Matt Giraud goes from Forest Hills Fine Arts Center to ‘American Idol’ and back again for 2009 season

GRAND RAPIDS — When American Idol’s Matt Giraud of Kalamazoo performs at the Forest Hills Fine Arts Center in January, the irony of the venue won’t escape him.

“Two years ago, I auditioned for West Michigan Idol (at FHFAC) and didn’t make it,” Giraud said in a phone interview from an “American Idols Live” tour stop in Sacramento, Calif. “I guess I’m coming full circle.”

Sparks’ sophomore CD reveals new range, depth

Two years of life experience since her self-titled debut album and a more relaxed studio schedule this time around have served Glendale’s Jordin Sparks well on her second CD.

Although her first effort showed Sparks starting to move to a more mature sound than she displayed in winning the sixth season of “American Idol,” Sparks has added power, edge and soul to her delivery on “Battlefield.”

Battlefield

On her second album, 2007 “American Idol” champ Jordin Sparks collaborates with a small army of A-list songwriters and producers, including T-Pain and OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder. A few ditties sound like Kelly Clarkson rejects, but Sparks’ effervescent voice sparkles on state-of-the-art pop concoctions such as “Watch You Go,” “S.O.S. (Let the Music Play)” (which samples ’80s disco queen Shannon) and the martial single from which “Battlefield” takes its title. In stores Tuesday, July 21. Grade: B+

How many #1 singles does Carrie Underwood have?

The Season 4 American Idol winner has had a record-breaking 10 number one singles. This makes her the first Country artist in history to have all their singles from their first two albums land the top spots on the music charts.

Her American Idol winning single, ‘Inside your heaven’ debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Five months later in November of 2005, Underwood released her debut album Some Hearts along with its first single, ‘Jesus, take the wheel’ , which was number one on the U.S. Hot Billboard Country songs chart for six consecutive weeks.

Original ‘Idol’ Clarkson still going strong

It’s easy to argue that ‘American Idol’ has produced more forgettables and regrettables than enduring pop stars.

Clay Aiken, are you out there? Reuben? Soul Patrol?

Suddenly, 15 minutes of fame becomes 15 nanoseconds. Next thing you know, you’re singing ‘Beauty School Dropout’ in a ‘Grease’ musical.

So it’s all the more impressive that Kelly Clarkson is still going strong and pumping out hits seven years after being crowned the first-ever winner of the popular televised contest.

    LOL…Kradam…<3

Too cute, I of course wouldn’t know if it is true or not, but this excerpt from the comment section of the Showbizspy article should have the Kradam fanfic crowd jumping for joy!

“Also, one more thing. There was a moment where Kris and Adam were standing side by side besides the deserts table in the lounge area when they just looked at each other. Kris gave Adam this smile scrunchy eyed smile, Adam smiled back, Kris then literally threw his head into Adam’s chest in this hilarious boyish, embarrassed manner, lol. Adam kissed his head, Kris looked up, smiled AGAIN and Adam kissed his forehead. LOL. It was very, very adorable. Kris is really comfortable in his own skin, isn’t he? How lovely. Or perhaps he was a little tipsy. Either way, it warmed my cold heart. Yes, it was THAT precious.

That is an amazing stat about Carrie. I don’t know if she gets enough praise from the idol fandom, probably because she’s doing country music, but she’s a superstar. Saw the Idols in LA ‘“ spotted a number of celebs at the show too. The stadium stood up after Adam Lambert’s set. Felt a little bad for Kris but Adam blew. me. away. The guys the real deal. Just needs solid universal material on par with his talent.

The after party was good. Told Kris Allen he was fabulous, he beamed and said, ‘YOU’RE fabulous!!’ He was very funny and cute. Just a really nice, genuine, fun guy with a dry sense of humour which I appreciate.

Adam was with his (hot, flamboyant) friends initially but later had everyone around him. He made everyone laugh. The guy knows how to work a crowd, very natural, warm, personable, sociable, witty, funny. You find yourself going to him. One minute he is ‘omg’ flaily-adorable and extremely huggable, the next he’s overwhelmingly sexy, smooth and tall and his eyes pierce you LOL. So you have snarky me who hates the Idol machine thinking ‘Erm Jesus Christ this man is HOT & I kind of want to do him’ as he was talking to us. His speaking voice and laugh alone did it for me, ha ha. But his features are also just really nice. He has a -perfect- nose, girl, seriously. And his eyes and smile are lovely. His hair looks thick yet feathery soft, totally silky & shiny up close. Very jealous. Anyway, completely charming guy.

