Simon Cowell picks Adam Lambert andà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦who? (Danny Gokey!) for Idol final

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ still has five singers left in the competition. But acid-tongued judge Simon Cowell has already decided who he would like to see in the final round next month.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d ike to see Adam (Lambert) and Danny (Gokey) in the final because they are the best two singers,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Cowell told reporters at a TV industry event in Los Angeles on Friday.

Susan Boyle on à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Americaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Got Talentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢? NBC Hopes So

NBC is hoping the massive publicity for “Britain’s Got Talent” superstar Susan Boyle will help turn “America’s Got Talent” into a bigger hità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ possibly by having her appear on the U.S. show.

“America’s Got Talent” has established a major following over the last few years, joining CBS’ “Big Brother” and Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance” as the summer season’s strongest performers.

But the moment Ms. Boyle opened her mouth, NBC reality czar Paul Telegdy started having dreams of his ownà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ dreams of higher ratings and more buzz for the American version of “Talent.”

“The timing is great,” Mr. Telegdy told TVWeek, joking that Ms. Boyle might have exploded “a bit closer to our premiere” on June 23.

Real Good Pop Singing, American Idol-Style

If there’s a single television series that’s never gone begging for coverage, it’s American Idol. Were the column inches devoted to the annual reality TV competition laid end to end, they’d undoubtedly stretch from here to Alpha Centauri.

Yet it seems to me that most of the compulsive typing focuses on one two-pronged aspect of the show: which contestant is pulling ahead (currently Adam Lambert) and which has fallen behind (Allison Iraheta bottom-threeing again!?). Much of the blah-blahing centers on the voting and predictability (or shock) of the successive eliminations. Much of the yammering also revolves around how the judges are trending — if you can decipher what they’re saying.

Lythgoe: Cowell won’t leave Idol

Simon Cowell won’t leave American Idol, according to the show’s former producer Nigel Lythgoe.

The Idol judge recently said he would leave the popular show if it slipped from the top spot in the ratings, saying he would go “nuts” if he did it for another five years.

But speaking at a BritWeek champagne reception in LA, Nigel suggested: “I don’t think Simon will leave.”

He added: “It really depends on what’s put in front of him.

“I think cash-wise – not just cash-wise, you can do other deals.

“If he’s allowed to be given other shows to worry about and get on with, incrementally it would certainly be worth his while.”

He added that Idol bosses could make it worth Simon’s while to “not bother” with an American version of the X Factor – something he is not allowed to do under his current Idol deal.

Simon Cowell to Susan Boyle: “Get yourself together”

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Television’s Simon Cowell said on Friday he was embarrassed at his initial reaction to British singing sensation Susan Boyle, but warned that just because she is a hit with fans, she is not a winner yet.

Cowell, the creator and a judge on “Britain’s Got Talent,” said he was fed up with stories about the hair, eyebrows and cats of the never-married 47-year-old Boyle, and he urged her to focus now on winning the television talent competition.

“She has got four weeks to prepare for the biggest night of her life, and she has got to sing better than she sang before with all those expectations on her. But it could all go horribly wrong for her because there are so many other distractions,” Cowell told TV reporters in Los Angeles.

I’d put Danny and Matt tied for crappy singing, but Danny loses by default because he is louder and makes my ears bleed more. He also sounds like ass on studio recordings. Kris isn’t exactly a dynamic or interesting vocalist, but at least he doesn’t continually reach for notes that he can’t reach, thrust his pelvis at me, or think he’s Justin Timberlake. I think he’s better than Matt and Danny combined and I don’t even like him that much.

Adam and Allison final two, please.

IMO, In terms of voices this is, by far and without any contest, the weakest season. There’s Adam and that’s about it. The others have pretty average voices and really haven’t showed much range.
I like Allison’s and Kris styles more, and that’s what gets me about them, but I don’t think they sing better than Danny, all three of them are kinda in the same line for me. Matt is not that far too.

  • KrazeeK120

I can’t believe no one knew about this, but Adam hired little aliens to mess with the sound in the studio so it would make Danny (and only Danny) sound screechy and off key in every single one of his performances.

Seriously…it is completely beyond any kind of comprehension how anyone can say that Danny is a good singer or that he deserves to be in the final. He sounds like horrible, screechy, off key karaoke. Every. single. week. At least the other 4 grasp the concept of making songs “your own.” And 3 of those 4 sing really great most of the time. And I’m no salesperson, but I can’t see how Danny could possibly be more marketable than Kris OR Allison. Yet everyone wants to push him into the finale over either of them. UGHHHHH!!! This season is beyond frustrating.

Kris is a shitty singer…but he is very creative …talented with arrangements to highlight what he can do and hide what he can’t. Matt Girard is a better singer and so are Adam and Danny. Allison not so much…but she does have him beat with her tone of voice. Kris doesnt have a unique voice, a unique look, or a unique story…he is just a normal guy…since when does the average joe win American idol?

  • ross

Just bringing some Danny love. Kris can only tell stories. Danny and Adam have the best voices.

I like Kris’s voice better than anyone else’s in the competition. I don’t think this is supposed to be Star Search. It isn’t about who can hit the most high notes or sing the loudest. It’s about finding a recording star. If this guy keeps on doing what he’s doing on the show, I’d buy every album he ever makes. He’s obviously a musician who knows what he’s doing, and he reaches me on an emotional level, whether his songs are moving or fun — to me, he connects. And what he does with his voice reminds me of what jazz singers do — he’s innately musical, a natural. (jmho!)

As for telling stories, Paul Simon and Bob Dylan “can only tell stories,” and I think they’ve done okay.

I also like Adam, I’d like it to be Kris/Adam for final two.

  • Lys

He is just a normal guyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦since when does the average joe win American idol?

Well, that’s kind of the whole point of the show, isn’t it? Plucking ordinary people out of obscurity and giving them a chance to shine? I know, I know… that’s not usually how the show ends up working… but I think that’s how it was meant to be. :)

Kris doesn’t have the strongest voice this season, that’s for sure. But he knows his limitations and how best to work within them, he knows exactly who he is as an artist, and he’s the only one this season who’s ever really ‘grabbed’ me emotionally.

  • karrahbrooke

since when does the average joe win American idol?

Once upon a time, that was kind of the point of American Idol. Giving the average joes a chance.

  • primeminister

Setting Gokey up to be the shock boot perhaps?

  • Natasha

Although I’m not a fan I have to admit that Danny is a better singer than Kris so I agree with Simon on that point.

I thought maybe they were test-ballooning Kris as a possible finalist with Adam with that Enquirer story but I have to admit that an Adam/Danny finale seems weightier if they want some sort of cultural shakedown.

I like Kris better than I like Danny on a personal level but as long as Adam is in the finale, I’m happy.

  • blissful

I agree with Simon. Danny has better, IMHO, good tone, range, and obviously power than Kris and Matt, but Kris uses his better to interpret songs (he also chooses or gets better songs approved). Danny has been going the power route and lost much of the subtleness in his audition and hollywood rounds. Matt’s been cracking (especially his voice) when performing and Allison is demonstrating less versatility. But it’s just his (and my) opinion, and it really doesn’t affect the voting itunes downloads. In my case, I’ve bought Kris’s songs and one of Adam’s but none of Danny’s. He’s not singing the stuff I want to buy.

Danny’s has talent, but it’s not translating into marketability as well the others.

  • blissful

Arrgh, I can’t edit all my grammatical errors in the my previous post :/

  • wordnerdarchie

In my opinion, Adam has the best voice. However, I have not yet sent any votes his way. A few of my votes have been cast for people whose back stories have grabbed me and that I felt needed the votes in order to stay in.

That being said, I thought I’d respond to the discussion of who is the best singer/performer with the following statistical info from “What Not To Sing”, regarding how the contestants have done based on that site’s rating criteria. I find it fascinating.

If we were to end the season today, and use WNTS’s scores as a way of determining the winner, here is how the standings would be. (Average score is in parenthesis.)

    1. Adam (73.75)
    2. Allison (71.00)
    3. Kris (68.13)
    4. Danny (56.13)
    5. Matt (50.38) or (52.67 if you count the wildcard round)

Just for fun, I also compared the stats for season 7, ending it at the same point. However, they had sung 10 televised performances post Hollywood, while this season has sung only 8 (except for Matt). *By throwing out the high and low score for each to use the same # of performances as season 8 (sometimes done in statistical analysis) we would have the second set of scores.*

    1. David C. (71.00)…*(74.13)*
    2. David A. (61.9)…*(63.75)*
    3. Jason (54.9)…*(56.25)*
    4. Brooke (53.7)…*(54.88)*
    5. Syesha (53.3)…*(52.65)*

Now you might say, wow, those stats don’t match the final standings for spots 3-5. True, so I looked ahead to the next performances and found that Syesha had a better than average performance night on Top 5 (2 song ave. 59). and appeared to move into 3rd in front of Jason (2 song ave. 22) & Brooke (2 song ave. 39.5).

So I feel that looking at these statistics could give us some indication as to how things will pan out, dependent on future performances.

    Summary:
Adam is definitely in the driver’s seat.
Matt’s days appear to be numbered.
Danny seems to also be a goner.
The battle is between Allison and Kris for second.

Yes, I’m a number nerd and I need help. :help_tb:

  • Tatiana

I feel there are only two possible reasons for the over-pimpage of Gokey:

    1. Set up the angel-vs-devil finale with Adam, ensuring Adam wins by a landslide. Gokey has started getting so much backlash he will not pick up new fans in the next few weeks from the other fallen contestants.

    2. Set up the shock boot of Danny. Hope his fans are becoming complacent and have him leave in 4th

I hope it is #2 because I feel Allison and Kris deserve to make Top 3 so much more than Gokey. An Allison/Adam finale would be great, and really he is so far ahead his win would still be assured (if iTunes and the search article hold up). I think TPTB may scheme against Kris for the same reasons they did against Castro – he has the upset potential. Thing is, Kris’s style is not suited to producing a middling album in 4 months. TPTB would likely ruin his sound. Adam, though, can sing dance-tinged powerpop (Lord Gaga crossed with Mika) – much easier to throw together IMO. I’m sure they’re already working on the songs. His fame could go international in warp speed. Allison has way more potential than the votes and iTunes purchases are reflecting – if this was an MTV show she’d probably be leading the pack. She could easily have a hit record with a sound that combines Pink, Avril, and Demi…

Part of me though hates these manipulations so much, as my favorites in the past have been the victims. Wouldn’t it be hilarious if in the end among all these people with so much potential GOKEY ends up winning, due to backfiring over-pimpage? Ha!!

  • ppwars

Yes, I’m a number nerd and I need help.

…well! you are ready for AIA 12 steps! Acknowledging that there is a problem is the beginning of recovery. Think you can begin therapy before season’s end?

  • sma11ie

Danny has better, IMHO, good tone, range, and obviously power than Kris and Matt, but Kris uses his better to interpret songs (he also chooses or gets better songs approved). Danny has been going the power route and lost much of the subtleness in his audition and hollywood rounds. Mattà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s been cracking (especially his voice) when performing and Allison is demonstrating less versatility.

