‘American Idol’ Power List: Who’s your favorite with six weeks remaining?

1. Adam Lambert: (Last week: No. 1) After a merely mortal “Play That Funky Music,” the long-standing front-runner returned to his otherworldly heights with a haunting, moving “Mad World.” With six weeks remaining, it would almost take a case of massive self-implosion (or self-sabotage) to stop his march to the finale. Here’s hoping he doesn’t test that theory with a selection off the “Alvin and the Chipmunks” soundtrack on Tuesday!

Disney Sensation Demi Lovato To Tour With Idol Star David Archuleta

Disney sensation Demi Lovato will tour with American Idol runner-up David Archuleta on a tour this summer. Dates have yet to be announced but the two are scheduled to hit venues across the country starting in July.

Lovato just released her third single from her debut album, “Don’t Forget,” which debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200. She also recently released a deluxe edition of the album with new songs and is expected to release a new album by the end of summer.

She currently stars in Disney’s hit show “Sonny With a Chance” and will also be starring in this summer’s Disney Channel original movie, “Princess Protection Program.” A sequel to “Camp Rock,” which she starred in with the Jonas Brothers, is currently in the works. She also toured with the Jonas Brothers last summer.

Now is Lil Rounds’ moment to shine

Word on Internet Street this week: The theme for the next “American Idol” episode is songs from the movies, with Quentin Tarantino as a guest mentor.

Essentially what this means is another wide-open week in terms of song choices. Two weeks ago, contestants were allowed to choose virtually any song, as long as it was a popular download.

I see this as a make-or-break moment for Lil Rounds more than anyone else.

As much as I would like a shock winner in Idol 2009, I don’t think there will be one. Unless Kris or Matt step it up. Shame, I really prefer them over Adam. They’re really soulful and chill with their music. Kris is my favorite, so if he wins, I’ll be happy. Very happy. I just don’t really want Adam or Allison to win it all. I would hate to have another “rock star” American Idol, and it seems as though those two would go that route. I don’t like rock music very much. Allison over Adam, if we have to have a rock winner, because girl rockers are better than guy rockers. But if Adam wins, I won’t be too disappointed. Although he’s not my favorite, he’s still consistent, awesome, and humble. If he stopped wailing completely/took away the rocker persona, he’d probably gain a few of my votes.

Lil Rounds had better step it up this week. I love the girl, but she’s dropped the ball a lot lately. I still have faith in her, because I think she’s a great vocalist, but she needs to step it up. I’m thinking “Not Gon’ Cry” by Mary J. Blige from Waiting to Exhale. It might be strange to hear her censor “left your ass a long time ago” though.

Demi Lovato and David Archuleta? I like David Archuleta, but Demi is a no-no.

  • hardkandy

I still don’t think DA touring with Demi is such a good idea… she’s not that much popular than him, in fact I believe he’s actually more popular. If he was touring with a Disney star, I wish it’d be Miley instead – I like Demi more than her, but at least the girl is an actual superstar and be worth opening for in terms of how many of her fans can see him perform. And also, the contrast in his and Miley’s talent can hopefully convince Miley’s fans to seek out better music, heh.

  • kimberann

I think Danny will win this season.

And I think Julianne and Chuck make such a cute couple.

I still donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think DA touring with Demi is such a good ideaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not that much popular than him, in fact I believe heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s actually more popular.

With her new show on Disney (Sunny with a chance) her stock is rising among the squeaky clean teen scene. In raw numbers, she’s had more top 40 singles than he has, the Camp Rock soundtrack went platinum and her solo cd has sold almost as many copies as his did. I think it’s a smart pairing.

He has had one noteably bigger hit song than she has by a mile but she has a daily presence on the Disney Channel. It’s a cross-promotional goldmine. I could see them writing an episode of the show for David to be on.

Disclaimer: I’m not a fan of Demi’s music (or David’s) and neither is my tween but she does like her tv show.

  • Tess

I’m a bit sad that David A.’s peeps are really embracing the teen, tween fan group. I was hoping they would have enough intestinal fortitude to take it slow and easy and let him develop into an “adult” voice, but it looks like they took the easy way out. Hopefully, he can break out of the “teen heartthrob” mode when the time is right and doesn’t get buried in the graveyard of “teen stars”.

