    I love Janelle’s shirt.

I am a fan of Clay Aiken, but I am completely surprised. There have been many times where it made sense to bring him on to perform and promote. This reeks of desperation on Idol’s part. Like Clay tweetedd: “he’ll has frozen over”.

  • blackberryharvest

Talk about a blast from the past! Never thought I would see Clay back on Idol again. When was his last appearance?

  • http://twitter.com/starfishy2000 DD

That would be 2006 when he stole the thunder of the finale

  • http://www.facebook.com/lauren.dennis.75 Lauren Dennis

Hmm, clay had some pretty strong words about Idol bringing on all these celeb judges. I think he clowned them for just using it as a platform to promote themselves. I’d think with that said he’d boycott this season

  • Wfish88

No Crystal Bowersox :( ugh. Crystal acually has a album out. Clay will prob just sing a cover …

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=754136041 Jason Gorny

Wow I was not expecting Clay to come back. Why not have Demi Lovato perform Heart Attack or Paramore or even Olly Murs.

  • girlygirl

I’m only surprised because Clay doesn’t have anything to promote, as far as I know. But then again, Casey A performed a Beatles cover, so I’m guessing Clay will perform a cover that fits whatever next week’s theme is

  • abbysee

Maybe Clay will play the guitar? -_-

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=754136041 Jason Gorny

Also for the theme, I think it’s being changed… They talked about voting for a theme from AT&T Idol fan choice online. I voted for unplugged.

  • abbysee

The Sandecki debacle? Lol! Sandecki’ s reaction and Clay’ s New do caused quite a stir!

  • Latin2

Did it seem like Lazaro had a bad attitude in the end, or was it like a ‘defense mechanism’ reaction?

  • Latin2

I agree. Crystal has new music out there. She should be on.

  • macfae

ha ! I remember ” the hair “.. wasn’t the Kelly Ripa incident around the same time ?
I wasn’t watching idol until season 5 so I have little knowledge regarding Clay or Fantasia unless there is some unfortunate incident publicized.

  • http://twitter.com/BassCampbell bass

cant wait fantasia is so phenomenal and her new album “side effects of you” its gonna be brilliant

  • http://www.facebook.com/jennifer.woolley.338 Jennifer Woolley

    I don’t think idols desperate.

  • http://twitter.com/CH411 Charles Wiley

Actually he does. I’ll be watching to see which project, album or single he chooses to promote.

  • elliegrll

I voted for the guilty pleasure theme, since it’s the one that could result in the producers using some new and different songs.

  • http://twitter.com/CH411 Charles Wiley

Idol is showcasing their most successful alums and Clay is currently #4 so not showcasing him would be dumb.

  • http://twitter.com/anglophile4ever peonies@pearls

Fantasia and Clay Aiken..the state of NC connection. Interesting. I hope Fantasia sings something w/o screeching or Candace and Amber will def outshine her. I hope Clay has an upbeat/not cover song.

  • elliegrll

No offense to Clay, but there are a whole lot of idol alums who could bring in more viewers than Clay can. At this point he can barely draw a couple of thousand people to his shows, or get people to buy his albums.

  • http://twitter.com/anglophile4ever peonies@pearls

I think they still have 4 weeks to go. What makes you think Crystal won’t be on? I really enjoyed her on AI.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=754136041 Jason Gorny

i voted again haha. i picked that one. i could see some cool song choices from them

  • http://twitter.com/anglophile4ever peonies@pearls

haha…supposedly the themes are Divas and the year you were born. I guess he would go with the YHWB.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jennifer.woolley.338 Jennifer Woolley

What new projects does Clay have going on?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Laura-Corn/100001659368831 Laura Corn

Can this show get any more boring? Doubtful!

  • hellomusicgirl

I’m glad Idol is bringing back so many alums this year. Honestly it’s been annoying how they mostly overlooked alums in the past to bring in the flavor of the month to promote their new album that has nothing whatsoever to do with Idol. Most of those appearances didn’t do anything to increase ratings anyway. For me it makes much more sense to bring back contestants from past seasons and not just the same 3 or 4 that they have every year.

For regular watchers of the show, even if we didn’t consider that person a favorite, we’re familiar with them and find it interesting to see what they’re up to. And most of them can *gasp* actually sing live. ;)

  • http://twitter.com/CH411 Charles Wiley

He’s a much bigger draw than Fantasia, or many of the other returning alums this year. His successes are severely downplayed here, or completely ignored.

  • http://twitter.com/CH411 Charles Wiley

His latest single is an original song maybe he’ll sing that.

  • Axxxel

Yeah, Clay … show them how it’s done !!

  • Axxxel

Because American Idol wants to show off their own alumns…

  • Axxxel

So “Glee”…. it was a storyline on a recent episode of Glee…

  • blackberryharvest

What makes alumni performing on the show “boring?” I think its great!

  • Anny_nanny

Fantasia returns because it has a release. And I want to hear Crystal too.
I don’t care what Clay will sing, I want to hear a beautiful man’s voice every episode and I am glad that the Idol has a choice. Clay can sing what he considers necessary, I trust his choice.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

Nigel (and his interns) read the forums and Twitter. Bringing back the Idol alumn shows that Idol can make dreams come true. Period. What a great advertisemnt for the show! I hope Taylor Hicks and Adam Lambert will be coming back as well!

  • EB

    ‘FIRST-EVER ALL-FEMALE TOP 5…’

Yes, FOX press release writers, and that is SUCH a groundbreaking coincidence.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

What does Idol have that The Voice and X-Factor doesn’t? SUCCESS STORIES. What a great way to promote the show.

