunate about the street violations. I know that a few people got CDs from Walmart on Monday. That could account for part of it, but I didn’t figure it would be enough for the album to chart at #37 on the AC chart for StreetPulse. Sad thing is that those sales won’t count for anything in this week’s numbers.

    225-240K is HDD’s projection for Archie. :)

That would put him, as of now, at #2. Heee!

  • tinawina

    WOW. GO ARCHIE!!!! :clap_tb:

  • E

Really? that’s like over 100k my prediction lol!

  • Allison

IIRC, the AI Tour was not nearly as long back in Season 2.

Yes Season 2 tour opened on July 8, 2003 and closed on Aug. 31, 2003.

I remember Clay recorded in LA, but also flew to Miami and to London for a few tracks. He said he was so exhausted that they let him sleep in the London studio up to the minute he had to record the vocals (for “Touch”). He was severely jet-lagged.

OK, from all the lists posted above, hereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s all debut Idol album first week release sales (I think the gospel acts are excepted):

Oh there is no way I’m adding all of that. LMAO.

  • Kirsten

    225-240K is Archieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s prediction from HDD. :)

Highter than I expected. I was thinking he might do in the 160K range. See, this is why I don’t do predictions.

  • frogcooke

nice projection from HDD… I wouldnt of guessed that high… LOL

  • Allison

    thanks, Kirsten for those numbers

    225-240K is Archieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s prediction from HDD. :)

That would put him, as of now, at #2. Heee!

Jive was very smart in having so many different versions of the album. I’ll bet a lot of people bought multiple copies of the albums just to get all the songs. I don’t necessarily agree with this tactic. I think it is just taking advantage of the customers and ripping them off, but from a marketing and selling perspective…it seems to work.

Wow…those teens are CD buying machines!!!!

Congratulations to David. Those are impressive numbers.

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

Those are some nice looking projections for Archie’s CD. :)

  • E

I dont believe that projection is mostly the result of multiple buyings? could it? but we shall see on the 2nd week sales number I guess, and not just teens lol. I didn’t think he could sell over 150k.

  • jpfan

Wow, great numbers for Archie. Fantastic. Plus I bet the album has legs just like Jordin’s and sells more off the hit singles it spins out. Taylor is predicted to sell 500K. Wow, teens rule. I can’t believe Archie will be #2 ahead of T Pain.

  • MJack

This is SWEET number for me. :)

  • cruzceleste

Really good numbers for David, I hope his numbers keep being good after his first week sales…

    Go David… Good Luck….

  • Kirsten

    A few notes:

    225-240K is Archieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s prediction from HDD. :)

    HDD is cautioning:
One caveat: With Veteran’s Day this Tuesday and many consumers off work and out of school, Tuesday sales could be somewhat higher than normal.

So, the projections could go down. Or up. Maybe everybody stayed home because it was raining. Who knows. So, don’t bet all your money with the bookies that these numbers will hold.

That would put him, as of now, at #2.

A very solid 2. Taylor is in the 500-550K range and T-Pain is in the 175-190K range. (NOW is down at 160K-170K). So, even if the estimates are off, it’s likely he can hold the spot. No Idol has debuted higher than 2 since Season 2.

Jive was very smart in having so many different versions of the album. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll bet a lot of people bought multiple copies of the albums just to get all the songs.

Jive didn’t just invent this strategy. It’s been around for years. It’s not even a knew strategy for Idol CDs. And I’m betting that it will be used by Idols in the future too. I don’t care for the strategy (I just want one bonus CD as a treat for those paying attention), but I can see why they do it. Just like the state run lotteries being a volunteer tax, people are signing up to buy all the versions on their own. Plus, the retailers push for these exclusive deals in order to give the release more prominence (They don’t like other vendors getting the exclusive deals). I don’t feel one can legitimately discredit these numbers because it’s an industry standard practice these days.

  • jpfan

Thanks for HDD disclaimer. Makes sense that all those teens off from school would buy Taylor and Archie. I hope the numbers (or at least the #2 ranking) holds up though. The game the labels play with the different albums seems to be the industry standard now.

  • Aladdin88

Wow. Go David! Even if the prediction doesn’t hold up, I don’t imagine he’ll sell less than 200K. I would have been just fine with anything above 100K, so this is just icing on the cake. See, I just knew God didn’t pack all that raw talent into the little guy for nothing.

  • LK08

Ozark (from page 1)- I think people wouldn’t buy the $3.99 album from Amazon because they don’t know about it. Many people just buy from itunes. I sell things on amazon.com and I find it funny that there are often several listings for the same item and often people buy the more expensive one because they just don’t know how to look things up to see the different options.

BTW, a friend of our family’s recently showed us Taylor Swift’s music video for “Love Story” and it is absolutely romantic and well done. She is one beautiful young lady. You should check it out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXKAzgBMWxc

Jive didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t just invent this strategy. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s been around for years. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not even a knew strategy for Idol CDs.

    Kirsten,
I never said they did. I just said that Jive was smart to use this strategy, as is any other label, because it seems to get the public to buy different versions of the CDs. I was not discrediting the numbers, my gripe was with the strategy and how this strategy seems to take advantage of the buying public.

Sorry if my post came across differently. I didn’t mean for it to. :)

    From Ken Barnes:

David C.’s Light On is down a notch, 66-67, after selling 18,000, a drop of 7%, for a total of 226,000. The Time of My Life falls 112-125, selling 9,000, down 8%, for a total of 990,000, meaning a million is imminent in this case too.

Do you think TOML will hit platinum this coming week?

  • Kirsten

Do you think TOML will hit platinum this coming week?

Probably not. Maybe. It will be close. It certainly will the following week. We may have OSTAT, TOML and Crush all go platinum the same week which would be kind of neat.

  • RV65

“David C.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Light On is down a notch, 66-67, after selling 18,000, a drop of 7%, for a total of 226,000. The Time of My Life falls 112-125, selling 9,000, down 8%, for a total of 990,000, meaning a million is imminent in this case too.”

Wow…am still hoping that DC’s Light On sales will improve specially after the SNL appearance and the LO video………….it would be cool if Crush and TOML attain platinum status at the same time….GO DAVIDS!
