Glenn Beck? You know, that conservative pundit who was even too crazy for FOX news?  (The network let him go in 2010.) He’s on a mission to destroy the FOX TV show, Glee. Because there’s nothing more dangerous than a little TV show about singing high schoolers. (Via TalkingPointsMemo)

“A year ago I was watching the show ‘Glee’ with my wife and we watched it like this,” Beck said making the motion of his jaw dropping. “It’s horrifying some of the things that they’re teaching high schoolers. But it’s brilliantly done. It’s brilliantly done.”

“I said at the end of it, we lose,” he said. “There’s no way to beat that.”

Actually, Beck was frothing at the mouth about Glee last year. He watched the episode that ended with the kids performing “Sing” by My Chemical Romance. This totally freaked Beck out, for reasons I still don’t quite  understand. Beck accused Glee of spreading propaganda “This is propaganda and it’s an anthem, and it’s an anthem saying join us. How can you and I possibly win against that?”

I swear this guy is going to end up in a padded room, in a straight jacket muttering to himself.

Beck also said, “All of the characters are extremely good looking, extremely talented…Everybody in here is somebody that your kids would want to be like. Except everybody is sleeping with everybody else, there’s no values, self gratification.” There’s nothing that goes on in Glee that doesn’t happen in high schools every day. I’d say the depictions are fairly tame, in comparison. Beck is clueless. Or in deep denial.

Beck was feeling pretty helpless when he made those statements a year ago. But no more. He’s putting together his own Glee-like show. One that stands for conservative family values. He’s calling it the “the Oedipus Project,” “because the left will be making out with me,” he explained to BuzzFeed this week.  The plan is to produce a conservative alternative to “Glee” that is covert enough in its conservatism to not turn people away.

“We’ve spent a year now trying to put together a push-back with artists with music, but not the stereotypical conservative Lee Greenwood music,” he told the crowd at the Faith & Freedom Coalition conference in Washington Friday.

Well. Good luck with THAT.

So…who is going to broadcast Beck’s masterpiece? He’s not on broadcast TV anymore. His show is streamed online, so his chances of reaching as many people as Glee, which airs on network TV are pretty slim.

At any rate, he plans on debuting this “Oedipus Project” during a three-day “Restoring Love” extravaganza at Cowboy Stadium in Texas.

Gosh. I hope there is video.

Watch Beck talk about his war against Glee below.

What?  This makes no sense.  Nobody “lets” their kids be sexually active.  That is a choice the kid makes and I have serious doubts about how many ask Mommy and Daddy first.

And this seems to be what abstinence-only preachers don’t seem to realize.  I am totally against that approach but that sure the hell doesn’t mean I told my kids to go screw everything with a hole the second they had the chance.  Geezuz.  I educated all 5 of my kids about sex, starting with the older ones while I was pregnant with the younger ones.  And guess what?  Not a child out of wedlock from any of them.  No STDs.  No ruining their lives with an unwanted pregnancy.  With the oldest in their 40s now with children of their own, I am gratified to see them following my example and educating their children about the choices they can make, along with the consequences of each choice.

Fox did not renew his contract.  You want to call that him leaving, fine by me.  It’s wrong, but that’s okay.

Beck had lost all paying advertisers.  No network, including Fox, is going to keep a show that costs them money to run.  Ailes is an evil douchebag but he knows how to make money.

Oh, and why did Beck lose all paying advertisers?  I think that’s where the insanity comes into play.

People who blame the media and entertainment shows for the moral “corruption” of young people are just using them as a scapegoat for their own lack of responsible parental supervision of their own kids.

See, this is EXACTLY why I was so irritated by your tirade against Ryan Murphy. You’re right; it’s an innocent show about singing high schoolers. You, too, tried to make it into a political movement a few days ago when you were bashing Ryan Murphy for not making it gay enough; Glenn Beck has simply taken the rightest point of view.

Why not just practice what you preach and accept it for what it is: a TV show.

Tess, I do believe Glee added the “Christian Club” for that purpose.  They are shown praying and doing helpful things.  I think there was Quinn, Joe, Mercedes, and a few others.  I think there may be an emphasis around the Thanksgiving/Christmas holidays.