  • elliegrll

Nine years ago Clay was a bigger draw than Fantasia, but not now.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

Clay has a wonderful voice and I’m sure Fantasia will work on something which shows off her voice this time. It’s good to see the alums returning!

  • http://twitter.com/CH411 Charles Wiley

I’ll just bow out now and leave you to it.

  • springboard2

They want to remind us of the good old days, when the show was immensely successful, and Clay did very well just off the show.

And this season top 5 should appeal to those who loved the first seasons, may be more of them will stick to watching for the next few weeks.

  • http://twitter.com/CH411 Charles Wiley

Clay is the 4th biggest star to come from Idol. He is listed with Kelly, Carrie, JHud and Daughtry as the top 5 Idols of all time.

  • http://twitter.com/invisibleclay invisible

Clay is on the list of most successful and recognizable Idols. I think he is in 4th place.

  • EB

Which I realize and it is all well and good, but what I mean is, why now? He has nothing to promote that I know of and like someone mentioned here, what about all those times they could have asked him and didn’t… the timing is just weird.

  • Nadine_Bitch

Maybe she will be on. There are still few slot available for top 4 and 3.

  • Axxxel

So many alumns coming back this year in the result show.. Why don’t the producers ask at least one of them to be the mentor for a week ? Kelly, Carrie, Casey, now Fantasia and Clay ? It will only take a few day out of their busy schedules…

  • Nadine_Bitch

Oh he has new single? What song?

  • Axxxel

Dream: Crystal Bowersox on the final episode of Season 12, duetting wth Kree.

  • http://twitter.com/pokepikalem Le Viet Anh Nghi

Everyone is talking abt Clay and Fantasia here. Can we give a clap to that beautiful photo on top?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Krystina-Mae/1122591045 Krystina Mae

Ok, this is could be interesting…He doesnt have the greatest ties with Idol and Ryan. I’m gonna watch JUST to see history!

  • Axxxel

Maybe he will be the mentor of the contestants…sitting next to Jimmy.. Naaah.. too good to be true…

  • Axxxel

Just saw again the Sandecki act…that look on his face when he saw Clay.. He almost fell…so adorable… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcLssR0jAWY

  • Larc

I’d love seeing that list. Can you provide a link please?

  • taylor

Clay has a new single? Is it off of an album?

  • http://twitter.com/CH411 Charles Wiley

    Best Idol moment ever!

  • abbysee

I think that’s best. Fantasia won a Grammy two years ago. Maybe Clay can bring his? Fantasia is playing at The Beacon in NY Clay hasn’t been able to draw a crowd in even a venue that size in years. Fantasia has a large devoted following. Clay no longer can boast that. I hear even this theater thing hes doing at home is not putting Burt’s in the seats maybe idol can help with that. This isn’t him doing idol a favor this is idol rewarding him.

  • http://twitter.com/CH411 Charles Wiley

Clay played the Beacon in NYC for 3 consecutive nights.

Remember when Clay was on Idol season 3 and Fantasia with rest of the top 4 were backup singers for him? Good times!

    http://youtu.be/KSxlBiULCR4

  • LongKissGoodnight

It is probably not the most popular opinion, but I quite enjoy the fact that the gluttony of singing competitions ended up creating a sort of network allowing currant artist to perform their latest singles on TV outside of awards season.
For me it sort of builds the bridge between the inner bubble of the show and the actual music industry which alimonies are supposed to take by storm (in theory).
So as much as I appreciate an opportunely to see old contestant return to the show, the fact that idol seems to completely take itself from the market in that regard… It just feels as if show becomes even more of a thing in itself.

I hope Voice is going to bring stars and superstars to its elimination nights. It just feels more fresh and current that way.

  • http://twitter.com/Adamtopia Adamtopia

It looked like some kind of nervous response to what was happening. It must have been hard for him since the judges really did not seem to even consider saving him.

  • abbysee

Currently almost every idol that has been on the show this year is a bigger draw now. Scotty, Phillip, Casey James. Then all the female winners. Then there’s Adam, and Jhud. Were not talking 9years ago, but right now. Clay was successful but that was from early touring and Spamalot he hasn’t put together a body of work as a recording star to sustain his career. The Xmas Cd only could do but so much, his largest seller was pretty much crap.

  • Axxxel

Maybe Idol already spent too much on the judges and don’t have enough funds to get the stars to perform.

  • abbysee

Ummm. What year was that? How long can he feed off that? He couldn’t fill it one night now. All I’m saying was he was a big draw, but he’s not anymore.

  • http://twitter.com/CH411 Charles Wiley

You still mad because Clay is more successful?

  • http://twitter.com/CH411 Charles Wiley

    Yup. Still bitter.

  • hcpoirot

Bringing back the alumni was way for the producer not to lose more viewers and rating. They already know that its will be hard to increase the rating anymore even with top singers. Why not with the alumni. And try to hold on to the “die hard” Idol fans viewers who want to get nostalgia with Idol alumni.

Clay probably not a draw anymore but I bet you many Idol die hard fans will probably watch Clay sing rather than Crystal.

Now we only had to wait for Daughtry and J-Hud to perform.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

I consider Clay Aiken one of the feathers in Idols’ cap. He had a hit album, tours, appeared on TV and was delightful on Broadway. We don’t see anyone like that from the other Talent Related shows. Again, reminder that dreams can come true through American Idol..