He is an awesome talent with great potential, but if you use “me” as any kind of measurement he has lost some of his universal appeal by choosing this route. Will be watching his progress but won’t be as invested as I once was.

  • brewster

    Tess,
I totally agree with you. So disappointing that Archuleta is taking the teen/tween route, but I guess they are going with the easy and predictable path. I was hoping that they would take advantage of Archuleta’s mature sound, but that, obviously, would have been bold and risky. What a shame. Using Archuleta’s beautiful voice and talent to entertain preteen girls is overkill.

  • hardkandy

well, maybe she might be more popular than him or they’re equal or whatever but it’s not like she’s miles ahead of him in popularity. And I think Camp Rock soundtrack went platinum mostly coz of the JoBros.
I just don’t see DA benefiting that much with this tour as opposed to him touring with someone like Miley.

  • JudyOhio

I think it’s a pretty normal thing for a teen to be singing teen songs and being a teen star is not such a bad thing. He was frowned on earlier for singing too adult songs about a life he hadn’t experienced yet, the thinking being that adults couldn’t/wouldn’t relate to the youngster that DA is. So imo this is a good route for him. Rather than losing ground in a Grobanish market, he can capitalize on the fact that he is young, cute, has a good voice, and can actually sing pop (which people thought he couldn’t do during his idol season).

He’s come a long way since “I need ya boo…….” LOL.

  • frogcooke

lol right. And david said recently in an interview he wants to relate to kids his age, he’s still young. etc etc. So as far as I look at it… it’s all good.

  • lefty

JudyOhio, I agree. There was a time when I would have been bothered by the DA/DL pairing, but not now. He is who he is: a teenager. I’m not sure what would be better for him at this point in time, really. I too would be a lot more bothered if he were doing a Groban kind of thing.

eta: frogcooke, I agree with you too. I’m tired of worrying. I’m just ready to wait and see.

I’ll add that I think David, at his age, will benefit the most from experience – experience with performing, interviewing, songwriting, and with life in general. Everything he’s done so far since AI has afforded him that, and this tour (as well as his UK tour) will do the same. It will all help him grow into a more mature artist over the next few years (at least I hope it will).

Demi Lovato Tour With David Archuleta, Plays With Jennifer Aniston’s Ex

It starts off talking about Demi and john mayer then says davids touring but there is also some interesting bit about Idol and when the flu was going around.

    -snip-

“Frantic producers trying to fight off the raging flu attack at American Idol went to incredible lengths – even beyond those surgical masks you say contestants wearing backstage – to keep the set germ-free and singers singing. They actually hired a young woman to walk around carrying a tray with plastic beverage containers imprinted with everyoneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s name, complete with personal plastic straws.”

The veteran gossip adds that the instructions were to “NEVER, EVER drink from anything but your labeled bottle, contestants were warned. Bottle Gal even carried Clorox wipes, swabbing down microphones whenever they were touched. Just like in a hospital, bottles of disinfectant hand sanitizer were everywhere, and contestants had to disinfect after touching anything.” Hey – the show must go on.

I totally agree. I think some people are also assuming that because he’s touring with Demi, his sound will somehow regress into bubblegum pop crap. I actually get the feeling (hearing him talk about the next album) that his sound will be more soulful, more mature. Fact is that if you put any kind of pop/pop-rock/R&B song on Radio Disney (clean songs) and promote it enough, it’ll hit with a younger demo. It’s really easy to underestimate the tastes of young people. They’re not a homogeneous group of mindless bubblegum soldiers.

If he keeps putting out music that is his style, playing to his strengths, the older fans will have something to hold on to. Jive may be focusing on a younger demographic, but David is just being David. With the voice he has it’s really hard for him to put out real, honest-to-goodness bubblegum (which, if you listen to Radio Disney on the weekends, you’ll understand what that is).

Even Demi herself is trying to go a more mature direction. Given that, and the fact that she’s starting to pop up everywhere nowadays, I see this as a perfect pairing. Their fan bases don’t overlap all that much because, although David has picked up a lot of younger fans post-Idol, he started out with an older mix of Idol fans. Jive had to build his younger fan base from scratch, which is why it seems that’s all their concentrating on–they’re still trying to build it. That demo seems to be far more recession-proof than older demos, likely because parents are more apt to spend on their kids than themselves.