[I see this has been covered in following threads.]

I have asked on this forum whether the November election will be covered on Glee since Kurt’s father, Rep. Hummel will be running for office.

If Beck could find a few Idols to be on his teen show, some may watch.  Heaven forbid.

network tv is struggling these days, as is the music industry and print journalism.  the digital age has made it much harder for traditional media to survive.  we could think up lots of programs that could enlighten us more, but that’s not the goal of network tv, or most tv, for that matter.  the goal is to survive.  to survive, you must entertain.  sure, i’d love to see more shows featuring nice kids struggling with their daily lives and focusing on a moral message.  but that’s like saying i’d love big money to get out of goverment.  or that i would like a pony.  or less violence on tv, which bothers me personally.  i just don’t think that’s how the world works.  and i’d rather have 10 Glees than a censored media.

there is already a CBN and they do generate original programming.  it’s available to anyone who wants to watch.  if they came up with a show that was hugely successful, the entertainment industry would pay attention.  christian novels (eg the whole Left Behind thing) seem to have sold millions without any interference from anyone.  Jesus Take The Wheel is my favorite carrie underwood song.  so let’s not have a pity party over the marginalization of christians in america.  what sells, sells.  don’t blame the marketplace.

Which post are you talking about? Because I did no such thing, anywhere on this blog, ever.

The last thing I want Glee to become….THE VERY LAST THING is a show that advocates for this or that or the other thing. I bitch ANY TIME the show steps into preachy after-school special territory.

What I WANT it to do is portray real life relationships realistically and for ALL relationships to be portrayed equally. That’s it. I’ve said it over and over again, so I’m not sure how that message could be misconstrued.

My big beef with Ryan was his disingenuous attitude, and the way he rudely addressed Glee fans who wanted answers about perceived gay bias. Although I hope he’s pushing back at FOX without jeopardizing the show, I NEVER blamed him for censoring the show.

In fact, if you actually read my post on the Box Scene–I lay the blame for how gay couples are portrayed on Glee squarely at the feet of FOX.

Having said that? If you want to continue this conversation, we need to do it in the appropriate thread. This is not it.

Glenn Beck Plotting to Destroy Glee (Cray Cray) nowhere did he say he was plotting to destroy glee. He said he is developing programs to push back at glees type of programing. Pro religious shows compared to non religous shows.

I always find stuff like this interesting, because sometimes I’m not sure people even watch these shows or really consider the contexts. I mean on Glee, almost all the “good” teens are pretty virginal, or at least waited until they were in love and in a stable relationship to have sex. That or the sex they had (Finn with Santana) was portrayed as not a good thing. All the teen characters who were sexually “loose” were portrayed as bad or deeply troubled. They were not presented as role models in the least, they were usually the antagonists to the “good” kids. The only exception is maybe cheerleader Britney whose sex life is portrayed as an outgrowth of her stupidity, and heartthrob Blaine who as it turns out wasn’t all that experienced.

I guess the objection is to teens having sex period, but honestly its not like they make promiscuous sex look like a great thing. And its also not like they don’t make settling down with one person out to be everyone’s eventual dream goal. This show portrays falling in love and becoming coupled and monogamous as the best thing in the world.

This is my problem with the crusades against “liberal hollywood”, they always pick the wrong targets. If you are going to accuse something of being amoral, them pick Jersey Shore or something where people really are fucking around with abandon. It’s like when Bill OReilly went after Ludacris (basically a guy whose whole persona is a funny shit talker) as opposed to an actual gangsta rapper who’s not trying to be funny. Or the outrage over Common at the White House, who’s a Bohemian nice guy all about anti-violence, when Jay-Z practically lives there. LOL

I have asked on this forum whether the November election will be covered on Glee since Kurt’s father, Rep. Hummel will be running for office.

My guess?  Unlikely.  I doubt the writers even care that Representatives have to be re-elected every two years.

If Beck could find a few Idols to be on his teen show, some may watch.  Heaven forbid.

Maybe Colton will make an appearance!