I agree with this. I preface this by saying that I generally can’t stand Danny and think Kris’ performances have probably been the best this season, BUT I think Danny has a better voice than Kris. I disagree with someone upthread who said Kris is a shitty singer, though. I think he is a great singer with a mediocre and not-very-unique voice. Danny has a great voice but sings badly– he overreaches, picks horrible arrangements, and/or screams. On tone and voice, my preferences are Matt, Danny, Allison, Kris, Adam. But based on what they do with their voice, I’d say my rankings are Kris, Adam, Matt, Allison, Danny. Matt just slightly edges Allison because he’s demonstrated more musicality at times.

Yikes, another considerationà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦If Allison ends up in 2nd, my bet is she goes to Jive. Does this mean Jive drops Archie?

Well, they didn’t drop Jordon when they signed Archie. If the second album does well, I think he’ll be fine.

  • jjcoolgal891

Yikes, another considerationà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦If Allison ends up in 2nd, my bet is she goes to Jive. Does this mean Jive drops Archie?

Why the heck would they drop Archie. Right now Archie is the only male giving them anything right now. Plus Archie has a much bigger fanbase than Allison, so why would they give him up for Allison? Doesn’t make any sense to me. If Jive were to drop anyone for Allison it would be Lesley Roy,the other female rocker who right now isn’t giving them much right now.

  • Tatiana

    Gah, that’s a big if. Here’s to the Adam/Gokey finale!!!!!!! :drunk_tb:

  • blissful

I’m thinking if they sign Allison, and Jordon’s new record tanks, she’s the one in trouble rather than Archie.

  • amiroamor

Can’t agree that Danny has a better voice. I finally had the *courage* to listen to Danny’s Jesus, Take The Wheel studio version on the tube. It was bad, if not horrible. I prefer Kris’ tone and vocal purity in any songs he has recorded compared to Danny’s.

  • blissful

I can’t see Gokey reaching the finals he’s lost his momentum while Kris and Allison are hitting their stride. It’s going to be a toss up between Matt and Gokey to see who goes out first. But it all can change based on their performances — but if they continue their current track, Gokey/Matt will be gone sooner than later.

I think he’s losing his voice (maybe that’s why he and Lil didn’t sing solos in the group sing).

  • Tatiana

Well, it would be plausible if they think she has more potential with the Top 40 audience. Jordin didn’t have a big fanbase either but her first two singles have done better on Top 40 than Archie’s has. He’s having trouble getting the Program Directors on his side. I really think it’s an image thing, which is why they’ve shifted to a Disney approach for him – which is a shame. I’ve just watched his performances from Edinburgh and didn’t see anything Disney about it. If anything he is a one-man boyband. His image may well end up quite different in the rest of the world than in the US, and his international success could protect him from being dropped, IMO.

eta: I’m happy for Archie that he’s getting an opportunity with McFly to introduce himself to audiences who don’t have preconceived notions about him. Interesting choice: his six-song set list only includes one ballad (ALTNOY). The rest are uptempo – no Archie on piano or on a stool. I’m sure its for high energy to warm up the crowd, but it also ensures he doesn’t get stuck with the “ballad boy” tag right away in the UK. Smart move.

  • CSFan

Simon is just pimping Gokey as part of the final two so that he knows he’s dragging someone along with Adam who is going to get slaughtered at the finale. It’s the same tactic he used with Cook and Archuleta. He knew DC was going to trounce the kid and he hasn’t shown an ounce of interest in DA since. It will be the same with Gokey.

  • Kris

I don’t think Jordan or David would be dropped for Allison.

  • jjcoolgal891

Actually Crush has done better than Tattoo has done, and without Chris Brown on No Air, that wouldn’t have done any better than A Little Too Not Over You. I see how they are directing him towards Disney but I feel that is more because they see who Archie’s demographic is and they know going Disney will give them that.

  • CSFan

Jive will drop DA if his second album tanks (doesn’t go gold). And unless radio starts embracing him again that is a very likely scenario. But he’s got at least another year and a half or two years before that plays out.

The Browns might be active on the first day, but also at the mercy of the preceding four teams. And what will happen there seems as unpredictable as Adam Lambert’s next American Idol performance.

This quote from the online site of “The Cleveland Plain Dealer” referring to the upcoming football team and the NFL draft. Guess Adam is more widely known than a lot of people thought/think.

Per Jive and who should stay and who should go (aren’t those song lyrics) you should check out their Artist list. I’ve never heard of half the people signed on their label (can you tell I’m not a music geek). I didn’t know that it was one in one out on a label….I always thought it was just about how much the “bottom line” was.

What is it with Idol and the “so-and-so is gonna get dropped” conversations! LOL. It comes around every few weeks like clockwork. We need some fresh news around here. If not, next it will be “so-and-so will never sell a record in the real world”. Hee.

For the record, I don’t think anyone from season 7 is getting dropped anytime soon. I agree it will depend what happens with the next album.

I think Danny can sing. He has the potential to be great. But he hasn’t done the things that would take him from good to great, so for me that’s why he feels like such a disappointment. I would rather his spot had gone to someone who was actually going to use the opportunity to evolve, if that were the case.

Tom Bergeron gave Susan Boyle some pretty good advice, I hope she takes it.

I know we fans give Chris B all the credit for No Air, but I doubt the label splits hairs like that. The song was and is a massive hit. It made Jordin a household name and was nominated for a Grammy. That song along pretty much solidified Jordin’s success for her debut, and after that One Step at a Time was a pretty big hit too and got tons of radio airplay. I don’t think Touch my Hand will unfortunately. I love the song but don’t know that it fits in with the junk they’re playing now on pop.

David has another card to play though – he has proven himself a strong live performer and a big draw for concert ticket sales. I’ll be interested to see how this tour with Demi Lovato pans out…I remember way way back in the day a tour where NKOTB started a summer tour opening for Tiffany…by mid-way through the tour she was opening for THEM. If David ends up drawing more/equal sales to Demi, wouldn’t be surprised to see the billing change, (eta: at least to a double bill rather than David as “special guest”)

    Summary:
Adam is definitely in the driverà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s seat.
Mattà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s days appear to be numbered.
Danny seems to also be a goner.
The battle is between Allison and Kris for second.

Another number nerd weighing in here to note that actually, Adam and Allison are closer together in those numbers than Kris and Allison. It’s only by a hair’s breadth (0.12), but that would suggest that the primary battle is between Adam and Allison for first, and the secondary battle is between Allison and Kris for third!

If only it’d work out that way! But those are just numbers, and I don’t think Allison, Kris, or anyone has a snowball’s chance in Adam’s Ring of Fire of beating him. :wink_wp:

Didn’t all of Jordin’s singles reach the Top 10 on Pop? Even before No Air Tattoo was huge.

jjcoolgal – you’re right, my bad. The song and video are probably more to excite the tweens for the summer tour. Maybe they’ve given up on airplay? Perhaps that’s best, for this album anyway – why beat a dead horse? Hope they let him record Zero Gravity for Album #2!

I like Adam and I see him winning, though I like Dannys voice too. Theres something different about it, if he sings the right song and doesnt overreach, his voice is good, its the kind of vocie that I would listen too and am older fan and I think thats mostly Dannys audience, the 20s and up. My concern on Adam not winning is that I think AI8 or TPTB tries to define what or who they want to win on a certain Season, so they had Cook last year as a rocker guy and if Adam wins, are they going to market him as rock/pop same as Cook and they would be in the same label plus they already have Daughtry? Do we see them investing in another rock/pop artist? The 3 of them competing in the same market for the same label? Am thinking that AI might want someone different this year that they would add to the roster of talent they have now and aiming for a different market?? just my thoughts….

Danny is second to Adam in youtube searches

“Looking at YouTube keyword referrals, “adam lambert” is now the #16 highest referring search keyword to YouTube, up from 25th in this blog’s prediction post #1. There are currently 118 different search terms containing “adam lambert” that show up in the top 100,000 driving traffic to YouTube. To put this in perspective, the terms “american idol 2009″ and “american idol” rank #126 and #162 respectively. The next current Idol Season 8 contestant from a YouTube perspective is “danny gokey” at #1,697 and 14 total search terms; followed by “allison iraheta” at #2,088 and 4 total search terms; then “kris allen” at #6,943 and 7 total search terms; and “matt giraud” at #11,408 and 7 total search terms in the top 100,000. Since YouTube has become the #2 Search Engine, these findings take on increased importance.

  • weareallinnocent

^^Another thing that strikes me about those WNTS numbers (and I’m no numbers nerd btw, so there’s that lol) — Cook was FAR ahead of Archie, much more so than Adam from the next competitor down, and in fact, more than the gap between Adam and the third in line. So, “Adam is definitely in the driver’s seat,” it’s true, but compared to Cook’s 18-wheeler (with a one-seat trailer) Adam appears to be driving a Mini-Coop! :-)

  • cay

    Danny is second here also

“Adam Lambert drives more traffic to americanidol.com than any other contestant… by a mile. “Adam Lambert” is the #4 search term, and he has 4 of the top 30. Only “Danny Gokey” also has a spot in the top 30 at #11. If the rankings were to be determined by americanidol.com visits referred bv search engines, you’d have to stack the contestants this way:
    1. Adam Lambert
    2. Danny Gokey
    3. Matt Giraud
    4. Kris Allen
    5. Allison Iraheta

juliec – Adam isn’t a traditional rocker like Cook and Daughtry and they won’t be competing for the same audience, although it will probably overlap some.

Adam fits into a new style of pop rocker like what Pink, Britney and Lady Gaga are doing. For example, this is the advertisement for Pink’s upcoming US tour

“Now P!nk brings her Funhouse to select US markets!
Part rock show, part club night, part cabaret, part Cirque Du Soleil, the Funhouse tour has to be seen to be believed.

Cook and Daughtry probably won’t add the cabaret and Cirque Du Soleil to their shows!! There is room for many artists, and I do recognize that Kris is very appealing to some people. However, to me, I think Idol has been all about finding the best singing voice and I think, with 1 exception, they have done that. I think the best singer deserves to win, but I’m not losing sleep over the fact that Kris might win. I do want him happy. I just want an Adam funhouse tour. And for him to blog, have myspace and be done with Idol.

  • lavender1960

“most of the compulsive typing focuses on one two-pronged aspect of the show: which contestant is pulling ahead (currently Adam Lambert) and which has fallen behind (Allison Iraheta bottom-threeing again!?). Much of the blah-blahing centers on the voting and predictability (or shock) of the successive eliminations. Much of the yammering also revolves around how the judges are trending à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ if you can decipher what theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re saying.”

Gee could it be because it is a singing COMPETITION?

And this is precious coming from Huffington Post where during presidential elections all the pundits are more concerned about the polls, how many red and blue states and swing states and primaries and electoral college seats rather than the issues.

  • lavender1960

Someone mentioned that Adam is the most searched contestant on iTunes in Idol history but ah didn’t AI just start posting performances for download on iTunes last year?

  • Tatiana

Well what made me think of who might potentially get dropped in the first place was at the end of Season 7 it seemed some droppage went on to make room for the Season 7 peeps…for example, Arista dropped Blake, 19 dropped Jordin, and I think there were a few others too right around the same time (McPhee maybe?)..so it got me thinking what might happen to the Season 7 peeps as a result of the labels/mgmt companies wanting to fit the Season 8 finalists on their rosters?

