Idoloonies: Randy Gets Nasty, New Favorites Emerge, and the Pimping Begins on Idol

It’s only week two of American Idol‘s tenth season, but the show’s producers are already commissioning full symphonies and setting off fireworks displays to alert us to their personal favorite contestants. That’s okay, though, because Idol without viewer outrage/irritation/consternation would only be half the fun. And anyway, it’s not as if the Milwaukee and Nashville audition episodes weren’t filled to the rim with talented Golden Ticket recipients, right?

Civil War ‘Idol’ Contestant — A Real ‘Musket’ Man

The Civil War reenactor from last week’s episode of “American Idol” wasn’t joking — the guy actually pretends to be a soldier from the 1860s in his spare time … and TMZ has obtained a photo to prove it.

Sources in Nathaniel Jones’ Civil War reenactment group — called “Muskets and Memories” — tell TMZ, the 22-year-old from Wisconsin has attended the historical dramatizations for years with his family.

Aerosmith flies again

Despite speculation that Tyler’s new role on “Idol” would cause friction within the band and further delays in recording, Whitford said he is thrilled for the frontman and what the exposure will do for Aerosmith.

“I think he’s a great choice (for ‘Idol’),” he said. “I always told him he should be a stand-up comedian because he’s one of the funniest guys I’ve ever known in my life. I think people will see that as they get to know him better. He and J. Lo will bring a lot of authenticity to what they’re doing. And it’s going to expand our audience, for sure. People who would never think about seeing Aerosmith might change their minds after seeing him on TV.”

Tyler’s TV emergence coupled with Aerosmith’s inclusion in “Guitar Hero” is making for a welcome renaissance for the 40-year-old band.

‘Glee’ Cast Apologizes to Lindsay Lohan for Making Fun of Her

TMZ is reporting Lohan was out to dinner in West Hollywood and the cast (minus Lea Michele and Jane Lynch) walked up to Lohan and apologized to her for the jokes made where they referenced Lohan’s frequent trips to rehab.

The cast said that they did not mean to hurt her feelings and Lohan reportedly accepted their apology and everyone parted ways.

‘Glee’: Watch the Super Bowl episode’s boobalicious opening performance set to Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’ — EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

EW can EXCLUSIVELY reveal that the opening Cheerios dance number is set to Katy Perry’s “California Gurls.” It’s a veritable boob-a-palooza — with more bikinis than an episode of Jersey Shore — produced to keep eyes glued to the screen even after the big football game is done. “I think our opening number is going to retain a lot of male viewers,” says co-creator/executive producer Ian Brennan.

Meanwhile, “Idol” is now set for two hours on Thursday, March 3 at 8:00/7:00c – its first results show of the season.

Yep. That’s just what the fans have been hankering for. Longer elimination episodes. Why take just a half hour to drag out the results when one can take 2 hours? Surely the reason the show’s rating have been tanking is because Ryan hasn’t filled any time going to interview people at that nearby mall or taking those scintillating questions from the viewers at home.

The better have some former Idols perform on that show and the most epic group number ever.

  • Valentin432

Kirsten, that’s not just an elimination show, it’s the one where they are going from top 20 to the top 10, plus the judges will choose the wildcards.
So potentially, this means there will be some performances from people the judges want to see more of.

Still, two hours? If they are so wild and free with the two hour thing, they better give us our full compliment of songs this year. I want to see two songs each on final 5 and 4 and three songs on final 3 and 2 (and then they can move the stupid producer’s pick to the final 3 instead of having it take one choice away from the Idols at final 2).

So potentially, this means there will be some performances from people the judges want to see more of.

Translation: people the judges want to see more of = people the producers want to pimp

    Thanks for the info.

Just watched IdolLoonies. I think it was way better this week than last. I’m still not sold on the random people phoning in, but the people they got this week were more interesting than last week and the use of movie clips was much more judicious. I agreed with Slezak’s view on the Chris thing as well. LOL on the Steven Tyler love (“Wrong song Randy”). Hee.

They’re probably making the March 3 results show two hours long to show Justin Bieber’s new movie “Never Say Never” in it’s entirety ;)

  • Dakota01

CindyM, thanks for posting the pics. Baby Riff is adorable and Adam looks so happy!

  • Mary102

The Adam/baby pics are BEYOND adorable! So presh!

As for the 2 hr ep – that makes sense. I thought 1 hr was wayyy too short for all that they need to do, tbh. I mean, aren’t they scrunching what usually takes 3 weeks into just 1 week this year? They start off with top 20 on tuesday, whittle it down to top 10 on Thursday, and then have the judges pick the random wildcards. In S8 the wildcards alone took a whole hour to get through.

I’m guessing they’ll drag out the reveal of the top 10 for the first hour (have everyone stand up at a time while Ryan messes around with them, etc.), then have the judges announce 5 people or something to sing for a wildcard spot, and then pick the 2 or 3 or however many wildcards from that.

Haven’t watched this week’s Idoloonies yet, but I’m sooo glad Slezak is still doing those shows! They’re often a highlight of the season, particularly when the season and talent under-impress. Curious to hear what he has to say about Chris Medina.

I finally got to watch that ep the other night, and my take was, the producers actually handled the thing pretty well and tastefully. Chris IMMEDIATELY reminded me of Danny Gokey in how they set him up, and lastly, I wasn’t really all that impressed with Chris’s voice. His middle range is very non-descript and boring imo, though he has a nice upper range. (Kind of reminded me of Andrew Garcia in this respect). So we shall see.

Though if past sob stories and pimping have taught us anything, it’s that Chris could easily ride to top 7 on the strength of that story and having a pretty good voice alone.

  • artemis

Awwww, Cindy M, those pictures put a smile on my face. What a proud and happy bunch. I hope Adam gets to be a dad some day.