BTW, Miley Cyrus isn’t touring this summer. She’s making a movie. And Jive was considering pairing David with Miley–but obviously that didn’t work.

  • BootStar

David may be legally an adult now, but he comes across as a much younger teen, and the tweenies love him, so why shouldn’t he embrace the whole Disney thing for the time being? He has genuine talent, so I think his future is bright if and when he’s ready to go more adult contemporary in several years. And hopefully he’ll have some money in the bank to help him go a more independent route if he so chooses. I don’t see him as ever being a huge Top 40 artist–he’s just too squeaky clean.

My son, a huge Archie fan, is 11 and he loves all those Disney shows, the JBros, Demi, Miley. Granted he’s not a typical young guy at all (his tastes definitely skew to more “girlie” things), but he definitely cues in on what’s hot with young tweens and teens. FWIW, his favorites right now on Idol are Allison and Adam. So Archie is in good company!

I’m sure mj mentioned this at some point, and I wasn’t paying attention, but Bucky Covington has a fairly prominent non-speaking role in the new Hannah Montana movie, which was the weekend’s big blockbuster. DS dragged me to that too. It was pretty cute, I must admit!

  • Tess

Don’t get me wrong…there is nothing wrong with the teen/tween route for David. I would have just preferred that he take the Taylor Swift route where she didn’t get herself linked to all the mania that is the “tween scene”. I’m not abandoning David, just won’t be going to his concert and no longer visit his fan sites. I’ll eagerly wait for album #2 (and his Christmas album) but my days of searching him out on YouTube and Google are behind me. It just seems so much same old, same old.

  • frogcooke

Bootstar.. I actually want to go see the HM movie… and im not the target age haha. It looks decent.

  • Jolene

I think the teen/tween market is exactly the right market for Archie right now, I’m not worried about him at all. Jive should have no problem promoting him to that audience and I’m sure the synergy with Disney won’t hurt.
I do think opening for Miley would have served him better than opening for Demi, but she is probably the next best thing considering Miley isn’t touring.

  • soundscene

And hopefully heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll have some money in the bank to help him go a more independent route if he so chooses. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t see him as ever being a huge Top 40 artistà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just too squeaky clean.

I don’t get the concept that squeaky clean = not mainstream. Sure, Top 40 pretty much reeks right now with novelty songs, and a lot of them are a tad un-squeaky, but I don’t think songs are mainstream because they or their artists are un-squeaky. I’ve come to believe that Top 40 really is more about how hard a label pushes a song, along with how much buzz a song has, rather than the image of the artist. Jive pushed Crush hard, the song had buzz, so David’s image (which was just ravaged by Idol at that point) wasn’t really a factor. Radio stations only knew him as ballad boy from American Idol, yet they still played this young pop song by him.

  • sma11ie

Bootstar.. I actually want to go see the HM movieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ and im not the target age haha. It looks decent.

Haha, me too. Oh, and I have friends in HS, and Demi seems pretty well-liked there, so she’s not just for tweens. She’s building buzz and starting to show up everywhere, which is a good sign. Anyway, I think it’s a good pairing and can do good things for Archie.

  • Trina

Q107 in Memphis had a contest for a private cook-out with DC the other day before his concert and they have some pics up. Alexis Grace is in a couple of them. She’s adorable!

  • KathyH

About Taylor Swift’s not-too-tween image: I’ve been a fan of hers for a while now, and I definitely felt the need to defend THAT choice before her second album did so well. I love her songwriting even if she does write to her age. (And along that note, I’ll add that her lyrics, IMO, are skewed even younger than David’s. (C’mon now: “You’ll be the prince and I’ll be the princess…”)

David has a young image in part because he makes rare personal choices that, to a fan, can come off as wisdom rather than immaturity. I say, more power to him. And I’m an adult fan who can’t imagine jumping off the train now, just when it’s starting to chug along…

  • Jolene

She’s obviously a lot more popular and successful than at first glace (because people are comparing her to Miley, after all)–girl just bought herself a $1.88 million home in Los Angeles. These kids are rolling in the dough because of all the cross-marketing. If Jive can get even half that for David, he’s pretty much set (since David is the type that will invest his funds rather than spend it lol).

Seriously Demi? You cannot sing. Take some notes during Archieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s set, mmmkay?

