Then why didn’t [Queen] want Adam for the Olympics? I seriously doubt that Queen could not have asked him even if he isn’t British. The BAND is British and has a decades long history. It wouldn’t matter if they had a non-Brit guest singer as a frontman. What it shows is that they have a stable of singers to choose from and they don’t need Adam to be successful.

Adam was asked (before the Olympics) if he’d be performing with Queen, and he replied that he wasn’t allowed to, since he’s not a British citizen.  Someone wrote an article shortly before the Olympics citing a rumor that he’d be performing — and then quickly wrote a retraction that included an intriguing bit about Brian and Roger appealing to the powers that be to allow Adam to sing with them.  According to the story, they were denied.

The person they ended up singing with was Jessie J, a lovely singer, but not one that they’ve ever chosen to sing with before.  She is, however, a British singer.  She’s also popular, striking, and was readily available for that night — since she sang one of her own hits earlier in the show.

After watching the show, I think it was the right decision.  It was a celebration of British music, and it wouldn’t have been appropriate to have a Yankee upstart showing up.  Had the focus of the show been more global (as it was at the EMAs), then I think he would have been fabulous up there with Queen.

“haha.. I like Ruben and rooting for him during Idol but never heard he
is classically trained. His background is gospel and he’s been singing
gospel since he’s a kid. He is majoring in voice study in college before
change his direction from gospel to Jazz & R&B.”

I think that Ruben is a great singer, but I think that he’s had “formal” vocal training rather than “classical” of “operatic” vocal training.

    Very well said, Incipit.

Kirsten, I do not believe you know how insurance works. Let me explain,   much like life insurance one can pick 2 million or 1 thousand, which is based upon what you yourself can pay for premiums.  Does that mean the life of the one mill policy was anymore valuable than the life of the one who could only pay 1,000?  Not to me.  It means that one could afford more than the other period.  Loyds  of London will insure just about anything.  That is if you can afford the premiums.  Obviously Adam can.  I know someone who was a hand model and had her hands insured.  Good thing to as she was in a car accident and her hands got badly scared.

I believe the only way the insurer would not pay out would be if Adam intentionally slashed his throat.  The only way life insurance does not pay out is if one died by act of suicide.

But I think it is a very good idea on Adam’s part to insure his voice.  Look at all those with vocial issues now.  Very smart of Adam if you ask me.

    Reminder:

You have no idea how disheartening it was to find an incredibly rude and overly defensive post (The op is BANNED by the way) liked by 21 PEOPLE. I should ban you all.

Seriously, this sh*t is not life or death. Calm down.

  • http://twitter.com/Loretta31 Loretta

As I made note to Kristen, let me just reiterate how insurance works.  Like life insurance you can pick the amount of insurance based upon how much you can afford in premimums.  One person can afford 20 mil in life insurance because they can pay 2,000 a month.  Another person can only afford 78 dollars a month so they can only afford a 1500 policy.  This does not mean one life is more valuable or worth more or less than the other.  It is just on who can afford what.   so if Adam selected to insure his voice for 30 mil it was because he could afford the premium for that.  The only way the insurance would not be paid out if Adam’s voice does become injured would be if his intentionally slashed his throat.  Life insurance is the same and does not pay out for deaths caused by suicide.

Back in the day, I had a friend who was a hand model and she used Lloyds of London to insure her hands.  Good thing because she was in a car accident and she badly scared her hands.  I think she only insured her hands for 100,000.

Thanks Incipit for explaining that. I think where some of his fans get confused is that he did have years of vocal lessons and he or his teacher (it’s been a while so I don’t remember where it was said) have talked about how he did study/learn/practice opera (or should I say operatic technique) for a year or so while taking vocal lessons. You are right he has never claimed to be classically trained or an opera singer. When he is asked about his voice he is pretty humble about it. There have been articles by opera singers or people who work in opera talking about his voice and his ability and they have described how he uses a lot of classical technique in his use of his voice and his phrasing when singing. He has also talked about singing in foreign languages. He sang in Latin (and probably Italian) in chorus in HS and he sang in German while performing Hair in Germany and he has sung in Hebrew.
Regardless I get what you are saying his vocal training was not the same as or as rigorous as an opera singer but he seems to have had a lot more vocal training than most pop singers today.

This is from Spike the current keyboard player for Queen (plus he has his own band)

Very nice words for Adam and here’s hoping more future collaborations. It’s always amazing to hear people who have been in the business for years say such nice things about Adam. This is well after their performances together so there is no PR benefit here. Spike has his own successful career so he’s not garnering any major benefit to himself by dropping Adam’s name.  It’s just what this guy really thinks.

After one week into the Extravaganza tour, Roger and I rushed back to
London to rehearse with the fabulously talented Adam Lambert. This guy
is one of the most naturally charismatic and gifted vocalists I have
ever seen. He appeared on American Idol as a contestant in 2009 and when
I saw him I knew at once he was a phenomenal talent and hoped that I’d
get to work with him one day. Then in Nov 2011, as luck would have it,
MTV asked Queen to perform the closing finale of the MTV Europe awards
in Belfast. It was a brilliant performance and 6 months later there we
were, rehearsing for six amazing Summer shows. Checkout the Kiev debut
live to 500,000 screaming fans on youtube, plus Moscow, Wroclaw in
Poland and 3 wondrous nights at Hammersmith Apollo /Odeon. If you were
there you know what I’m talking about and if you weren’t, then keep your
fingers crossed and hope that it wasn’t a once in a lifetime
    collaboration.