  • lucy

Still, two hours? If they are so wild and free with the two hour thing, they better give us our full compliment of songs this year.

Well, all it really means is that Fox can’t figure a better cost-benefit ratio for the second hour with one of its other hot shows, once sweeps month is over, right?

I kind of think this kind of thing is seldom a decision initiated by a show but way more likely a cost-benefit decision by a network. Idol = relatively cheap-to-make show with good ad-price numbers. So they can fill in this hour and get a decent return on the dollar and get a *new* episode of something for the lower price rather than a rerun.

Except for the Hell’s Kitchen guy, their other top shows are scripted, aren’t they? So they almost certainly would rather have Idol in the hour, if Idol has the tape to fill it, rather than running a new hour of one of the scripted shows — when they want to drag out those seasons to fill up May, the next sweeps month, with new episodes — or a rerun of one of those so soon.

Caveat: I don’t know nothin about no tv network, so this could all be cracked. But just based on business logic, I really doubt that expanding to the two hours was Idol’s call.

  • sr4mjc

I’m not sure if I’ll ever get used to the name IdolLoonies, but I like it.

2 hours is way too long for any results show. Yikes

Still, two hours? If they are so wild and free with the two hour thing, they better give us our full compliment of songs this year.

Yes, but then they might run over their time slot!

Maybe they will fill the time with a tour of the Coca Cola factory ala Mr. Rogers.

  • dy77

Aw, love the pictures of Adam (so cute with that bb, congratulations to him and the parents) and Kris (in Hawaii looking great to me on a cloudy yucky day where I am).

I don’t like the idea of two hour results show at all and I am a results show enthusiast believe it or not. The one up side I see is they will need to fill space; hopefully that will lead to more alumni appearing on it (which is my favorite part of results shows anyway).

  • gangreen29

I think they will spend the first hour announcing the top, and then doing the wildcard in the second hour. Making it two hours makes me think that they might even be bringing back non top 20 contestants for wildcard. The contestants were all told that they would remain wildcard eligible even after elimination in Hollywood, but I thought that was just to try to get them to not leak spoilers and be disqualified, especially because there wouldn’t have been time in an hour show to pick the top ten, introduce contestants who had been previously been eliminated, and then announce the wildcard. Now there seems to be enough time…

  • sr4mjc

I have no recollection of the contestant Slezak talked about in IdolLoonies, with the new cd. Aloha? Doesn’t ring a bell at all.

The pictures of Adam with his godson are adorable. Especially the first one where he’s got this “OMG, baby!” look on his face

The pictures of Kris and Katy are adorable, too. Love the “manly” (Katy’s not-serious description) tattoo and the grass skirt

As for a 2-hour results show — oh, hell no! Results shows are too long at 1/2 hour! Since it’s the first one with the big cutdown, I’ll give them a break and say 1 hour. But not 2 hours — that’s just going to be “let’s overemphasize everyone’s backstory as much as annoyingly possible”

  • Kris

Not surprising that David’s favorite places in Utah are restaurants.

I too would love it if longer results shows resulted in them bringing back former idols. I would especially love to see idols from the earlier seasons. I want to see and hear from the idols we don’t hear from a lot. Though AI probably can’t show them off as examples of what being on AI can do for your career, I’d love to see them on the show.

  • bjames

Thanks Eileen99! I was actually the one that wrote it. Ha, It’s an easy job when an Idol nerd has the assignment of writing a quick piece on a favorite contestant.

  • Incipit

Oops. Here I was thinking March 3 was the night to start watching, to eliminate the stuffery, puffery and aggravation. I guess that was a mite premature on my part, two hours of the producer’s stuff yet to go. OK, Next week it will be the real cast. Are we finally getting to the stuff one can vote on?

  • songsungblue

I always thought that Kris should have gone directly into Christian music. That’s an enormous market, and he could have made a huge splash.

  • Kirsten

I have no recollection of the contestant Slezak talked about in IdolLoonies, with the new cd. Aloha? Doesn’t ring a bell at all.

I was mystified as well so I did some googling. I think she was a season 4 semi-finalst (Aloha Mischeaux). She was giving the “pimp” spot on the Semi-Final 12 Female night (sang Beyonce’s “Work it Out”) and the “death” spot on Semi-Final 10 Female night (sang Alicia Keys “You Don’t Know My Name” and then was eliminated.

I’m thinking that she will have to become a hit on her own before Idol recognizes her again. For now, she’ll have to make due with Slezak’s promotion and what she can do on her own.

  • Valentin432

Aloha was on idolatry before, I think during season 7?
She’s part of Slezak’s favorites, I guess he keeps in touch with them. If we’re going to talk about pipe dreams and Slezak faves I would push for Mishavonna first.

  • sma11ie

I’m already really sick of the audition episodes, and I actually really *like* the new judges. WAY too much filler, too little singing. I might have to just catch the clips of the highlights from Idoloonies or something til we go live. I wish Jim did his 60 second recaps for the audition episodes. I need him to give me the goods in 60 seconds or less so I can stop watching the interminable sob stories.

Who are some notable artists still on their roster?

  • Incipit

I actually really *like* the new judges. WAY too much filler, too little singing.

Sma11ie, I ‘auditioned’ the judges on the first show – I am predisposed to like them, based on what we were shown – but everything in these shows is edited, so the verdict is suspended til the live performance shows. They have the possibility of being very good, maybe real critiques about the music and performance, with comments that would actually help a contestant, instead of the smart @ss drek and deliberate confusion of the past – but IDK how they will do, or what the contestants will do in that setting until the rubber hits the road, and that’s the ‘change’ I’m waiting to see. If it’s there, then Idol gets a viewer back. If not – thank the Lord for mj’s. *wink*
