Congrats to Daughtry, it’s a match made in rock heaven.

For real, Nickleback’s recent album is much better than Daughtry’s.

SO happy to hear that Taylor’s going the country route, I think it’s a great fit in today’s country, with the definition expanding to fit more pop, but also more soul/rock/bluegrass.  I think he could have some hits there.

If you look at the row below Reba in the Celebrities In Smashville video posted at the Preds site you can see Kelly was there at the Preds game last night with Reba & Narvel. Bonus: Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman are also in the video (they’re in a different box).

Carrie was obviously also there in her usual box with family & friends as you can see in this video, also at the Preds site The Preds closed out the Red Wings last night in Nashville, winning their playoff series 4 games to 1, making the Preds the 1st team to advance to the 2nd round of the NHL playoffs. Mike’s playoff beard is going to be getting a little longer ;)

“he’s got awhile to wait.  Unless it’s through Jimmy and company, he can’t act on anything until after tour.”

Very true, raya – That Right of First Refusal Contract will be in play for a while yet. IDK when Freedom Day is this year – isn’t it usually sometime in August?

No doubt the cast will tweet about it from the tour as it gets closer.

  • Anonymous

Bobbi, there’s a quite a bit of on screen time for Danny in the HGTV episode.

  • larc

If Colton is talking about a recording deal, I’m thinking it’s likely one of the UMG labels.  He says we “will find out soon.”  Unless UMG is releasing him early, they will have an exclusive option until at least late August.  I don’t think a third of a year is soon in anybody’s book.

  • Anonymous

If Pia was offered a record deal last year so quickly then it is a strong possibility that Colton could  be offered a deal. I think that Colton is more marketable than Pia ever was.

  • Anonymous

If it’s about a record deal, maybe Jimmy realized there is indeed a market in Christian music. Colton is VERY marketable in that genre. I have no doubt he’ll be a success there. However, I don’t think that’s the case. It might have something to do with a performance in the near future.

  • Anonymous

My guess is Colton gets to perform with Daughtry in the finale.  Maybe they’ll sing his favorite song “Gone Too Soon.”  lol

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_S3ZGXZCUE2YYOS7QV6QSTKM4SA buffynut2001

But isn’t opening for Nickelback quite a step down for Daughtry? Ya, they’ve done it before but that was before Daughtry did their small arena tour 2 yrs ago and their medium size venue solo tour right now.

  • Valentin432

Considering Jimmy has been working in the music industry for 40 years, I’m guessing he knows that there is a market for CCM, he also knows that it’s not in general maintream music.

  • Anonymous

Doncha jest hate that kind of tease?

  • Valentin432

They’re touring Europe so I guess it’s different from the last time they toured with Nickelback.

They’ll probably be able to perform in front of bigger crowds than if they toured by themselves.

  • Anonymous

But isn’t opening for Nickelback quite a step down for Daughtry? Ya, they’ve done it before but that was before Daughtry did their small arena tour 2 yrs ago and their medium size venue solo tour right now.

They didn’t do any of those tours in Europe, which is were they would be opening for Nickelback.  Daughtry is known in Europe, but not enough to do a headlining tour on the level that Nickelback is doing.

  • Anonymous

I agree.  As much as I like Colton, I don’t think he’ll get a mainstream record deal.  CCM is a small niche and doesn’t bring in the money on the same scale that Jimmy would want.

Colton would have to have made at least Top 4 to get signed by Jimmy IMO.

  • larc

Pia getting signed so soon caused a lot of buzz.  There’s not nearly as much of it now.  I haven’t been keeping up.  Has her album progressed much beyond the talking stage yet?  Her single “This Time” didn’t fare very well.

  • Anonymous

I never understood why Pia was signed so quickly. I never thought she was marketable and it turns out that she is not. I still think Colton will do well with whatever label he signs with. I think Jimmy does sign him.

  • Anonymous

Everyone keeps saying Colton is marketable. Who has sold a ton in the last two years who is similar to Colton? Are people thinking of bands like lifehouse that were big like 6 years ago?

My guess is Colton gets to perform with Daughtry in the finale.

Seeing as how there are 10 years of Idols, wouldn’t it be fun to see the top 10 do at least mini-duets with former Idols? Daughtry didn’t win, but Idol would have no problem treating them like they did.

If not, Cook would totally be a viable substitute since Colton likes him too. The other obvious top 10/Idol duets would be Joshua with Fantasia (they would tear up the stage and spit it out), Jordin and Jessica, P^2 and Lee. Then it gets tricky. Kelly is such a powerful singer, that she would blow most people off the stage. Erika has the same rocker/pop vibe, so that might work. Skylar could go with either Scotty or Carrie, so let’s give her Scotty since Carrie can also cover Pop (whereas Scotty might be difficult to pair with somebody else). Carrie and Hollie, Taylor and Heejun (it will be fun), Ruben and DeAndre (I think the contrasting R&B styles would really work together)  and that leaves Kris and Elise (although, I think Kris might work better with Colton and Cook with Elise)

  • escape

Last year, Jimmy signed the Top 3 and Pia.

