David Cook has an ‘American Idol’ flashback at the AMAs

It wasn’t the first time that David Cook had been back to L.A.’s Nokia Theatre since he won season 7 of American Idol there last spring. But performing at the American Music Awards pre-show on Sunday still brought out the jitters. “I actually get panic attacks whenever I’m in a five-mile radius of this place,” he told EW.com following his two-song set in the courtyard, a stone’s throw away from the Idol finale showdown stage. “It’s home to one of the most nerve-wracking moments in my life.”

Archuleta, for one, said he’s content with his album’s performance. “I’m quite comfortable with second place,” he quipped. “Right behind Taylor Swift is not a bad place to be.”

JC Chasez on Working With David Archuleta

Hollyscoop caught up with JC Chasez on the red carpet to get the scoop on his cameo with David Archuleta.

What can we expect from the album? JC said, “I did the last song that was on his record. We did it very last minute, but I think the song is good. Working with him is amazing. He has such a strong feeling about who he is as an artist. I did background vocals on the song I did with him.”

David Cook – David Cook Bland anthems and ballads galore.

There is no question that Cook has a solid set of pipes but what he does with them is utterly bland. The bombastic ready for Top 40 prime-time production doesn’t add to the mix much, either. Producer Rob Cavello–a longtime Hollywood studio whiz who has a penchant for taking band and turning them into popular hit machines (he helmed Green Day’s Dookie, My Chemical Romance’s The Black Parade, and has worked with The Goo Goo Dolls, amongst others)à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ has instilled Cook’s 11 song opus with enough slickness to make it bona fide pop radio fodder without any questions or hesitations. Songs bleed into one another with little or no distinction between them, Cook often belting out the lyrics as if he were crooning on overdrive.

Jonas Brothers Wanna Make Music With Kanye

And speaking of collaborations, American Idol winner, David Cook, says Sarah McLachlan is on the top of his list. “I’m a huge fan of hers,” Cook said on the red carpet before the show. “I think we could do something very cool.”

He continued, “I think she’s here tonight. Maybe I’ll have to give her an elbow nudge or something.”

No word if he ever got a nudge in.

‘American Idol’ Daily: Idol Nation invades the American Music Awards

The steady takeover of the music industry by “American Idol” was on full display Sunday night at the American Music Awards. “Idol” alums may not have taken home every last trophy, but Idol Nation has become the largest caucus to be reckoned with in any music conclave. Out on the red carpet was David Cook entertaining the fans, and presenter David Archuleta worked the rope line. Inside Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry and Jordin Sparks all awaited their respective envelopes, with Carrie taking home the Favorite Country Album prize, and Daughtry sweeping up the Favorite Pop/Rock Group. (Our colleague Stephanie Lysaght thought David A. was shortchanged on his rightful stage time.)

The X Factor and Leonard Cohen? Hallelujah!

It’s great news that this year’s X Factor winner will release a version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. It’s perfect for Diana, the best remaining contestant in this year’s series, and as well as being a tremendous tune it’ll make perfect sense as a Christmas number one, particularly with a ridiculous, glossy production and some choirs a-wailin’ for the big final chorus. Simple.

Except it’s not really that simple, unfortunately, because already people are banging on about the whole thing being deeply inappropriate, lacking in respect (at least one of the people who has sung this song in the past is dead. It’s very sad) and just, like, totally cheap and commercial, man.

‘Dancing With the Stars’: The Final Countdown

It’s finals week, starring Brooke Burke, Lance Bass, Warren Sapp, and my favorite singer lady with the larger-than-ever jewels on her forehead! I love finals week for two main reasons. (1) The season’s almost over. You know I love me some fringe, and I currently sleep on a pillow of old fringed leotards I sewed myself, but enough is enough! I’m officially on DWTS overload. Hey, I’m allowed. At least it’s not week 2. Speaking of 2, (2) finals week marks the semi-annual return of giant disco balls as key props and graphics! I was basking in ‘em, from the rotating mirror-ball graphic featuring the three finalists’ noggins, to the extreme close-ups of the mirror-ball ”sculptures” flanking the judges’ table, to the big-screen images of balls the size of four entire Tom Bergerons displayed behind the real Tom Bergeron as he spoke! In the absence of a finalist I truly care about, this is the crap that makes DWTS most lovable.

Warren Sapp, a voteworthy dancer

I admit it.

If I was a “Dancing With The Stars” voter (and I’m not, really), Warren Sapp just might get my ballot. In Monday’s throwdown freestyle dance, when the final three couples could go crazy with jumps and lifts and were generally charged with dazzling the audience and the three dance judges, Sapp and his Aussie partner Kym Johnson threw themselves into a snappy series of hops, skips, jumps, throws, leaps, tippy-toe spins and had a generally good time.

