American Idol show lived up to its sponsor’s name

It’s rather fitting that the American Idol tour is sponsored by Pop Tarts.

They were handing out packs of Pop Tarts after the concert and as I popped pieces of the rectangular slab of sugar into my jaws I was thinking … hmm this is kind of like the show, sugary frosting goodness on the outside, and an inside that you know will only fill you up for about 15 minutes…..

Fall forecast looking gloomy for music industry

Idols: Carrie vs. the rest

Double bill: It’s not much of a contest. Underwood’s second album, “Carnival Ride” (Oct. 23), overshadows everything from the “American Idol” camp. 2007 winner Jordin Sparks has a Nov. 20 release date for an as-yet-untitled album, while runner-up Blake Lewis hopes to have an album out in “late 2007.” Bo Bice’s “See the Light” shares Carrie’s release date.

Double features: Underwood has already generated a near-instant top 10 hit with “So Small.” Bice is returning to his Southern-rock roots. Sparks’ single, “Tattoo,” is co-written by James Blunt collaborator Amanda Ghost.

Double talk: Underwood should have one of the best-selling albums of the fall, although a repeat in the 6 million range may be tough to pull off. Considering the subpar sales of Taylor Hicks (under 700,000) and Katharine McPhee (about 350,000), Sparks and Lewis are long shots to pull off a Daughtry-style sales coup (3 million-plus). Bice’s album will sell mostly to his dedicated fan base. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Barnes

Hundreds show for ‘Idol,’ redux

The American Idol frenzy continues in Dallas à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ this time at the luxurious W Hotel. Hundreds of second-round contestants showed up at the Victory Park hotel Thursday morning to audition for the show’s executive producers.

An Idol publicist said those “few hundred” contestants would be whittled down to an unspecified number. Contestants who then make it to the third round will audition sometime this weekend in front of Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson.

All three are reportedly scheduled to arrive in Dallas today, though Idol would not release details on when. Auditions will take place throughout the weekend at the W Hotel.

In August, more than 12,000 people braved the heat for daylong tryouts at Texas Stadium. But unlike the first round, this one will be closed to the media and general public. Contestants have signed statements agreeing not to talk publicly about the process or whether they will advance to subsequent rounds. Contestants who make it through in Dallas will go on to Hollywood to audition live on TV.

The American Idol tryouts will start airing on Fox in January.

Hicks one of new BJCC-area tenants

    Thursday, September 20, 2007
    ROY L. WILLIAMS
    News staff writer

“American Idol” Taylor Hicks has signed a letter of intent to open a nightclub in a planned downtown Birmingham entertainment district, the head of a Memphis development firm said Wednesday.

The Hoover native and 2006 winner of the Fox television singing competition headed a list of new tenants announced by John Elkington of Performa Entertainment Real Estate during a Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex board meeting.

His unnamed club will feature Hicks’ Southern-style rock as well as live entertainment by local and regional acts, according to Performa. In addition, Hicks plans to perform at the club on a regular basis and other Idol performers are expected to appear from time to time.

Hicks will join fellow “Idol” winner and Birmingham’s Ruben Studdard, who last month signed a deal to open a nightspot he calls Ruben’s Club 205.

If anything perfectly describes a non-sequitur, the above statement is it.

Actually Little, the statement followed a totally logical flow of thought.

I posted that Plato said fools talk because they have to say something.

You suggested that he should say nothing.

Ergo, you inferred that he’s a fool.

    Perfectly logical conclusion to draw.

An example of a non sequitur would be…

Person 1 says, “Plato said that fools talk because they have something to say.”

Person 2 says, “Taylor is hawt and I want to bite his thighs.”

Of course, that is also an example of retardation.

    Moving on…

Happy Birthday spawn of dcd and grandspawn of Koolmom!!!

Now, I’m off to Home Depot AGAIN. Someone seriously needs to stop me. What in the name of Finn was I thinking? I really should have called “the guy” Next thing you know I’m going to tear down the bloody house and rebuild it.

LOL, Lisa. Hey, I have to be…tomorrow is another day. ;-D Thanks. :)

  • Little Boy Blue

I posted that Plato said fools talk because they have to say something.

You suggested that he should say nothing.

Ergo, you inferred that heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a fool.

    Perfectly logical conclusion to draw.

I ASKED A QUESTION, I DID NOT INFER ANYTHING.