He has said that he wanted to sign Phillip and Jessica.  I do think Colton has better odds to be signed than Josh, Hollie, Elise.

But they are going to follow protocol and not announce any deals until the Top 2 are signed.

    Q. You’re marketed as a country singer, and I understand that, but to my ears you’re more of a Texas blues-rock kind of guy.

    A. Thanks for saying that! I intend to bridge the gap between
people who like country music and  people who don’t like country music.
And I think I’m succeeding. (Laughs)

Gosh, I feel second hand embarrassment for people who keep harassing others thru social media. If they were teenagers, it would be more understandable, but a bunch grown ups tweeting/posting hate messages on facebook makes me sick.I hope Elise uses it as a fuel to compete rather than being sad for it.

I am glad to hear what I always thought about Casey J. but was too ignorant about country music to know if it was a valid thought: he is a “Texas Blues Rock”  type of musician.  My husband was a fan of that genre and he taught me to like it also.  Makes sense for me, because I am not a fan of what I think of as traditional country, and if Casey was to strongly in that camp I wouldn’t be a fan no matter how cute he is.

  • Anonymous

I HOPE that “Teach Me To Dance” is on that album! LOVE that song! It’s yummy. It reminds me a bit of “Waltz Across Texas”, but Taylor’s got way the better voice!

  • Anonymous

Saw that when it was on before. Very nice makeover!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/DJ4FPAE2BM4XDCNVQITJSS3S2Q Sue

I can’t see Interscope signing Colton. I think they’ll consider him (just because they can) but I see disagreement on direction during negotiations, much like what happened with James. IMO getting signed by a Christian label and doing Christian rock is his only hope for a career in music. He was never believable enough as an “indie/emo rocker” to get the attention of the rock world so it’s unlikely that an indie rock label like Wind-up Records will consider him if UMG passes on him. Jimmy jumped the gun signing Pia IMO as he still has nothing to show for her so I think he’s gonna be more cautious about who he signs this time around despite what he says on the show.

  • Anonymous

Marketable to a sizable niche is still marketable.  Lifehouse’s been doing pretty consistently well even with their recent albums.

  • Anonymous

Lifehouse is the premiere act in the genre of alt rock with christian themes that Colton seems to want to go into, and even they only opened with around 50,000 in 2010. They also haven’t had any mainstream radio hits in forever. Unless people think Colton is going to come in and immediately be at the top of his genre, I’m not sure where these predictions of huge success I am seeing are coming from. He can do modestly well, but most people off the show can say that too.

  • Anonymous

Oh I love Teach Me To Dance! I also hope that it’s on the new album (I think it is)!  Jason Deere is producing the album and he keeps hyping the album on Twitter! Sure it will be ready by June in time for Taylor’s Ballys gig!

  • Anonymous

A better duet would be Phillip and Taylor Hicks!  Taylor even said during one of the post idol interviews that Phillip reminds him of himself. The battle of the growls! lol

“I can’t see Interscope signing Colton. I think they’ll consider him
(just because they can) but I see disagreement on direction during
negotiations, much like what happened with James.”

I just checked this out, UMG has a Christian Music division, and interest in two imprints – and another possibility in the recently acquired EMI Nashville, with a Christian Music section, but they sound more hardcore than anything Colton has done. Unless he wants to release something like The Gospel According to Patti LaBelle (that’s a real title) – I don’t think that’s a fit.

Anyway, Colton had a neat little disclaimer tucked into the end of his last statement on that satellite interview.

“I just want to share it. Whether that’s through Christian music, secular music—whatever”

If Jimmy Iovine wants to sign him, I really don’t think a secular direction is going to be a problem for Colton, anymore than Gaga was, until it didn’t work. The real question is, does Jimmy really want to do that – or was it just talk?

    IMO. Of Course.

  • Anonymous

    Thanks usedtobelucy for posting this.

I do think CaseyJ is in the tradition of blues/rock. But he does have strong strands of country in his lyrics, his phrasing, even his raspy voice is very edgy country IMHO. So I don’t see him trying to wedge himself into a genre that doesn’t fit him. However, he is riding a line here between different flavors of music. He’s doing very well on the radio, so it seems he’s threading the needle between blues/rock and country very well so far.

    Q. What are your plans for the summer?

    A. I’m just going to get out there as much as possible, doing opening slots when I can and headlining club dates, hitting it hard and staying busy. Whether it’s 100 people or 10,000, it’s good to be in front of a crowd, getting my music heard.