In football talk Sapp played until the final buzzer.

That was a pretty nice shot at the end there, wasn’t it? Haha. Big improvement from what we saw in the behind the scenes clip of the Ford video at the beginning of the season, where the Idols were street kids playing basketball and DC had that unfortunate sweatband look. I just remember, he made some really dorky comment about how he used to play in HS, and how he’s gonna show off his skillz, and show his old coaches what they’re missing out or something. From Hits Daily Double:

LETà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢S GET PHYSICAL: The simultaneous release of Guns Nà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Rosesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Chinese Democracy at Best Buy and on iTunes last Sunday has caused havoc with the usual SoundScan reporting system (see related items below). In order not to separate out the albumà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“first-weekà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ sales into two separate charts, and under considerable muscle from GNRà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s label IGA, SoundScan has agreed to à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“hold the digital sales of any album which has a physical counterpart in order to accommodate first-week charting.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Any digital sales accrued during a period that doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t match the initial reporting week of a physical release will be carried over to the tracking period of that release. GnR won’t, but Kanye, Ludacris, the Killers and other new releases will. There were a ton of albums that came out yesterday (this week everything came out a day early), so everything older gets pushed down in the rankings.

    do not mess with sports..

These little clips are more amusing to see than, OMG so impressive! LOL. Besides, a clip of DC shooting a few baskets hardly qualifies as “sport” to me. Also, I brought up the Ford video where DC brought up his HS coaches as evidence of his dorkiness, not his b-ball prowess. If you saw the clip, you’d understand, BF was goofing off and being a self-deprecating idiot, not claiming to be Steve Nash, haha.

But, that said, I’d LOVE to see DC play a celebrity baseball charity game. That’d be hot. Definitely not trying to compare him to anywhere nearing pro material, but he seems like he’d do pretty well for a celebrity, which is really the only fair comparison.

  • Kirsten

In other words, SoundScan will do what they damn well please.

Grrr. Me like rules. Me no like SoundScan re-writing the rules on an ad-hoc basis.

I grumbled mightily last year when BB/SS retroactively change the rules for The Eagles (before then, albums released to a single vendor were not eligible to chart on the main charts). I wouldn’t have minded so much if they changed it the week before, but the week after?

If crazy Axl Rose wants to release his album on a Sunday, he should have to deal with his first week numbers being split in two. If you want the first days numbers to be included to pump up your first week totals, release on a Monday (like Kanye did yesterday).

BTW, from the first day estimates, if they had included GnR’s Sunday sales in this week, it doesn’t look like they moved enough units to challenge Cookie, but they would have passed Archie by.

I’m also annoyed at the Grammy’s for letting Beyonce be elligible this year when her songs were not released by September 30th. I do not like one set of rules for the “Big Guys” and another set for everybody else.

I’m so confused. Are they only carrying over digital sales from Sunday, or the physical ones from Best Buy as well?

Also, it looks like not just Kanye, but The Killers, and a bunch of the other new releases came out a day early this Monday to take advantage of the Thanksgiving week, which makes sense… my question is this: why don’t all new releases come out Mondays to include that extra day, since sales are tracked Monday-Sunday?

  • FolkFan

As I understand it, the week moved to Tuesday to avoid shipping problems that can occur for something that is supposed to be available starting on Mondays. They didn’t want situations where people showed up at stores on Monday, looking for a CD, and it wasn’t there.

283,446. Nice. Is that more or less than Taylor Hicks sold his first week?

Just looked it up. Less by about 15K, more or less.

Considering how the market has gone, when you account for that, David will have the 3rd best debut. I couldn’t be happier for him. What a great accomplishment!

  • Michelle

Well, goodness knows none of the other winners have lived up to Ruben’s storied career after that debut week. (sorry Ruben fans)

  • smartcookie

Just behind Kelly and just ahead of Fantasia is not at all a bad place to be, especially considering how terrible record sales have been and how much they’re down. What is it, 24% over this time last year and 30-some% over this week in 2006? That’s huge.

  • FolkFan

Nice to see DC holding his own on that list, especially given the downturn in the music market.

  • leome

    Just a sweet little thing
From Pop culture nerd (includes a Cook picture)

8:11 p.m. The show is finished and David Archuleta makes his way through the crowd. He goes backstage and spies David Cook. They hug.

5:02 p.m. Outside the greenroom, a production assistant misidentifies Chris Daughtry as Dave Cook. Luckily, this happens out of Daughtryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s earshot. UPS!

  • Michelle

    Nice behind-the-scenes article, leome.