LOL. She has the potential to be a better singer–you can hear it at times. She just needs some lessons so she doesn’t shoot her voice out by the time she’s 18. At least she’s usually on pitch, even if she does scream her way through songs sometimes. Heh.

  • lefty

    I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t see him as ever being a huge Top 40 artistà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just too squeaky clean.

He may not, and that’s ok with me. None of my favorite singers are huge stars. I don’t think he aspires to be a superstar (in fact, he says just that in that terrific Star-central interview above). He says he just wants to make music. He doesn’t have to be a superstar to do that.

Having said that, I don’t think the squeaky-clean image is the issue. (Brooke is just as squeaky if you think about it, and no one ever seems to see it as a problem for her.) Good music is good music, and if it can transcend rotten personalities – even criminal records – it should be able to do the same with a lovely personality like DA’s. Besides, I think a lot of Archie’s wholesome image is related to his youthfulness, so some of that will fade away as he matures. I, personally, will miss it when it does.

Really, it all comes down to whether he can produce music that people enjoy. If he does (and I think he’s capable), and if luck is on his side, then he’ll be a success. Maybe not a superstar, but a success. I sure hope he can pull it off.

Bootstar, I think your son and mine could be BFFs. :happy_tb:

Eh. You’re nicer than me. All I hear is that over-affected faux-RAWK Disney screaming thing they all do. Just like with the Jonas Brothers, a lot of those songs would be really cute if someone else sang them.

Um, but she has a nice smile. Okay, I tried.

I think it’s a good thing for the Archster to do. Keeps his name out there in a market where he’s already pretty popular, rakes in some dough between albums, its all good. He had a pop hit once, I imagine PDs will give him a listen again when the time comes.

Eh. Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re nicer than me. All I hear is that over-affected faux-RAWK Disney screaming thing they all do. Just like with the Jonas Brothers, a lot of those songs would be really cute if someone else sang them.

lol. Ok, the Jonas Brothers sound like dying cats to me. Yes, their songs would sound a whole lot better if they weren’t singing them.

PDs should give David another chance when his second album is released. Jive will likely push that single harder than they obviously did ALTNOY. For whatever reason (who the heck knows), they didn’t put a hard sell on the song, which they really needed to do. David is too new of an artist to just float up the chart without a sell. First single off of a second album should be an entirely different situation. Jive has flops when they make mistakes or don’t push hard enough, but they’re also good at pulling their artists out of flops. See: Ciara.

  • cmom

I don’t get all this tween/teen distinction and the need to pigeonhole all these artists into either/or markets. Those artists who have come up through the ranks as very young tv stars are one thing (and some of them successfully break out of it (Justin T) but just because a person is a teenager doesn’t mean that they have to be all one thing or another. Demi is getting a lot of high school/college-age/young 20′s buzz lately (even from John Mayer) and David goes from being called too mature a singer to the opposite extreme. The fact is that when someone comes along with an amazing voice that essentially connects to all ages especially once they have heard him in person, that person can actually move in various directions. David is like the center of a wheel with spokes going outward in all directions. There is the serious song at a Governor’s event or at a ball game spoke of the wheel; there is the haunting “Don’t Let Go” spoke that speaks of lost love; there is the fun “Zero Gravity”/”Your Eyes Don’t Lie” spoke and other more youthful spokes, and the serious religious “Joyful, Joyful”, “Be Still My Soul” spoke. The thing about David is that the powers that be never seem to know where to put him because give him any type of song and he makes it great.

So now Jason is officially signed…I was waiting for the official announcement.

Here are the statuses of the Season 7 finalists (label/distributor):

    David C – RCA/Sony BMG

    David H – Genre/Bungalo/independent

  • soundscene

I thought Chikezie was signed–or there was a rumor he was signed…

  • KathyH

CMom — love that post. (And don’t forget the Spanish song spoke! Because I know about 20 words in Spanish and I want that song, now.)

  • Keel

I’m cracking up at the auto-targeted ad showing up on this blog: Utada’s Come Back To Me.

    Sorry! Wrong artist.

Soundscene:”Ok, the Jonas Brothers sound like dying cats to me. Yes, their songs would sound a whole lot better if they werenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t singing them.”

LOL. Seriously, I really don’t get the appeal. I think it helps Lovato a lot to have Archie on the bill. At least concert goers will hear some good music at the concert. Heh.