  • http://twitter.com/CH411 Charles Wiley

Why would you say he is not a draw any more? Look at the flood of comments whenever there is an article about him. Fantasia who?

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

I have mentioned the details of Clay Aiken’s success. AGT can be proud of young Jackie Evancho. Her fifth album, “Songs From the Silver Screen,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Classical chart in October. She’s also set to make her film debut alongside Robert Redford, Susan Sarandon and Shia LaBoeuf in “The Company You Keep,” which comes out in April. That is impressive.

  • http://twitter.com/hovIand Vetle Hovland

I read on the website that people could pick a theme, but I guess that is for the week after Diva/Songs from the years you were born. The themes are “one hit-wonders”, “breakup songs”, “guilty pleasures”, “dedicated to someone special” and “unplugged”. I’m really leaning towards unplugged or guilty pleasures, but one hit-wonders could be cool too. I feel sorry for Angie and Amber. 1994 really don’t have a lot of great songs. :l 1990 and 1989 is alright.

  • http://twitter.com/hovIand Vetle Hovland

I agree. I just want Crystal Bowersox (or Kradison!). =(
Hell, bring on Crystal and have Kradison perform together. That would be epic!

  • fuzzywuzzy

The boxscores of ticket sales for concerts contradict that claim. Clay was very popular at the beginning of his career for a couple of years, but he never defined himself as a artist and in fact, has been the one Idol alum who has tried to continue what he did on the show – singing covers.

  • fuzzywuzzy

” I hear even this theater thing hes doing at home is not putting Burt’s in the seats maybe idol can help with that. This isn’t him doing idol a favor this is idol rewarding him.”

The first couple of shows are sold about 75%, but the remaining shows have not sold well. This is definitely Idol throwing Clay a bone. I doubt that it will help with ticket sales since the show is being produced by NC Theatre in Raleigh, and all of the locals have been aware of Clay’s appearance for weeks.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Clay is not more successful than Fantasia. He had a lot of commercial success in the first couple of years after Idol, but isn’t an artist who established himself in the industry.

  • fuzzywuzzy

“Clay played the Beacon in NYC for 3 consecutive nights.”

lol That was on his Christmas tour back in 2005, over 7 years ago! Even then, the attendance at those shows was hardly impressive, especially since the audience was mainly Claymates who went to all three shows:

    Boxscore:

    New York City NY….02-Dec-05………………………………………….

    New York City NY….03-Dec-05………………………………………….
    New York City NY….04-Dec-05….$348,954….5,107….8,682….58.8%….$68.33

As far as Fantasia singing “backup” for Clay? It appears that the tables have turned since she still has a viable recording career, her artistry has been acknowledged with a Grammy and she’s been the most successful Idol alum to star on Broadway.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Actually, in recent years, Clay has trouble drawing even a thousand people to his shows.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Probably true. In that sense, Clay has never really progressed beyond what he was on Idol. lol

  • fuzzywuzzy

He recently taped a pilot for a late night radio call-in show with his friend Quiana Parler, with his fans calling in. No news on whether this will be picked up for broadcast.

He’s going to appear in a production of the “Drowsy Chaperone” playing the “Man in Chair” produced by the North Carolina Theatre in Raleigh from May 7-12 (12 shows).

Other than that, nothing else has been announced.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Clay’s latest single was released over a year ago while he was on the Celebrity Apprentice.

  • Face

oh dear… all this whose snowflake is (or was) the most successful & relevant would be amusing… if it wasn’t so sad…

  • fuzzywuzzy

lol Comments on blogs are inversely correlated with the popularity of the Idol. I’ve noticed that usually, Kelly, Carrie and Daughtry receive the fewest comments.

  • sweetmm

We had been saying sausage feast for the past few years; could someone tell me what’s the term used for all girls i.e. opposite sausage feast? Loving the Top 5 <3

  • fuzzywuzzy

It would be an insult to the remaining contestants for Clay to be a mentor for them. lol

  • fuzzywuzzy

Clay does provide a nostalgia factor and he did very well commercially within the first couple of years after the show.

  • fuzzywuzzy

It’s an original song in the style of old standards called “Bring Back My Love” that was released over a year ago when Clay was on the Celebrity Apprentice.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKYEMKbvuKU

It’s very retro and snoozy. lol

  • kansasfemale

    Yuck

  • fuzzywuzzy

lol Clay would never boycott Idol, especially now when his career is failing and he desperately needs the exposure.

  • raminasr75

1994 was Mariah’s Music Box album , I wonder if Amber dares to tackle a Mariah song, I can totally see her picking one.

  • fuzzywuzzy

lol Michael Sandecki’s reaction made that moment a hoot!

  • fuzzywuzzy

I’m not sure that Clay will have a “choice” to sing whatever he wants. He will probably have to sing something that fits with the week’s theme.

  • irockhard

    Waffle fest.

  • abbysee

So that’s the new project? Hmmmmmm.

  • abbysee

    Nope, I can utilize fastforward.

  • Miz

    Me too. I want it.

  • jpfan2

What a throw back week this will be Diva music and Clay Aiken.

  • Miz

I voted for guilty pleasures. Mostly because I thought it could produce some funny results.

  • kayd23

I agree that Clay is in the top 5 Idols list. Clay is a very popular Idol. It is about time they have him back on the show. Not a Fantasia fan and never was one.

  • Miz

    Both are divas?