Great night. Also, one more thing. There was a moment where Kris and Adam were standing side by side besides the deserts table in the lounge area when they just looked at each other. From the Showbiz Spy story:

It was more the observational tone and detail did sound like someone relating a scene that had been there. I definitely thought details were likely exaggerated. I don’t know, I don’t read fanfic, so maybe I’m not clued into its tone.

@Mtlfan, thanks! I was going in journalist mode at first, but then thought, “What the hell, I’m not being paid for this, I can editorialize if I want to.” Tried to dial back on the snarkiness, but it did leak out at times.

  • Q3

i wonder too how this is working.
Seems to me that they have some latitude in choosing their producers/collaborators (seem Kris sent an email to Fray’s Joe King). I guess they are also being reached by some (think RedOne was the one who reaches for Adam).

Kris worked with Joe King in the studio about 4 weeks ago. From VH1.com 6/22/09:

But Allen has already spent time with writer and producer Joe King, the guitarist and songwriter from the Fray. Allen performed King’s version of Kanye West’s “Heartless” on the show, and the pair recently spent two days in Timbaland’s studio in Virginia Beach, where they demoed a song. “I’m literally in the studio mixing the rough demo right now,” King said via telephone from Toronto (the Fray just began the first leg of their North American tour). “It doesn’t have a title yet. It doesn’t even have lyrics ‘” but there is a lot of gibberish.”

Kris and Adam seem to be taking very different approaches to working on their albums.

Adam is talking a lot about who he is working with, apparently had a list of producers and songwriters who he wanted to work put together before he signed the contact — and said he is working with all of them. He is working with more than one producer.

Kris hasn’t really said a lot about what is going on with his record. I think the Joe King recording session is the only one that has been in the press. But he did say that he planned to work with one producer.

7/5/09: Kris Allen hasn’t settled on a producer for his album, but he’s narrowing the choices. “It’s down to a couple,” he says. “Either one of them, they’re amazing.”

One thing he does know: He’d like to break Idol tradition and work with one producer for the entire project. “That’s what we’re shooting for,” he says, “just to get a continuity throughout the album.

“I know it’s tough to do with the Idol albums. It’s so hectic that it’s hard to get one producer for the whole album, but that would be my preference. The albums that I listen to and really appreciate, they all have that one-producer thing. Every song sounds different, but they still have that something about them that sounds the same.”

  • Zombini

He’d like to break Idol tradition and work with one producer for the entire project

Just came back from taking my daughter shopping in NYC and I almost spazzed. The Skechers store in Times Square has a HUGE digital billboard of DC on the side of the store building. Very cool and I’m almost giddy :laugh_tb:

Question for the fans from the Philippines. This article has this quote

The rockers were also well-represented. When You Look Me In The Eyes by Jonas Brothers; That’s What You Get by Paramore; Beat It by Fall Out Boy; Viva La Vida by Coldplay; The Time Of My Life by David Cook who had the most single releases out in the market at the same time than any AI winner. And we listened to them all, Dream Big, I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing, The World That I Know and Always Be My Baby.

Were all those really released as singles there??

David Cook worked with just one producer, Rob Cavallo.

So did Daughtry (Howard Benson). I don’t knows what he means about breaking Idol tradition.

  • smartcookie

As sweet as it was, it read a little like fanfic to me. /cynic

I would’ve just said “fic” without the fan. Here’s my fiction writer’s take on how easy it is:

At one point, I saw Megan and Adam standing very, very close to each other, kind of in the back, not near the table where the others had pretty much congregated, and I wondered what was up with that because, well, DUH, Adam is gayer than a lavender picnic basket on Fire Island!

But, wow, they really looked into each other. He kind of tangled his fingers around hers, and tried to nestle her closer, and she was looking away while he was staring at her really sweetly and intently, as if he were concerned about her. She tried to pull away, but he held his grip so she had to stay there, right next to him. And then she was lookiing down, really sad, and he dropped the tiniest little kiss on the top of her head and closed his eyes and pulled her right up against him, and I was like THUD, don’t they know we can see them?? It was so intimate and wow, those are too beautiful people. They looked so gorgeous silhouetted against this bright blue door (or maybe it was a curtain — I don’t know, but there was something blue behind them and it looked awesome with Adam’s eyes, which are this electric blue.)

But right after that, somebody else — Anoop, I think — called her from more over where I was, the other side of the room, and she did disentangle herself and put on a happy face and join the party.

If I didn’t know better, I would definitely think there was something going on between those those two. Adam and Megan, who would’ve thought it????

See? It’s easy. The supposed “tell” that it’s fiction is too much detail. When they’re lying, people add detail to make their stories sound real. So, you know, the dessert table and lounge and feathery soft hair that is shiny up close in the original story. All kinda over the top and unreal to my cynical eye.