In any case I don’t think Archie has any immediate worries and if he were to get dropped by Jive I think Hollywood Records (Disney) would snap him up in a heartbeat.

  • SpenserJ

I went to the touring version of WICKED last night and kept imagining Adam as Fyero. I saw it on Broadway and that Fyero was MUCH better.

This is an AMAZING marketing article. Says Adam is the most searched itunes contestant (former or current) from Idol. And some other things. Hmm.. I may for the first time think Adam could pull it out if his fans keep this up.

Am I the only one who finds the logic in this flawed? Of course he is the most searched. He is the huge front runner and EVERYONE on tv and news is talking about him and his sexuality!!!

Yikes, another considerationà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦If Allison ends up in 2nd, my bet is she goes to Jive. Does this mean Jive drops Archie?

They would be crazy to drop David. He has been going nonstop since AI and with music sales, merchandise, and especially concert sales, he is making them tons of money. Also, I am pretty sure JIVE does not spend as much money on their people as other labels. Lesley Roy isn’t that well known and they keep her and other lesser well knowns on the label. In SLC, one of the openers for David (can’t rememer her name) was also from JIVE and I had never even heard of her.

Jive will drop DA if his second album tanks (doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t go gold). And unless radio starts embracing him again that is a very likely scenario. But heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s got at least another year and a half or two years before that plays out.

It seems to me like there are many artists who aren’t on top 40 every day, who are still big. Also, it is rumored that David’s next album is aiming to be more top 40 friendly. I know David won’t do garbage, so I am not worried about that. If it is anything like Zero Gravity, I think it will be great.

David has another card to play though – he has proven himself a strong live performer and a big draw for concert ticket sales. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be interested to see how this tour with Demi Lovato pans outà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦I remember way way back in the day a tour where NKOTB started a summer tour opening for Tiffanyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦by mid-way through the tour she was opening for THEM. He IS amazing live. The energy!!! I don’t think a switch will happen though because the tour was started as a Demi tour and it is funded by Hollywood records.

I almost broke down and got tickets, although people said they were gone in about 1 minute or less. But by the time I spent money on gas, hotel, the tickets, etc. it would be quite expensive, and I don’t want to turn into a groupie. I settled for going to a professional soccer game in my area on June 5th, where he is singing the national anthem and then doing a short concert afterwards.

jcoolgal – youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re right, my bad. The song and video are probably more to excite the tweens for the summer tour. Maybe theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve given up on airplay? An Adam Funhouse or Circus tour would be awesome. I almost hope he doesn’t win so that he can steer his own career a bit more. RCA and 19 being stuck with Hokey Gokey would almost be poetic justice.

The more I listen to Kris Allen’s “To Make You Feel My Love” the more I think he should infuse his pop with a strong hint of country and make a run in that direction. I think he’d have a better shot as a country/pop artist than if he tries to compete with Matt Nathanson, Josh Kelley, etc.

  • lavender1960

Record companies rarely if ever let artists develop a fanbase anymore. Not like the old days. Even in the old days they weren’t terribly patient.

Nowadays if you don’t pass some kind of sales threshhold, it’s sayonara. However yes this is not to say that there are not other labels out there willing to take a risk on you again if you are lucky. Look at Mariah Carey. Bwah.

Whether that’s 500,000 units or 250,000 or less than that of course seems to depend on the label, indy labels seem to have a bit more patience, and it might depend on how much they spent on you, or maybe they look at your global sales in some cases of more international artists. Ability to bring in tour revenue might also be a factor, depending on whether the record company is getting any return on that and I would argue if you have an artist who is bring in bigger and bigger crowds on tour even if the sales numbers don’t meet expectations a record company might be inclined to keep them on for one more album.

But then I might be naive and the reality is even harsher than I thought.

Now did 19 Management drop Jordin or Jordin dropped 19 or they mutually parted ways, I am always dubious of the characterization “dropped” but Jordin is still with Jive Records, and 19 are hardly the only game in town for management.

One could see that Jordin for example could see her career wasn’t going to get the attention it required once the focus was on the Davids or there were disagreements on direction or another management team was just offering something better, which is always going to happen, Idol or not.

  • ppwars

I am mystified. Where are Allison’s votes! Where have the votes of all the mom’s, and grandmom’s, and a reasonable % of boppers gone! Well, we all know that, and it’s a shame. Not that the front runner isn’t very deserving. He is. But I wonder how many have voted based on hormones rather than hearts, conception rather than conviction. Enough to assure Alli 2nd place otherwise.

It’s a shame that Adam and Allison had to run the same year. And they were both compelled; Adam by age and career necessity; Allison because of her dreams . Adam will win, and enhance his career; Alli wins whenever she goes out, career wise; she couldn’t have garnered more interest had she competed and won at a later date. The other contestants also need a career boost.

I am pleased that the child is a deserving second. There goes my vote. I am always for the child. Admittedly, I vote my heart.

In the not distant past, I saw so many children who have no future that, given a chance, would have found respectable places in society. Instead, I saw children who ,in some cases, committed felonies in order to assure sentencing to the detention center. Many of them are now in the penitentiary. This is the why of it.

Of course, all of the justifications that I question are exactly what makes an idol. BUT, come on! Throw a few votes to the kid! She is exactly the type Idol, literally, troubled kids need. And she is deserving.

I agree with Simon. Danny has better, IMHO, good tone, range, and obviously power than Kris and Matt, but Kris uses his better to interpret songs (he also chooses or gets better songs approved). But ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just his (and my) opinion, and it really doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t affect the voting itunes downloads. In my case, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve bought Krisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s songs and one of Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s but none of Dannyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not singing the stuff I want to buy.

Totally agree with this. I like Danny and think he has a good voice but am not interested in most of the songs he’s chosen. He needs to take a step back and find a way to interpret his songs better, more subtly as you said, instead of just barreling through them. It’s not working for me even though I prefer his voice over many of the others.

Kris has turned out to be my favorite because he’s chosen better songs and done more with his “weaker” voice. His recordings are the only ones I’ve bought this season.

  • gingerly

How can Simon say heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s one of the best 2 singers? I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get it. Kris sings better.

Honestly, I think Kris is the only one who hasn’t sung a bum note this season. I’m sure I’m wrong and people will show me just where he did, but I haven’t heard it. Now, I’m not saying that no bum notes will get you everywhere because while Kris has had a couple of amazing performances, he still doesn’t turn my crank…as does nobody this year actually. I guess I’m just wondering how Simon can live with his lying self. Again, I’ll say that I’m not a huge fan of any of them, but Kris has had the most spot on notes, followed probably by Adam. Then there’s Allison, followed dismally by Danny. Oh, and although I rather like him, Matt has had probably the most horrific notes of who is left in the competition.

Now, if you want to add glorious, amazing notes into that little critique, then Adam wins hands down, and I’d say that Danny loses because there’s nothing about his glory noties that would ever make anybody forget the suckage. Of course this is all my opinion.

  • tinawina

Kris has turned out to be my favorite because heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s chosen better songs and done more with his à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“weakerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ voice.

Kris’ voice is only “weaker” in the context of Idol (which is why I suspect you put weaker in quotes, so I’m thinking we agree on this). For this show the audience has been conditioned to consider glory note types as “better”, and subtlety doesn’t play well in 90 second clips on TV. But honestly, to me, Kris rarely hits a bad note. His voice is clear and strong. He’s just not a vibrato type singer. But he actually interprets songs pretty well to me.

  • JohnM

In a post about this the other day, I put Adam slightly behind Allison and possibly Kris, though honestly I find Kris so bland most of the time that I haven’t been able to make myself pay attention to know for sure. :sad_wp: (But I really liked him this week.) However, I recall hearing a bum note from him recently (don’t remember where), so none of them are perfect — not that I would expect any of them to be. But my ranking is Allison and/or probably Kris, followed very closely by Adam.

After that…. DANNY? Are you kidding? He’s the one who has had me yelping aloud in pain more than any other contestant this year. Absolutely horrific. (Though I’ll grant you that Matt does tend to be more spectacular about it when he does it!)

Yes, exactly, weaker when compared to the typical Idol belter. I can appreciate a good glory note now and then, but I much prefer the softer sounds of a Kris Allen or Jason Castro. The fact that Kris is able to rearrange songs to suit his style has made him stand out to me. And yeah, being able to stay on tune is pretty important too. :smile1_tb:

  • gingerly

For me, Allison has absolutely no range. She sings amazingly in the range she does have, but to me it’s totally suspect. I don’t find Allison to have a range that is fitting to American Idol. Yep, I like her phrasing, I like her tone, I like that she isn’t seeming like the typical 16 year old. I just don’t find that she has any range whatsoever. I’ve been told I’m crazy. I don’t care. I just don’t think she can sing more than 9 notes comfortably.

I’m absolutely not saying that it’s all that important in the grand scheme of things. My favorite singer probably can’t do 8 comfortably. He does, however, have a portfolio of amazing songs. I love him for his songwriting and will listen to him for that. Allison, I don’t think, has the songwriting ability…very few idols do, so they need to bring an amazing voice. I think Allison was called out on Don’t Want to Miss a Thing. She didn’t have the voice for that song and her performance was poor. I don’t even care about the studio version because autotune can make even me sound good.

  • Tatiana

The more I listen to Kris Allenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“To Make You Feel My Loveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ the more I think he should infuse his pop with a strong hint of country and make a run in that direction. I think heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d have a better shot as a country/pop artist than if he tries to compete with Matt Nathanson, Josh Kelley, etc.

Wow, I never thought of this but this would be a brilliant move for Kris. A male, slightly older Taylor Swift type sound could really work for him. Country is so embracing of Idols. The Josh Kelley/Matt Nathanson sound is much riskier. Has Kris ever expressed any interest/preference for country music?

Hey have you guys thought about the coronation song? I wonder what on earth they could possibly be thinking for Adam??!

I started following AI heavily in Season 7, so I don’t think I’m necessarily that conditioned to prefer glory note types– Brooke and Jason were my 2nd and 3rd faves last year, and they DO have weaker voices than Kris Allen IMO. But I preferred Brooke and Jason a bit more because I found their tones more unique. Kris’ singing is better, but I couldn’t pick out his voice on the radio, for example. Same with Anoop– guys has a *great* voice, much more clear and strong than Kris’, and seems Anoop can do more things with his voice but again, it did not sound unique to me. The other remaining contestants have more identifiable voices I think.

  • tinawina

Now that I could agree with. Kris is a good singer but I don’t know if he is as identifiable on radio as Brooke or Jason would be. Everything for him would come down to the songs. But then, that’s true for everyone isn’t it?

  • LaurelG

Another thing that strikes me about those WNTS numbers (and Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m no numbers nerd btw, so thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s that lol) à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Cook was FAR ahead of Archie, much more so than Adam from the next competitor down, and in fact, more than the gap between Adam and the third in line. So, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Adam is definitely in the driverà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s seat,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s true, but compared to Cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s 18-wheeler (with a one-seat trailer) Adam appears to be driving a Mini-Coop!