This is a very smart strategy. And “as much as possible” is an understatement. He’s done over 30 shows in the past three months and so far, has another 30 some shows already scheduled thru the summer. May is completely filled – and I assume June/July/August will fill also. CaseyJ is building his fan base slowly but surely.

Did the album stop selling after the first week?  If it didn’t, this is a pretty good first week total for a niche act with some cross over appeal, but it doesn’t tell us how the album did overall.

Elise is really good at playing the victim. She tried to do that with her comments in front of millions of viewers the other night. I am not impressed nor do I feel bad for her.

  • heartly

Good eye there.  :)  I had a feeling she’d be at the game last night.  Speculating since you can only see the side of his head, but that looks to be Brandon sitting next to Narvel and I’m pretty sure that’s his daughter next to Kelly (on our right). Must’ve been a nice, and rare, day off for her yesterday because earlier in the day Reba had tweeted that she and Kelly had made a great team golfing.

Other Kelly news, in this radio interview with Valentine this week,  it’s back to work this weekend in Nashville for Duets.  She’s doing another round of auditions for her other person and let it slip that she already found her “guy” and said she’s nervous and excited for the show.  Nervous because she hasn’t done anything like this in 10 years and excited because she’s looking forward to singing harmony instead of the lead all the time.

She’s also been announced as one of the acts for CapitalFM’s Summertime Ball on June 9th in London.  That’ll coincide with the release of “Dark Side” on the 3rd over there.  There’s other unconfirmed reports that she’s going to be part of the Queen’s jubilee concert on June 4th.  It’s shaping up to be a very busy next 4 months for her.

It sucks that people hide behind the internet, and post mean things, but I’m over getting upset about this where idols and idol alums are concerned.  It’s part of the business.  They will have to deal with these people, who don’t have a lot going on in their lives, so they get upset when they see other people living their dreams.  I think it would be a big deal if it was just happening to the people from AI, but these little cyber bullies aren’t anything in comparison to what mega established artists have to deal with.  I don’t see Kanye West, Britney Spears, and others giving these people attention, or letting them stop them from living their dreams.

I was listening to that Kelly interview with Valentine yesterday and I’m not gonna lie, I was a little bummed hearing Kelly talking about a shorter set since she and The Fray are “co headlining”. I’m glad I drove out for her own tour though I’ll definitely catch her this summer too. I also definitely caught that inadvertent spoiler about who Kelly’d picked for Duets! I loved how she called Valentine an ass for doing his Texas accent imitation, that whole exchange was hilarious.

It sucks that people hide behind the internet, and post mean things, but I’m over getting upset about this where idols and idol alums are concerned.  It’s part of the business.

It would be terrific if the Idols being “protected” by these attackers on their peers would indicate some boundaries for their fans. I realize this can be an extremely delicate task, as one wants the loyalty of future buyers of albums and concert tickets (so making them feel lousy is a terrible idea and indicating to the media that one’s fans are misbehaving opens all sorts of nasty possibilities on the next junket to visit TMZ)… but Dixon of all people had some potential moral high ground here of the WWJD sort.

Maybe I’m excessively idealistic in thinking that Dixon’s tweeting something supportive of the remaining singers might have caused some of his more aggressive fans to stop and think… Maybe I’m just expecting too much that fans who identify as Christ-centered might behave with more charity than the average bear.

I do think it’s a genuinely difficult situation for the Idol being “supported” and should probably settle for his setting an example of general positivity and of not indulging in similar behavior (as, indeed, he did and doesn’t).

  • Anonymous

Exactly. I think you are right. I have a feeling that no deals will be announced this year until the top 2 are signed.

Actually the Top 2 last year were signed by UMG/Nashville, not Interscope. There are many labels under UMG that can promote you as much as Interscope. If Colton were signed with UMG,  doubt it’s Interscope. Anyway, the news aren’t about it, cause he can’t say anything until the tour is done.

  • Axxxel

Yeah for Chris Colfer… Must be nervwrecking for his, this  premiere… The panel discussion the next day must be fun…

Lea Michele and Darren Criss are so great together for romantic duets…When they sang “One hand, one heart” it gave me goosebumps and not because of the visual part (tame visualization of the “first time” of 2 couples). If that beautiful duet  was not the background, I would have had no idea what was going on… The dancing of both couples to “More than a woman” on Saturday Night Glee-ver was much much  sexier and romantic….

Hope Lea and Darren will sing together again at Glee’s charity concert during the summer hiatus.. Hope there will be a DVD of that charity concert…

Me too.  I’m thinking probably an hour
set for each, maybe just a little bit over that. Perhaps the last one on
bill that night for whatever concert will get an extra song or two.
Doing some quick thinking, she has at least 9 for sure songs and about 4
wildcards that could go either way. Maybe they’ll utilize the medley
concept again to knock off a few of those.  I hope they keep the fan
request idea going through this tour so that could be her “cover” slot
she always has.  And then hopefully the few remaining slots will be
    filled with Stronger songs.

