Howard Stern Returning to America’s Got Talent

Radio DJ, Howard Stern, has inked a deal to return to the Simon Cowell-produced reality competition. Via Deadline:

Stern commanded a big salary (rumored to be $15 million) and made Talent move production from Los Angeles to New York to accommodate his day job as a radio talk show host. He didn’t bring a ratings boost to the veteran realty series but this past summer’s edition still finished as the the #1 summer broadcast series in adults 18-49 and total viewers. The Monday edition of Talent averaged a 3.4/10 in adults 18-49 and 11.1 million viewers overall, the Tuesday telecast earned a 3.4/10 in 18-49 and 11.7 million viewers and the Wednesday edition delivered a 2.9/8 in 18-49 and 10.4 million viewers, according to Nielsen.

To be honest, I’m surprised Howard is returning. It’s got to be a ton of extra work, and he didn’t really make that much of an impact on the show. The big paycheck must be worth it to him. Judge Sharon Osbourne will not be returning due a tiff with the network involving her son, Jack.

Great news! The best judge ever.

I love Howard, but I’m surprised too, MJ. Even though I’m a fan, I’m not sure that being a judge on AGT was a good fit for him. I saw an interview with Sharon Osbourne on Piers Morgan Tonight, and she said that she loved Howard and that he was actually a “big softie”. I’ve always thought so too. I guess that it must be the big paycheck that’s luring him back.

I enjoyed him last season, much to my surprise. I wonder who is replacing Sharon. I will miss her.

Those AGT ratings are impressive, especially with havoc in scheduling caused by the Summer Olympics. X-Factor would kill for those ratings, especially the 18-49. Without Howard, the show may have suffered the same ratings collapse as X-Factor.