I don’t know if those reports in the comments section of that story are true or not, but either way, I have decided that the supposedly quiet and shy Kris is really a big fat tease. Oh and good for Matt for booking his first solo show. He has been tweeting a lot about how he wanted to play a lot of dates in smaller venues once the AI tour ended. It sounds like he’s doing most of the planning/booking himself, rather than through any kind of manager. “And check out the sidebar on how the reporter describes Adam and all the other Idols.”

I thought that sidebar was an epic fail. The article was enjoyable enough, but is that the best she could do coming up with the one or two-word persona classifications? (Is there a word for those?) If anyone in the world should know, it’s me. I do them all the time in my job and it’s hard to be clever, not cliche and keep the style consistent. But whew, a few of those I would never have uttered aloud in a brainstorming session. It’s like she let a junior high school class do them for her.

  • lavender1960

Most artists work with one producer or one production team – like Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are a famous producer team – people in the dance/electronic/hip hop world are more likely to work with more than one producer because a lot of the hot producers in that field either don’t want to work on a whole album or they are expensive or it’s just what they do – I read an recent interview with The Matrix and one of them said they don’t like doing the whole album, they prefer working with different artists on a few songs.

Of course then if the album fails they can’t blame you, right, The Matrix?

And of course Timbaland is expensive as he boasts in his one song so for example Duran Duran worked with Timbaland for 2 songs. They loved working with Timbaland – I’ve heard the songs, the one worked the other did not.

Both pieces of music in that promo have a Simon Cowell connection. The instrumental in the beginning of the promo is “Requiem For A Tower” by Escala, a string quartet that Simon discovered and signed through BGT. And ofcourse the second piece of music is “Mad World” by our own HBIC.

I agree the Sign On San Diego sidebar is an “epic fail”:

ADAM LAMBERT: Rave-tent rocker Is she saying Adam is like the late 80′s crap performed in rave tents or just referring broadly to Dance music? Or artsy gay? And then to put WLL as his signature song under the word “rave” doesn’t make sense to me.

ALLISON IRAHETA: Go-girl belter ?? What, does this mean. Then she picks “Papa was a Rolling Stone” as a signature number?
Maybe she thinks Alison belongs on this site: http://www.gogirlmag.co.uk/

KRIS ALLEN: Cutely subversive acoustic rocker Well Kris is “cutely” but subversive is not the first word that I think of for Kris!

MATT GIRAUD: Edgy pianoman 50% right because he does play the piano and he is a man. Does wearing that hat make him “edgy”?

SCOTT MACINTYRE: Endearing pianoman 50% right because he does play the piano and he is a man. “Endearing”?

And of course Timbaland is expensive as he boasts in his one song so for example Duran Duran worked with Timbaland for 2 songs. They loved working with Timbaland – I’ve heard the songs, the one worked the other did not.

Sometimes using Timbaland for a whole album is not a good thing – his songs start to sound like one 30 minute long song – example: just take a listen to Omarion’s album.

Danny, now I definitely know where the idols are staying…oh well, not like I’ll be chasing after them….but dinner out does sound nice.

15 minutes without SPF 60 even especially at 10 am in the morning….instant sun-burn. Ouch!!

  • Q3

Oh! Anyone who lives in the Phoenix area could recognize that resort!

How can you identify a tourist in Phoenix?

In January they wear shorts and in July they sunbathe.

    Ouch is right!

  • readon

Maybe someone should twitter that he needs to take his pasty ass back inside.

  • Q3

I actually hope someone tells him. You can get a really bad burn in just 30 minutes in Phoenix in July — even in the shade. Particurlly if you are fair (or pasty) like Danny.

  • Q3

Just saw this is Rolling Stone —

And then there’s American Idol, which received too many technical and directing nominations to list. However, in the bigger categories, AI secured yet another Outstanding Reality – Competition Program nod (perhaps the magnetism of Adam Lambert will finally allow AI to win the category after losing six consecutive years to The Amazing Race) …

OK I love Adam and I know RS loves Adam, but this is going a bit too far!

  • Natasha

There was a moment where Kris and Adam were standing side by side besides the deserts table in the lounge area when they just looked at each other. Kris gave Adam this smile scrunchy eyed smile, Adam smiled back, Kris then literally threw his head into Adam’s chest in this hilarious boyish, embarrassed manner, lol. Adam kissed his head, Kris looked up, smiled AGAIN and Adam kissed his forehead. LOL. It was very, very adorable

    oh for fuck’s sake!

