‘American Idol’ Daily: David Cook’s steps forward

It is the final rite of the “American Idol” season: the release of the champion’s first post-”Idol” album to the music-buying masses and, with it, the test of the show’s ability to consistently produce pop superstars. When the show first launched, the promise of its subtitle, “The search for the next pop superstar,” seemed as laughable to the music industry as if “Saved by the Bell” declared it would elect the next president.

Seven years later, the industry has very much stopped laughing. The little “Star Search” ripoff has proved its ability to churn out roughly one superstar a year (even if that superstar isn’t always the show’s winner). Clarkson, Aiken, Barrino, Underwood, Daughtry, Sparks — they’ve all proved themselves not just in the Idoldome, but at the check-out counter as well. And now it is David Cook’s turn.

David Cook: ‘The Whole Album Felt Rushed’

KANSAS CITY, MO — The last few months have been a whirlwind for hometown singer David Cook. And, Tuesday, November 18 is the tornado.

David Cook sat in a studio in New York doing interview after interview with television stations around the country to promote his new self-titled album. By the time he got to FOX 4 in Kansas City, he only had nine more left.

`Idol’ champ David Cook keeps rocking on new album

When he was on “American Idol,” David Cook à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ as cool as a cucumber for much of last season à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ fought back tears after performing for a studio audience that included his brother Adam, who’s fighting brain cancer.

It was a moment of raw emotion, winning Cook the sympathy of viewers who’ve also been touched by tragedy.

Cook’s tears have flowed more freely in private. The 25-year-old rocker, who won the Fox competition in May, fueled his anguish over Adam’s illness into the gut-wrenching ballad “Permanent,” one of 13 songs on his namesake debut album.

Idol David Cook releases album

Great artists meet with great expectations. That can be said of many highly anticipated debut albums from today’s most promising rising stars.

However, mention of “American Idol” leaves many music critics wincing in anticipatory agony. The show certainly has had its success stories: Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, Carrie Underwood, and Chris Daughtry have all broken through the Idol barrier and moved on to sell millions of records. But names like Sanjaya Malakar (a Top Six finalist), William Hung (who didn’t make it past the first audition), and Taylor Hicks (um, he won) have threatened the show’s credibility.

OUR VIEW: Sligh shows class in doing Kelsey benefit

Chris Sligh, an à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ top 10 finalist from Season 6, will be at Culpeper County High School Saturday to honor the memory of Kelsey Orndorff and raise money for two causes that were close to her heart.

It was a Sligh concert in Fredericksburg that Kelsey, a 17-year-old senior at Fredericksburg Christian School, was on her way to see when she died in a car wreck on Route 3. Local physician J. Bryon Cook was injured in the crash and spent nearly two months at the University of Virginia Health Center in Charlottesville.

Sligh, a Christian singer, slipped the Culpeper date into his busy tour schedule. He is not taking any pay for his performance, but at the request of the Orndorff family, he will be reimbursed for his travel expenses. In choosing to make the extra stop, Sligh has shown he is a class act before he sings one note.

‘Dancing With the Stars’: Cody Linley not saved by teenage girls

This has been a dramatic week for à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Dancing With the Starsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ celebrities past and present: Cloris Leachman reportedly came down with pneumonia (or at least a bad cough); the SEC charged Mark Cuban with some mavericky insider trading; Brooke Burke performed poorly for the first time; and, as of tonight, squealing teenage girls failed to save Cody Linley from elimination. I wonder: if Cody retains his celebrity over time, would he be allowed back in a future season to compete again? I bet heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d be a real contender in a few years. In any case, next week will bring not just Thanksgiving but also the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“DWTSà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ finals, and the lineup will be Lance Bass, Brooke Burke and Warren Sapp.

‘Dancing With the Stars’: Three is a Magic Number

On last night’s Dancing With the Stars extra value meal of a results show, we saluted eyebrow-y Hannah Montana actor Cody Linley for the last time…until next Tuesday, when everyone will return because it’s in their contracts! Cody’s ouster certainly came as no surprise, even to Warren Sapp, Cody’s ”still in jeopardy” co-captive, who gamely acted shocked for a split second after the announcement, then went back to having no cares in the world beyond how tightly the sequins will be sewn onto his shirt for next week’s freestyle. If he even wears a shirt! Sorry about that. Cody and Julianne looked way more adorable in those military costumes when the outfits weren’t clashing with their weird paso doble and an atrocious song choice, so I was glad they got some decent farewell screen time before my DVR’s random 10:02 p.m. cutoff. Best place to press pause all evening? When Cody and Julianne were hugging in two different places (and two different times!) at the end of Cody’s ”Memories” package. Well, that was almost the best place to pause. You can see its closest competition in the video player on the next page.