But of all the numbers out there (DI, youtube hits, iTunes, etc.), these are imo the most unreliable. After all, Carrie won with a composite score of 57.3 compared to Bo’s 72. Also, Melinda Doolittle had an amazing 78.7 rating before she was voted off in third and later Jordin won with a score of 59.6.

I’m actually amazed that Adam is leading the pack because there is always a huge differential for him each week (big spread between the high scores and low scores) in part because his singing (like Adam himself) is more polarizing.

I personally think Adam is driving a monster truck.

  • CathyMK

For me, Allison has absolutely no range.

According to IdolRanges.com (yes, there’s an Idol website for every imaginable purpose), Allison’s range is 10 1/2 steps, equal to Danny’s. Interesting, given the gushing about Danny’s voice here today. If you add in falsetto use, Danny gains 1 step. I don’t think Allison has used her falsetto on the show, so we can’t really compare. Brooke White has a 10 step range. Brooke was also the only girl in Season 7 whose voice I could pick out in the group songs. Allison’s has that same quality that makes it instantly recognizable, even without a huge range.

Last year, I always felt like Michael Johns was straining to hit notes he couldn’t quite make, while I never felt that way about Brooke, even though her range is smaller. Now that Michael’s off Idol and singing songs of his choice that fit his style and voice, I don’t notice that at all. Once Season 8 is over, I hope Allison gets to work with producers and songwriters who will help her showcase her unique voice and talent.

  • gingerly

Certainly, too for Jason and Brooke. Ultimately, they aren’t stellar singers so it comes down to the song they sing…or the pimpage they get. I’ll not be one to say that being pimped doesn’t matter. I don’t know that being “identifiable” matters if your song doesn’t resonate.

  • http://thescraploft.blogspot.com/ kizgold

It is obviously time for Simon’s annual hearing exam. IMO it should be Adam & Kris.

  • JohnM

Yes, Allison and Danny have displayed the smallest range on the show this year. But what does “suspect” mean? I have no idea what you’re talking about. And what on Earth is a range that is “fitting to American Idol”?

I think Allison was called out on Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Want to Miss a Thing. She didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have the voice for that song and her performance was poor.

It certainly was. But I would not say that she doesn’t have the voice for that song, because she has sung at least one other song this season with a range equal to that one, and she did so very well. I really think something was wrong when she sang Don’t Want To Miss A Thing — sick, monitor mix, whatever.

So yeah, she can sing way more than 9 notes comfortably. And you’re right, she sings amazingly in the range she has. And that’s not only good enough for me, it affects me probably more than any other singer I’ve ever heard.

  • tinawina

I don’t think any internet numbers are that reliable, honestly. Jordin had next to no Idol internet buzz compared to Blake. Carrie and Bo were probably about the same. I would argue Bo had more buzz by the time the finale rolled around. I think that stuff will give you a pretty good handle on the size and the rabid-ness of the core fanbase, but it tells you nothing about casual voters. And if casual voters like the other person more, your idol is toast.

  • gingerly

Allisonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s has that same quality that makes it instantly recognizable, even without a huge range.

I dont know that recognizable equals good. I really wasn’t impressed with Brooke last year…or this based on her song that my mom (who is 75) might sing. Sorry I’m much less a Brooke fan than an Allison fan. I’ve heard (back in the 1970′s in my heyday, everything Brooke tries to do, only so much fresher then). I do think she’s beautiful though. Just don’t want to listen to music that I already have and have it on my iPod done so very much better.

I also have to wonder why we haven’t heard Allison’s falsetto. She absolutely should have done it on Don’t Want to Miss a Thing if she had one to do. The song was screaming for it, and I have to think she really disappointed by not doing so. Again, just my opinion but it makes, to me, her range very suspect.

  • jpfan

I don’t like either of the post Idol albums that Cook or Archie put out but I think getting Top 40 play is a very good thing for both of them. Crush came the closest to being a big Top 40 hit but feel short of the Top 10. Cook hasn’t cracked the Top 20 yet if I remember right.

I think Archie has sold enough albums to insure he won’t be dropped even without more hits. Supposedly, he’s getting a second album although I’m not sure that’s official. It’ll be the first time in years that they haven’t dropped the runner up which would be an achievement (if it’s true). Now he just needs better songs.

  • gingerly

Well, John, when you sing a song that demands a range and you don’t display it, I think it makes you suspect that you don’t have the range to sing it. I’ve been told on this blog among other places that Allison has an amazing range. Sorry, but I just do not see it as such, so I call it suspect so as not to offend the suporters. I’ve also said that Allison has amazing phrasing and such. So I don’t know that she can’t be amazing on one song that requires no range while fairly sucking on a song that requires some range. That would be another reason for calling her range suspect.

I never entered Danny Gokey into the conversation, so to compare him to her doesn’t even make sense. I don’t think he should even be around still so I’ve chosen to ignore him. I’m not about to compare the two because. to me, they aren’t even comparable. I just wanted to point out that your references to him mean nothing to me. I actually love not one of them this year.

I’m actually getting to the point where I hope she goes home this week so I don’t have to deal with this questioning anymore. I just don’t think she’s all that. I know many do and I’m ok with that. I’m actually more ok with that than people thinking Danny is the next coming, but we have to deal with that too. I just happen to think that Kris and Adam for different reasons are absolutely the best of the year. Oh and I hope Allison comes in 3rd.

  • LK09

I honestly love most of his album-some better than others and so do all of my kids (young adults) and husband. I think it is official that he is working on his second album and it will be out this year. They originally talked about putting out both a regular and a Christmas album this year, but JIVE has scrapped the Christmas album for now. David has been writing music with Mike Krompass, his guitarist while touring (they wrote ALTNOY and Zero Gravity together). I assume he will work much harder on it in the Fall after the summer tour is over.

    New Idolatry.

    Think of the children! ROFLMAO

  • Tess

My head is all a jumble, my mind is in a twirl, if it isn’t numbers and acronyms its labels and management, its vocal range and identifiable voices, its what are they singing and what the hell will they sing, its what are they selling and will they ever sell in the real world. Oh my, too much information, too much fan caterwalling, too much of everything!

Past idols are past idols, the results from past years cannot be changed. We cannot compare this years idols to past idols because perception is different. And what the hell do I care.

This is a reality show with a singing competition thrown in, it takes place every year, every year someone wins and others loose, and if the contestants are really LUCKY they might have a CHANCE AT A CAREER.

I just want to guess what they are singing Tuesday night and then on Wednesday I’ll guess about who is leaving. In four weeks I’ll guess who might win it all. In 6 months I might want to buy an album. In 10 years I’ll probably be dead!

  • ppwars

As far as I know, no contestants have been referred to as “show stoppers” or such except for Alli and Adam. Some of the others may have, but not significantly.

If one cannot see where the superstar potential is, then they are like me: entrenched, no logic will sway them. BUT, in more than one case, I have replayed the live performances and changed my assessment of a performance. One such was Kris’ Disco ditty. I initially said “bad”. It was good. My sound system was down on performance night.

BUT, also, I know talent and commercial appeal, the numbers of it. I know multiple genres. So, given those credentials, the reality of it may not favor my choice; but, it may. Regarding my favorite: no telling how blind I may appear here.

Sitting here, I look at it objectively. If I never yield a point , discount all that say; and so I shall yours. BUT, allow your self to sit back and be objective. You will not feel so bad if it your fav doesn’t survive next week or beyond.

All who have criticized Allison: I admit that you are slightly justified on a minor point in your post. SO THERE: please accept all that I say as fact, except for a very obscure, unimportant point, now that I have proven my objectivity.

  • jpfan

I was responding to a comment about Archie being dropped. Since Cook has sold alot more albums I thought it was obvious that I was implying he’d done well. Who said Archie was doing better (confused)?

I just think both of them would be doing even better if they had those big fat Top 40 hits that Jordin and Daughtry cranked out. It doesn’t mean they’re not doing fine. They are. I’m sure Idol would be happy if the finalists this year did as well.
I just hope they put out music I like more but I’m not too optimistic at this point.

  • Chipmunk

IMO, In terms of voices this is, by far and without any contest, the weakest season. Thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Adam and thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s about it. The others have pretty average voices and really havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t showed much range.
I like Allisonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s and Kris styles more, and thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s what gets me about them, but I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think they sing better than Danny, all three of them are kinda in the same line for me. Matt is not that far too.

I agree Leome. I mean the only difference between Gokey and Kris for me is that Gokey comes off as a smarmy wiseass who picks corny songs, while Kris is a blander, nicer, less irritating contestant who does something with his songs, but no way can any one convince me that Kris, Allison or Matt have a better voice than Danny, as much as I cant stand the dude….its just that they are less despised (Among online debaters at least).

And despite all his crappy performances the Gokey does appear to have a large fanbase that will vote faithfully, so I’m sure Simon isnt too far off about his place in the finale. Anyway, nect week should be interesting

  • wordnerdarchie

ITA. It would be great if both would be doing better on Top 40. However, charting on HAC is the next best thing. I like the songs on HAC better anyway. Top 40 is (shudder) blech to my ears.

I thought David A. got into the top 10 on Top 40, but I must be mistaken. DC made 20 with Light On, and 28 with Time of My Life. That Rainbow song getting that high on that format is a jaw-dropper stat…totally unexpected. Don’t you have to love the rainbow?

  • jpfan

Sorry, the rainbow is just the kind of cheesy song I hope to never hear Adam Lambert sing. We’ll see how good the talent is this season when they have to do two songs a night. That usually reveals alot of weakness or strength in the singer.

  • Chipmunk

I think TPTB may scheme against Kris for the same reasons they did against Castro – he has the upset potential.

Kris has the upset potential yep, but not Jason in last season. Jason was never going to cause an upset in the David vs David finale. Those 2 brought it each week and had solid support for the finale, while Jason fumbled from Top 6. It was a toss up for 3rd/4th/5th place for Jason and the rest.

Kris on the other hand can continue to deliver the same bland but strong performances and perhaps upset Danny and maybe make it to the finale, its a possibility.

  • wordnerdarchie

Doing 2 songs a night can do some of them in. Remember Jason & Brooke? Also, that’s when you begin to hear strain on their voices. It’s a marathon to the finish for the last 2 standing.

  • gingerly

I sorta agree, Chipmunk. I find that Jason couldn’t (or didn’t want to) deliver last season. I just don’t find much bland about Kris. I think (I hope) he can bring amazing (albeit not vocally wtf) performances each week. I honestly don’t think you need to have all those glory notes if you connect. The entire thing is “if you can connect.” Kris has done a pretty good job so far. He’s connected more than anybody as I see it without “freaking amazing glory notes.” Now David Cook was my favorite last year and he had amazing glory notes…but it’s not why he was my favorite. I just felt he connected best with those notes. Anyhow, I think this year will be interesting to see.

  • Niall

Oh gosh I love Slezak. Think of the children, indeed. The “no more Allison :-( face” thing was hilarious. If Allison gets booted next week at least I know we’ll get an awesome Idolatry episode when Slezak finally interviews her.

Hey have you guys thought about the coronation song? I wonder what on earth they could possibly be thinking for Adam??!

They should bypass the cheese and do an electro dance pop version of Frank Sinatra’s My Way as his coronation song.

