Can ‘American Idol’ finally zoom ahead of ‘Amazing Race’?

At the Creative Arts Emmy ceremony last Sunday I caught up with Kynt and Vyxsin à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ “a couple of Goth kids from Louisville,” says Kynt à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ whose elimination episode of “Amazing Race” will decide that show’s fate this year. That’s the one that was judged by Emmy voters à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ and it’s a doozie full of thrilling action as five teams compete in Mumbai, India, to thread 108 flowers into a wedding garland, deliver propane gas tanks to residents and ride a rickshaw to a tailor shop.

However, “American Idol” submitted an excellent episode too: the two-hour season finale that not only includes the gripping suspense over which of the two Davids (Cook or Archuletta) will win, but their joint performance of Nickelback’s “Hero” and other socko musical turns by Donna Summer, ZZ Top, the Jonas Brothers and past “Idol” champ Carrie Underwood.

Carrie Underwood headlining at Wolstein Center Tuesday

It’s hard to believe that Carrie Underwood was enduring Simon Cowell’s barbs just four years ago. And if it’s hard for us to believe, it’s even harder for her. “You’re probably talking to a different person now,” said the 2004 “American Idol” winner in a call from Nashville to talk about her show Tuesday night at Cleveland State University’s Wolstein Center.

“It’s impossible not to change through everything that I’ve been through,” said Underwood, who was nominated for two 2008 Country Music Association Awards — album of the year for “Carnival Ride” and female vocalist of the year.

“Carrie Underwood” Scrubbed As Title

Plenty of artists name either their first or second album after themselves, but Carrie had an aversion to that approach. In fact, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s doubtful that sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll ever have a CD that is à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ as reviewers like to say à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ eponymous.

“I don’t like self-titling things,” she told The Cincinnati Enquirer. “I think that’s lazy. I mean, they know whose CD it is à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ the name’s right on it. There’s a line in one of the songs (“Wheel of the World”): ‘God put us here on this carnival ride/We close our eyes never knowing where it will take us next.’ That just sums up my life.”

New blog from David at DavidCookOfficial.com:

    SEPTEMBER 18, 2008, 3:40 AM

    Hey Guys,

I wanted to drop a note and answer a few emails that Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve been getting! I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t thank you guys enough for all the sign-ups and emails pertaining to the website. And thanks to everyone who came out on the tour. As you know, the AI tour has ended and although it was sad to sing together for the last time in Tulsa, we had a blast all summer…..

The new album is coming along great! I can say that, because Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m in the studio typing this, as we speak. Well as I speak. Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re reading. You guys are going to be the first to know the name of the first single AND what the album cover is going to look like. Make sure to sign up to get in on that if youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re interested in being the first to know.

I love the new site and hope you do too…ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just the beginning and weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re still working out some kinks here and there. I know a few people had some password issues and thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s all been fixed we think. The web nerds (get it?) helping me out apologize for the inconvenience. So much more coming for the site too….like a points system, listening parties, maybe even a few other secret things that Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be able to talk about soon.

I also wanted to grab a few emails and respond to them because I really appreciate you emailing me. I do read email, but obviously canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t respond to all of them…so Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll pick out a few to blog about from time to time. Below are this weekà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s picks!

    Again thanks guys!

I was wondering who the heck Kynt and Vyxsin were. I saw them on Archie’s myspace and thought they didn’t seem the ArchAngel type. *giggle*

Loved the mention of the Hero duet in the LA times article. That was so pretty! I’m wondering if they will perform that together for Ford day. I imagine finding time to practice it would be an issue though.

Nice to hear from Cook again! It’s getting exciting!

  • sma11ie

How cool, now we know which episode AI submitted for the Emmy’s! I really hope AI gets it this year, and as a big fan of this season, and especially of David Cook, I am extremely happy they submitted the finale, which had for me, hands-down, the best reality TV moment I’ve ever seen (Cook’s emotional win). And wouldn’t it be a great cap to an amazing AI experience for DC, to add to his list of AI firsts, helping the show finally break that Susan Lucci curse?!