Networked Insights’ Music Chart Challenges Traditional

Last month, Networked Insights released a study challenging the Nielsen Co.’s ratings system by measuring what content is being discussed and shared online. Today, the social media research startup is releasing the second part of its study to take on Nielsen-owned Billboard Magazine and its weekly “Hot 100 chart.”

While traditional music charts like Billboard determine song rankings, based on sales and radio airplay, Networked Insights’ report attempts to offer a new take on music audience measurement by analyzing the millions of interactions occurring online everyday around the most popular songs.

In another finding, American Idol winner David Archuleta’s “Crush” is ranked third on Networked Insights’ list because of the strong interactive component of the show transferring to online interactions.

Yes he isn ´t the winner, the article made a mistake

    Hey, MJ-

Tom Moon (formerly of the Philadelphia Inquirer) reviewed “David Cook” yesterday evening on NPR’s “All Things Considered.” He panned it in the end (as one would expect from a critic of Moon’s reputation), but there was plenty of good in the review anyway, including clips of three songs on the album.

  • MrsTrep

Ok, so a few things here. I agree with the critic that says Cook is more of a Lifehouse/Creed combo than Daughtry 2.0.

Second, why did you make the 12th song 15 minutes? Couldn’t they have just made another track instead of putting two into one with a HUGE space between them?? I hate it when I can’t just listen to the entire CD, there are blank minutes. Drives me insane.

Lastly, I like the cd :)

  • cheese

Mrs. Trep – There is a (very fun) hidden song at the 12 minute mark of the 12th song. I would prefer to just have the extra song be on the track listing, too, since now I’ll have to figure out how to separate the tracks on iTunes (if my physical CD ever arrives)

There are probably many free software about for this purpose if you are interesed.

Bringing my NPR review comment over here.

PSHAW! on that review from NPR. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Histrionic singing?à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ I thought that was what attracted so many people to Cook. I saw it as expressive and real, not histrionic, as in:

    1. of or pertaining to actors or acting.
    2. deliberately affected or self-consciously emotional; overly dramatic, in behavior or speech.

Yeah, Cook has been acting all these years. Gosh, he WAS in those high school plays, ya know. And what could he possibly have to be overly dramatic about? Letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s seeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦could it beà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦LIFE, maybe? Oh, maybe men arenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t supposed to be so à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“emotional.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Much ado about nothing eh? And the songs are meaningless? I dunno, maybe he didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t hear the words. Ah well, YMMV!

ETA: Oh and once again, being compared to Nickelback is a BAD thing. Is it fashionable among à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“musicà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ people or à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“criticsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ to hate Nickelback for some reason? If you like them, are you not a music snob or something? I honestly donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get it. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t own any Nickelback but maybe Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll buy some to see what this is all about!

AND may I add that when I listened to the review, they played a commercial for Jackson Browne’s new CD and there was a banner on the site for it also. Several years ago, I went to see Jackson Browne. John Hiatt was his opener. LOVE John Hiatt! However, when Jackson Browne came on, I didn’t even stay for one whole song. BOOOOOOOOOOOORING. And talk about acting emotional. OK you NPR people, listen to the WORDS. Listen to the VOICE. Better yet, see David Cook LIVE! Yeah. Histrionic singing, indeed. Humph. That’s why WE LOVE YOU, COOK!

Richard Rushfield/LA Times blogged (again) about David C’s release and other Idol stuff:

    LA Times blog

  • sma11ie

Ooh, that SFGate article was full of win!

Cavallo compares Cook to big-voiced former Journey frontman Steve Perry, who dropped by the studio while Cook was recording.
“He really is an unbelievably gifted singer,” Cavallo says of
Cook. “There’s no song on the record that he didn’t sing in two or three takes. … He can sing harmony to any of his songs
automatically without even thinking about it.”