  • wordnerdarchie

eta: wordnerdarchie, Crush got to #12 on Top 40

Tatiana, thanks for that info. I thought it was higher. Wishful thinking I guess.

  • Anya

“I thought David A. got into the top 10 on Top 40, but I must be mistaken. DC made 20 with Light On, and 28 with Time of My Life. ”

You aren’t mistaken, Crush got as high as #10 but didn’t go to single digits. If David A. gets dropped by Jive, a number of labels will pick him up but I don’t think he will get dropped. I just hope that he will eventually meet a label that gets him. And, that wouldn’t be HR or any label associated with AI. They create Michael Bolton type singers. No matter how much I can try to convince myself that Cook and Daughtry have anything to do with rock, their stuff is not far from Michael Bolton’s. I am 21 and didn’t really know who MB was but I read somewhere that Cook was a MB in a t-shirt. So, I looked him up on YT and I agree. I am not saying this is bad but AI produces that kind of sound. You may call it rock ballad cheese.

  • Chipmunk

I honestly donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think you need to have all those glory notes if you connect. The entire thing is à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“if you can connect.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Kris has done a pretty good job so far. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s connected more than anybody as I see it without à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“freaking amazing glory notes.

It’s not all about glory notes definitely.I was a huge Castro fan last season even though I wanted Cook to win, so I get you totally. I just find him very bland and he doesnt connect with me because I’m practically fighting the snooze till he’s done, but its obvious he connects to you and several others which is a great thing for him. He’s doing real good.

If he’s in the finale, I’ll be happy for him as he’s been solid and steady. But i would definitely hope there’s a Lambert or Iraheta right there with him, if not I will fall asleep if I have to sit through 3 KRis Allen songs in one night and then listen to Danny Gokey sing the other 3!Yikes!

  • weareallinnocent

I am mystified. Where are Allisonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s votes! Where have the votes of all the momà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s, and grandmomà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s, and a reasonable % of boppers gone! Well, we all know that, and ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a shame. Not that the front runner isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t very deserving. He is. But I wonder how many have voted based on hormones rather than hearts, conception rather than conviction.

Well count me as one of the (MANY) viewers whose frontrunner votes are coming from hearts and conviction!!!!!!!!!!!

I love Allison, don’t get me wrong, but it IS POSSIBLE that she’s NOT CONNECTING for whatever reason. Consequently, maybe she’s not touched alot of hearts or tapped folks’ convictions. Possible, even probable, no?

I do agree that Allison and Adam probably are splitting votes, even though they’re quite different. Stylistically, there’s some commonality, so for many, she’s a second favorite. Like it or not, at this point in time, a lot of people choose not to split their votes anymore. This, I believe, is costly to Allison.

I’d say the vast majority of people have good hearts and valid convictions. They simply don’t always lead every single one of us to the very same place for the exact same reasons. And, that’s ok and certainly not “a shame!”

(climbing down and passing the soapbox…)

  • colette

So Simon wants Danny and Adam? Well, at least he’s upfront about who he’s championing. But I think he’s really wrong.

I know there’s a lot of personal animosity toward Danny re: the perception of him somehow using his wife’s death as a sympathy point. Personally, that’s not evident to me or bugging me.

I just can’t agree that he’s one of the two best singers. He has a pleasing husky voice, but it’s far less flexible an instrument than Kris’s, and less soulful to my ears than Allison’s. And Danny’s ability to choose, arrange and put over an array of material? Compared to Kris’s musicianship? No contest.

Adam is probably a foregone conclusion, and though I’m not a big fan I certainly can see the appeal and talent there. But I’m wondering if Sir Simon looking into his cash register crystal ball just finds Gokey more marketable than either K or A. He’s all about the “package,” which is one of the things that makes corporate pop music a stagnant pool of sonic sludge these days.

I can only hope that he doesn’t hype Danny and diss Kris in ways that shape the outcome. But even Sir Simon can’t control how people vote, ultimately. The panel has fairly consistently sold Kris short, and he may have the last laugh! At least I hope so….

  • colette

One other thing on the “bland” front. That one’s a very subjective call. I do not find Kris bland — he swings, he changes stuff up, he chooses interesting songs and remakes them with new chords, he can put out an impassioned “Make You Feel My Love” ballad performance and a jaunty “How Sweet It Is” breeze-through.

With all due respect to other listeners, I’m wondering if some are confusing volume with excitement, and flash with sophistication and intelligence.

I like to rock out as much as the next girl. But Kris doesn’t put me to sleep — even though he sometimes gets into a mellow groove. But so do many of the musicians I love (including James Taylor, Brazilian singers, a lot of jazz artists), and can listen to again and again with joyfulness in my heart.

  • Gary Seven

Adam & Danny would be a great final.

  • Tess

If someone would please show me a mega-star that Simon has created that has set the music world on its ear I’d really appreciate it.

He has some reality show finds that have done well (Leona Lewis) (Paul Potts), a boy/men group (El Divo … who, by the way, annoy the livin crap out of me, and some other one hit wonders.

Now, I do not think that Simon controls 19E and doesn’t have the say in who gets signed, etc. He produces in England, but I do not think he controls a record label. If someone could help me here I’d appreciate it.

I think it’s mostly because each individual’s definition of “success” may not be the same as someone else’s. If you ask 20 people what makes a success in the music business, you’re likely to get 20 different answers.

And, of course the perspective on their success would be different for the people who don’t keep up with the daily goings on in their lives. It’s conceivable that those people haven’t seen or heard of either of them in a while, an out of sight, out of mind type thing. So, when comparing them to the recording artists they hear all the time on the radio or on tv or that they read about weekly in a magazine, some of the AI alumni’s career milestones at this point might not seem that big of a deal to them.

They’re both making a living, so that’s a good thing I think. Will it last? Will they get the big Top 40 hits, multi-platinum cd’s, headlining arena tours? Who knows at this point. I’m not sure it matters who does or does not think each one is successful. I suppose what matters most is if they find themselves to be successful.

I am 21 and didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t really know who MB was but I read somewhere that Cook was a MB in a t-shirt. So, I looked him up on YT and I agree. I am not saying this is bad but AI produces that kind of sound.

I remember reading that Blender article and I just assumed that the writer was trying to be over-the-top to make a point. At this point I’ve heard Cook’s songs likened to Daughtry, Nickelback, Chris Cornell, Raine Maide and even (gasp!) Miley Cyrus..I’m sure I’m missing a few people. His album is definitely very eclectic and I think that’s why he gets these comparisons that seem out of the blue. Come back to Me reminds me of the Fray, Light on has a touch of Nickelback and Barbasol really doesn’t remind me of anyone. It’s possible that the Magic Rainbows or one of Cook’s other ballads made the Blender writer think of Michael Bolton…but I’ve seen Michael Bolton in a T-shirt and he is no David Cook.

ETA: Kelly Clarkson is on the same label as Cook and she strikes me as more of a top 40 artist. I think the AI producers do try to fit the style of the artist.

But I would not say that she doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have the voice for that song, because she has sung at least one other song this season with a range equal to that one, and she did so very well. I really think something was wrong when she sang Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Want To Miss A Thing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ sick, monitor mix, whatever.

…..During the rehearsal, the music super was pulling his hair out because the orchestra was ruining the performance. This was stated by a reporter on scene.

I noticed a disconnect between Alli and the orchestra before her first problem and knew what was coming. The mixing was the worst that I can recall in a production such as AI.

In her defense, she hit ALL the notes in the most difficult ending run perfectly. Very few can do this on very limited rehersal with the band blowing it. It was remarkable under the circumstances. She did it in spite of the orchastra that was, unbelivebly, over powering her and was out of sync many times. Had to strain even her abilities.

All that said, it was a huge mistake in song choice, as was Hot Stuff. She hurt herself at a critical point in the contest. These last two have cost her dearly. Strictly an inexperienced bopper whose 16 year old brain dictates her adherence to her self image, and prevents her from calculating song strategy, costume choice, or any effective strategy for that matter.

Early on, The judges hurt her badly for the obviously unjustified reasons. I’m a country expert ( a little overstated, but I do vacation at the Redneck Rivera), and I am baffled on the B3 for that performance( judges tried to help her there), altho’ it is apparant that not many country fans watch AI. She could have sung that at the GOO and have gotten a standing O. Word! Best performance of in a real country motif; B3 for the effort. Looked as cute as any 16 year old, appearing 15 at times, maybe 20 at others. Perfect costume. Results may have reinforced her rocker image preference over appropriate garb, AND song choice.

One other thing on the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“blandà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ front. That oneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a very subjective call. I do not find Kris bland

Sorry, the rainbow is just the kind of cheesy song I hope to never hear Adam Lambert sing.

If he wins, he’ll have no choice. He has to sing a coronation song and for the past 7 years they have all been corny. It comes with the territory.

I think that’s true of all the idols except the big 4 (Kelly, Carrie, JHud and Daughtry). Maybe Clay… he’s not necessarily famous for hit records, but I would say the average person off the street knows who he is. Arguably Fanny? But that’s about it.

I think most everyone starts out trying for mainstream stardom, and most don’t reach it. BUT, almost all the popular ones do continue to make a good living in the entertainment industry for quite a while. Even Bo Bice does not have a day job. That is way more than he could say before Idol. So they all done good to me, wherever they end up.

Sad but true. And, some of those cheesy, cornball tunes seem to live forever on AC radio and the playlists of certain retail stores. So, whoever wins, is going to be forced to sing one of those crappy songs, and will likely never be able to escape it!

I think most everyone starts out trying for mainstream stardom, and most donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t reach it. True that. I mean, Justin Guarini never really sold any cd’s and he’s certainly not a successful recording artist. But, his stint on AI earned him a regular tv hosting gig. It may not be superstardom, but it’s collecting a steady paycheck from the entertainment industry. I think that’s a realisitc and acceptable goal for these kids. Not everyone is going to be Kelly Clarkson. The music business is extremely harsh and fickle.

I think a cheesy coronation song would be a disaster with Adam (I’m picturing Adam singing A moment like this or Time of My Life and it’s not pretty). I think that allowing the contestants to pick their favorite song out of the top 10 submissions is a better way to go.

I love Allison, donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get me wrong, but it IS POSSIBLE that sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s NOT CONNECTING for whatever reason. Consequently, maybe sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not touched alot of hearts or tapped folksà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ convictions. Possible, even probable, no?

I know what you mean by that, the problem is that her forte are up tempo/rock number, the AI audience seems to connect more with ballad types. I find it a pity because up tempo songs require a good sense of rhythm and are in my sense more difficult to pull off without hitting a bad note.

I mean, Adam is the prime exemple of that, I am a huge fan of his up tempo BSC numbers but it is unmistakenly his ballads that have brought him the most recognition.
Same for Kris, I am growing tired of him doing his romantic/ballad schtick every week even tough he does it with great musicality and hitting almost every note, but I can’t deny that it brought him a lot of votes from his target audience.

But when Allison did her one slow number ICMYLM, a lot of people thought she was too young for that song (I thought she interpreted that brilliantly).
The two 16 years old who did well on the show Jordin and Archuleta had their moment with ballads IWHN and Imagine, hope Allison can pull something like this this week, there is definetly plenty of quality songs to pick.