Man, you said it. Someone has been reading too much Kradam fan fiction. And I thought Mavid was bad last year.

  • poporange

Idk- if Adam is gay and Kris are friends their trying too hard …. ..The Kradam thing waiting for fiction about Kris leaving his wife for Adam..Its getting tiresome…OMG two guys are friends..

Kris Allen stated before think he is a little bland Blake was a better than Kris at do something w/ a song….The Adam should of won will contunue..I gather a part of the reason Kris won because mostly was the safe choice..and others did not bring it..(also being cute helped)Its like ya have to like Kris music or else …I am not a Drone…

  • Tess

Please, would someone who has twitter please tell Danny that this isn’t sunbathing territory….you can get burnt to a crisp sitting in the shade in Phoenix. I may not particularly like the guy but I know what a burn feels like.

Hey RS believes Muse is performing at the Video Music Awards because Adam is covering “Starlight”.

Um, no…Muse is performing at the VMAs because they are one of the best, and hottest, bands right now! They were great way before Adam was on AI…

As much as I love Adam, RS is WAY over the top in their love of him at times, crediting him for stuff he has little to nothing to do with. They are NOT going to have an unbiased review of his debut single/album when they drop…

Muse is probably performing at the VMAs because they had a popular song on the Twilight soundtrack. They could not have asked for any better promotion than that. Now they are very popular with the tween crowd.

Great review of Adam, san Diego Loves their boy. This bit is my favourite:

By the time he descended into the stage with a final shout of “I love you, San Diego!” Lambert had proved he’s the total package —- voice, charisma, confidence, star power and good looks (a striking mix of broad-shouldered masculinity and almost feminine beauty enhanced by his trademark guyliner and shimmery electric blue eyeshadow).

Eber and Leila must be so proud this morning.

The set highlight is Muse’s “Starlight,” a galactic high note-filled song that showcases the power, control and range of his voice.

Nice counterpoint to the comment by the “music” critic from PE.com who referred to Starlight as the worst vocal performance of the night. Umm, no. Then she later clarified her statement to say she didn’t think it was a good choice for him because if didn’t really show off his voice. Hmmm. This reviewer seems to disagree.

Of course the music guru from PE.com was the same person who noticed that Kris was the only performer drinking water on stage and thought that was critical to an understanding of his performance …

And holy God, Adam can stand to cut back on guyliner. He looks pretty ghoulish. I don’t mind what he did before, but there’s a line, man. Then again, Kris’s picture looks like he’s wearing lipstick, it may be some weird “too much color” thing going on in the picture.

I enjoy reading this report. It’s not a rash or pre-written piece. You can tell that the reporter did his homework before the show and watched it till the last song. He obviously had his focus, but did somehow elaborate the base of his opinions. He weighed the idols’ vocal performance as well as their stage presence, which makes sense to me because he was reviewing a concert not an album. He gave his comments to all performers on these two aspects.

I think so. Was Kris in a band before AI with someone he could trust?

What helped Cook — considering he was also on the AI tour while his album was being developed — is that he had his trusted former band mate and current lead guitarist, Neal Tiemann, standing in for him, working with Cavallo, ensuring that his wishes were being carried out. Neal was being “David,” when David couldn’t be there.

I am quite sure about all the non-related AI singles. As for David Cook’s, I guess so. I sometimes still hear I Don’t Want to Miss A Thing on the Radio, as well as Always be My Baby. We also have Sony-BMG here which releases AI music.

Besides the Philippines just loves AI. I was at a grocery the week after the MJ week for this season, and guess what? They’re playing Adam’s Black or White (the wail was undeniably Adam’s). No Boundaries (Kris Allen’s version) is being played here. Archie’s Touch My Hand has been on the top spot for 5 or 6 consecutive weeks, besting David Cook’s Come Back To Me (w/c I think is at #4) based on MYX, the local version of MTV (I saw the chart on tv last week or 2 weeks ago).

  • Mtlfan

I think so. Was Kris in a band before AI with someone he could trust?

Neal was being ‘David,’ when David couldn’t be there.

He self-produced (might be helped though by a local producer who noticed him on the bar scene) with 2 of his friends – bass player and a drummer.
That’s a good question. I wonder if they will be aboard when he kicks off his first solo tour

  • Trina

You and I must be ‘neighbors!’ I saw that ad in Pentagon City and was a little surprised because ‘” for me ‘” the Skechers thing was not very prominent before now.

Now that you mention it they do seem to be more prominent now. I saw the ads in malls and magazines a few months back but what I saw today was definitely the largest and most fancy yet. This particular ad I’ve been seeing occasionally on subways and bus stops in Manhattan. Wow now that I’m really looking at that one is it me or he is looking very Kris-like with the acoustic guitar and plaid shirt?