But objectively, I wonder if the 2-hour length will help or hurt its prospects. As the latimes point out, will Emmy voters turn off the screener when they get to the horrible Love Guru bit? Hope not, cuz they’d be missing out on some great TV…

  • poporange

IMO Amazing Race is a much harder show to produce because it fallows each contestant to different countries and has them do different tasks. AI only has one venue and mostly is singing with kind of bad zingers.America Idol hs a good chance of winning probably Amazing Race run of emmys is over.(fyi -reality shows are cheap to produce)

Kelly P-Not the greatest vocally and would not say “she is as dumb as a rock” the girl is quite inteligent. I must admit she is fun to watch.

Fire-ant -I am hestitant about David C vocally prefer CD just my taste. Daivd A is vocally one the best male singers on AI but has no edge.Thier both become big stars and sell music.

I wouldn’t consider it a low point in Emmy awards. I think a lot of work goes into making AI look like not such a big deal. It would be nice if they won, although I don’t think it’s very likely that they will. But…I could be wrong.

  • Trina

I wonder if David has any clue how is mailbox will explode now that people know he actually does read all his mail LOL Love his blog and love his answers to the questions. I like the site and I like how it seems he’s going to be an active part of it, but the message board I cannot deal with. The format and reading everything upside down gives me a headache.

That guy that wrote that Emmy article, is his track record good on his guesses? Does he say AI has a good shot every year? Because if AI finally does win, with the help of that episode that would just be too cool. Hey his emotional homecoming visit got them an Emmy I’m hoping his winning moment can give it a bigger push.

  • Kirsten

How cool, now we know which episode AI submitted for the Emmyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s! I really hope AI gets it this year, and as a big fan of this season, and especially of David Cook, I am extremely happy they submitted the finale, which had for me, hands-down, the best reality TV moment Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve ever seen (Cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s emotional win). And wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t it be a great cap to an amazing AI experience for DC, to add to his list of AI firsts, helping the show finally break that Susan Lucci curse?!

Actually, they broke their Susan Lucci curse last year when they won a Technical Emmy. So they are not Emmyless anymore. They were also given a special Emmy for Idol Gives Back (and won another one last week)

I don’t think that it’s a great idea to have sent in the Finale. There was a lot of product placements in there and not a lot of information about who the Idols were. If I’m Joe Schmoe Voter who never watched the show, why am I going to care if one David or another David won? Am I going to care enough to watch 2 hours of filler, bad product placements and a couple of questionable numbers? At least Clive didn’t show up to do his usual buzzkill of an overlong, overboring speech.

This year, Lost was really smart. They brought in a bunch of people to watch the 3 episodes they were considering submitting. Lost is a show steeped in mythology and that doesn’t help it with the Emmy voters. So, they brought in non-watchers and asked them which episode they liked the best. Interestingly enough, they liked one of the ones they thought was a long shot because they thought you needed to have a lot of backstory for it. Fortunately, it was also a fan favourite (“The Constant”). It worked for the non-viewers because it mainly concentrated on one set of characters. So, the producers were smart to consult outsiders. I think Idol should do the same.

But, who knows, they might win it this year. I think it will be tough for them. The older a show gets, it typically gets harder to win an Emmy without a big change (if I didn’t give it to you last year, why should I give it to you this year? What’s new?). It looks like a variety show which have been on the air for YEARS so nothing new there. It’s production values went down this year (that new director sucks) and sound was a constant issue. Putting the band in the rafters was moronic (I think the episode where the band was on stage made that episode MUCH better) and the less said about the swaybots the better. And the ratings are down. Plus all the controversey. But who knows? Voters might be ready for a new winner.

  • FolkFan

I suspect that DC knows that he’ll have plenty of emails from which to select the next set for Q&A.

They did choose a good episode. However, forget the Love Guru thing (which, really, I wish that I could forget), the finale ran 9 minutes over time, cutting off the actual announcement of the winner (namely, the purpose of the whole show) for many DVR viewers. I mean, if the goal was to have viewers’ DVRs cut off literally just after the shared first name “David” was spoken, then, well, Bravo. If voters know about that, I’d tend to think that it would lead to AI losing some votes.