I loved how she called Valentine an ass for doing his Texas accent imitation, that whole exchange was hilarious.

Haha.  I always love their interviews because they’re at ease and go way back together.  I forget the specifics of it now but it was something about being from the same area in Texas and the movie theater she used to work at before Idol.

The brilliant Jamie Cullum guesting on Casey Abrams album–very impressive! When I first saw what a fine straight up jazz musician Casey was (from some non-idol related you tubes) I hoped he would one day get to work with Cullum. Can’t wait!

Loved the highly special 4/20 edition (LOL) of Idol Hangover with Casey. It was most fun. He is so unassuming and just real. No pretense. Great humor and humble. Maybe even too humble. He’s certainly not into self-promotion–very casual. He might have to be more a little more assertive about his cd when it’s released.

Interesting when he talked about how it really helps to get the producers to notice u to get moved along in the idol process and some of the other tid-bits.

Leandro: Actually the Top 2 last year were signed by UMG/Nashville, not
    Interscope.

Scotty and Lauren are signed to Mercury Nashville/Interscope/19 Recordings. Interscope definitely has a piece of the pie.

I’ve always thought of CaseyJ as a Texas red dirt guy, and if there’s a mainstream genre that’s home for Texas red dirt, it’s definitely country. Good interview with CaseyJ. Thanks usedtobelucy for posting it. There’s never any guarantees from any path but I’m optimistic about CaseyJ being able to build more of a fanbase by hitting small venues and convincing them with his live chops. I also think it’d be cool to see a mainstream success story (however modest) come out of AI based on a long artist development period before the debut album.

Carrie’s fan club listening party for Blown Away should be starting in Nashville around now. They picked about 20-30 fan club members who’re getting to listen to the album in the studio where Carrie recorded it and they’ll get to meet Carrie too. Then on Monday night at 10 PM Eastern, all fan club members will have access to an online listening party for Blown Away where they play the album twice. Then, rumor has it Itunes will have the whole album up for streaming on Tuesday. Coldplay and The Fray did this too. That obviously means the album’ll leak but I think it’s still a good move to feature the album on Itunes and let people hear it.

Follow up tweet from the guy who was filming Carrie for ABC’s Nightline:

Carrie is awesome! So great to work with and so good on camera! She is a one take wonder!!

I wonder if Colton’s going to play intermission at a Preds game during round 2 of the playoffs? Or, maybe he’ll sing the national anthem at one of the games. The Preds did send a tweet out encouraging people to vote for him, describing him as a “long time game face painter.”

I’m not sure I’ll ever think of Taylor Hicks as country but I’m interested hearing him bring some country influence into his blue eyed soul, especially when it comes to the way he interprets songs. Teach Me To Dance is an encouraging indication of how that could work IMO.

Exactly, Cathy Plemel. That’s two disclaimers. If he is offered a deal from Iovine, all other things being equal, I don’t believe he will turn it down.

Lifehouse’s last album went gold, and sold 2M+ worldwide. I doubt Colton could reach that kind of success, but if his material is good, he could be moderately successful.

If I was making a movie about a country music star, I would cast Casey J. for the lead. To me he seems the epitome of what a country star should be.  Him on the road playing lots of different types of venues in an almost hardscrabble sort of way fits this image perfectly.  I can’t imagine him not ending up a huge success, he fits the role so perfectly.

Sentence two would be a huge breath of fresh air for the whole Idol enterprise.

Yes. ITA. Idols are put under soooo much pressure to produce and succeed right off the show that sometimes the quality of these singers is lost. Let’s be honest, anyone who makes it far on the show can sing. Can really sing. And many, many of them have been pursuing a music career for years and years. They have the talent and they have the chops. Why can’t they be allowed to blossom and grow for a bit before we all expect them to conquer the music world?

If CaseyJ succeeds and becomes a staple in the country music charts, he will have paved an entirely different path to success for many AI alums. That would be definitely a huge breath of fresh air.

Lifehouse is more than a niche artist and I don’t consider them a Christian band, no matter what Colton says.

They have often said they’re not a Christian band. I’ll take their word for it.

Did Colton say they are? Brian Mansfield says so in the interview but Colton talks more about Switchfoot. (I think Switchfoot does not identify as a Christian band, either.)

I agree, Lifehouse are not niche artists.

Btw, one of the singles from Smoke & Mirrors (Lifehouse’s 2010 CD, their latest) went to #12 on the HAC charts. It charted for months. This is a mainstream hit, so the claim that they have not had a mainstream hit “in years” isn’t accurate.

Lifehouse is successful. I’m not sure why it matters that they aren’t mega-mega-successful – I’m sure very few musicians think of their careers as a competition with other artists to make more, sell more, or be more famous. It’s casual observers who make such a big deal out of it.