  • Miz

They don’t appear to be using mentors at all this year. So you can forget that.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Clay also taped a pilot for a radio show, is appearing in the “Drowsy Chaperone” and is conducting a “Master Class”. I posted about them here:

    http://www.mjsbigblog.com/fantasia-clay-aiken-perform-on-american-idol-top-5-results.htm#comment-860739449

  • http://twitter.com/Sassycatz Sassycatz

I say we just crown all five ladies THE American Idol, so then we’d have five female winners to match up with the five males people kept whining about to the point where we had to have a pretty lopsided season to create a course correction.

  • vdawg

I’m not crazy for Fantasia so I could skip this one, I wish they would bring back Taylor or Crystal this yr.

  • mmb

they don’t pay anything beyond scale for guest performers. this isn’t a money issue

  • fuzzywuzzy

It would be great to see Crystal and Taylor, especially since both have active careers. It would be nice promotion for Taylor’s ongoing Vegas show and Crystal’s new CD and single.

  • http://twitter.com/starfishy2000 DD

Then why have they waited 7 years to bring him back??

  • mmb

there have been lots of alums who have appeared over the years with no current single or album to promote. Clay can sing whatever he wants — something that fits with the theme, something from one of his albums etc. Over the years I can think of appearances by Archie, Cook, Kat, Constantine and others with nothing current to promote. Adam appeared to promote a charity single (but they never mentioned anything about the charity etc on air…) Given that we know they shot some film of Taylor and Adam (and J Hud?) it wouldn’t surprise me if they were on this season and they don’t have a current single to promote (although Adam was in the studio yesterday…but no way he has something ready in next few weeks)

  • sweetmm

    Thanks :)

  • http://twitter.com/starfishy2000 DD

Why, because the man can actually sing??

  • fuzzywuzzy

Clay is an example of a contestant who didn’t win but who had great commercial success for a short while from his exposure on the show. Idol wants to show that even its “losers” can be successful, in contrast to the other reality singing shows where even the winners aren’t successful (at least commercially).

  • fuzzywuzzy

That’s a really nice pic of the final 5.

  • mmb

Not a Clay fan but I think its great that they are having him back. He is certainly one of the shows post Idol success stories. People forget that for a few years after the show he wasn’t just big he was huge. And he is still making a good living in the entertainment industry 10 years later. He is certainly one of the most recognizable Idol alum names.

  • http://twitter.com/starfishy2000 DD

I think my comment was taken the wrong way. I am immensely thrilled they asked to Clay to be on American Idol. Any chance for people to hear that man sing is great! Because despite his lack of sales over the last few years, he can SING! However, Clay has practically been black balled from American Idol for the last 7 years. They did one small segment on him back when he did broadway. That’s it. And I have been a faithful viewer of this show until last season. Why all of a sudden are they asking him back? I get that they are bringing back a lot of the alumni, but they have done that before.

  • mmb

I guess time heals all wounds?????

  • Connie Stamley

Would love to see Mandisa again. She s had a big Christian music career.
I’d also like to see Diana and Ace perform a duet. She’s had a pretty successful stage career. How about Paul and Nicki Reed. They have new music out and might bring in some Twilight fans. I’m just drooling at the possibilities. Maybe Kellie and Derek can dance.;)

  • http://twitter.com/ladymctech ladymctech

That would be an awesome duet. And I hope the alumni performances continue at the finale. Didn’t Fantasia sing with Joshua Ledet last year?

  • fuzzywuzzy

Also, Grammy-winning artist, Broadway star and Season Three winner of AMERICAN IDOL, Fantasia, will perform her new single, “Lose To Win,” and Season Two runner-up Clay Aiken also will perform.

A pretty big contrast in the announcement of Fantasia vs. Clay.

  • fuzzywuzzy

It’s a really good pic of all of the final 5.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Clay faked playing the piano on one of his tours, so maybe he can fake playing the guitar? lol

  • Nadine_Bitch

LOL How’d you know that he’s faking it, Fuzzy;)

  • Nadine_Bitch

Over a year ago? I don’t think him singing it would help the song anything. My instinct says(which is always not right btw) he would sing a cover song from the Divas. ”My heart will go on”… just a guess.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Li-Wright/100001622678180 Li Wright

I feel sorry for Laz, but am pleased that he has overcome shyness and stuttering. That takes a lot. It was probably just too much for him, he wasn’t prepared, maybe if he had auditioned next year. The judges did him no favors by passing him through to the top 20.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Li-Wright/100001622678180 Li Wright

Well, I can certainly think of more deserving and “hit” Idols to bring back. For example, Jennifer hudson — oh, but she was on LAST year. It seems all the Idols they’re bringing back have CDs out at the same time; no?

  • Nadine_Bitch

Hoping too, though Adam would fly to China next week again attending the Chinese Music Chart Awards in Macau. Adam will perform 2 songs and is nominated for a category.

I’m not so certain if Adam will perform this season. If he will then I’m ecstatic if not, well, he’d been on the show for 3 consecutive years. It’s always good to share the platform with other alumni who haven’t been for many years;)

  • Nadine_Bitch

What list is this? Forbes? care to share a link?

  • zjzr

It is a waffle feast, haha. It reminds me of Survivor: One World – the women’s alliance (belonging to one original tribe) eliminating all of the boys in a row (excpet for that one Kat vote that didn’t happen here in AI12).

  • fuzzywuzzy

Clay admitted that he was faking playing the piano on tour on a fanclub chat. It was really hilarious because a lot of his fans were praising him for learning how to play the piano so well so quickly. lol

  • Face

clam bake… it’s even in urban dictionary… feel free to look it up…

  • fuzzywuzzy

I think that Clay would do a good job covering a “Diva” song. It would fit his voice and singing style, with his love for “glory notes”.