  • sma11ie

The older a show gets, it typically gets harder to win an Emmy without a big change

The rational part of me agrees with you, Kirsten, and all your points about the areas where the show lacked horribly(swaybots, no!), but like you’ve mentioned before (I think?), stranger things have happened, so who knows? That’s really awesome insight on what they did for Lost– so smart! Cuz I also agree with you about the finale lacking in backstory– the only part that showed a glimpse of the Davids outside of their performances (besides the winning moment) was unfortunately linked to that horrendous plug for the Love Guru. As much as I loathed that segment, I was grudgingly grateful to it for the cute moment where DC bursts into laughter at Archie. Of course, no clue what non-regular viewers think of that, since they don’t have too much context of those guys’ regular personalities.

Finally, not a fan of Pickler’s music, but the times I’ve seen her in interviews, and that one time she did a red carpet segment for Leno, I’ve found her extremely funny and entertaining. I’m not saying she’s a Rhodes Scholar by any means, but I suspect she’s cleverer than most think. She definitely plays up the goofy blonde thing, and has great comedic timing. Should be interesting to see her co-host with Ryan. I think it’s unnecessary to call her “dumb as rocks”, although I’d suspect that given she likes to play up her cluelessness as part of her charm, she probably doesn’t care as much as Jason Castro would.

  • IGetCranked

Kirsten, why do you always have to make so much darn sense? You make it hard on silly rainbow loving people like me! :P

    I agree with you 100%.

  • spritely

This is going to sound like a facetious comment, but actually I mean it–the voting may come down to the number of AI-watching, David Cook fans in the Emmmy membership. ‘Cause among DC fans, that ep is usually described as one of the most emotionally satisfying moments of television ever, Love Guru notwithstanding. If I were an Emmy voter, I wouldn’t be able to NOT vote for it, because it’s so rare for a television show–and especially a reality show–to pack such a punch. I suspect it’s that same emotional punch that won AI the Emmy for the Cook Homecoming ep.

Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s really awesome insight on what they did for Lostà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ so smart!

It was very smart of them. They are still considered a long shot to win this year, but they consider it a win just to get nominated. They didn’t get nominated for “Outstanding Drama Series” in 2006 or 2007 after winning in 2005 and it didn’t look promising for them this year (lots of competition and people who don’t watch the show have trouble getting into it). From the leaks during the screenings, judges were saying that a lot of people who did not even consider Lost as a possibility going in were so impressed with the submitted episode, that they ranked it very highly (in order to try to increase the quality of nominations in some categories, they take the top 10 or so vote getters and have a judging panel view every single one of the submission tapes in the category and vote to come up with the final set of 5 nominations). I just thought it was an interesting insight into how very important Emmy submission tapes are (and word has it that The Amazing Race producers are very good at selecting Emmy submission tapes).

I suspect ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s that same emotional punch that won AI the Emmy for the Cook Homecoming ep.

I suppose that it is possible that David Cook fans in the Emmy voter pool voted for that clip just because it featured Cook, but I like to think that Emmy voters in general voted for it because it demonstrated the highest quality of editing (i.e. it actually earned it).

I think it’s also difficult to extrapolate from one category to another. Most of the technical Emmy’s have voting limitations on them. They have peers voting for each other. To a certain extent, a make-up artist is going to have a better understanding of who did a better make-up job than perhaps a writer might. So, it’s likely the editing award was limited to voting amongst people who edit TV shows for a living. Meanwhile, categories like Best Reality Show will be drawing from the general Emmy voting audience. TAR has consistently won this category despite having lower ratings than Survivor and AI because it submits good tapes. I don’t believe that they have ever submitted a Finale episode so they weren’t getting votes for having a good winner. The euphoria of your favourite winning only goes so far. I hope that most of the voters take the voting seriously. They are voting for quality of the show, not how happy the results made them. Of course, people vote for a variety of reasons (and some just let their assistants vote for them) and there is nothing to say that the majority of Emmy voters won’t think that AI had the highest quality this year amongst the options (i.e. I’m not saying it isn’t going to win).

I suspect that DC knows that heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll have plenty of emails from which to select the next set for Q&A.

And from which he can use to get restraining orders in place. I kid. Seriously, there are some strange people out there. Man, some of those “letters to Taylor” on Gray’s site were pretty scary (while most of them were just trite and boring). Of course, none of Cook’s fans “are anything like Taylor fans” so I’m sure he’s safe. **cough***

  • cheese

Am I going to care enough to watch 2 hours of filler, bad product placements and a couple of questionable numbers?