    Oooooops! :D

According to AllAccess, Light On was added by WHTZ (Z100). Woohoo. That is huge! Pretty good for the Little Boat Anchor that could.

According to AllAccess, Light On was added by WHTZ (Z100). Woohoo. That is huge!

And in other news, Obama was elected president! (j/k…pssst…it was huge news yesterday).

Pretty good for the Little Boat Anchor that could.

I cannot be shamed on this subject.

Roadrunnerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Nickelback ride the Dark Horse to #2, with 320k, followed by 19/RCA/RMG American Idol winner David Cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s self-titled debut at #3 and Columbiaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s natty crooners Il Divo, who show Promise with a #5 bow and 154k, giving label chief Steve Barnett and his gang two of this weekà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Top 5 and three in the Top 10

According to HDD, David will debut at #3.

  • FolkFan

Possibly bigger news is that, according to a DCO’er, Z100 has spun LO four times today. Not a bad start….

That Pop Culture Nerd blog was cute.

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

Here are the LO adds from All Access:

    WHTZ-FM New York (#1)
    WKSS-FM Hartford (#50)
    WAEZ-FM Johnson City (#101)
    WVSR-FM Charleston, WV (#183)

  • May

Congratulations to Cook ! 283,446 is awesome! As for the Z100 add..I guess I’m a little late to the party because that’s news to me too! I’m kind of surprised they added him. I remember one of the managers or DJs on Z100 making a comment a few weeks ago about Light On not being the kind of music suited to their station (can’t remember the article though). One more station cookified. :cool2_tb:

And speaking of collaborations, American Idol winner, David Cook, says Sarah McLachlan is on the top of his list. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m a huge fan of hers,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Cook said on the red carpet before the show. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I think we could do something very cool.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

LOL, Cookie is certainly not shy about what he wants. I’ve been hoping for a Brandi Carlisle/Cook duet but I think Sarah M would be even more amazing. He really shouldn’t tease us about those things.

  • Jocelin

The music industry is in such sad shape. Someone told me that the top 10 last year this week were much higher collectively. I think he said they were all over 90-100k. I think it’s a fairly easy calculation to make that the Davids’ cds would have put DA at 220k and DC at 340k in a more genial time.

I thought Cook would come out about 260k and that HDD overprojected by 20k like they did last week. I am surprised by how on target their revised projections were this time around.

^^ Yeah, DA was #1 for a couple of weeks. I assume they switched them to coincide with Cook’s album release.

  • soundscene

E! News did an exclusive interview of Archie on the set of his AOL sessions. They also showed clips of his performance. So apparently they do exist and will probably pop up soon. Jive is probably timing its release to coincide with the radio adds of the second single.

Thank goodness he sang the new single (ALTNOY) even though it wasn’t going to be the second single at the time it was filmed.

Billboard print article about DA’s debut (a scan).

Apparently, he has 1.4 million total digital sales. What that is comprised of, they don’t say. About 1 million is for Crush. Is the other 400K for the final week of Idol downloads? (The ones that were allowed to chart). Or is it international sales of Crush?

The article also talks a little about Jive’s future strategy and getting him on a “proper” tour in 2009. Very positive article. Nice that Jive acknowledges that he’s gotten past just his Idol fanbase now–and I really think he has. I think his second week sales pretty much proved that first week sales weren’t Idol first-week frontloaded sales.

  • Jabkmc

    Thanks Lisa! Great article.

    Sorta on topic…

Apparently I have to purchase two more Archie CDs and one more Cookie CD. I requested and received Christmas lists from three of my six nieces and nephews (haven’t heard from the other three yet). Oddly, the 16 year old nephew and 14 year old niece want Archie CDs. The 12 year old niece wants Cookie’s. LOL.

  • CathyMK

David Cook was just on Jimmy Kimmel. He was filmed on the Red Carpet at the AMAs. He sang Jingle Bells with Guillermo. (Sorry, no clue how to spell Guillermo!) He played a ukelele!

My daughter is in heaven- the Jonas Brothers and DC on the same show again! (And, yes, we’re night owls. One of the benefits of homeschooling.)

Uh oh. Now Guillermo is trying to play the Davids off each other, telling each of them they’re his favorite. Will he never stop flaming the fan wars? ;0)

  • Jabkmc

Cathy – that stuff on Kimmel was so cute!

Also – I’m behind in reading the threads so apologize if its already been mentioned..but I noticed that Cookie’s AOL sessions are up on YouTube if anyone wants to grab them… in case they disappear.

  • Lu

TPTB have got to be thrilled after AI7. It looks like they may have two bonafilde stars. I really like both Davids and wish them both loads of success. Finally, TPTB got their male winner that may actually hit it big.