  • Liteasy

Idol taped Taylor’s show when they were in Vegas, so I don’t know why they didn’t show it while they were there.

  • Anny_nanny

    I believe he’ll do it.

  • Denise

Does anyone else think something is up with Idol? The extra week in the schedule…..the reappearance of most(if not all, by the end of the season) of the former winners…..the hint that a big announcement is coming…..

    Is this Idol’s last season?

  • phil_atlanta2

Idol used to bring back very few alums when it was drawing 20-30 million viewers because big names were lined up to appear for the exposure. Now that idol is fading fast they have to revert to showcasing their alums. They should have been doing that during their hey-day because successful alums is what would have kept the show true to its roots.

One good thing about falling ratings is that it might knock the smugness off Ryan Seacrest’s face and the whole show.

  • irockhard

Nope that’s the only term I know of in Idol circles. Though where I live we’d care it a “guava feast” LOL.

What a powerful group of ladies! This is like looking at Simon’s 5th Harmony on steroids. Not sure I’d pay for a ticket to see them in concert, but definitely would buy a CD or two.

Have you ever met someone who has been where you wanted to go and did what you wanted to do and told you and showed you by example what it took to be successful making the journey? These young ladies would benefit from a spa day- professional development workshop with Fantasia.

She is someone who had personally experienced overcoming her own obstacles (demons), and challenges, personally and professionally. She also keenly understands the mental and physical challenges in achieving goals and the angst that comes from snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory.

Then there’s this elephant in the room, the subject that comes up in code, usually around the word, “marketability”–and that is the perceptions and realities of race. Contrary to a current law suit, I’ve always thought Idol has a good history with its minority contestants and staff. When Fantasia was a contestant, she benefited greatly from Mrs Byrd’s counsel and direction. Something Amber and Candy do not have now, that Fantasia could offer. Black women carry the burden of multiple consciousness which influences every aspect of their professional lives. Multiple consciousness means that black women must be mindful of their professional identity, their gender and their race in navigating the pipeline to power, professional and personal satisfaction.

There’s an even more sensitive issue she can offer Abmer and Candy; the minefield of intraracial discrimination that centers on skin tone bias. The perception that light skin images are the primary images celebrated in Black media. They ignore dark skin beauty because in their minds dark skin is not marketable. They seem to ignore the stunning Viola Davis, the super model queen Naomi Campbell, the intelligent, graceful and beautiful First Lady Michelle Obama and many others?

She also understands first hand personal transitions, both career wise and geographical relocation, which also can be exciting but also very challenging. What also sets her apart from the rest? She knows the whole coaching philosophy of coming along side the contestants instead of walking ahead of , or talking down to them.

On another point to bring Clay back during Diva week is still a backhanded compliment. I’ve always thought he has been a good ambassador for Idol, and would make an excellent mentor.

  • alonzo7

I for one am looking forward to seeing Clay Aiken again-I know he had a falling out with AI but he had some of the best singing performances on the show.
Hope to see Adam, Taylor(doubtful as he was not a popular winner with TPTB),
, Crystal,Daughtry, and even Kris Allen. I enjoy the returning Alums.

  • http://twitter.com/Lutrell4 Ira

Agreed! It would not take a lot of effort to match mentors with their contestant kindred spirits. Would love to see the product of a Casey Abrams- Janelle collaboration.

  • http://twitter.com/Lutrell4 Ira

In many ways his responses reminded me of passive-aggressives that don’t know how to respond appropriately to conflict,

  • Denise

Taylor was already on this season, I think.

  • ANNIEBA

This gives me hope that Adam will perform even if he does not have anything to promote. Hope he will perform Cuckoo. He is in China again next but maybe closer to the finale?

  • fuzzywuzzy

They may be saving that footage for the video introduction when Taylor is on the show.

  • Allison

Yeah! Finally Clay is back. One of the best voices on Idol. I hope he belts out something fresh and fantastic and not “Unchained Melody” or “Without You” for the thousandth time.

  • HKfan

not me…out of the 2 I’d rather watch Crystal..

  • fuzzywuzzy

I think that he was in the audience and only acknowledged very briefly by Ryan when he announced his residency in Vegas.

  • perfectstorm

Clay is one of Idol’s success stories, so he deserves to come back.

  • mmb

that was last year. Taylor hasn’t been on this season either to perform or in the audience. But I think he did do some pre or post show interview with a tv stations or something. I do have a feeling he will be on to perform this year

  • curly_yenta

Maybe, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. He’s booked pretty solid for the entire month of April and May. He’s scheduled to be in Vegas next week for the rest of the month, except for Thurs, April 25 (but he’s booked to perform at the Newport Beach Film Fest that night). Maybe he’ll tape an appearance. Best we can hope for.

  • Erlie

Love all the top 5! They all look beautiful.

  • http://myspace.com/susanatfox sumidol

Awesome Clay Aiken, I am loving that but ewwww Fantasia, she has been a hot mess on any show I have seen her on in the past few years?!!

  • http://myspace.com/susanatfox sumidol

Oh I would love that too, so many I want him to bring back

  • http://myspace.com/susanatfox sumidol

NIgel PRETTY PLEASE WITH SUGAR ON TOP BRING BACK JASON CASTRO, I WOULD BE THE HAPPIEST PERSON EVER

  • http://myspace.com/susanatfox sumidol

haha, he really said that? I am sooooo happy he will be back on Idol, he was one of my favorite Idols!