Archie is so young in his career. This is a great opportunity for him to tap further into this fanbase. If not now, when? Why not take advantage of the fact that he’s 18 years old? If he can sell tickets to those fans, then why not? It would be very hard for a 28 year old to do the same, so while Archie is 18, it’s fine. Jordin is opening for the Jonas Brothers – and it makes sense for her, too. Archie can cull from the tween market and expand the existing parents/pre-teens fanbase as well. And as his sound progresses and matures, he can tap into further into other demographics, too. Makes total sense. I don’t think he’s being pidgeon holed at all.

Again, Archie’s so talented and if his management and team are smart, they will continue to develop him and his overall positioning.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

    I thought Chikezie was signedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’or there was a rumor he was signedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

He was telling audiences back in December that he signed with Universal, but haven’t heard anything about it since.

Chikezie is recording an album right now. He’ll be flying back to LA in between dates of the Idols Spring break tour. Nothing official about a signing yet, though.

  • primeminister

Wait, so Jordin gets Alecia Keys, Jesse Mac, and the Jo Bros. Archie gets…Demi???

Demi sucks. She’s even less talented talented that Miley, in my opinion.

  • soundscene

Demi sucks. Sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s even less talented talented that Miley, in my opinion.

Errrrm, ok. I just remember those “performances” she put on during IGB last year. Yeah… ew. I’ve watched Demi’s performances and even though she can scream sometimes, she’s far more pleasing on the ears, and far easier to watch than Miley gyrating on stage.

Jordin gets Jesse M? That’s a plus? Jesse doesn’t sell well at all–in anything. Not even concert tickets. He’s had a couple of recent CHR hits that haven’t helped in that area.

  • Michelle

Alicia Keys was a coup for Jordin. So is JoBros (I guess) but that’s coming a full 2 years after her season. Also she did *win* and has done pretty well with her singles so I’d expect a little higher profile stuff for her vs Archie at this early stage of his career.

Demi’s up and coming and I suspect the Latino connection had something to do with teaming Archie up with her.

  • gingerly

So I’m confused. I’ve heard you need to have CHR hits. Then I’ve heard they don’t matter and you need to to sell out concerts. I’ve heard that album sales mean nothing…yeah, I’m confused.

  • soundscene

So Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m confused. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve heard you need to have CHR hits. Then Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve heard they donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t matter and you need to to sell out concerts. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve heard that album sales mean nothingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦yeah, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m confused.

Making money is the primary goal. One thing doesn’t mean everything–regardless of what that one thing is (concerts, album sales, single sales, etc.). If you can sell out arenas without CHR hits, then awesome–your label is not going to drop you because you’re making money for them. If you don’t sell out arenas but you sell a lot of albums–awesome, you’re making money. If you sell tons of merchandise and bag profitable endorsements but you don’t sell out arenas or go platinum in album sales–awesome, you’re making money. There are lots of different ways to be successful in the music industry that allow you to continue making music.

The Jonas Brothers haven’t had a top 10 hit, but they sell merchandise like mad and they sell out arenas. They’re not going anywhere. Meanwhile, every so often Jason Mraz gets a huge CHR hit that propels him through another 2 albums because he sold enough of that album and that single to make his label a tidy profit. Yet Jason Mraz doesn’t make boatloads off of merchandise, and still plays medium-sized venues.

  • gingerly

It seems to mean something when people can say one previous contestant is doing thus and so and another isn’t. I guess that is my point. My point is I find it all to be whatever spin works for you…not you specifically but you in the grand sense of the word.

I just can’t help but think that any of them are bemoaning being on Idol…that they all feel better off than they were before. To me that is the epitome of success and I think they’ve all made it. They are doing what they want to do and well I’m delighted for them (each and every one whether I’d buy their music or not).

American Idol David Cook To Perform At NYU – 15 Minutes of Fame

The Jonas Brothers havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t had a top 10 hit, but they sell merchandise like mad and they sell out arenas.

Not true- the Jonas Brothers have had a few top 10 hits:
Burnin’ Up went to #5 on the Hot 100 and #9 on the Pop chart.
Tonight reached #8 on the Hot 100.
This Is Me from the Camp Rock soundtrack reached #9 on the Hot 100.
A Little Bit Longer reached #11 on the Hot 100, barely missing the top 10.