I’m not a fan of Colton, too much. I like him, he seems genuine. I wish him luck.

I really can’t see Colton being signed by Jimmy. I actually think there’s a better chance he signs the other 6 before Colton. Jessica 100%, Phillip probably (but he’ll most likely make the finale so it wouldn’t matter anyway). Last week he said some things about Joshua that made me think he’d consider signing him. I think the exact quote was ‘as a record label if WE can find a song like that, WE will have a huge success’. A weird statement to make about somebody he has zero interest in signing. He seems to ‘get’ Elise, even when she’s doing awful. If Hollie could ever figure it out, she could be successful. Skylar is a wildcard: she’s got great potential, but do they want to add another country act so closely to the 2 they signed last year?

Colton just isn’t marketable in a mainstream way, AT ALL.

  • Incipit

“Maybe they could write a song called Right Here Waiting for you to Come Back to Me ;)”

Heh. That could work – as long as they add a chorus of “It Don’t Mean Nothin” till you sign it on the dotted line.’

Seriously, I’ve no idea what may come of this conversation between DavidC and Richard Marx, but it’s an interesting development to pop up on a Saturday afternoon, for sure.

  • Anonymous

My read on Colton is that he wants a career badly and will jump the Christian music ship fast if given an opportunity to be signed by a label that wants him in pop for example.  That is Ok, it is smart to grab things when one can.

  • Karen C

I thought Colton’s arrangement of September had a very current sound, though, to me it sounded like it could be a One Republic song, and his Bad Romance sounded like a  Muse song.  So if his original music is like that, I think he could be very marketable.  I actually think his sound was the most current of the contestants.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F3XJE5GRAUMYR7Y5RYZUW7SC4U md

Jimmy’s in an interesting position. He gets first dibs but can’t necessarily afford to sign everyone. From his POV, he would probably want PP and JS to finish in the Top 2 because those positions are guaranteed a contract and those two are the ones he seems to consider the most marketable. I think he appreciates Joshua as a singer and his comments indicate he might bet on his voice just as he did with Pia and Haley. Elise seems too niche, Hollie not distinctive enough. Skylar is out of his wheelhouse, but the industry makes more of its money now from live performances and she’s the best entertainer.

  • Anonymous

Here’s how I see the S11 contestants’ chances of getting signed by Jimmy:

    Yes-
    1.  Jessica
    2.  Phillip
    3.  Skylar

    Maybe-
    4.  Colton
    5.  Joshua
    6.  Elise

    No-
    7.  Hollie

Of course, it will depend on who ends up in the Top 2.

  • shell29

I’m not sure I’ll ever think of Taylor Hicks as country but I’m interested in hearing him bring some country influence into his blue eyed soul, especially when it comes to the way he interprets songs. Teach Me To Dance is an encouraging indication of how that could work IMO.

As someone who was a huge Taylor fan back when he competed on Idol and won (and afterwards),  I’ll never see him as a real country music artist.  I kinda feel the same about Casey J even though he’s doing OK in country radio so far, and I felt the same about Danny Gokey-didn’t really understand why they pushed him in the country direction and I still don’t.  Maybe Taylor will make this “country soul” thing work-I don’t know.  I’m just hoping he doesn’t go straight up twangy country with cheesy country lyrics and themes.  I’ll be disappointed if he plans to go straight up country for good because he thinks he’ll sell a few more albums that way.  I’m not saying that’s his motivation for doing a country album.  Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. I’ve never bought into the meme that Taylor is not “marketable” enough to make it on radio (mainstream or otherwise) and I’m not convinced that going “country” is his best and ONLY chance at radio airplay and major success as a recording artist.  Sometimes I wonder if that’s what he thinks.  I’ve heard other Taylor fans saying that but I hope he doesn’t believe that.

I’m sitting in the Vegas airport waiting for my flight back to L.A. after being at Pet-a-Palooza today. Tonight while meandering across cyberspace I stumbled across info that Colton did the Halestorm’s version of “Bad Romance” so it wasn’t even his own arrangement.

I’ve heard that Colton supposedly has connections to some of the biggest Christian music labels or producers in Nashville, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up signing with Word or some other major CCM label.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

I think Colton’s only original arrangement was in September, and it was the disaster that we saw.

  • Anonymous

To my knowledge, Colton’s made connections with Steven Curtis Chapman, Third Day, Lifehouse, Natalie Grant, Superchic[k], Of Mice & Men….

In the “After the Elimination” video at the AI website, Randy offered to connect him with MUTEMATH.

Colton’s also done a recording/song-writing session with Adam Watts (who’s produced/written for Jesse McCartney, Kelly Clarkson, Jeremy Camp, Joe Jonas, etc).

He’ll at least get interest from Christian labels, if nothing else.