  • Montavilla

It doesn’t have to bone-throwing. It might just be Idol bending its (unofficial) policy of reserving performance slots for Idols who have new albums/singles out in order to emphasize the area in which bitchslaps the other singing shows: its alumni.

Whether or not Clay is as successful now as he was nine years, the fact remains that he’s miles more successful than anyone who came out of X-Factor or The Voice. This season Idol is flaunting the fact that they have so many successful Idols that they can book two amazing performers on every results show without breaking a sweat. And, just for giggles, they can bring in a Canadian Idol with a recent huge hit to do their Coke song.

(Plus, I’ll bet this is a lot cheaper than booking Bieber or Gaga. They blew their budget on judges.)

I’m just glad we get to see some faces we haven’t seen in a while. I like Clay and I’m glad he and Idol got over whatever feud was going on. Loved seeing both Caseys. I didn’t really need to see Kat, because she’s on TV every week, but it was a nice way to acknowledge her achievements. I am very much hoping we get to hear Crystal.

  • http://myspace.com/susanatfox sumidol

Jason Castro, has he ever been back on, as a solo? I really would love him to return

  • bridgette12

Hot mess with Grammys, new album and ability to tour.

  • Montavilla

That’s great, but AGT is unrelated to Idol.

  • Montavilla

I noticed that, while David Hyde Pierce would play some classical snatch of music during his big song in Spamalot, Clay played a bit of “Chopsticks.” DHP has some serious piano chops. On Frasier, he would play the piano live, while Kelsey Grammer would

  • SnowFairy444

I don’t like Clay Aiken and never liked him, but good for him that he found some success after Idol. Apparantly, there is a market for crooners. Love Fantasia!!!!! She’s awesome!!!!!

  • Montavilla

Did he mean that he wouldn’t watch this year? Doesn’t he always never watch? In that infamous blog post in 2009, he said he only ever tuned in for a minute to see what the new set looked like.

  • Axxxel

Hopefullly Clay will do some coaching on Idol.

  • fuzzywuzzy

From what I’ve seen thus far, I don’t think that there’s really anything that Clay can coach these contestants on (maybe, he could have helped Lazaro). Idol has changed so much since he was on, and he hasn’t watched the show since S3, so I don’t think that he realizes how much it’s changed.

  • LeahKittyS

Yes! Actually, I think this year’s Top 10 is the most photogenic cast they’ve ever had. Can’t wait to go to the tour, if only to get that program to keep forever!

  • LeahKittyS

Uh-oh! Now that Lazaro’s gone, the haters are targeting Janelle! Why would they do that? I figured they’d go after Amber because she was his friend. But Janelle is handling it with grace and humor. Someone called her Snow Bunny and said she’s next, and she replied “OMG I love bunnies!” And to another rude commenter, she said “that’s okay :) God is so good and life is good and I’m praying for you.” Sass? Or a sign of good composure?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matteo-Rodrigo/1340430528 Matteo Rodrigo

Hope Fantasia doesn’t repeat the disaster of her last crazy appearance on Idol. Clay? He’s still in the music business??? Nigel, still no original themes so zzzzzZz….. and abreast calling then the Fab5 ugh…. so is the Save officially over now? They choose such awful guys that it’s the first time it wasn’t used at all. Kree and Candice should be F2 with Candice winning. Still wish producers would stop telling us who’s on top.. The mystery of it all was always one of the features of Idol. Can’t wait to read Lazaro’s exit interview and sees if he’s still off the plantation or if someone got to him about what she should say

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matteo-Rodrigo/1340430528 Matteo Rodrigo

It hadn’t helped ratings Burt I like it to o… better than random celebs.. Still wish they’d k do a group performance ala the voice.. Wonder who will be on the finale.. They should already be planning it… And also finale duets now they know so early on its 2girls. I still live the Melanie/josh duet from xf s1 finale

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matteo-Rodrigo/1340430528 Matteo Rodrigo

Can’t believe Josh doesn’t have an album out. Ib thought he was amazing last season.. Better than the other black rb makes from other seasons

  • bridgette12

Janelle can handle it by not engaging. What is wrong with these people, stay off of twitter, because the chances are pretty good, someone is going to be mean and nasty.

  • overthetop1

Clay might sing a song from the Drowsy Chaparone. He’s going to be in it in May in NC.

  • overthetop1

He’s going to be in a production of The Drowsy Chaperone in Raleigh, NC. May be the production will tour?

  • Larc

Since Idol crews shot video rumored to be for “Where They Are Now” segments that haven’t materialized so far, I’m thinking the footage could actually have been shot to play when those Idols perform on the show. Maybe Adam is scheduled for an Idol performance sometime between now and the finale, and that’s why they were shooting video at one of his concerts.

  • http://twitter.com/THEROCPRINCE Cory Patrick

Can’t wait to hear Fantasia! Clay, really? On diva night results. HA.

  • http://twitter.com/THEROCPRINCE Cory Patrick

I’m praying Candice can win, but she would need to first make it to finale night and then perform BEYOND amazing (including the finale pimp spot.)

  • http://twitter.com/THEROCPRINCE Cory Patrick

You mean people are actually mad Lazaro got eliminated? lol

  • http://twitter.com/THEROCPRINCE Cory Patrick

    kill me now.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Brian Mansfield wrote that the save can be used up to and including the top 5.

  • fuzzywuzzy

His role in the DC of “Man in Chair” is a non-singing role.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Plus, a universally acclaimed and award-winning performance in “The Color Purple” on Broadway.