  • stargirl

I picked up a jordin sparks album. There was a pic of kris in it.It said to buy his album in november.I thought it was weird to put a ad on a R&B cd.Does this mean kris is leaning towards R&B? Since they put his pic in a R&B album???

  • Tess

I wonder if they will be aboard when he kicks off his first solo tour

Tough question…does Kris go the Daughtry route and handpick proven musicians who are looking for a gig and a long term commitment, leaving your old bandmates behind? Or does he follow in David C’s footsteps and honors the commitment he had to his old and trusted friends?

Hard to know how to handle that. There are so many good session musicians out there that you can really surround yourself with the best…but as David A. found out the best are expensive and he opted out and signed up musicians who were basically from his home state. I think so much depends, for Kris, on the type of artist he is looking to become. If he is more interested in radio play and albums then he can change up his band for recordings and tours. But if he wants to go the small venue 200plus concerts a year he needs to have a “tied to him band” that will eventually become part of the Kris Allen package.

  • Squirrely

I picked up a jordin sparks album. There was a pic of kris in it.It said to buy his album in november.I thought it was weird to put a ad on a R&B cd.Does this mean kris is leaning towards R&B? Since they put his pic in a R&B album???

That is odd, but they may have just been focusing on the Jive/ AI connection and not necessarily the genre *shrugs*

  • Sassycatz

That’s a good question. I wonder if they will be aboard when he kicks off his first solo tour

I would love to know that as well. It’ll depend on their skill level of course. (Will Kris have a band the way David does or will there just be musicians accompanying him as a solo perfomer?)

I am not sure, but Cook’s former band mates may have had to “audition.” At least, Andy probably did. Not sure about Neal, as he was already working with David’s new post AI people and there was no question about his skill level. Neal was the only one of David’s current band who actually played on David’s post Idol album. (And of course Kyle and Joey were new additions after the album was made.)

That being said, I’m assuming — if they all stick with David — that these are the guys who will play and work on the next album. They’re pretty tight at this point.

I can’t wait to see how Adam and Kris choose their respective bands. I seem to remember Daughtry was put together by auditions with members from Cali and one from I believe Tennessee (trusting my memory here). Cook as we all know welcomed back old trusted bandmates. Archie went the audition route and has two LA musicians, one from Nashville and one from Utah. Jordin has been through several different band configurations. I am particularly interested in what type of musicians Adam will choose. Most of the solo artists like Archie and Jordin usually do not keep their band members on the payroll year ’round and I wonder if Kris and Adam will do the solo thing or be part of a band like Cook and Daughtry.

  • JOJOSIE

We really don’t know what Kris or even Adam will do to promote their albums. They may even open for or share billing with someone else. I think Taylor was the first Idol to do strictly a solo tour. He had fronted a band for years so it was natural for him to go it alone. His tour was quite successful. Cook also spent lot of time in a band so he also went on a solo tour. Jive will be making the final decision on this I’m sure for Kris and RCA for Adam. Daughtry’s old band had to try out and I don’t think any made the new band. Of Taylor’s old band members, several played part-time for him as they were married and didn’t want to be on the road that long. It’ll be interesting to see how things work out.

Here’s an amazing review of the San Diego concert from the Green Valley News
and Sun. Green Valley is outside of San Diego and has a median age of 70.2!

The whole review is worth a read, but here are a few of my favorite parts:

I, along with a lot of other people of all ages and races can’t seem to get enough of this 27-year-old versatile performer who some characterize as a glam rocker. Adam is known as much for his unique style as for his three-octave vocal range. From his first performance, we knew Adam had star quality. His fiercely loyal army of fans, called Glamberts, Google him daily, download anything Adam on iTunes and call him the next Elvis.

I don’t think people expected this openly-gay Idol to have such a large base of devoted older female fans.

‘Adam is a very talented singer, is adorable, has a great personality and is going to go far,’ said Mary Thompson, 69, of Green Valley. ‘I was very surprised he didn’t win Idol and felt he should have! He was the best!’

Adam has the uncanny ability to draw people like a magnet. He allows us into his world, and shows us who he is with no filter. This makes him very appealing and makes us feel like we really know him.

Carmen Scarlott, 63, of Green Valley likes that Adam is true to himself.

‘Adam, like Elvis, has connected with people from 8 to 80,’ she said. ‘He is a showman who plays to his audience. He is phenomenally talented.’

By all accounts Adam is a polite, humble guy. He shows us it’s O.K. to be different and promotes being positive. Adam holds nothing back in terms of his performance or his personal life.