Life insurance is the same and does not pay out for deaths caused by suicide.

    I’ve
heard that most of them have a 2 year rule. You cannot commit suicide
in the first two years of the contract. Some contracts do exclude it
    altogether.

We all eventually die of something.

As I made note to Kristen, let me just reiterate how insurance works.
Like life insurance you can pick the amount of insurance based upon how
much you can afford in premimums.

    Risk factors
also play a part. If you smoke, many life insurance policies increase
your rates. Some life insurance policies aren’t even granted until
you’ve had a mini-physical. If you do fairly risky things (like travel
to war zones, scuba dive, etc) you may void your policy altogether if
    you die while doing them.

There are lots of fun things that you can do that risk your voice. I wonder if engaging in them would affect your rates

    so
if Adam selected to insure his voice for 30 mil it was because he could
    afford the premium for that.

    I thought this
“voice insurance” was purchased by a third party. Kind of like that
insurance AEG bought for Michael Jackson. Michael was only worth
$17.5M…and they eventually dropped their claim because they weren’t
forthright about Michael’s health and habits.

  • marmom07

While the number for Adam’s voice does seem high relative to other numbers posted here for various things. It’s possible the policy only pays out for something considered career ending. Like the botched throat surgery for Juile Andrews. It’s less likely that Adam would have a career ending injury than something temporary that could cause him to have to cancel shows. As others have said it’s essentially the same as disability insurance for any worker who is disabled in way that prevents them from earning a living. The amount to be paid out is based on what Adam or his management thinks his potential earnings will be and what they are willing to pay in premiums.

Caveat: All my speculation of course, I don’t know what is written in the policy.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_S3ZGXZCUE2YYOS7QV6QSTKM4SA buffynut2001

IMO, the insurance (taken out by his management) is because a Queen tour is in the near future. A tour like this will be in large venues and one cancellation would cost millions to the promoter, band, management. I don’t find it strange at all.

  • http://twitter.com/Loretta31 Loretta

The 30 mil IMO wasn’t for a year or for now but over the life ofAdam’s  career or over the upcoming tour with a clause for a lifetime payment if permanent damage done.  My hand model friend paid premimums for years before she injured her right hand.  Her right rand went through the windshield and was terribly scarred.  She wished she had insured her hands for more.  She could have.  That is all I know.

That is how this speciality insurance was explained to me.  My friend could have selected more insurance for her hands if she could afford the premiums.   Once contacted the insurance company probably presented Adam with several packages ranging in price and coverage.

I do however find this discussion baffeling.  I personally do not care if Adam insured his voice (or someone else did) for 30 mil or 300 mil or 30,000.  If he or his managment or whomever  felt it was valued as such and if the insurance was granted it, they believe it was.

I happen to think such insurance is smart.  I think all singers should purchase it.  Singers today push their voices to the limits and they do extensive damage to their vocal cords.

  • http://twitter.com/Loretta31 Loretta

Oh this could be it!  I didn’t even think about that!  Yep if Adam lost his voice for even 1 show the lost $$ could be huge.  Makes sense.

  • Larc

I think you’re right about a Queen tour.  The fact that the insurance was taken out in the UK rather than the US is a strong indicator.  Even if the insurer is Lloyd’s of London (which it likely is since they are famous for covering such things), coverage could have been arranged in the US and in $s instead of £s since Lloyd’s operates in the US through brokers and its own licensed agents in Illinois and Kentucky.

  • ANNIEBA

I just hope Adam never has to cash in on this insurance. He is very careful with his voice so it is unlikely but would hate to have him injure those those golden vocal chords!

Lol I had to check I was in the headlines thread!!

In other news-I am so happy that Kris is going to be doing a Christmas album- he  does Christmas songs so well as they mean a lot to him because of his faith. Can’t wait to hear what songs will be included.

I realize that everyone has moved on, but I just wanted to mention something regarding “insurable risk” from an insider’s perspective.  You cannot insure something or someone for any arbitrary figure you want.  You must prove the extent of the financial loss (whether it be on an item or a life).  An insurer will not cover something or someone for more that it is worth, regardless of how much premium you are willing to pay.   If they did, there would be a financial incentive to claim which is entirely contrary to the concept of insurance.  If Adam’s voice is actually insured for $50 mil, it is because someone proved to the insurer that the financial loss to the “policyholder” (which may anyone who has an insurable interest in his voice – Adam, label, promoter, etc.) would, in fact, equal or exceed this amount.  The incentive has to exist for Adam to continue to perform as the insurer has deemed that his ability to continue to sing will generate more revenue than the amount of the insurance policy.

Really, though.  Who knows what it covers (if it even exists).  In reality it would probably cover a very short list of very unlikely situations or conditions.  Otherwise, the premiums would be prohibitive and the conditions under Adam would have to live his life would be too restrictive.

lol…..can anyone really see Adam giving up the weed for any period of time to adhere to the conditions of a policy?

  • lovetheusa1776

Seeing him on the 29th – maybe he’ll mention it.

  • lovetheusa1776

Hasn’t shot down the insurance policy article yet.  Obviously knows about it.  If it exists, would be interesting to know the details – but probably never will.

It certainly makes sense, as others have posted, to have insurance, considering his voice is his bread and butter.

And, from what I’ve observed over these years, it’s the one thing he protects religiously.