  • Drew

Michael Sandecki wouldn’t have had that reaction if Clay hadn’t stepped out behind him and started singing. Clay was so gracious in motioning Sandecki to join in and sing along. Ryan had to pull Sandecki over to a stool and they turned off his mic while Clay continued to sing. It was the most memorable idol event ever.

  • Drew

No doubt. AI seemed to go through a period of time when they didn’t think their own past contestants were good enough to promote the show. The guest performers were all about promoting their own music and new albums because it was an easy way to reach a huge audience. Finally idol realizes is has something the other singing shows can’t match–contestants who have gone on to success in many areas, not just singing. Even though many people show a preference for some idol over others, it’s the combined success of all the idols that should be celebrated.

  • Drew

Clay has been very realistic about his career. He publicly stated in an interview (which I first saw on this site) that when you begin on the top filling arenas it’s very difficult to sustain that level of success. He’s happy to be making a living in the entertainment industry just as many other past idols are doing. They have smaller careers, but successful enough to keep doing what they enjoy. Not everyone has aspirations to be the next big thing.

  • fuzzywuzzy

“that when you begin on the top filling arenas it’s very difficult to sustain that level of success.”

The only time that Clay filled arenas was when he toured with Kelly. His first solo tour sold well, but he wasn’t selling out arenas. You are correct however, that Clay was very popular right off the show, but his popularity only lasted for a couple of years before it started noticeably waning.

  • fuzzywuzzy

“It was the most memorable idol event ever.”

Only to some people, almost all of whom are Claymates. lol

  • fuzzywuzzy

Do you honestly believe that Taylor would decline performing on Idol because he doesn’t want to miss one of his performances in “Vegas?

  • fuzzywuzzy

I doubt it. It’s being produced by in-house by the North Carolina Theatre which doesn’t produce touring shows.

  • Reflects On Life

What Fantasia & Clay have in common – they’ve both been on other reality shows since Idol. Fantasia had her own (didn’t she?), and Clay was on Celebrity Apprentice. Have any other idol finalists gone on to be on other reality shows?

  • blackberryharvest

I hope Voice is going to bring stars and superstars to its elimination nights.

Well if they brought in any of their alumni, viewers would say “who?” Most of the idol alumni brought in so far are recognized by the average viewer-even outside of the idol bubble.

  • fuzzywuzzy

“On the next live results show airing Thursday, April 18 (8:00-9:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed), one woman’s IDOL journey will end.

Does this suggest that the judges save has expired?

  • blackberryharvest

Big announcement? The big announcement is something positive. If they ended idol, I think they would announce it before the last season.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Kellie Pickler, this year on DWTS. Sanjaya was on a reality show called, “I’m a Celebrity …. get me out of here!”. lol

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%27m_a_Celebrity…Get_Me_Out_of_Here!_(U.S._TV_series)

  • blackberryharvest

I have to say by looking at the top 5 picture-I bet if you told ANYBODY in the idol bubble after Phillip’s win that the Season 12’s top 5 would be all girls, they would have laughed in your face. After Phillip won everybody was convinced that only WGWG would win. Those people who are boycotting the show because of WGWG winning are boycotting for nothing!

  • Reflects On Life

Oh, yes you are right. And I hear that Kellie’s doing an Amazing job on DWTS!

  • bridgette12

It’s not a matter of boycotting, Idol has gotten old and boring, there’s better things on tv to watch.

  • fuzzywuzzy

It would be great if Clay sang a new song (or a new cover) that fit with the “Diva” theme. I think that songs that need a big voice belting are the ones that suit Clay the best. But I agree, not UM or WY.

  • debk4142

I attended two of the Clay/Kelly concerts, and I can assure you that 80% of the fans there were Clay fans. That’s a fact, and she knew it. She was so fortunate to gather plenty of new fans from his group, simply because he felt she was his friend. It didn’t work the other way, of course. Clay will never be a Pop star. He never wanted that, and got no promotion from Idol or a label, so it’s good it was never a goal. His voice is beyond excellent, and his stage performing skills are top notch. Wish they had announced he was going to be on next week, as it would have been a ratings success. Most people remember him as outstanding, and loaded with charisma.

We all know the other elephant in the room that caused his fan base to dwindle. It’s a shame.

  • Daytripper73

I’ve been glad to see all the previous idols this season. It’s one of the things Nigel got right. I’d still like to see Jason Castro, Blake Lewis, Bo, Crystal, Mandisa, and Diana (Diana by herself, NOT with Ace).

  • blackberryharvest

Ok, that wasn’t my point. There were people who said they were boycotting the show because WGWG kept winning. I don’t care about the other reasons why people stopped watching.

And maybe this season is boring(although I think it might get better now), but the two seasons before were anything but boring.

  • blackberryharvest

Well I know there were people here who were voting for Lazaro just to “get back at the producers” for manipulating the season. I guess that didn’t work. #awkward.

  • guinness416

“I’m praying for you” sounds awfully like a Miss Manners-esque “well bless your heart” putdown :) I honestly don’t know how any of them do it. I suppose this engagement is part of the business they’re going into, and maybe the whole god squad thing helps but I’m pretty sure I would have an embarrassing twitter explosion if I were in their place. Do they get “guidance” from anyone at AI central on this?

  • guinness416

She’s got a pretty good shot though. Best thing that happened to Candice was not making the cut last year, she definitely wouldn’t have beaten PeePee or Jessica.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I attended two of the Clay/Kelly concerts, and I can assure you that 80% of the fans there were Clay fans. That’s a fact, and she knew it. She was so fortunate to gather plenty of new fans from his group, simply because he felt she was his friend. It didn’t work the other way, of course.