They’ve had several more songs reach the teens and 20s on the Pop chart. While they don’t get Kelly Clarkson’s level of airplay, they do get airplay, and move millions of albums. Archuleta, with his 1 hit, can only dream about their level of radio, and overall, success. Radio seems to have abandoned him. Hopefully his worldwide sales will make up for it, since he’s not selling much here either.

I’m not Idol vs Idol fanwarring. I simply disagree with the idea that’s common here that Archuleta is somehow more talented than any other teen star out there who already has a thriving career. DA would be lucky to be as “untalented” as Nick Jonas.

I don’t know, I’m just not sure about the way David’s team is going about his career. As opposed to Jordin, he should be a piece of cake to market… but Jordin’s people seem to handle her career better.

  • soundscene

DA would be lucky to be as à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“untalentedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ as Nick Jonas.

Nick Jonas sounds like a dying cat when he sings. I’m not entirely sure how people can listen to an entire album with his voice on it. I don’t deny his talent as a musician, but he’s got a terrible voice.

And I was talking about top 10 on CHR–and they haven’t had any, yet they’ve been around a lot longer than David A. See, David A. has been around 9 months. The Jonas Brothers have been through 2 labels and, I think, 3 or 4 albums. Comparing their accomplishments to David A.’s accomplishments is highly premature.

As opposed to Jordin, he should be a piece of cake to marketà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ but Jordinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s people seem to handle her career better.

If you watch CHR charts, girl pop singers have an easier time of it than boy pop singers. There aren’t really a whole lot of male pop singers–Jesse M… and… um… Nick Lachey (who is only on Hot AC)… and… um… yeah, that’s about it. I never thought David would be easier to market than Jordin. He’s highly marketable in a lot of areas, yes. But Jordin will have an easier time in others. And Jordin had to wait a full 2 years to get on a Jonas Brothers tour (they only ever tour with girls, btw).

This has to do with opportunity, not who Jive feels is more worthy. There’s not a whole lot of people touring this summer that David can pair with. Miley was in contention until she decided not to do a summer tour in favor of a movie. If that had gone through, would the same sentiments be said about Jive mishandling his tour?

  • hardkandy

^^yes two years before touring with JoBros but before that she had the opportunity of touring with Alicia Keys. and they also got her to duet with Chris Brown that propelled her career to higher levels. i dunno, i feel like Jordin’s people are just handling her career better as a whole…they know she doesn’t have a big enough name all by herself but they associate her with all the right kinds of people. this past month we even saw her performing duets with two of the biggest male music stars right now… John Mayer and Josh Groban.
i just think after AI, David’s name had a thousand times more buzz than Jordin and it should’ve been easier to build upon that…if he was able to release No Air type of singles, was given the chance to work with an established star, i think things could’ve gone better.
but I’m still not calling it over on DA, he still has got ways to go…especially since Jordin wasn’t able to hit platinum with her album until just recently. but from this point forward, DA”s team need to make wise decisions in order to push his album towards the platinum mark and I just don’t think the tour with Demi lovato is one of those wise decisions.

  • soundscene

but Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m still not calling it over on DA, he still has got ways to goà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦especially since Jordin wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t able to hit platinum with her album until just recently. but from this point forward, DAà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ s team need to make wise decisions in order to push his album towards the platinum mark and I just donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think the tour with Demi lovato is one of those wise decisions.

I don’t think they care about pushing this album to platinum. I mean, I’m sure they would be happy if it got there, but it doesn’t seem like a main goal for them. Jive isn’t really all that into labels (more into profit)–they still haven’t certified Crush platinum. They take forever to certify stuff. Plus, David may be releasing a second album before the year is through. We have no clue who will be a part of that album.

Jordin didn’t get those huge duets with Groban and Mayer until this year. David A. has only been a pro artist for 9 months.

I love Jordin, but David still has twice the buzz she has. She’s touring the the JoBros but nobody is talking about her right now–even after 3 CHR hits. Meanwhile, David was at #15 on Nielson’s Buzz 100 yesterday, and #19 today. That’s the highest he’s ever been… even when his album was released. Even when Crush premiered on Z100. Even without the big names, David’s got buzz. He’s randomly mentioned in articles that have nothing to do with him–sports articles, gardening articles (seriously). He’s used as a pop culture reference. The kid is on track in the celebrity department. That has a lot to do with how, I guess, unusual he is as a celebrity, and also the fact that he’s constantly writing blogs and making vlogs, etc.