  • weareallinnocent

Well, fwiw, I never saw David Cook singing a gooey squirt of cheese whiz well either, but… If Cook can do it, Lambert surely can. Go Adam, Paint a Magic Rainbow (no pun intended!)

  • oceana

If Adam, Allison, and Kris are in the top 3, I will be pleased. Beyond that I don’t care.

Re the conversation about top 40 and hit songs etc., it’s true that a hit song or two can catapult you to mega-fame and I hope that happens for Dave Cook as I’m a fan. I think it will when the right song hits at the right time. He has some good songs that haven’t had a chance yet.

But I think it’s unfortunate that in our country it’s all about blockbusters now. In music, film, and books. The corporate takeover of the arts has resulted in this. There are fewer artists, and a few huge hitters making most of the money. I am speaking in generalizations of course but I think I have a point.

Jason Mraz was around for a few years before he got his big hits and now he’s smoking hot. I mean, it doesn’t always happen with the first cd or the first two singles. O.A.R. finally had a huge hit (Shattered) with their 6th cd. Etc.

Not everyone gets hits right away like Daughtry and Carrie. Kelly didn’t have any big hits until her second cd, Breakaway. Carrie was in country, she was the right person in the right place at the right time with the right songs, not to mention her talent, class, and looks. But overnight mega-success isn’t the norm. It’s unusual.

Daughtry was lucky that he didn’t win and never had to sing a coronation song. He had freedom to make his cd the way he wanted to. The winners and runnersup don’t really have that same kind of freedom. I seriously think that David Cook had some songs on his independently released cd, Analog Heart, that are similar to what the Fray is doing, and he is much more alt-rock than his label is presenting him. So far they’re going for more HAC type songs, and actually there’s nothing wrong with that anyway, that’s where Daughtry and Kelly have had strong success also.

I’m saying that there are dozens or hundreds of good singers out there and only a few are mega-stars. You don’t have to be in that rarified group to be a success.

Top 40 is very much rap, hiphop, r&b, and lipsinchers like Brittney. With a few alt-rockers like the Fray, Nickelback, Daughtry, etc. A lot of us don’t care for top 40 and don’t listen to it. It’s not the be-all and end-all.

Daughtry and Kelly are both huge hits on HAC. It seems like they play more rock there than on top 40 these days.

David Cook is selling a lot of cds, that much I know. His fans are aware of all the great songs waiting in the wings that he hasn’t released yet as singles. Some of them are from previous cds, one cd that was unreleased, some are songs that didn’t make the cd (should have), others were (3) bonus songs from his cd. He has enough songs recorded right now to put out 2 more cds tomorrow if he had to. And most of those songs are better than the singles that have come out so far (imo). So that is why I am not worried about him equalling other Idols so far. I don’t mean to beat the fan bandwagon, I’m just wanting to put that information out there.

I think if David Cook puts out Heroes this summer he might have that big hit. Fingers crossed. :)

  • cheese

I thought Kara was writing the coronation song this year? Of course, she’s hit or miss with her songwriting. I would laugh if she wrote the song and it STILL turns out to be a big ball of cheese. Plus, you know she’ll try to fit the word “package” in there somewhere. Adam could sing about the package at the end of the rainbow.

With all due respect to other listeners, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m wondering if some are confusing volume with excitement, and flash with sophistication and intelligence.

I’m bored with Kris and I have plenty of music that I would classify as quiet and “sophisticated.” I don’t automatically love every guy with a mellow folk/acoustic sound. However, I’m sure there’s room for one more in the industry.

Not quarreling with your post or conclusions (I happen to agree) but I am curious about Daughtry and his freedom. He shares management and a label with Cook. I’m wondering how much more freedom he actually had, do we know?

Personally, not knocking Daughtry, but I think he benefited from the “shock boot” buzz, and his timing was impeccable. :-)

I also agree that success is not (or at least should not always be) quantifiable….

  • gingerly

I’m not a fan of Kara’s songwriting just as I’m not a fan of her critiuqes. I’m glad she’s writing the song this year however, as I just can’t imagine that anything will overshadow that magic that is rainbows. I just can’t help but think the coronation song of last year was special in so many different ways…from the meaning of the author to the interpretation of the artist. Yeah, I don’t see how anybody else has a chance. Yeah, I used to be scared of Kara but if her judging is any indication, she’s more to be laughed at than in awe of.

I don’t know for sure, but it’s my impression, garnered from things I’ve read here and there, that Daughtry pretty much had free reign to make the cd he wanted to make. It’s my feeling that DC didn’t have quite that much freedom. For example I don’t think he would have chosen his first 3 singles to be the only 3 songs on the cd that he didn’t co-write.

I could be all wet but it’s my belief, from 8 years of watching Idol, that the winners have all kinds of hands in the pot wanting to make the cd be great, and sometimes less hands could be better. Often the first cd is a hodgepodge, or over-produced. I don’t think David’s is that. Def not a hodgepodge. But judging from the songs he is choosing to sing on the tour, there were songs that he loved that didn’t make it on the cd, or were delegated to bonus songs (like Kiss on the Neck, that I think would be a big hit if released).

I’m not complaining, and I love DC’s cd, but I wouldn’t mind if it was slightly less produced, a little more stripped down, like Analog Heart.

I’m just babbling, I better stop as this isn’t a david cook thread and these are just my thoughts with no importance or not even saying I am right.

Let Adam take the crown. Fine with me. I don’t necessarily want my favorites to win. I didn’t want Jason to win last year nor do I want Allison to win this year. I wanted each of them to finish high enough so that they’d get noticed. I don’t get Gokey at all. Average voice singing basically the same shouted song every week.

  • weareallinnocent

oceana, I agree with everything you say about Cook’s CD, absolutely everything. :-)

I just don’t really know how Daughtry’s freedom compared, if it did. That’s all I was genuinely curious about, mainly because so many people argue that it’s better not to win, pointing to Daughtry and saying what you did about creative control, etc. With the same management and label, I’m dubious, but I have nothing to support my skepticism. LOL

    Danny is second here also

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Adam Lambert drives more traffic to americanidol.com than any other contestantà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ by a mile. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Adam Lambertà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is the #4 search term, and he has 4 of the top 30. Only à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Danny Gokeyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ also has a spot in the top 30 at #11. If the rankings were to be determined by americanidol.com visits referred bv search engines, youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d have to stack the contestants this way:
    1. Adam Lambert
    2. Danny Gokey
    3. Matt Giraud
    4. Kris Allen
    5. Allison Iraheta

The AI site is skewed towards contestants who were exposed very early in the competition, if you go to the forum section, the thread leaders are basically Adam (by a mile), Danny, Anoop and Matt, but these four had a huge lead even before the semifinals because they had fanbases already in place.
I remember that Anoop was actually leading in number of posts before it really became a serious competition.

Also on the WNTS numbers, these are not meant to predict any kind of outcome, just to rate the performances quality, there are a lot of other factors deciding wheter or not a contestant gets votes.

  • chessguy99

I think Simon is just reading the tea-leaves. Danny just has to much of a pre-built cushion that he hasn’t done much to expand, but also done nothing to lose. The show will deserve the dismal ratings it will get for a Adam/Danny final performance show. I’m not watching that, I’ll just come here and catch Adam’s performances later in the evening. I’ll watch the results show, just to see Adam, Alexis, Allison, Anoop and Kris.

Also, if the try to pull the same mega-pimping crap next year that they did with Danny; I’ll mail a postcard a day to Simon to not re-sign and bring us X-Factor.

weareallinnocent, (aw, love that song), I think there is more pressure on the winner, and expectations. A lot of songwriters and producers want to be involved because they all hope to get credits and make some money off the momentum of a winner.

Daughtry coming in 4th or 5th, I think he had more freedom but that’s just my feeling. I think it was kind of “conventional wisdom” that that’s what happens. I’d love to know what more knowledgeable people think because I can’t back up my feeling here with any facts.

I just think fan expectations become ridiculously high for these kids. Often I think we are hoping to validate our own choices (See? That’s who I voted for and I WAS SO RIGHT!!!) – or perhaps have their success seem proportionate to our level of dedication – rather than really consider what is the goal for these kids. (I include myself in the “we” because I’ve been guilty of it myself.) I’m sure when it comes down to it they all just want to make a living doing what they love. I hope they all have the chance to do that, in whatever shape it might take for each of them.

There are a lot of folks that went out at #4 that wish they’d have won. I think Daughtry had good timing as they started working on his album the minute he was voted off. They also put the bulk of their production money in him. Taylor got one producer and mediocor songs. Chris has talent, he had the surprise boot and he also had luck. I think luck plays a pretty big role in any sucess. Talent and hard work are important also, but they don’t always do the job without luck IMO.

Oh wait, screw their choices, the winner has to sing a song with the words magic rainbow in it anyway I remember reading the next morning that those werenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t the songs either would release as their first single and being irked..then I listened to the demo of TOML and nearly lost my breakfast.

In a recent radio interview in Asia, DA said that he was sooooooo happy that his version of TOML was dead and buried, never to see the light of day, and that no one would ever hear it. Words to that effect. haha!

  • sweetie99v

    Um..Adam canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t/shouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t sing a cheesy coronation song? Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s been singing in broadway shows for a decade. I think heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s comfortable with cheese. In fact wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t he in Brigadoon? Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s even comfortable with cheese in a Scottish accent.

    LOL That is too funny.

lol, David loves to jump and get the crowd jumping too. The ZG vids are awesome because of that. He gets a reeally good workout at concerts lol

UGH SIMON. Danny is NOT good enough to be in the finale, what on earth is wrong with you?

  • abbysee

Okay first things first, that Don’t Let Go from Archie was awesome! Wow, he can really bring it huh?

Secondly, I have to agree with Simon that Danny has one of the better voices left. Matt’s is suspect for sure as we know now. Kris has a sweet expressive voice, but it’s nothing to write home about. Allison has a great big voice, but doesn’t seem to be connecting. It is astounding, but also she has some issues that some have noted in other posts. Her enunciation is one thing, and her sameness is another. Out of those who are left she is more of a one trick pony. I think that will stand her in good stead as with her, you know exactly what you are going to get post idol.

Then there is Danny. I don’t like him, and won’t vote for him, but I think he has a great voice. My problem with him is that he doesn’t know what to do with it. I mean he has pandered, and manipulated, but he has yet to use it for good, and intelligently. The other thing is that I think that Simon doesn’t want Adam to lose, so he wants the weakest credible runner up. Matt is toast, that’s a given, but Kris could sneak in a put a big scare in tptb. I don’t think hes worthy, but he’s struck a chord with the voters and buyers, so he’s definitely in it. For a person who wants to see a good battle like last year, and season two where it was the only probable scenario, and unlike season three, which was a farce, I want the best final two and that would be Allison and Adam, but I think it will be Adam and Danny, snooze.

You know I didn’t really like “Don’t Let Go” when I first heard it but watching him is something else. He pours every ounce of feeling that he has into that song. He does every song in concert so much better live than on the CD.