Yeah, don’t forget the horrendous opening group number with the dreaded white suits and all of the Amanda Overmeyer choreography sprinkled throughout the show. I love Idol, but nothing about it exactly screams “Emmy!” except for maybe some technical stuff, and Ryan. Still, they can’t even get the sound mix right for the singers half the time. (I don’t watch any other reality shows, so maybe it is good by comparison?).

Oh well, at least we’ll get new pics of the Davids at the ET Emmy Party this weekend. (I wonder if either one will every bring a date anywhere, lol). I’m thinking that Archie won’t be able to resist jumping on stage with Billy Idol.

TAR does do a great job of selecting its submission episodes. The Goths episode was great. It had everything that you could want in a TAR episode (except that the team that was likable got beat out by jerks). But even that was exciting.

It’s hard to say what episode would be the best episode for AI to submit. The only possible elimination episode would, to me, be the finale. Maybe one of the Hollywood episodes? Actually, now that I think of it, Top 8 guys could have been a good one. All in all, good singing. A couple that were either trainwrecks or amusing. Coherent judging. Random Lionel Richie story from Simon. Maybe (and it shocks me to say this), either Top 7/Mariah Carey or Top 6/ALW. Again, some really good performances on each. Some ups and downs. The mentors were surprisingly enjoyable. The judges largely made sense. Top 7 you had Cookie tears. Top 6, you had Rickey Minor hamming it up on stage. Small enough number of contestants in each of those three episodes to make it easy to follow for a newbie.

In the end, I watch AI for the performances, for the ups and the downs, and the hope that you’ll see something special. So maybe selecting the right performance show would be the way to go.

  • Keel

Well, for all the dings against the AI finale (which I thought was highly entertaining (and satisfying because I’m a Cook fan)), the Emmy winners will know enough to cut it some slack for some minor technical snafus because, unlike TAR, the AI finale is broadcast live so there are going to be some minor issues here and there and it won’t be perfectly edited, but at the end, the question should be, whether it was well produced and the audience was entertained. In my book, the answer is yes but I can’t compare it to TAR because I never saw that episode.

Also? Too bad the Guitar Hero commercials couldn’t be part of the AI submission — because those two commercials just added so much to my enjoyment of the finale. I just remember going: “Wait, why are they doing a Risky Business commercial in the middle of . . . what? holy sh*t, is that Cook? ahahahahaha! awesome! wait, what about Archie?? that’s not fair, they’ve got to do a commercial for him too.”

Yeah. Last year was really great. Christian was “fierce”! LOL

Love when the contestants make entire outfits out of grocery store items or things they find in a trash bin!

ITA on the Project Runway love.

Actually, my roomy and I kinda watch Idol as PR, all we talk about while watching the show is like, “The dress is pretty”(well guess this was for Syesha”, “Leather pants on Archuleta, really?”, “That guitarist’s shirt is great”, “Ryan’s hair is getting worse and worse.”

I’ve recently found out, as I never watched ANTM before, AI does a much better job at makeover than that “modeling show”.

Wow, who put that Ford Day Web page together? They could have used a more current pic of DC. And more flattering text.

  • Layla

No one can beat the fierce Christian but this season isn’t too bad. I’m really enjoying some of the challenges.

I think a better episode for AI to submit might’ve been the Top 3 results show. This episode probably gives a better picture of what Idol really is – the suspense, the eliminations, the attachments people develop to thier fave contestants (as shown in the hometown segments), the emotional journey of each contestant (as shown in their AI journey segments). The finale is basically a bunch of random performances and lame skits, with 10 minutes of awesome at the end.

  • cruzceleste

I agree Top Three was a great episode…The finale was great… even with all the boxing theme I think it was good, and the two Davids cry… pretty cool..

David Cook will be performing for the Good Morning America Fall Concert Series

With David Archuleta’s first single, “Crush,” making a huge splash by debuting at #2 on the Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, it’s no wonder that the “Archies” have been chomping at the bit for news of the debut album. It has now been confirmed that David’s self-titled CD will be released by 19 Recordings/Jive Records on November 11, one week before AI winner David Cook. Both albums have been named as EW’s “20 Fall Albums We Can’t Wait to Hear.”