And I have to agree that with the cognitive dissonance someone mentioned in the other thread regarding the NPR “review”. Haha, the clips they played were so awesome that it was hard to pay any attention to that guy droning on negatively about the album in that odd reading voice of his. Talk about histrionic, someone needs to tell that a good radio voice isn’t someone who sounds like their reading sentences, and adopting an overly dramatic voice doesn’t make your words more important.

  • Lisa

Now see, that’s definitely a case of YMMV. Although Jackson Browne doesn’t have stellar vocal chops, he’s arguably one of the most gifted songwriters of his generation. I personally like the way he sings his own music.

If NPR dude believed it was possible for David Cook, coming off an Idol win, to make the next great alt/rock album, then he hasn’t a clue as to how Idol works, and I think that’s true of a lot of these music critics reviewing the album.

LOL. You know? Not to mention David Cook himself telegraphed what he was about big time. If you listened to his previous work (and listened to his interviews) you heard someone who loved radio friendly, lyric centered, 90s influenced, anthemic rock. He did the same thing as his previous albums with better production – in a few months while on a grueling tour. With idol “play it safe” people all over him. Who could be surprised/disappointed by the result? Only if you weren’t paying attention, imo.

Anyway, I’m kinda not surprised, since the Jayde, the female morning show dj, lurves him – as anyone who listened to his interview on their morning show probably remembers. But OMG YAY!1!1!!!11!!!1!! Maybe there’s something going on with the AI Experience attraction at Disney around that time, too. I’ll play devil’s advocate here. I haven’t listened to all of Cook’s album yet and I didn’t listen to the NPR interview, either. I’m not making a value judgment since I don’t have all the info.

However, why should a critic judge Cook on how Idol works? Shouldn’t he be judging the music itself? No doubt each critic comes to the table with particular tastes. Often, those tastes don’t match those of the music buying public, so it’s no big deal. But if a music critic is reviewing an album, why should it matter how the Idol machine works when evaluating it? Certainly, we may cut our faves some slack for having to throw something together, but I’m not sure that’s the job of a critic. They’re evaluating the product, not the process.

In the end, I doubt the critics influence all that much.

  • elisad

^You’re assuming critics really do their job LOL. After AMG’s review came out, so many of them just pick out a part of it, and re-write a little as their own review, it’s laughable.

  • smartcookie

I love Jackson Browne, too. I think he’s one of the best lyricists in rock (or pop or folk-rock-pop, whatever you want to call him) ever. I do like “My Opening Farewell” better sung by Bonnie Raitt, but then, I like her “Angels of Montgomery” better than John Prine’s, and he wrote it, so… But the lyrics of “Fountain of Sorrow” and “Late for the Sky” and “Opening Farewell” are just gorgeous. I love DC to bits, but if he can write lyrics like Jackson Browne some day, he will be doing very, very well.

Meanwhile, they are obviously completely different types and from completely different eras. Jackson Browne has singer/songwriter/70s written all over him. Still love him, though. I’ll just see myself out, humming, fountain of sorrow, fountain of light, you’ve known that hollow sound of your own steps in flight…

^Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re assuming critics really do their job LOL. After AMGà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s review came out, so many of them just pick out a part of it, and re-write a little as their own review, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s laughable.

Some critics do their jobs. Some go with the flow. Like I said, I didn’t listen to the NPR thing. If he’s coming from an indie/alt rock bias, that doesn’t make his opinion wrong. If he copied someone else’s review, then that’s lame. In the end, it’s all a matter of taste. Reviews have little impact on success.

  • elisad

I didn’t listen to it either. What I mean is, if even “copying” is not a problem for (at least some of) them, having a bias against or for an Idol alumni certainly wouldn’t be either. Those who don’t “go with the flow” doesn’t necessarily mean they’re just gonna be perfectly “fair and balanced”.

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

I see your point. But I don’t think that “fair and balanced” is part of the job of a critic. It’s all about opinion.

At the same time, if you’re a critic and just following the lead of other critics, then you don’t really have an opinion. You’re a lemming.

I haven’t been following the reviews. I have no idea how either of the David’s are doing.