Back in season 4 I was a huge Carrie fan. When Carrie was made fun of for her boring stage presence (being called a robot to be exact) and her lack of on-line fan presence compared to Bo many at the time were predicting he would win, especially after Top 3 night when he did the amazing In a Dream. He was being called the eventual winner, Clive pretty practically announced he was signing him that night, AOL predicted he would win as late as Final 2 night and I said over and over..don’t underestimate Carrie’s fanbase – it might be quiet but it’s powerful. Even the red carpet finale night most of the celebrities picked Bo for the win. I still called it for Carrie. We see how that turned out. Never underestimate a fanbase even when you don’t see massive on-line frenzy going on. I know lots of people who like Adam and of course he very much has the edge in a huge way…but I also know people who LOVE Danny, don’t go on boards or watch him on You Tube over and over, but they vote like mad.

  • bruno

    i can’t see adam winning.

if you liken this to a political campaign, adam won’t pick up the votes of others voted off. i think that anoop’s fans will lean toward kris. and when matt gets the boot, i’d say his fans will move more to danny (christian base). i predict a kris and danny final. adam will go out third.

the important thing from this point forward, is who is going to pick up the votes of those voted off.

i just can’t see adam picking up enough from anoop, matt or alison to put him over the top.

  • weareallinnocent

i predict a kris and danny final. adam will go out third.

Damn, talk about a snoozefest, that would seriously, seriously suck! And, I like Kris. :-)

  • Chuck_Bass

If is a Danny vs Adam finale , Adam will win , Danny won’t pick up the votes from other contestants , he’s disliked by the other fanbases .

Kris vs Adam , Adam win again ( biggest fanbase than Kris)

  • oceana

Simon has a REALLY good track record of picking the winner. He chose Ruben, Carrie, Fantasia, Kelly. He was wrong in season 6 when he said Melinda should be in the finale, but it was an already known conclusion that the show wanted Jordin to win.

I really disagree with this. Simon is wrong much of the time. I don’t recall him choosing Kelly. He didn’t even like her until halfway through season 1. She wasn’t thin enough or stylish enough to catch his eye. He was hung up on Christina or whatever her name was, and also the one who got voted off too early. (can’t believe I’ve forgotten these names) And he and the other judges pimped Justin all the way through, and he was really a mediocre singer. I think Simon jumped on the Kelly bandwagon at the end when it was obvious that she was going to win. He suddenly saw the light, lol.

He said he wanted Ruben to win, but the night of the finale he thought Clay had won it. He preferred Ruben but he didn’t know who would win. Of course it was obvious to everyone that Carrie and Fantasia would win their seasons. No brilliance needed there. He said no to Daughtry in the audition and no to Taylor and no to David Cook. He has made countless proclamations that are wrong, and he has reversed himself and changed his mind many many times.

What about Allison’s votes? IMO they would lean to Adam. I think Anoop’s will split between Matt and Kris. Do you not think that Lil’s votes will go to Allison being the only female left or will they go more to one the ‘Christian’ singers left? This next week will be a real hodge-podge. Adam has a lot of voters that sway from week to week to protect Kris or Matt. Now that it’s Top 5 and there is no save I don’t think you’ll see the vote splitting any longer.

Actually, this year I think there is a lot of cross-action regarding fan favorites. Meaning, I know people who like both Adam and Danny although they are completely different styles/singers. I don’t think its so easily cut this season. Kris is good at arranging songs, and so is Adam. therefore i can see a lot of people liking both of them. I am one of those people.

  • ppwars

Is Allison not a Christian? Not being so would be rather unusual based on her heritage and environment. If she is, not exactly fair exclude her in all the fishy talk.

  • JohnM

Replying to a few posts from quite a few hours ago — we were out trying to pretend that we actually have real lives….

gingerly: Well, John, when you sing a song that demands a range and you donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t display it, I think it makes you suspect that you donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have the range to sing it.

Okay, I think I understand now.

As I said previously, Allison has sung other stuff of equal range, so I’d flip your statement around and say I’m suspicious of the notion that she doesn’t have the range for that song (Don’t Want To Miss A Thing).

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve been told on this blog among other places that Allison has an amazing range.

You certainly won’t hear that from me. As I noted, she and Danny have displayed the smallest range of the top 13. According to what she’s shown, she most definitely does not have an amazing range.

…. in pitch, that is. She does have an amazing range of expressiveness and great volume control — and I suspect that you might agree based on your other comments.

I never entered Danny Gokey into the conversation, so to compare him to her doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t even make sense.

I’m afraid I don’t know what you’re talking about here either. I wasn’t comparing him to her — I simply mentioned him in passing (inadvisably, I guess!) as being the other contestant who has shown the smallest range this year. Indeed, it kinda makes me sick to my stomach to even mention the two of them in the same sentence….

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m actually getting to the point where I hope she goes home this week so I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have to deal with this questioning anymore.

…. which leads to…. another question! :wink_wp: What questioning? I asked you a couple of questions because I didn’t understand what you were saying about range. Didn’t even have anything to do with Allison herself.

Oh and I hope Allison comes in 3rd.

Me too, actually. I think she’d have a better shot at preserving who she is if she doesn’t have all the top 2 baggage.

weareallinnocent: I love Allison, donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get me wrong, but it IS POSSIBLE that sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s NOT CONNECTING for whatever reason. Consequently, maybe sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not touched alot of hearts or tapped folksà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ convictions. Possible, even probable, no?

I don’t know if it’s probable, but possible, absolutely.

ppwars: All that said, it was a huge mistake in song choice, as was Hot Stuff. She hurt herself at a critical point in the contest. These last two have cost her dearly. Strictly an inexperienced bopper whose 16 year old brain dictates her adherence to her self image, and prevents her from calculating song strategy, costume choice, or any effective strategy for that matter.

I’m of two minds about that. On one hand, if she wants to just stick with what she likes to do, ignore strategic calculation, and let the chips fall where they may, I’m cool with that. Kind of admire it, frankly. I’m more likely to like what she does in the future if she stays true to herself. She’s already achieved a great result — I’ve thought all along that I could be happy if she only made top 5.

On the other hand, I’m not convinced she’s ignoring strategy. To a fair extent, she’s done what I’ve thought she should do. Coming into top 9, I felt she needed to show subtlety in order to avoid the one-trick pony label, and she did that with the first half of Don’t Speak. However, that wasn’t enough for some people to “get it”, and so I felt that she should do a more fully-fledged ballad the next week, and she did that with I Can’t Make You Love Me. Then I figured, rock it back up the next week, and she did with Miss A Thing.

She and I parted ways this past week, as I thought it would be best for her to do exactly the kind of thing that Adam ended up doing — “balladizing” something (but I also loved what she did with Hot Stuff). But I’m hopeful she’s smart enough to do both a barnburner and a subtle ballad this week. If she does two rockin’ numbers, then I’ll be more inclined to agree with your assessment of her (in)ability to strategize.

Whew! I hope someone’s still reading this thread!

  • cookcricket

I’ve read several comments here and skimmed others. Some I have not read. It seems a majority of people are hoping for an Adam/Allison/Kris top three.

Apparently Simon wants Adam and Danny for the top two. One thing he stated was vocals. I also believe that Simon likes strong personalities. He also likes competition. Kris and Allison do not seem the competitive types, nor do they have strong personalities.

Having said that, my favorite so far is Kris and I really like Allison. Both of their personalities (to me) come out in their music. I went back and watched Kris’s journey from top 36. He was so thrilled to make it into the top 12/13!!! This brought tears to my eyes. :)

Kris’s vocals have been right on, for the most part, and his ability to make a song his own appeals to me a great deal. He also shows a lot of soul. He seems to me to be a straight forward guy, stating what he’s thinking w/o a lot of passion, however, his passion for music amazes me. This is Kris to me. Is this what it takes to make top 2 on this show? IDK. However, I hope beyond hope he does. Unfortunately this is not merely a singing competition anymore (was it ever?), but I hope enough Americans still see it that way and see what Kris has to offer.

  • koolgurl

Simon wants Danny in it because he knows how large Danny’s fanbase is, and if Danny gets voted off, his fans will vote for whoever is against Adam.

I agree that the coronation song might be as cheesy as it could be but I have faith Adam could pull it off and with all smiles – and being a good sport about it. Although i hope he would be given some freedom to tweak it to his singing style

    Um..Adam canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t/shouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t sing a cheesy coronation song? Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s been singing in broadway shows for a decade. • sunchick

I am 21 and didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t really know who MB was but I read somewhere that Cook was a MB in a t-shirt. So, I looked him up on YT and I agree.

I think that’s a gross oversimplification. Michael Bolton couldn’t pull off 90% of Cook’s concert or album material. Bar Ba Sol? Permanent? Kiss On The Neck? Straight Ahead? Mr. Sensitive? Honest? A Van Halen or Alice in Chains cover? Bar Ba Sol? Did I mention that one? Um, no. Lie would be a completely different song in Bolton’s hands, and not for the better. And so would Avalanche. I could go on…but I won’t, cuz I used up my get out of fanwanking jail free passes.

Every year people try to make the argument that it’s better not to win, and while at one time I might have believed it, every year I’m less and less convinced it’s true. The coronation ballad is a moment in time (ha ha, pardon the pun) that is mostly forgotten eventually. Mostly. Magic Rainbow is an anomaly because it turned out to be a perfect special occasion type of song for Olympic victory montages and weddings and graduations and…. Even so, I don’t think it’s become some kind of scarlet letter type of thing for Cook, and he has said he has no plans to sing it again. Anyway, the important thing to remember is that 19 is an evil mastermind that excels at spindoctoring. You do not want to be on their bad side, that’s for damn sure. And let me just point out that the tentacles are far reaching. (Even J Hud, as far removed as she is from American Idol, recorded under a Sony BMG label and came back to perform to boost album sales.) Once you’ve gotten into bed with 19 via AI, I think the odds say it’s way better to be TCO than not. Especially because Sony is no better, and are not above signing AI alum they arent totally stoked to have onboard, milking them for what they can get from their AI notoriety, and then letting them wilt on the vine with very little promo. Lately, 19 seem to want to ensure their TCOs are also the title holders, so, yeah, I think the best situation is to win. Win the show and then fight for your artistic freedom as best you can, or don’t audition, IMO. So, I’m guessing Adam wants to win, and if he does, he’ll do what he can with “Four words: Aristry, Glitter, Wow!” or whatever ridic coronation song Kara comes up with this season. (Actually, that kind of sounds like Adam, heh.) I think if Adam wins, he’ll go 19/Jive, not 19/RCA, and make something very heavy on the rhythmic/dance and poppy side and he’ll be fine with that because his creativity will really shine in the live show.

Danny….Danny if he makes the finale will go a contemporary christian route and I think they were looking for someone to market that way from jump, be it as winner or runner up. Look at all the singers who had recorded Christian music in some way who were put through to Hollywood this season, much less made the top 13.

I have no idea what they’ll do with Kris. He sounds like other popular artists like Mraz, yes, but the copycat thing doesn’t typically work too well for AI alum. He doesn’t really have a proven songwriting ability. Would they also try to fit him into the contemporary Christiam music box? Not sure. So, Kris is a dilemma and I think that might be the only reason they won’t push him through to the finale. WIsh they would, though, because Adam and Kris would definitely be the most entertaining for me.