‘I am 61 and am feeling like a teen again,’ said Patricia Campana of San Diego. ‘I was part of the frenzy back in the Elvis days, loved the dramatics, the glitter, the over-the-top talent. Now with Adam it is the same, I am a love-sick groupie again… For me, he reminds me and re-inspires me that no matter that I am 61, that spirit is still alive in me.’ Also in the floor seats were San Diego residents Annette Miller, 62, attending with her daughter Stacey and granddaughter.

They have ‘been talking and blogging about Rock God (Adam) and this concert forever!’ she said. ‘What to wear, etc. I have never, ever become so infatuated, mesmerized, intoxicated with any celebrity as I have with Adam. The last time I purchased anything to listen to was 20 years ago. He is so talented, gorgeous, charismatic.’

Leather chic Toni Meurlot, 60-plus of San Diego, proclaimed, ‘I have loved Adam since I first saw him in the auditions. He’s hot, he’s smart and very funny. He is also very grounded. I love his sense of style… it parallels my own. I would not miss this concert for the world!’ .

Here’s a link to the whole article:

Q3, I was wondering why the word subversive and finally got it.

Well, I guess I’m too much a “child” of the late 60′s/early 70′s to call that subversive. Now if he burned the flag, I’d go with subversive. But — OK — the subversive guy next door who married the homecoming queen. In all seriousness, I love the fact that Kris is so laid back and normal, and at the same time is quietly passionate about his music.

Yup, Karaoke Kenny is biased — this is his back of the hand to Kris:

1: Kris Allen……probably the nicest most gracious winner in Idol history, as he KNOWS that he is not the real winner, that Adam is….which he agrees with. It is IMPOSSIBLE to follow Adam on a stage, so Kris sets out to do his best. The guy CAN sing, and he is easy on the eyes, but its just…..well……impossible. A total anti-climatic set.

That’s his opinion, fine. But I don’t believe Kris “knows” he is not “the real winner” because guess what? He DID win, no matter how you slice it. And as I think many other reviewers have expressed, he and Adam are a fine yin and yang in concert, because Adam is not the be-all end all for everyone nor is Kris……

sorry, I know it’s harkening back to the fan wars, but I can’t help it…

  • vanjess38

    Colette,
Save your breathe, don’t you know who he is,and where he belongs? He is just stupid because he forgets Kris is not going to follow Adam in concert after AI tour. Forget about that loser. People are still peaved because Adam didn’t win American Idol. What is the sense in being bitter towards Kris if he believes Adam is a superstar already, which means he doesn’t even need the idol title. OMG, peope should just give it up. Ha! Kris is in his own league, so is Adam, none of them needs the other to make up. They will all do fine after AI tour. I don’t know why people keep on comparing their styles which are totally different. Can you imagine Kris wearing glitter, eyeshadow’ sing WLL and gyrating on stage? It will lbe funny and hell will break loose. In the same way I can’t imagine Adam standing on stage, wearing plaid and ordinary jeans, with a guitar in hand, singing heartless,it will just not be him. hahaha.I don’t take people like Kenny serious. Forget about him!

  • Zombini

That’s his opinion, fine. But I don’t believe Kris ‘knows’ he is not ‘the real winner’ because guess what? He DID win, no matter how you slice it. And as I think many other reviewers have expressed, he and Adam are a fine yin and yang in concert, because Adam is not the be-all end all for everyone nor is Kris’ ¦’ ¦

sorry, I know it’s harkening back to the fan wars, but I can’t help it’ ¦

I am an Adam fan but I agree with you.
I think that the idols hometown press should make an extra effort to be unbiased, it would reflect better on them.

Having read most of the SD reviews so far, I thought they did a more balanced job than a lot of the press in previous cities.

The piece that angered recent posters is a blog, not press. And, I’d say, the blogger is pretty up front about his bias, as he begins his review with:

I preface this review by full disclosure up front. By now, you guys are SICK of me bragging about my friend Adam Lambert, and how proud of him I am. . .:

    :-)

Here’s a review from the San Diego paper — just by an intern, so it looks like they did not send a reporter to this concert. It was in the midst of San Diego Pride, the biggest event of the year in San Diego, so it’s not really totally surprising.

Lambert and Idols rock Sports Arena

For Kris fans, it contains this:

Although the predominantly female fans went crazy for Lambert, their cheering for ‘American Idol’ winner Kris Allen, who sang Kanye West’s ‘Heartless’ and Bill Withers’ ‘Ain’t No Sunshine,’ was just as loud.