Re the Finale episode submitted to the Emmy’s, three things that stood out to me, which I think made pretty good reality tv, were: (1) Ryan’s impromptu dance, (2) Simon’s unexpected apology, and (3) DC refusing to hog the spotlight when he was declared the winner, giving props to Archie, sharing his moment with Andrew and the other finalists, and taking them with him when he left the big stage to get closer to the audience as he finished off the coronation song. That entire last sequence, was truly mesmerizing. I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen for anything! Even now, I remember it all like it was yesterday. : )

Well, not surprisingly, as a DA fan, that last sequence is not something I really care to remember or watch again (although the moment DC won has been played so many times I’ve become immune to it at this point). I’m over it, don’t worry. But yeah, the finale was great for me up until that moment. Really, though, I would never watch any of it over again simply because I know now what was coming and it seems to have tainted everything that came before. It’s all a matter of perspective. Somebody who hasn’t watched the show (an Emmy voter perhaps), won’t feel the same thrill that DC fans felt, nor the same huge disappointment that DA fans felt. They’ll just see streamers, lots of guest performances, not a whole lot about the contestants, and lots of clapping. I’m not surprised they submitted the finale episode, I’m just not sure it was the right one to submit. As somebody said, the top 3 elimination night focused a lot more on the contestants and, really, the whole point of the show (why each contestant wanted this; what it meant to them). Even the finale performance show would have been better–that was an outstanding episode.

Agree, I wasn ´t an AI follower until this season, and even being really interest in the final result, there were some part in the finale thay I was really turn off… Donna Summer, George Michael song was like 10 minutes long (or I was pretty boried by this moment)… Amanda Overmayer “dancing” …

Another good episode Top Four with Jason ´s “I was thinking Bob Marley” was pretty amazing IMO, or Brooke elimination ´s, or Top six week with the Star and Stop act of Brooke, that was some good reality Tv… I think even the episode about Hollywood week were more interesting, with Josiah crying all over the place…

It has now been confirmed that Davidà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s self-titled CD will be released by 19 Recordings/Jive Records on November 11,

As a David Archuleta ´s fan it ´s makeme happy that he is getting a lot of noise but also it ´s make me so much nervous about his sells, I really hope that JIVE expectation won ´t be unrealistic, and he gets lots of support and patient like any other new artist… well best of luck to both Davids…

Saw that, like Kara and Randy, I think Paula is taking something because she sounded normal… and my dear Simon is an :foot_in_mouth_tb: like always when some one ask about Archie…

  • IGetCranked

Just when I thought Simon was going to be pleasant, he had to act like a jerk. That ending was just rude. I thought last year was one of “The great finales”? and a few weeks ago, Archie was a “genuine pop singer “.

He’s still my favorite judge. I just don’t want to see or hear his interviews!

  • abbysee

Some days my friend sexy Simon leaves the script at home. This day was no exception. Paula however show why she is really effective at times. She really has great insight, I mean some days she’s a big bag of crazy, but I still trust her more than Simon. Randy looked good, and I see his bromance with David A continues. At least he’s consistant. LOL, holla at ya boy!

  • cheese

I think what Simon means by boring is “there weren’t enough female contestants flirting with me.” I think that’s what passes for “personality” in Simon’s world. I don’t think he said anything that bad about David A – you can’t really predict superstardom or longevity in the industry based on one song, or even on one album. Simon is really not one to gush.

  • jpfan

I love Simon. He always keeps it interesting. They’re looking for a contestant with the personality of Fantasia????!!!! Who could see that coming? Plus, I agree with him about the S7 contestants. They were boring for the most part and except for the two Davids, I don’t see them making much or a stir. Archie off the show is pretty funny in an odd way. Yes, I think Cook will have his charisma issues. I guess it’s just me and Simon who think that though, :)

  • cruzceleste

Yeah agree he didn ´t said anything bad… but considering he was at his hometown… he could have said that he was good, and wish him luck, whatever… and them made those comments about singles and album… :tongue2_tb:

Just sometimes I get the vibe that he really was annoyed by Archie… :ponder_tb:

He did said that he missed Sanyaya :blink_tb:

  • IGetCranked

Simon’s point about Archie was completely valid. That’s not where my problem lies, it’s the fact that he does a complete 160 constantly. A few weeks ago, Archie was praised for his song and being a “genuine pop star”. The whole cocky way he talked about the contestants being boring is what really got me. Was that their fault Simon? Oh and listen up Emmy voters, Simon says the show was boring so no need to vote for it or anything even though he praised it for being one of The Great Finales earlier on. I could find many examples of his flip flopping but I’ll shad ap about it. Anywhoo, the reason that I like Simon as a judge IS because he is opinionated and to the point but how can I believe him anymore when tomorrow it’s a different story?