  • Heart

At least I know the cheesy coronation song will be sung differently every time he performs it, if Adams wins! It’ll never be boring like the previous ones that had to be performed over and over. The only coronation song I’ve ever liked (so far) was Kelly’s “A Moment Like This”.

Anyone go to the Friends of Adam Show at the Upright tonight? I wanna hear the scoop! Did Adam show up?

ETA: The gals at IDF are there! Adam is on speakerphone to the Upright people, so everyone can hear what he says. Lots of theatre people are performing Adam songs from AI and theatre shows!

(Apparently he’s not stopping by Upright since a tweet says he’s been seen at another bar with one of his BFFs, Danielle)

  • Keel

On Cook being Michael Bolton in a t-shirt, isn’t Michael Bolton a white soul singer? He covered Otis Redding, Ray Charles and Percy Sledge songs and sang original songs in that genre (the names of which I don’t remember). I guess you could say they are similar because they are both , ahem, “follicularly challenged” (though MB is much more so as he is older) but I really have to disagree about their singing styles and overall vibe.

Update from Upright Cabaret …… Possible song spoiler for Adam?

Not sure where to put this, but tonight was the Upright Cabaret tribute for Adam. Of course, he wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t there, but he did call in and hereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a report from someone who was there.

Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s phone call was very funny!! The Upright guys asked him what it was like living in à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Alcatrazà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ . Adam joked back saying it was a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“prison of loveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ . Then they asked him to sing a little something and he sang à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Feelinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Goodà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Nina Simone! I think that might be one of the songs heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s singing next week!

…I agree with you re: the upcoming song selections. The last two did not serve her well. In a nutshell, I just want to SAVE THE ROCKER!

…I stated above that this was the year to make her run, and that a later run, even with a win, would benefit her no more career wise. A win would be nice for her, but any 16 year old would regard herself a complete success, beyond expectations, if ousted at this point.

…Uhhh whatever else, I’m about to nodd off.

    If ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s going to be a Danny-Adam top 2à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

Adam will win over Danny by landslide. Another à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“12-Million-votes-gapà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ scenario will happen again. Adam has the goodwill and admiration of so many viewers that no matter what the judges say in the finale, people will still vote for him. Adam has tons of fans; everybody is just not aware of it. I recently became aware of it because of the iTunes stats. It confirmed these: all AI online polls where Adam and Kris are leading, the media buzz and radio airplay both are getting à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ they all hold water. (Plus Dial Idol might be having serious glitches — Kris is always ranked lowest while Lil and Danny’s scores have been inflated.)

In fact there might be substantial Danny backlash (at least among core fans who actually power vote) since Kris should have been in the finale and not him.

And they wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t even shock eliminate Adam to ensure a Gokey win (if TPTB are really serious about that à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ and thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s so whatever IMO) because Adam IS the show (as the iTunes stats have confirmed). Adam out before the finale equals plunging ratings and unhappy sponsors — not going to happen in TPTBà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s terms.

And if Adam and Danny meet in the finale, Adam will win for reasons stated earlier. Of course, I could be wrong. There is always a possibility of Danny still winning however small. But I am more confident with my prediction because of the iTunes stats (sorry for reiterating this).

If Adam, Allison, and Kris are in the top 3, I will be pleased. Beyond that I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t care.

I am with you (barring that I do want Adam to win it all except I can’t get very anxious about that anymore), and I think so are many Adam fans, which is exactly why I am convinced we are going to get an Adam/Danny finale. :( Too many people would just be mellow about an Adam, Allison, Kris Top 3, and the outcome of an Adam/Allison or Adam/Kris top 2 is not anxiety-producing. TPTB want us in a voting frenzy to drive up their reported vote count totals and ratings.

I also wouldn’t be surprised to have them throw Adam under the bus in an Adam/Danny finale, like they did Cook last year, just to drive up voting from Adam’s enraged fanbase.

if you liken this to a political campaign, adam wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t pick up the votes of others voted off.

Which, also like in a political campaign, doesn’t matter at all once he locks up 51% or more of the vote. And as of now, based on all the info we have (itunes sales/ratings/reviews, the ymarketing studies of net traffic, votenumber1 polling) it looks entirely possible that he’s already done that. Compare where he is to where Cook was vs Archie last year in the indicators we have for both years and Adam’s much further ahead; and Cook won a blowout victory.

Even if he hasn’t, it isn’t at all likely Adam won’t pick up *any* votes, and the vanishing contestants are those who are getting fewer votes anyway, which makes it even less likely he will be overtaken.

Here is some fun with math: going by the latest votenumber1 results, even if the voters split 70/30 for his furthest-ahead opponent, Adam will still win.

Assuming everyone has the current votenumber1 percentages of the vote:
Adam currently has 40% of the vote
    Danny has 22%
    Kris: 21%
    Allison: 10%
    Matt: 5%

Assume all of Kris, Allison, and Matt’s supporters break 70%/30% for Danny (totally unlikely but whatever):
    Adam: 40% 6% 3% 1.5% = 50.5%
    Danny: 22% 15% 7% 3.5% = 47.5%

So if those percentages are right (and that’s conservative going by the net traffic and itunes sales results), Adam only has to get 30% of the votes of the disappearing contestants to lock in a victory.

Add to that, many of the votes will just disappear as many power voters don’t vote or don’t vote as much once their favorite is gone (which favors Adam because it strengthens the value of his existing lead).

    Sanjaya Malakar Rates This Seasonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹American Idolsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢

Sorry, but I think it’s hilarious that this kid genuinely believes his opinion carries any weight or credibility with the voting public.

Sold Out VIP Packages for Archieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s tour with Demi:

Yay for Archie. I’m really proud of him!

    Each VIP ticket is $195 dollarsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.scary

That’s nothing compared to what some people have dropped for the priviledge of seeing him.

With all due respect to other listeners, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m wondering if some are confusing volume with excitement, and flash with sophistication and intelligence.

That could be. I’d love an Adam/Kris finale. I enjoy the contrast between the two…much like the David/David finale last year. Kris isn’t as flashy as Adam, but that’s why he might be a threat. Not everyone likes flash.

I think Megan Joy has a great voice and doesn’t know how to use it, but I think Danny just flat out has a horrible voice. It’s all just subjective though.

I don’t care how large a singer’s range is. Especially if a singer has a huge range but just sounds annoying. I’ve always found Kris’s voice unique.

I don’t want Adam in the finale. Or Danny either for that matter. I still think Allison, Kris, and Matt are the most marketable contestants. I’m really unsure on how well Adam’s first album will do post-idol. I keep thinking about how well Blake’s album did and yes, I know Adam is a much much much better singer than Blake. But performance and studio downloads of the stuff sang on the show don’t really account for anything when the season is over.

I went as well but had to leave a little after 10 p.m. to get home to my kids. I told them I wouldn’t be gone too long and the boo boo faces are just too much for me to ignore. I really had a nice time and met some passionate Adam fans. Some of the older people (moms) I was planning on meeting were unable to go, so the IDF gals were nice enough to include me. Thanks everyone!

Since this is the first idol related function I have every been to, it was interesting to listen to the stories from AI fans of past seasons. One very nice woman from Guam was there with her daughter. (Her daughter goes to school out here so she didn’t fly in just for this). The mother and daughter are also Claymates and told me some very funny stories about previous AI concerts.

I have never been to an AI concert, but plan on going this year. My five year old LOVES Adam as do I. We love him for different reasons of course. I find him not only talented, but intellectually interesting as he does seem to have some insight into life. I wish I was that together at his age. And my five-year-old thinks he’s cute. So we will turn the AI concert into a “Mommy and Me” day.

I’m kind of disappointed I missed the phone call from Adam, but that is ok as I can listen to it here on-line. And even if he showed up and I met him in person, there wouldn’t be the time or the personal connection to him to ask the questions that I am interested in him answering. So since I don’t have the access, I will wait for the in-depth interview from Adam (I’m looking at you Rolling Stone – and he better make the cover) on how the AI experience has changed him as a person. Did he learn anything about himself or others that surprised him? Has he changed so much that he really can’t go back to the way things were before AI? I do believe there is some truth to the phrase, “you can’t go home.” I am also interested in what the spiritual experience Adam had in Europe that has been referenced. But enough about my dream “Q and A” session.

I think the guys that run the Upright Cabaret are great. To the outside viewer, the owners, the performers and staff appear to be one big happy family. As usual, the venue is much smaller than it appears on You Tube. It’s hard to imagine that space containing Adam. There was a large screen on the wall and they played some of Adam’s Upright Cabaret performances. They also played some of Adam’s AI Itune recordings.

The performers that I saw were all terrific and it is a reminder of how many talented singers and musicians that are out there who are not well known outside their circle. Some of them had worked on the stage with Adam, like the couple who performed in the musical “Hair” with him. The biggest news out of that performance was that Adam had seen them both naked, (I believe there is a nude scene in that show). Jai Rodriguez from “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” also sang, and who knew, he was really good. I”m sorry I didn’t take better notes, so this isn’t much of a review. But I will say the guy who sang “Dust in the Wind” was funny as he had rigged himself with flour so it wafted in the air during the performance.

There was also an Adam Lambert “Glam-Bert” Look-Alike contest. Since this is L.A., the most anyone did to dress like Adam was to wear black nail polish. As you know, we are just a bit too cool here to go all out with the “Ring of Fire” outfit. That’s why I’m hoping his homecoming vid package will be in San Diego, where the folks might get a bit more excited about seeing a celebrity and turn out the welcome wagon.

I’m glad the Upright Cabaret is getting some buzz from Adam’s AI run. The place was packed and the vibe was fun. I would go again. The service at the restaurtant was great and the food was good. Unfortunatley, I was in the patio section so I had to watch the live performances on screen. Next time, I guess I’ll machete my way to the main room so I can see the action up close.

In terms of where singles for Cook and Archie are charting, which chart are people referring to, that is another part of the confusion. Billboard Hot 100, Pop 100, Adult Contemporay, Top 40 and I don’t think all Top 40 charts are necessarily the same as Billboard Top 40 though it may be considered the definitive Top 40 – for example is Ryan Seacrest’s Top 40 = Billboard Top 40 or the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 or Billboard Pop 100? Is it Neilsen Soundscan’s Top 40?

If one is speaking about Simon Cowell I think that list pretty much speaks for itself that Simon has picked some pretty good talent or certainly successful talent.

I would hardly call those peeps one hit wonders.

Il Divo is not my cup of tea but man they sell records and sell out tours.

I am not familiar with Paul Potts but I hear people raving about the guy all the time. So I have to imagine he is doing well.

I like Leona Lewis and I found her voice unqiue for the genre so I didn’t mind hearing her songs 15 times a day on the radio and I see her having a long career at this point.

ETA And I see sweetie99v has pointed this out, how many NEW artists in the years since the inception of Idol has done better than Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson and Daughtry outside of Disney or Disneyesque product – like the Jonah Brothers and Hannah Montana aka Miley Cyrus. Taylor Swift for sure.

Sorry Lavender1960, the stats I quoted were from Billboard’s Top 40, HAC and AC. Sorry for the confusion. :)