Also, here’s a bit more about Adam’s album from MTV.com:

Adam Lambert To Fuse Classic-Rock Sound With ‘Dancier’ Vibe On Debut

Just like during his “Idol” journey, Lambert is planning to shake up tempos and styles on the yet-untitled LP.

“It goes back and forth,” he said. “There’s some ballads, there’s some uptempo, there’s some songs that are a little bit more straightforward, current pop. There are some songs that are more dance; there are some songs that are straight rock.”

Don’t know if this was posted, but you can definitely hear Adam singing the ending of Mad World in this Flash Forward promo.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5XMKW33u54

Hey, BestAI! Thanks so much for posting this! I actually put that up last night :smile_wp: Yea, first youtube vid for me!

Sorry for the bad quality (I don’t have the tech to transfer directly from tv to computer, because I’m a little new to this) but I was so frustrated with not being able to catch the Flash Forward promo with Adam singing, that I decided to watch parts of the British Open (well, actually record it and watch it on fast forward) to try and catch it. Sure enough, there it was!

Should be getting more heavy rotation on ABC – Yeah, Adam!

Sounds good wrt the album! I can’t wait for this to come out! Ryan Tedder, iirc mentioned a bit of a Tears for Fears influence as well – yea!

He’s upfront about his bias. I fail to see what the problem is. Its a blogger’s review, he isnt asking for your approval or agreement

Here’s a HQ YouTube of FlashForward with Adam.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x002MSETJfU

And, yes, this appears to be the one they are going to use on air. 1.00 minute; Adam starts around 0.30.
There is also a 15 second spot with a sample of the Mad World music, no Adam vocal.

My mistake, I should have read the whole blog. I agree that there is nothing to get upset about

I totally agree with the above posts that “some just can’t get over it”. This is the nature of AI. Last season, David Cook wasn’t supposed to win, but did and to this day (over a year later) some DA fans are still pissed.

The vast majority of Adam fans are “over it”. But some people will never let it go. It’s been over 6 years, and some Clay fans aren’t “over it”.

Everyone is biased. There is no objective review. lol. I thought that was common sense. We see and hear music through our own eyes and ears. Just because someone see’s Adam as the “real” winner or likes him better doesn’t make them bitter or less worthy of an opinion as anyone else. Every comment on this blog is biased… LOL In fact, I actually respect the guy for saying up front he’s biased. Seriously, the way the Idols placed on the show doesn’t mean they aren’t going to be liked more or less by their fans. I have a friend who LOVES Matt. Even though he only placed 5th doesn’t matter to her. She is going to the concert to see just him.

Seriously, Kris fans are as bad or worse than the Adam fans.

  • Tess

Personally, I can’t wait until Fall and the tour is over and Adam, and Kris, and Allison can head out into the real world. And I hope at sometime they will stop being introduced as American Idol winner, runner-up, or finalist. Whenever I hear those words associated with any of the former Idols I totally cringe. I think after several million albums competing against other recording artists that the words American Idol could just fade into oblivion.

And yes it would be nice if fans could stop the competition but they aren’t and won’t. The should haves and could haves will always be alive and well in Idoldom.

But then media and press is always strange. I still read introductions like “former boy bander and disney star” for Justin Timberlake…what the fuck. And on the radio Fergie and Gwen still get linked to their old groups even when doing a solo number. And I heard the other day…”Sting, lead singer of the Police”, and that was an ohmy moment.

Labels…..just have to ignore them or they will drive you crazy. Every singer has to carry their career baggage along with them.

Hey Squirelly not familiar with Omarion, Timbaland worked well on Nelly’s album that hit big and I have to check and see if he worked on the whole thing, that was my impression from what Nelly said and many of her songs are gorgeous songs that you would not think Timbaland had anything to do with, she has some wonderful ballads on that album and he did some great stuff for Justin Timberlake and I love his own album where he colloborated with many different artists. He and Missy Elliot together were dynamite.

Timbaland however might just be running out of ideas and needs yet another shift to challenge him – he said hip hop was boring him so he worked with Nelly and Justin and he was saying he wanted to work with some rock artists as his next challenge – I believe Duran Duran was the first foray not that I would call Duran Duran rock per se and it didn’t really work out in terms of producing a hit – you win some you lose some – the problem with bragging about hot you are is there are always 10 new hot producers on your tail.