The question implies this — since he is being interviewed, and the question asked is relevant to what he had to say, why should he not say what he said ? Where does it infer that he should say nothing ? That’s where the non-sequitur is.

As for Plato, if “fools talk because they have to say something…”, then Plato had lots of things to say ( lots of things in fact in his Republic ). Here’s the question — what does that make him ? (that’s a question, not a conclusion ).

  • http://www.myspace.com/mignonette33 purplesmile

    Thanks, pj. :)

He was really nice. He must have been very tired from the trip and the activities of the day (his singing showed traces of it at times), but he was still very accomodating and sweet to everyone at the meet and greet. :)

Mid-way into his set, he took out his video camera and filmed his audience. Crazy guy. :D

  • hezzer19

    Sweet Finn.

First, don’t yell at me. It’s rude.

Second, I realize you were asking a question. I recognized the question mark at the end of the sentence. Perhaps I assumed you were continuing the discussion by employing the Socratic method.

Third, I suggest you look up the term non sequitur. I’m not entirely certain you grasp the true meaning.

Fourth, what question would the response of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Life throws many curveballs at you and if you donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t swing, youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re not gonna hit them.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ be relevant? Unless the question was “What do you consider the lamest advise you’ve ever been given?”

Fifth, you clearly missed the first part of Plato’s quote which is “Wise men talk because they have something to say”. Plato had a great deal to say. He never spoke just for the fun of hearing his own voice.

Ohhh that brings to mind a brilliant quote from Shakespeare in Henry the 5th. Men of few words are the best men.

Last but not least, MJ is probably going to delete this entire conversation, and I’d not blame her, so if you’d like it to continue feel free to join us in chat one evening.

ETA Yes Mom you are. But I love you anyway. LMAO

America’s Hot Musician in Final Talks With Ovation TV for Prime Time Launch in October 2007

America’s Hot Musician(http://www.americashotmusician.org), the reality competition for instrumental musicians, is in final discussions with the new arts network Ovation TV for a mid-October prime time launch.

Ovation TV, which blasted onto the television landscape in June, 2007, to fill a void once filled by networks like BRAVO, now reaches over 16 million subscribers via Directv, and via master cable distribution agreements currently showing its network in New York, Chicago, Washington D.C., Tampa/St. Petersburg, Orlando, San Diego, San Antonio and Austin.

“The launch of this fresh network is great timing for us and a great synergy for our program whose mission is to promote instrumental music within the MTV/Hip Hop Generation,” says Gregory Charles Royal, one of the judges on the show and the Artistic Director of American Youth Symphony (AYS), which produces the show.

America’s Hot Musician, is similar to American Idol and MTV’s Real World in that individual musicians audition before a spirited three judge panel, partake in subsequent performances and then live together where their experiences are chronicled featuring poignant video diaries. .The public votes from the semi-finals on and the winner receives a one year recording contract.

The judges include National Symphony Orchestra principal second violinist Marissa Regni, Talena Atfield, a young bassist formerly with the girl band Kittie, and Royal, a jazz trombonist and Duke Ellington Orchestra alum who was also a featured musician in the Broadway musical Five Guys Named Moe.

The musicians, who play a variety of styles from classical, to rock, to bebop, come from all over the country and are both professional and amateur. It is the producer’s aim to make instrumental performance, a mainstream alternative to rapping and singing hence, the popular format.

Ovation TV and AYS are negotiating for the series to air Monday evenings beginning October 15, 2007.

I dunno, Elliott’s not that big of a guy, but he’ll crawl ya. ($1 to Joel Hodgson)

  • Little Boy Blue

First, I am not yelling at you. CAPITALIZATIONS ARE FOR EMPHASIS.

Second, If you realized that I asked a question, then you wouldn’t say that I was implying that Taylor should keep his mouth shut.

Third, A non-sequitur in the original simply means DOES NOT FOLLOW.

The fact that you say that “I’m suggesting he should say nothing indicates you consider him a fool” ( see your post Sep 20th, 2007 at 3:32 pm ) is a non-sequitur because I never suggested it. In fact I suggest that what he said was APPROPRIATE. Ergo, what you suggest DOES NOT FOLLOW from my question. A non-sequitur.

