Once again, Frozen is the top album of the week. Idol’s Candice Glover is set to debut just outside the top 10 and X-Factor’s One Direction remains steady in the top 25.

This is the weekly sales thread. Please post numbers as you find them. Thanks!

Now that the next cycle of The Voice is starting up, any news on last season’s winner?

I know that there was chatter at the time that they were going to try to promote The Voice winner in an Idol manner. They gave Tessanne an original single (previously, it was just whatever covers they sang on the finale) from a known hit maker (Ryan Tedder) and got her slots on the usual talk shows. But that seemed to go nowhere (because, as predicted, Tedder threw them something from his recycling bin).

  • Mateja Praznik

To be honest, I think Tessanne Chin will go the way of the first two winners of The Voice … nowhere. Cassadee and Danielle are country or at least pseudo country in Cassadee’s case. Scott Borchetta and the label worked hard to get radioplay for their two singles.

Tessanne isn’t country, so she won’t have Big Machine/Republic behind her. She has a good voice, but that’s not enough. Oh and that Ryan Tedder song was obviously a non starter.

So just because Tessanne isn’t country she’s gonna fail? that’s such a bad prediction for last seasons winner and she was the only contestant to top itunes last year twice and made the hot 100 with three of her perfomances and you’re still predicting she’s gonna fail? We haven’t even heard new music from her yet, so in my opinon it’s too early to make any predictions as to how things will turn out for Tessanne.

  • Mateja Praznik

I’m not saying that a contestant has to be country to succeed. But, Republic didn’t make much of an effort with the first two winners, but with Cassadee and Danielle Big Machine and Scott Borchetta came into the mix and a push to country format happened. I’m afraid Tessanne is stuck with Republic and I don’t see any special marketability in her that would convince the label to really make an effort. What’s her genre, really?

  • Adrian Sewell

Tessanne does have what it takes to make it. I’m not sue what kind of music she’ll release it could be a mix of different genres like pop,r&b or reggae could be anything. I thought she’d be signed with a different label not with Republic?

  • windmills

I think Mateja’s statement is more of a commentary on the machinery and infrastructure available to Tessanne than a commentary on Tessanne’s talent.

I think the audience for singing competitions these days is not really a CHR audience. It’s more of a HAC and country audience. These days, HAC acts (like Cassadee) are going to country radio. The country genre’s also the one that has the most infrastructure for new acts to get exposure – so many live festivals and tours that you can join as opening acts, labels that’ll set you up on radio tours that give you visibility and help you get radio exposure, a network of country-oriented blogs that cover everybody even tangentially-related to the country world and always cover reality show contestants, and so on. There’s probably no label better at exploiting this system than Big Machine Label Group, which partners with Republic Records for Voice contestants who market to country.

Tessanne can’t go country, obviously, that’s not who she is (not that this stopped Cassadee, but Tessanne wants to stay true to her musical roots). For Tessanne’s pop/reggae/R&B style, her marketing path is a lot murkier and major labels usually aren’t very creative when it comes to reality show alums who don’t have a very clear marketing path. The pop world doesn’t have anywhere near as good a new act infrastructure as country, so the odds are against Tessanne breaking out unless she lucks into a killer song that creates its own buzz.

It’s not impossible that Tessanne will succeed, and I actually hope she does. I actually liked her a lot last season, not only as a singer/performer but also as a person. I just think the odds are against her. She’s coming from a show whose core audience is not really the same as her target audience now. Her team’s going to have to do the work of identifying her target audience and creating opportunities to reach them. Republic hasn’t proven to be very good at that in the past.

  • Amy Beth

I could see Tessanne releasing her album in Jamaica first, where she is now a national hero.

Does UMG have a presence in the Caribbean that’s not Spanish language based?

  • girlygirl

It’s not that she can’t be successful, but look at the recent history of the winners coming off not just The Voice, but Idol and XFUSA. If you aren’t a country artist or folk-rock artist (like P2), the sales and radio play haven’t been there. There are no ex-reality show contestants making real progress as CHR artists (other than the ones who’ve been around for years, like Kelly & Daughtry, or the ones who came off the UK version of XF).