  • justmefornow

    That Halestorm cover wasn’t bad.
The problem wasn’t that Colton did their version, it was that he is just not badass enough to attempt this cover. He came off unbelievable and rather lame.
That and the bad vocals on it was the kiss of death.

Lifehouse is not, and never has been, a Christian rock band. They are very much a mainstream HAC/rock band who used to get a fair amount of alt rock radio play but lately has been pretty confined to the HAC world. Although they certainly still do well in terms of touring, in terms of sales they were more popular 5+ years ago than they are now (they first hit it big in 2000 or 2001)

Creed hasn’t had crossover success for several years. Arms Wide Open, which was probably their biggest crossover hit, came out in 2001.

I had begun to type my opinion of what little I saw of his performance w/in that earlier post but was starting to get too longwinded so deleted that portion (in short, you stated my sentiments exactly!)

I actually didn’t see the whole performance. Because I’ve lost all interest in AI, my kids and sister-in-law were watching it in the next room while I was doing something else. When I heard Bad Romance being sung, my curiosity got the best of me so came into the LR to watch it but quickly lost interest (the reasons you stated) and left the room again. I never understood his appeal.

  • justmefornow

I think he’s even too lame for that version too. lol.
But since he made the comment about “metaling the snot out of it” before Wed. night, that fits in more with Halestorm’s version than that punkish one.

  • justmefornow

You haven’t really missed much this season. (Sorry, I don’t mean to offend anyone, JMO).
I had some interest early on with a girl, Erika, big voice, could have kicked some serious ass with a good choice of a rock song!
Then there was Heejun. He was a hoot! Beautiful tone in his voice, and more fun and personality in his pinky toe than this whole group left! lol

The rest now, I really don’t care who wins.
James is still my favorite Idol :)

  • sagi

Creed has had MAJOR success. As far as not crossing over in the past 10 years is due to the fact that controversy broke up the band and Strapp went out solo for awhile and the others formed Alter Bridge. They reunited in 09 to tour and start a new album and are currently working on another. “My Own Prison” is 6x Platinum, “Human Clay” is 11x platinum and 1x Diamond, “Weathered” is 6x platinum and world wide sales of 35million! Will they have as much success as their early years? Probably not, after all that happened. But who knows? at any rate, those sales are phenomenal.

  • Anonymous

Coming in late, but wanted to add that Lifehouse does not consider themselves to be a Christian band. The Lead singer (can’t think of his name at the moment) has said that the the minute you lable yourself as such, it closes doors for a lot of people and he doesn’t want that.

  • Karen C

Yeah, and Creed is now back on tour, because I heard they were coming to an arena near me.  So they must be pretty successful to be able to do a tour that includes arenas.

Funny thing is,  I was listening to the radio and I thought the dj said that Queen was coming to the arena, and got excited because I thought maybe Queen and Adam Lambert were going to do some shows here, and I’m a fan and would love to see that. Majorly fanning out because of that.  Then I realized it was Creed.

Like others have said, Lifehouse does not consider themselves to be a Christian band.  However, some of their early popularity derived from their work as a worship team at the Vineyard church in Malibu, which in turn led to their being played on CCM radio at the same time as they were hitting big on mainstream radio.  (I was a member of another Vineyard church at the time, and I remember the buzz that they generated among my and other similar churches.)  So, no matter what they choose to call themselves, historically, the band’s ties to that church helped them get a leg up in the business, because they were a secular band with conservative christian ties, so they had cross-over appeal.

At the time that Lifehouse was doing this, there were a number of bands that tried to break into mainstream music by first having a hit on CCM (see Sixpence None the Richer, for example), and the conservative church movement tended to see them as hypocritical, because they were just using CCM radio as a stepping stone onto mainstream radio.  I think what worked for Lifehouse is that they always said they weren’t a Christian band, so they hit first on mainstream radio and then crossed over to CCM, because their history of work within the church and the generally non-controversial nature of their music meant that they were a secular band that Christians felt comfortable supporting.

Colton doesn’t seem to be trying to go the Lifehouse route.  He has said he wants to be a CCM artist, so he’s putting himself in that niche, rather than separating himself from it the way Lifehouse did.

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

Yeah, and Creed is now back on tour, because I heard they were coming to an arena near me.  So they must be pretty successful to be able to do a tour that includes arenas.

The schtick with Creed’s tour is that in select cities, the band will play its 1997 album (6x platinum) and its 1999 album (11x platinum) on consecutive nights. This pretty openly makes Creed a “heritage” artist that sells big tours based on its success of 15 years ago. As a means of making a living, it’s nice work if you can get it — but as a strategy, it’s irrelevant to a new artist launching his debut album.

“Colton just isn’t marketable in a mainstream way, AT ALL.”