Fourth, I believe Taylor’s response is broader than that. The interview was divided into bits and pieces with one major theme — The context of the conversation was his rough childhood and the difficulties he faced before he became successful. The baseball analogy is APPROPRIATE. Which is, If you want to win the game ( in his case, win in the music industries ), you must be prepared to face a lot of difficulties (curveballs), but don’t give up ( continue to SWING ).

Fifth, If as you say —- Platoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s quote which is à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Wise men talk because they have something to sayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ . Plato had a great deal to say. He never spoke just for the fun of hearing his own voice. Then I would not categorize Taylor’s response as UNWISE and thus, having NOTHING to say. Like Plato in Philosophy, Taylor has a lot to say about his experience, he isn’t making that statement simply to hear his own voice but rather, to respond to the CONTEXT of the interview.

RE: “Men of few words are the best men.”
UH HUH, And what does that make Shakespeare ? He isn’t a man of few words by any stretch of the imagination.

If MJ wants to delete this, its her call.
I don’t join the chats, I can’t spend too much time on it. Thanks for the Love.

As Shakespeare used to say : “But love is blind, and lovers cannot see What petty follies they themselves commit”

First, CAPITALIZATIONS are generally annoying and you come across as an idiot when you overuse them

Second, have you never heard of sarcasm?

Third, are you seriously explaining what a Latin word means to me? I know the origin and the meaning of the word quite well thank you, and it does not mean precisely what you think it means although you’re on the right track.

We’ve already covered the fact that your suggestion that he say nothing was posed in the form of a question and I’ve already responded to that so I’ll not do it again.

I’ll take you at your word that his response was appropriate as I didn’t actually read the article however, I still maintain he sounded like an idiot. He should leave the maxims to Marcus Aurelius as I said in my original post. You however, have proven yourself to be far worse than an idiot by continuing this argumentum ad nauseam.

Fifth, the original quote from Plato was actually directed at you and Taylor. Do I need to explain that one?

Do not, at any time, mess with Shakespeare.

The invitation to chat was also sarcasm.

You’ve said, (and I’m paraphrasing) if my posts bother you just skip them, often enough. I suggest you follow your own advise.

In the immortal words of Saint Augustine, “the argument is at an end”.

    1) Those are MY PROTOCOL. Take it or leave it.

    2) I am a very poor detector of sarcasm. If you are being sarcastic, here’s a suggestion, put on a /sarc tag.

    3) Knowing the meaning of a word is DIFFERENT from using it correctly. Tale my response as a response to the hypothetical assumption that the statement was not sarcastic.

    4) It was not an article that was written it was an AUDIO INTERVIEW with PBS. It would be best then for you not to comment without listening to it.

    5) Plato isn’t one of my favorite guys. Anyone who would recommend that the children should be taken by the state from their parents in order to further some utopian objectives should be taken with caution. Beware intellectuals ( as historian Paul Johnson would say ).

    6) Shakespeare isn’t God. I can mess with him anytime I want. Tell the Bard to sue me if he isn’t happy.

    7) I never back away from an entertaining exchange.

    8) St. Augustine deserves to live in the City of God. I am still living in the city of man. In this forum MJ is the omnipotent being.

Seriously, enough already. I must have missed you when I handed out intelligence, common sense, and a sense of humor.

I swore I wouldn’t respond but a couple of points are screaming at me and so I must.

    1) Those are MY PROTOCOL. Take it or leave it.

    1. A) Nice grammar /SARCASM

    B) You may want to look up the word protocol as well.

    2. So you admit to using the word non sequitur incorrectly? Excellent. My work is done.

    3. Have you actually read The Republic? Or The Laws for that matter? If you did you clearly did not understand either of them. Then again, you’ve admitted you do not detect sarcasm well so I assume you don’t detect irony either. Plato wrote with a great deal of both. He also had a great sense of humour. No wonder you don’t like him.

    4. Plato did not coin the word Utopia. Utopia actually translates as “not place”. He titled his book Utopia as a joke to amuse his good friend Erasmus. Thomas More understood irony as well as Plato did.

Oh, and Shakespeare just gave me $1.00 as a retainer. I’ll draft the claim in the morning.

I just realized I deleted a sentence by accident. Thomas More coined the word Utopia.

    *giggle*

See now, I do have a sense of humour and am capable of laughing at myself and admitting when I make a mistake.

Not to worry, my child. Although few, I too have made one or two mistakes in my time.

I have also admitted to one such mistake. See my previous post.