TBH, I don’t know what genre Tessane would fit into. I don’t see her as a pure pop artist. I don’t see her as an urban artist. It seems most likely she’ll go the HAC route, and that is one that is overcrowded with ex reality show contestants. Again, that doesn’t mean she can’t be successful, just that it’s going to be difficult. But that’s the case for pretty much any new artist these days.

Chart topping performance songs mean nothing. Javier (S1 Winner) had #1 song on iTunes and looked how he turned out

  • Cleopatra Jones

It is difficult for a woman to break in country music. See UMG did not pick up Kree Harrison. Danielle Bradbury’s album/set really did not go anywhere an Cassidee Pope is luke warm. We will see what happens to Tessanne, she may surprise everyone. Remember, just because you sing country music don’t mean you will make it.

Dismal numbers for Candice Glover http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/sales/salescht.cgi

I think these song shows are just entertainment now, no guarantee in instant sales, that era has been over. The artist has to work hard now to make it happen. And we see Interscope did little to help Glover.

  • Cleopatra Jones

Danielle’s album is out and it is a bust. I don’t know what you are talking about.

  • Mateja Praznik

But her debut single wasn’t a bust. Cassadee and Danielle didn’t sell much albums, but the label managed to push their debut singles up the country radio chart and the songs sold.

  • Jason Gorny

The last true winner of that era is P2.

“Candice Glover’s “Music Speaks” sold just 19K copies in its first week. That’s the lowest first-week sales tally for the debut album by an “American Idol” winner in the show’s 12-year history. The old record was set in 2010 when Lee DeWyze’s “Live It Up” sold 39K copies in its first week. “Music Speaks” enters The Billboard 200 at #14. That’s a bit higher than “Live It Up,” which debuted and peaked at #19.

“Idol’s” post-DeWyze revival with Scotty McCreery and Phillip Phillips, both of whose debut albums started strongly and sold well over time, appears to have stalled.

Here are the first-week sales tallies of the first post-coronation
albums by each of the “Idol” winners. They’re shown from the biggest
first week on down: Ruben Studdard’s “Soulful” (417K), Carrie Underwood’s “Some Hearts” (315K), Taylor Hicks’ “Taylor Hicks” (298K), Kelly Clarkson’s “Thankful” (297K), David Cook’s “David Cook” (280K), Fantasia’s “Free Yourself” (240K), Scotty McCreery’s “Clear As Day” (197K), Phillip Phillips’ “World From The Side Of The Moon” (169K), Jordin Sparks’ “Jordin Sparks” (119K), Kris Allen’s “Kris Allen” (80K), Lee DeWyze’s “Live It Up” (39K), Candice Glover’s “Music Speaks” (19K).”

YOUR NEW RELEASES: Hip-hop supplants snowbound fantasy on next week’s album chart, as Schoolboy Q is set to debut at #1. Romeo Santos, meanwhile, will score a career-best first week and the largest debut by a Latin artist since RBDdebuted in December 2006 with 94k. Santos’ previous release, Formula, Vol. 1, opened with 62k in November 2011. Here are this week’s key debuts:

    Schoolboy Q (TDE/Interscope) 150-160k
    Kid Cudi (Republic) 90-95k
Romeo Santos (Sony Music Latin) 90-95k
    Beck (Capitol) 65-70k
    Dierks Bentley (Capitol Nashville) 50-60k
    The Fray (Epic) 35-40k
    St. Vincent (Republic) 20-25k

We have to admit that we’re pretty preoccupied with what to wear on Oscar night. But we’re leaning toward sweatpants. (2/26p)

  • Madilo

Holding a bad record is so frustrating, i feel for Candice with all these comparisons.
I just hope her second week drop will not be too harsh.

  • Larc

According to a reliable poster at UKMIX, the exact 1st week sales of Candice’s Music Speaks is 18,636.