*whew* That rant was better than my morning tea. :)

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Simon is really not one to gush.

Oh so true. Unless it’s Leona Lewis.

ETA: I plan to spend the rest of the day trying to figure out what Paula’s wearing. Let’s start there.

  • jpfan

In Simon’s world, S7 was boring because the ratings were down significantly. I think he’s bored by all of them except the divas like Leona Lewis. And he didn’t really say anything that bad about Archie, just hedging his bets. He’s Mr. Nasty not Mr. Nice so being in Archie’s hometown doesn’t matter at all.

  • Sarah

Wasn’t it Fantasia’s performance this past season that generated a look of illness on Simon’s face?

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

I think he was referring to the Season 3 Fantasia.

Outside of KLC calling Simon a “butt”, this group might have been a little too “good-two-shoes” for Simon Cowell.

  • IGetCranked

    Outside of KLC calling Simon a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“buttà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ , this group might have been a little too à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“good-two-shoesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ for Simon Cowell.

But again, here lies the problem. Chikezie showed spunk to him and he got mad. Cook tried some banter and personality and Simon got an aggravated look and later on said he was arrogant. Simon himself makes it so that they are afraid to show anything else. Now they can show it in other ways.. Brooke was an emotional mess which I think harmed her. Then there was Jason who I thought was hilarious but all that did was make Simon say that he didn’t think Jason was taking the contest seriously. Then you have someone who has TONS of personality in Taylor from a few year ago and Simon critizied that too. What does the man want?

  • http://myspace.com/susanatfox sumidol

Idol 7 boring?!!! The LEAST boring of the bunch was Jason Castro. If not for Jason the ratings wouldnt have gone up as they had by the sheer tenacity of his fans keeping him on and Jason’s goofiness and charisma. “I was thinking Marley” Oh please Simon – add the Davids and MJ – shoot all of them at ONE time or another but boring?!! NO way – way to get an Emmy or new viewers for this next season – Simon you moron

  • elisad

    Oh, the man wants drama.

  • ptslittlecomment

Everybody (with the possible exceptions of Joshua (?), Amanda and Danny) seemed to just go with the flow this season and the top 10 at least seemed to really get along and support each other. I think that is what irritated Simon. Didn’t one point in the season he tell someone – maybe DC – that not everyone was your friend even though you think they are? It sounded like he was trying to stir something up then. Just like Paula says he is doing now with the judges.
Nigel also said the contestants from S7 has no personality. But bloggers continually post that they identified with these 10 more than in past years. Maybe Simon and Nigel were looking for high drama and couldn’t see the human interest stories developing in front of their eyes.

And another thought – Simon like folks to talk back to him. Yes, they usually get voted off soon after if they do, but I think in Simon’s mind he thinks it proves how smart and in control he is. Either they see things his way or they are out of there!

If DC, Archie or any of ther others from S7 have a good career, Simon will sing another tune.

  • Sarah

I think he was referring to the Season 3 Fantasia.

I didn’t watch AI really until this year, so I’m guessing that Fantasia’s stage persona of several years ago didn’t really resemble what she projected when she was a guest this year?

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

    What does the man want?

Who knows? Can America be trusted to know that it’s not about what Simon wants or likes and actually vote for the person most deserving, regardless of if they talk back or show a little personality? Are we really that much under his thumb? Or, did the David Cook win (after the Simon-slam) show a shift in the thought process of the AI-voting public?

  • IGetCranked

    Good point Gwendolyn!

Randy’s fawning over Archie on the show and afterwards was creepy. It was uncomfortable to watch at times. I think that Archie needs to stay far, far away from Randy, forever.
