Are there any digital download numbers for the Season 7 Idols? Are they releasing those at all?

Wow. That’s a big jump for Jordin (and Chris).

  • Kirsten

Are there any digital download numbers for the Season 7 Idols? Are they releasing those at all?

It would appear that they are keeping those secret. Hopefully, they will release the numbers after the competition is over like last year. iTunes exclusives don’t always get reported (for instance Ken Barnes checked about Melinda’s “My Funny Valentine” and he was told that it would not be reported).

Whoa. Archuleta sure did resurrect that song.

Jeff Buckleyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Hallelujah is #4 on iTunes top songs! Amazing! It wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t even on the top 100 before.

    Unfreakin’ believable. Seriously.

I’ve been watching the iTunes charts for the last couple of years, and it’s rare to see a climb like that for a song that has been getting airplay in the Top 40 and then gets released for sale. Even rarer for a song that’s been out for decades and has already been played on every second Television series (including House, The West Wing, Without a Trace, The OC, Scrubs, Cold Case, Criminal Minds, ER, The Shield, Nip/Tuck, Crossing Jordan, LAX, Lost, Roswell, Ugly Betty, Third Watch, Falcon Beach, Dateline and and the movie Shrek).

The polling period of iTunes charts is longer than 24 hours so it typically takes a day or two for a hit song to appear in the top 20. Jason managed to help get a song in the top 5 in about 12 hours. Interesting.

    Ken Barnes:

    Jordin picks up her pace
Still the same four Idols occupying slots on the Billboard top 200 album chart, a situation not likely to change for a while. Daughtry’s tops, falling slightly from No. 18 to No. 20 thanks to an 8% sales drop to 23,000; his total is 3.84 million, according to Nielsen SoundScan, so he should be at 4 million in seven or eight weeks.

Carrie’s Carnival Ride rises 35-30, but falls 4% to 18,000 for a total of 1.89 million. Some Hearts is up 59-58, and rises 3% in sales to 13,000 (rounded), totaling 6.30 million.

Jordin returns to the top 50 (56-49) and gains 7% in sales to 15,000, bringing her total to 539,000.

    Off-chart Idols follow.

    Idols off the chart:

Kelly’s Breakaway sold 3,200, down from 3,500, total 5.96 million. My December held at 1,300 for a total of 754,000.

Kellie sold 2,500, down a bit from 2,600, for a total of 723,000.

Blake sold 2,000, down from 2,500 (let’s see if he gets a boost next week after his Idol appearance), for a total of 269,000.

Bucky held at 1,300, and totals 328,000.

Elliott held at 1,200, totaling 497,000. Getting close now.

Fantasia sold 600, down from 800, for 508,000 total.

Mandisa held at 600, total is 73,000.

Bo held at 500 for 41,000 total.

Clay held at 200 for 523,000.

Katharine dropped to 200 from 300; total 368,000.

The 100-sales club, all of whom sold the same approximate amount last week, consists of Taylor (701,000 total), Constantine (24,000 total), Paris (21,000 total) and Kimberley (18,000 total). Ruben is still below the quotable sales level and his total remains 237,000.

Those numbers for Hallelujah are amazing. Is Castro’s version for sale also? I think their numbers are secret or something.

  • beesims

I see that David A has the top rated album on iTunes for his performance of “Imagine”. How the hell does that get classified as an album?

Interesting that “Another Day in Paradise” didn’t see a bump on iTunes with all the David A. hysteria.

  • cheese

The boys songs from last night aren’t available yet.

It is incredible how quickly the Buckley version got to the top. Hell, I bought a version of Hallelujah this morning (Brandi Carlile) and I probably already have 5 or 6. I wonder if Jason’s version will do as well? Maybe he can knock David A off the #1 spot on the Albums chart.

I think Jason and David C will both sell a lot of downloads this week.

I was wondering why these 90 second songs are classified as “albums,” too. There are 20 Idol singles on the Top 100 albums right now.

  • Kirsten

I was wondering why these 90 second songs are classified as à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“albums,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ too. There are 20 Idol singles on the Top 100 albums right now.

It is very odd. There must be a reason for it. It may be because they normally report tracks, but not always exclusive albums? I don’t know. It’s kind of weird. Maybe it’s because if they call them albums they can’t chart on any BB chart (they are called albums so they can’t be singles, but they have too few songs to qualify for the album charts)

I was thinking when they first did it that they would add on to the album. So, you could either by 1 track for 99 cents or all three songs that so-and-so has sung for $1.99 (last year you got a bit of a deal if you bought the entire set of singles). You would think they would at least raft up all the songs from a performance night and let you buy it at a discount.

What’s further odd is that these “albums” weren’t charting on the albums charts at all until recently. People suspected that iTunes was somehow preventing the songs from going onto the sales charts. Now we even have our popularity bars back. Looks like AI has given up on keeping this secret. Maybe they’ll give us vote totals next…woo!

    This is article for Janet..

    http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003719609

Dislodging Jack Johnson from the top after a three-week reign, Janet Jackson’s “Discipline” bows at No. 1 on The Billboard 200. The Island Def Jam set moved 181,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen Soundscan, becoming the artist’s sixth chart-topper

  • cheese

I just re-freshed iTunes and all of the Idol albums went “poof.” I guess they really don’t want us to know. Heh.

  • jpfan

Janet Jackson’s total sales were 180K. Itunes probably sells 10-15% of that so her sales on Itunes were around 20K or so. So David A probably sold that many downloads. I’m not sure how many dls of Buckley’s song get you to #4 though. That’s within a given time period not total sales. It could have sold 40K or more. Those numbers will be released in a week and it’ll be interesting to see what they are.

  • ealbino

oh.. ok.. thanks for the info jpfan..I thought that would be too huge of an amount!

  • Kirsten

Then David must have sold over 181k..am I correct?

Sorry, but I don’t think so.

Janet sold 181K albums in total last week. That includes physical and digital albums (from all digital vendors, not just iTunes). Digital albums still don’t sell all that well because many people want the entire package if they are going to buy all the tracks. Digital albums account for only 10% of all albums sold last year. Last year, Maroon 5 set the record for the biggest 1 week sales numbers on iTunes at 101K (and that included 50K of pre-orders). That week, they sold 429,848 albums in total.

Plus, those are last week’s numbers (from Tuesday’s release date until Sunday). She’s predicted to have sales of 65K-70K this week (Monday morning to Sunda night). And we don’t know what the timing is for that iTunes chart. Is it for the last 7 days? 2 days? 4 days?

It’s just really hard to extract any info from that. There are just so many variables and few knowns (it would help if we had her digital album sales numbers).

Is Jeff Buckleyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Hallelujah charting higher than Lennonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Imagine did last week?

Yep. Lennon’s “Imagine” peaked at around 38 on Friday of last week (it was at 54 on Thursday, 103 on Wednesday).

Jeff Buckley’s “Grace” album is also seeing a surge.

Maybe this makes me a bad person because I really don’t have anything against Jordin, but…I was kind of hoping she wouldn’t outsell Taylor. I’m so sick of reading over and over again what a failure he is as the lowest-selling Idol winner, and I doubt that the media would be that harsh on Jordin if she were to assume the mantle. But she appears on-track to outsell Hicks in a few months, maybe sooner. Sigh. Good for her, but…