I imagine that the reason it looks like, from the list posted above, that many Idols have worked with more producers which is not the norm is a combination of the rush to get that album out by November, easier to do that with several producers working on the various songs I would imagine and because 19 has the resources to pull that off. I personally think one producer for all if not most of the album gives an album a cohesiveness that you just don’t get with using several producers and I dare say that most of the albums that become classics over time have been one producer or one producer team, like Lanois and Eno on many U2 albums. It just may be that for the artists or fans of certain kinds of music, that is not something that is important or those artists through their own participation or writing lyrics ensure some kind of cohesiveness in spite of a number of producers or make sure they have one producer who gathers it all and put a cohesive stamp on it in the final mix. My guess is Lady GaGa’s album has a cohesiveness to it just by hearing the singles so far but it seems to me she had a lot of control in its production herself.

2 tweets from Allison and Kris:

KrisAllen4RealI hear it’s like 140.35 degrees in Arizona. Yay! If you decide to throw ice on stage…..I wouldn’t be mad. I know it sounds dangerous.

Allison4Realzzz had an awesome photo shoot today!! sorry i haven’t been updatin’ u guys!! you know how lazy i am!! well Arizona!! cant wait fo tmrw!! whooo

    From the GV news article:

I don’t think people expected this openly-gay Idol to have such a large base of devoted older female fans.

The reporter never went to an Idol concert, she doesn’t know what to expect.
THe idol audience is getting older and older every year, these old women (refered pejoratively as cougar or frauen) tend to support one of the guys that are in the competition (last year the two davids or this year Adam and Kris), nothing new about that at all.

  • jpfan

“And I hope at sometime they will stop being introduced as American Idol winner, runner-up, or finalist.”

    This will never happen.

And the “traditional Idol fan” is a middle aged or older lady. That started w/Clay Aiken and seems to be the norm for the guys. I think the average Idol fan is a woman in her 40s. And the median age goes up every year as fewer children/teens watch the show.

Sure, the demographics of Idol really have shifted older. In January 2005, the median viewer was 35. Last year, the figure had crept up to 38.2. This year it hit 40. That makes Idol about average since the US population has an average age of 38. (When you adjust for children <2 years old the average age is over 41.)

The GV writer’s point isn’t so much that there were older fans at the concert. Her point was that it was surprising to see so many women over 60 from Green Valley who were Adam fans. Green Valley is a retirement community outside San Diege with an average age of 70. It is a conservative Republican area. They’re not just avid fans of an AI alum; they are avid fans of an openly gay performer who until recently was a headliner in the Zodiac Club Show. I believe that was her main point.

  • lavender1960

I think people underestimate older ladies, first of all, how many older women grew up in the era of free love and drugs in the late 1960s and 1970s – I am sure many boomer women are less conservative than many younger women and seen and done more things and are more open minded than given credit for. And San Francisco was not only one of the major meeting places for the Summer and Summers of Love, but also the gay mecca. I bet some of those ladies were marching in protests in the days of Harvey Milk.

Remember the show with Michael Fox where his parents were the liberal hippies and he was the conservative kid embarrassed by them.

I have always seen California as being a mecca for more liberal minded types [in Canada that is British Columbia, something about the West Coast bwah] – see Berkeley but having met some more conservative Californians I guess California is an interesting mix of liberal and conservative. Even then the conservative Californians I met were more fiscally conservative than morally conservative – in fact they are pretty wild which is why I was surprised at their otherwise conservative stances. Which just goes to prove that small “c” conservative and liberal mean different things to different people and as Chris Rock said rather adeptly most people are liberal on some issues and conservative on others, few people are totally one or the other on all issues. American need the middle third party, bwah.

And let’s not forget who all the fans of Liberace were and come on, even though he was in the closet, sort of, you don’t think 90 per cent of his female fans knew but couldn’t care less?

Though a lot more men are fans of Idol than one would think – probably more in the line however that American Idol is a family affair and actually it is a nice warm fuzzy thought that whole families are getting together to watch American Idol and perhaps discussing music and other issues along that line.

Umm. I love Kradam and all, but I’m not really enjoying this fan’s fantasies cloaked in pseudo-analytical gibberish. She takes the two recent fan “stories” and tries to break them down part by part and find corroborating evidence for each. Okay, maybe I can see Adam waiting for Kris by the door and a cheeky comment from Kris. But the second one, about the forehead kiss? Uh, no, didn’t happen. And these are her/his conclusions:

    My Kradam Feelings

I feel that what has initially started as an innocent friendship between them has steadily progressed into something more. Perhaps initially it was just an unrequited love on Adam’s part (I refuse to believe that it is a crush since I think Adam was trying to make light of the situation) and playful teasing on Kris part. However, I think now, it is has progressed into a two-way relationship.

Supposedly, Matt, Danny and Michael are trying to run interference and create a distraction (the Kratt butt swatting incident) to protect Adam and Kris from the public finding out about their supposed relationship? Michael, really? In the words of Adam, this fan needs to get a life! LOL