  • Hisaki

I use reviews as an indication of whether the music I’m listening to is of any worth or not, but ultimately a good/bad review won’t be enough to sway me from listening to something bad if I want to listen to it for some reason, or vice-versa. And I doubt the majority of the people even bother to read reviews in the first place.

Hahaha, Cook being Daughtry 2.0? I call Daughtry Nickelback 2.0, myself.

I havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t been following the reviews. I have no idea how either of the Davidà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s are doing.

Because I’m an obsessed little girl who has too much time on her hands (or simply no motivation to do any real work), I’ve read nearly every professional review of Cook’s album that I can get my hands on. The reactions are all over the spectrum, although I’m just happy the majrity of fans are taking the album well. :)

Thanks for all the great links! Both the CNN and MTV interviews with DC were cute and fun to watch. I loved the beginning of the CNN interview.

So I saw these things posted here earlier and wanted to come back to watch, and was baffled (for a moment) that these headlines were for 10-19-08…

mj, I know you’re busy these days. :)

    Also both of these posts:

If NPR dude believed it was possible for David Cook, coming off an Idol win, to make the next great alt/rock album, then he hasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t a clue as to how Idol works, and I think thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s true of a lot of these music critics reviewing the album.

LOL. With idol à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“play it safeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ people all over him. Who could be surprised/disappointed by the result? Only if you werenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t paying attention, imo.

    Are FTW!!! Thanks!
Just one question, when these reviewers are saying that DC is Daughtry 2.0, what’s their excuse, are they crunched for time?…Ah, well whatever will be will be.

But if a music critic is reviewing an album, why should it matter how the Idol machine works when evaluating it? Certainly, we may cut our faves some slack for having to throw something together, but Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not sure thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the job of a critic. Theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re evaluating the product, not the process.

Well, I think the process is part of the work. In my opinion, the best critics understand that works don’t exist in a vacuum. This is not about cutting David slack, it’s about understanding that works of art, be they music, paintings, movies, are influenced by the history and culture that produced them.

I’ve been reading these reviews these past couple of weeks, and the best reviews, be they positive or negative, have come from people who watch Idol, and understand how it works.

Having said that, the NPR critic didn’t attempt to just critique the music. He brought Idol into the discussion. He said that after watching David on Idol, he hoped he’d be a different kind of Idol. My point was that if this particular critic understood how Idol worked, he wouldn’t have been so disappointed.

That’s interesting. I don’t think it’s wrong of him to bring up Idol. It’s like Bo Bice. Loved him on the show. Hated what they did to his first album. That doesn’t change the fact that it sucked, though. And I’m not saying Cook’s album sucks.

You’re saying the NPR dude had higher hopes for Cook. So that means that his reaction to the final cut is less valid? He should put an asterisk next to his review with a disclaimer that it’s an Idol album, so it’s okay that he was disappointed? Sounds to me like the NPR guy had an honest reaction. I will go and listen to the full review tomorrow so I know what the hell I’m referencing.

Haha, the clips they played were so awesome that it was hard to pay any attention to that guy droning on negatively about the album in that odd reading voice of his.

I actually had to listen to the NPR review twice to realize he was saying anything negative because the clips were so awesome. It’s always a good thing when the music can speak for itself! It’s interesting that a lot of the negative reviews are based on the reviewers having high expectations of David. It’s flattering but a bit unfair. Kind of like how Simon used to treat Carly. However, based on the music I’ve heard on NPR, I’m not sure that they would have given a good review of the album under any circumstance. I think the fact that they took the time to review David’s album was the best we could hope for. In the end, I see it as good publicity.

I will go and listen to the full review tomorrow so I know what the hell Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m referencing.

LOL. I wish some of the album reviewers would do the same.

I don’t think this has been posted here yet. The WPLJ Acoustic Cafe performance of LO and interview with David Cook yesterday is now up on their website: http://www.plj.com/Article.asp?id=910040

    Enjoy!

^And there is also a Fresh102.7 one, interview and acoustic LO. I love seeing Neal, heehee.

He has a right to feel however he wants. My point is that he speaks like someone who doesn’t understand the Idol machine. I thought it was funny. I thought his take on Idol was naive. It was like “OMG, I thought Cook was going to change everything!” Uhm, NO.

Not the best review ever for me. Like I said, I prefer the reviews from critics who are familiar with Idol and understand how it works. That’s just me, though.