  • hardkandy

^^my point in referencing the Groban and Mayer duets is that Jordin’s people are doing something right to consistently get her gigs with the big guys ever since she started out… Chris Brown, Alicia Keys and now JoBros.
there’s no proof of whether Jive considers it a priority to get DA’s cd to platinum or not… so agree to disagree. i do believe that one way or another, it is a label’s priority to push as many albums as possible.
i don’t think we are going to agree here, but the bottomline is – i am not very pleased with the way DA”s career is handled…there are so many things that could’ve gone better, ie: the solo tour for me is not the brightest decision… he didn’t gain fans that way he just played to those he already had, also i would’ve chosen barriers as a single rather than ALTNOY. of course these are all my conjecure, as yours are yours.

    Mornin everyone –

Radio seems to have abandoned him.

I will agree that radio seems to have abandoned ALTNOY. That gives David one hit and one miss. I would at least like to see how a third single (pretty please, Jive???!?!?!) is received before assuming that David himself has been abandoned. It’s just a little too soon to call the game over, IMO.

    Lu, that vid was hysterical!

  • gingerly

    Hee. Gotta love Southwest Airlines!

  • Tess

David is a phenomenal talent with good performing skills but the first 9 months of his career have seemed to be frenetic and disjointed. I think David is not being handled with the finest of skills, and feel that he is being pushed, prodded, and poked without clear direction or goals. He has a great core group of absolutely loyal fans but I don’t think he has, yet, touched the non-AI populace other than the tween/teen segment. Sure, his concerts were sell-outs, but I would hazard a guess that the majority of the tickets were purchased by his already established loyal fan segment. I have yet to hear a David Archuleta spin on a local radio station, he didn’t sell out his concert here even though the venue was yards from one of the largest University populations in the nation, and most of his TV appearances have been on teeny-bopper related shows and stations. Without the thousands of votes cast by a relatively small dedicated fan base we wouldn’t have seen his Crush video, and his second video (as good as it is) has just disappeared.

Hopefully, if he is received well in the UK, he can establish some street cred and if he makes a “great” Christmas album that appeals to a broader audience than his first CD he will get some of his mojo back. I want nothing more than to see the Kid succeed, but I don’t think pairing him with a wan-a-be performer like Demi will be the break-out tool that we are hoping for.

  • frogcooke

Tess which concert was near you? The arizona one? Ithink that and the st george one(announced really late) were the only ones not to totally sell out. lol Anywys

May as well put it out there. David should be performing on AI next week. He wont be doing the first 2 tour dates in the uk.

  • IGetCranked

Right Frog.. the St. George concert was announced really late and added because of the demand. The venue has the capacity to hold 5K and it was 3/4 sold out. That is extremely good in my book.

Yes, I’m in sunny Arizona. David is really a non-entity here. Someone can correct me but I have never heard him on a local radio station and there wasn’t really any advertising for his concert here.

I am not dissing David…I love him and am looking forward to his future. But future is the operative word. Right now he is at a place I wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole. I’m not going to go to a place that I have always thought was stupid and degrading, even for David. The Teen/tween stuff has never been my gig, I find it so over commercialized and manipulative, and I truly feel sorry for parents whose kids get sucked into the whole thing.

Oh, tinawina. Oh dear. I just broke out into a cold sweat thinking of what you must have endured. The Doodlebops are so irritating, they actually make me a little bit angry.

You are mother of the year in my eyes for that one.

  • frogcooke

Well tess alot of the concerts epople had no idea he was playing.. locals would walk by and ask who was playing and be like i had no idea! lol so its not surprising. lol
I was just curious as to which one ya went lol

Heh. It could be worse. Last year my kids subjected me to a Doodlebops concert. Yes, you are free to pity me. Sigh.

Been there, done that, bought the overpriced merchandise. Also, have seen the Wiggles 2 times. My life is hard.

But, when it comes to actual music, I make my kids listen to the good stuff. They can watch Miley and Demi and the Jonas Bros on tv, but there’s not a chance in hell I’m buying that crap and pretending it’s good.

I make them listen to a lot of old stuff in the hopes that they’ll grow up with discerning taste in music. I think my brainwashing may actually be working since my 8 year old was completely stoked a few weeks ago because Stevie Wonder was on AI!