Well, things are slowly slowly changing in the music biz, it seems — to a less “you gotta be a million-seller to be worth it” frame of mind. …. Maybe Jimmy is mulling the idea that the future will be a little less centralized and have room for making money when you’re not a mainstream superstar …. Plus, I think he did say something about Colton as a songwriter. They like having songwriters on their roster. Cause there’s some money in that, too. heh.

The business world is changing, with the Internet and such. I wouldn’t be surprised at their trying anything at this point.

  • AllenTX

If James is smart, he should learn a good lesson from all the previous idols. Don’t do a lengthy tour, especially opening for others to support a so so debut album. It doesn’t pay. I doubted it back when people were claiming how many new fans kris picket up on the tour. If it didn’t help selling his first album which he was touring for, I doubt he can count on those new fans to rush out to buy his new single or album. He should have focused on his second album and got it out as soon as possible. Or maybe just focus on getting one big potential radio hit. The idol ride won’t be there anymore to benefit the sophomore album and like any new artist, you have to get at least one great song, even a good one won’t do. To be honest, I’m quite disappointed at some idols, Cook, Archie, now Kris and Adam, I mean, I give you a pass on your debut, because we all know the deal with that, but after almost 3 years, and this is the best you can come up with? I’m not asking something like getting 7 #1 hits, just one, one top 10 pop hit. Instead we’re getting to root for it to break top40 on HAC format, LOL.

    Interesting comments Shell!

In my opinion the reason why some of these artists ‘Go Country’ is because of the narrowly defined genres on radio and in marketing today.  Music is increasingly more big business and out for survival, for multiple reasons. Back in the day (70′s) you’d have guys who are really Blue Eyed Soul like Taylor and Danny and Blues like CJ on mainstream radio.  But now- Its primarily Pop, Country, Alt Rock and Soft Rock for mainstream.

I think the reason they “Go Country” is  because the history of Country is intertwined with many disciplines that are a part of it- it is fascinating to go to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and see the early Gospel and Soul singers that influenced Country, as well as Rock.  Look at the success of Lionel Richie and Darius Rucker as Soul guys singing Country.  Danny Gokey just presented an award at the Dove Awards with Ricky Skaggs-( a famous country/gospel singer) to Best Christian Male Vocalist.

And I think most Country music listeners want it.  Country Radio wouldn’t play pure pop songs like Glorianna’s “Kiss You” (sure to be a big hit and probably cross over too) and Carrie’s “Good Girl” if listeners didn’t buy those songs.  Or some of the pure Rock songs that get played.  There will always be a place for Traditional Twangy Country of course, no doubt (and GOOD traditional songs have grown on me too) but listeners want variety, so its understandable, IMO, why singers with versatile voices like Taylor, Danny and CJ would enter the fray.

  • Anonymous

I actually get what you are saying – 4 extremely talented guys, none of whom have reached the heights they are capable of, iIMO. On the otherhand, many of the things you described were out if their control. Single choices, how many singles, and how hard they are pushed are out of these guys control. It has become pretty obvious that Jive and RCA has a specific way of handling Idols, and frankly it doesn’t seem to be working so far. In particular RCA seems to have squandered the succcess that Adam and Cook achieved with their first albums. Although I still have high hopes for Trespassing. Like Cook’s album, there are some great songs on there, they just have to be heard.

  • justmefornow

I think you are right. And I do think James is smart and is on the right track. This tour, I believe, is rather short, just a few months. He definitely picked the right band, they are writing new material while on tour, and he is planning a new album already. Smart.

The next album will be way heavier I’m guessing, definitely harder rock/metal.
I think he knows about striking while the iron is hot. He got MOABD out fast, vocals in two weeks.

Right now though, he needs to work on making beleivers out of potential new metal fans, that’s not going to be so easy. I think that’s why the band is mixing in covers with some of their harder songs from MOABD. Even the lighter songs are being covered heavier live.
So far they’ve gotten a good reception from the crowds on tour, so I’m hopeful.

And new material can’t come out soon enough for this fan :)

All the reason more why Colton Dixon should stay with his passion of CCM.  Mandisa has done quite well with the genre and I can see the same thing happening with Colton.

I still have high hopes for Trespassing too.  It is an excellent album far, far above average.  Radio play as usual is the key, and while that has not been good this era my feeling is that it will start kicking in soon.  That arduous  tour and Spring radio concerts will be getting results soon, or at least that is my hope.

  • Nele621

What’s the alternative if you don’t open for a big-name band for most of a tour? Headline a tour with just a couple hundred people at ea venue? Daughtry started opening, and then his first tour consisted of intimate venues. I don’t think you make much money in those small venues.

Kris’s TVOL is a great first song. It just needs better promotion. I don’t think  Cook and Adam’s first songs were very good. Cook had a lot of TV promo, and Adam did a lot of radio promo.