For me personally, I just don’t think you have to dumb down music for kids to enjoy it. So, no Kidzbop for us LOL. And, when I see my little ones in the backseat enjoying the musical stylings of Otis Redding, I’m pretty sure that I’m on the right track (for my family at least).

When they’re older and they reminisce about their first concert experience, I’m hoping it will be someone very cool and talented – not a Disney manufactured pop star.

Having said all that though, I think it’s a fine way for these kids to make a living. Plenty of people are interested in this kind of stuff.

Tess, Arizona is one of the states that wasn’t supportive of Crush , so I see where you are coming from. It’s weird how artists can be big in one area and not so much in another.

:lol_tb: I have a feeling you and I could share plenty of horrifying stories around kids entertainment. We need to have drinks sometime.

OMG I managed to avoid the Wiggles somehow. THANK GOD.

My husband and I were actually inspired to get one of those thingies where you can play your Ipod in the car after the Doodlebops phase hit full force. Before that, they would listen to some of the less offensive kids music stuff (Laurie Berkner, They Might Be Giants, etc) but in the past 10 months they’ve taken a hard turn towards Disney. My husband started putting them to sleep at night with Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis and Sarah Vaughn CDs. LOL. My own tipping point came when my 3 year old son pulled out his toy guitar and sang Secondhand Serenade at me (Tonight will be the night that I will fall for you..over again…).. And my daughter popped up singing Gives You Hell. LOL. Not cute coming out of the mouth of a 5 year old. Now they hear plenty of Lauryn Hill etc in the car with mommy instead of top 40 radio.

I actually tried to get them to watch TiVos of idol with me just so they could get exposed to more songs. It’s not working. Though my son does seem intrigued by Allison. I’m liking his taste in women. LOL. I did catch my daughter dancing to the Crush video one day though. She may be an Archie. Heh.

LOL Tinawina. Thanks to my husband, my son is a huge AC/DC fan. those were the first songs he learned the words to. If you could have seen the look on my mom’s face when her 4 year old grandson started singing “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap”. Priceless.

It’s a hard choice isn’t it? Public humiliation vs. Disney drivel.

You said it sister. All the good music is not appropriate for kids (or just over their heads, like TV On The Radio), and all the kid music sucks. I live for those moments when I can find a happy medium. We just listen to a lot of older music now. Mommy saves Amy Winehouse for when they go to sleep. Ha.

ETA: They do get to hear plenty of my Jason Mraz CD.

  • lefty

Actually, thanks to S7, I was able to get my kids into both the Beatles and Dolly Parton. My son especially likes the Beatles’ songs with psychedelic imagery. There are enough of those to put together a really, really good kids’ CD that won’t make you want to drive your minivan over a cliff.

(eta: SpenserJ, my proud moment came one day when my 7 year old daughter was listening to my iPod in the car and said, “Mommy, this song is really funny. It’s all about butts.” That would be Baby Got Back. Nice. I’ve since moved all of my workout music onto a shuffle that I keep all to myself.)

I am not dissing Davidà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦I love him and am looking forward to his future. But future is the operative word. Right now he is at a place I wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t touch with a ten foot pole. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not going to go to a place that I have always thought was stupid and degrading, even for David. The Teen/tween stuff has never been my gig, I find it so over commercialized and manipulative, and I truly feel sorry for parents whose kids get sucked into the whole thing.

Wow. Why does that make me so sad? :(

But what else were his people supposed to do? He didn’t seem to be sticking to the 18 and over crowd. His second single got virtually no airplay.

He culdn’t become Jason Mraz. Jason Mraz is a serious artist who has some serious respect on all grounds. Not to mention he writes all his music and is on an idependent label. Archie is on a major label, and respect? Hn. Two hits in five year is not going to cut it, especially since he isn’t a songwriter. If his next album flops (which it probably will), he will be dropped.

And “Buzz” will get you nowhere. Lindsay Lohan and Tara Reid have “buzz”. What’s the last successful movie they were in? Attention does not always equate to success.

So what do they do? Aim for the tweens. Brilliant. The tweens will accept him with with open arms. He won’t last long, but he may as well try that. There’s nothing else for him. Unless he does that Groban thing…

Jason Mraz is not on an independent label.
He’s with Atlantic Records, the one that signed Jason Castro.