I do so love the bubble….as far as I am concerned until an Idolette has to go back to bartending, or selling shoes/paint, or being in the chorus of a broadway show, or delivering pizza they are really doing alright in the tough, tough world of the music industry.

Having a number 1 pop tune is gravy on the potatoes but I can name you hundreds of “top tier” singers that have never debuted #1, had a #1 hit, had successive gold or platinum albums.  The music business isn’t as cut and dried as the bubble sometimes thinks it is where you are either number 1 or you are nobody.  I may not always fan every Idol (there are some that leave me shaking my head way too much) but I have to give them kudos for being able to maintain a presence in their chosen field.  As long as singing puts those potatoes on the table these guys are successful.

My radio station has “Song that never reached number one” segment every day, playing such songs. And every time I’m surprised “This song wasn’t number one? But it’s so popular, everybody knows it.” So, I totally agree with you.

Probably, but is that fair to tease Kris’ fans like that (not that I’m complaining). Basically she was saying “You can only look, but you can’t have him”. :DDD

shell29: I’ve never bought into the
meme that Taylor is not “marketable” enough to make it on radio
(mainstream or otherwise) and I’m not convinced that going “country” is
his best and ONLY chance at radio airplay and major success as a
recording artist.  Sometimes I wonder if that’s what he thinks.  I’ve
heard other Taylor fans saying that but I hope he doesn’t believe that.

To be quite honest I don’t see Taylor going much of anywhere on country radio, even today’s country radio which doesn’t seem to have a lot of room for traditional country. If you’re not already a familiar act on the format, I think there’s extra skepticism that gets applied to people perceived as “going country” instead of naturally being country and Taylor like Danny would be one of those perceived as going country. Whereas with CaseyJ his background always had more country than he showed on AI and it’s translated into a credible country/pop/soul/Southern rock/blues album.

I think Taylor’s a savvy enough guy to know what it would take to get onto mainstream radio. Country radio is definitely the mainstream format most open to independent labels but still, Taylor’s smart enough to know there’d be extra barriers for somebody like him at country radio. It’s not that he’d have to change a whole lot about his sound to get onto country radio, it’s more about imaging and country radio not being likely to see him as an asset to the format. And, he’d have a little bit of that “going country” stigma since I don’t think there’s widespread awareness of what he’s been up to since parting ways with Arista. I’m not necessarily defending that thinking, but I also don’t see Taylor as a country act.

My uneducated guess is Taylor’s more interested in tapping to the country market for access to all the live opportunities, the network of fairs and festivals and stuff like that, and the Nashville community of writers (who write more than just country). I do think his music’ll evolve with that experience but it’ll be more natural than him dressing up his songs with twang and pedal steel and suddenly proclaiming he’s a down home country boy.

That’s my hope.  I’m also skeptical about his chances of acceptance by country radio.  He tried putting some country instrumentals on Seven Mile Breakdown (from his last album)  in an attempt to get some country radio airplay and that didn’t turn out that great.  Plus he’s still seen by some as “Mr. Soul Patrol”-now you’re “country”?  I could see some having that attitude.   It’s going to be an uphill climb but he seems to be networking and making lots of connections in Nashville so it will be interesting to see how things turn out.

Woot… found a topic where posters were discussing James’ tour.

I talked to my brother tonight and I think he’s willing to go see James with me on Friday night, opening for Buckcherry at Pops, just across the river from St. Louis.  The catch is we can’t leave after James lol.  My brother is 6’6″ and 260 lbs, so I think he’ll make a nice bodyguard for the bad area of town.  His car is a little too new to be left in a parking lot over there though, unless he’s very brave!  I will be bringing the 20x zoom camera. :)

Give that camera to your brother. He’s nice and tall, he’ll get great shots!

Have you seen James live before? If not, wait til you hear that voice live, it’s tremendous!
    Have a great time!

Haha, I was thinking of giving him the camera.  It’s general admission, so he’ll have a much easier time seeing than me!  And he just stands there at concerts anyway, doesn’t even dance around.

I did see James on the American Idols tour last summer!  I shot videos whenever he was on stage.  Here is one, so you can see what my camera can do.  Sorry I couldn’t focus worth shit while he was walking through the crowd.

Thanks for that blast from the “summer” past!!

I had to play your video just now. Boy has he changed his look. lol.
Still has that same powerhouse of a voice though. I saw him about two weeks after that on the tour.
But I also saw him this past January, up close and personal so to speak. He’s the nicest, funniest guy too. I hope you get to meet him Friday.

Good thing your brother doesn’t like to dance, so he can video while you dance. haha.
If you’re like me I was rocking during his set the whole time.

    Have fun!

I will be in St. L visiting family that night and I won’t be able to go…..frustrating. Have your brother take great vids!

I agree, he was the most original of all of them this season IMO.