I also attended the Independence Tour and I don’t think that there’s any way to guestimate the proportion of fans who were there for Kelly or Clay. Plus, many Kelly fans boycotted the tour because of Clay. At the concerts that I attended a lot of Clay fans treated Kelly very rudely. Kelly’s popularity really took off with the success of the “Breakaway” era.

Clay will never be a Pop star. He never wanted that, and got no promotion from Idol or a label, so it’s good it was never a goal.

This is not true. Clay did get a lot of promotion from the label and his management, probably as much or more than Ruben. It’s a fallacy that lack of promotion was the problem. The facts are that Clay never established himself musically in the industry, and his admission that he would love to be on a show like Idol, singing covers, for the rest of his life is an indication why.

His voice is beyond excellent, and his stage performing skills are top notch.

He has a good voice, but his singing style, song interpretation abilities and performing skills have limited appeal. I think that he has a problem with choosing songs that he can sing well and that appeal to his fans (which is another reason for the decline in his commercial popularity).

Wish they had announced he was going to be on next week, as it would have been a ratings success. Most people remember him as outstanding, and loaded with charisma.

This may have been true at the beginning of his career, but since Clay has trouble selling a thousand seats to his shows now, there’s no way that his appearance will have any positive impact on a show that is still drawing 12+million viewers. Believing that Clay is a television ratings draw at this point in his career is simply ignoring reality.

We all know the other elephant in the room that caused his fan base to dwindle. It’s a shame.

Actually, Clay’s fanbase had declined substantially before he came out. His last CD for RCA of original material, “On My Way Here”, was released in May, 2008 and only sold 160,000 or so copies, so Clay had lost the majority of his fans prior to his coming out in People magazine in September, 2008. At that point, he had very little to lose career-wise in coming out.

  • EvenMoreron

Wow Clay and Fantasia. I was such a big Idol fan the first 3 seasons, love that Idol is getting to its roots. Idol was at such a peak when it was Ruben v. Clay, they even got their own Rolling Stone covers! I don’t know what’s more surprising– Clay performing or Ryan referencing Brian Dunkleman.

  • stargazed

It seems to me that if Clay weren’t such a popular Idol that no one would be talking about him. The boards and blogs are alive with Clay discussions. Whether one likes him or not, he’s buzzworthy and folks will be watching next week just to see him.

  • fuzzywuzzy

She is doing incredibly well. It’s a great appearance for her.

  • bridgette12

You might not care about the other reasons, but just because WGWG is no longer there, don’t mean those fans are going to come back when you still have other problems that need to be fixed that are ruining the show.

  • blackberryharvest

I was talking about the people who vowed to not watch the show again because of the WGWG issue. I’m not talking about anything else.

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

While I’m ordinarily a fan of not-engaging, sometimes it’s helpful to make it clear that one isn’t impressed by harassment. “I’m praying for you” is a perfectly lovely veiled putdown, as it exudes sweet composure (and also knocks back on their heels some of the overtly religious fans who are nonetheless… vehement.)

Yeah, Janelle Arthur needs to be careful not to get too pulled in to the twitspats… but I provisionally trust the judgment of anybody who can come up with “OMG I love bunnies!”

  • blackberryharvest

Wasn’t it Jessica Sierra or Nikki McKibbin on a celebrity rehab show also?

  • fuzzywuzzy

I don’t know. Did you google?

  • mjsbigblog

If anyone stole the thunder of the AI 5 finale, it was Prince. ;)

  • mjsbigblog

A polarizing contestant is going to create a ton of internet chatter. But “polarizing” does not equal “popular”. It could even be the opposite.

  • kay121

agreed. I went to a show at the staples center and it was 80% clay fans… more people were sitting for kelly and standing for clay.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I don’t know what happened to my response, but I’ll just say that I disagree with everything that you wrote, mainly because the facts do not support any of your opinions. lol

  • fuzzywuzzy

Estimates of the proportion of fans in a large arena who are there primarily for one performer are not possible to prove and are often biased.

  • HKfan

    i watched a lot of the I’m a Celebrity, get me out of here, with Sanjaya on it. He came across really well.;

  • http://www.facebook.com/jennifer.woolley.338 Jennifer Woolley

Well, since no WGWG were allowed on the show, isn’t it pretty obvious that one wasnt going to win? If they had had one on the show, I’d get your point.

  • bridgette12

Stuff like that happens when they rig the contest. WGWG was no factor because there was none.

  • curly_yenta

I would think he’d visit Idol if he could work it out with Caesars Entertainment, whom he under exclusive contract with. He’s scheduled to thru May at Paris with Thurs, the 25th the only day he’s not there (but IS booked at the Newport Film Festival in CA that night). Other than that he has no days off (that would coincide with an Idol appearance).

Canceling a show in Vegas after tickets have been sold is considered not cool.

  • Karen C

It was both, actually, not at the same time though

  • Allison

Not so. I went to 2 of the Independent tour shows in arenas and have a friend who went to several. It was obvious from the applause and the standing ovations that the vast majority were there for Clay, not Kelly. And I like them both.

Clay’s solo tour in 2004 and his jukebox tour in 2005 played good-size arenas as well as outdoor ‘sheds’. I recall him playing the Pepsi arena in Albany, War Memorial in Syracuse, Mohegan Sun, and the large Borgata theater.

Facts show he put people in the seats for “Spamalot’. I have no explanation for the lack of sales for “On May Way Here”, as it came after the 2 sucessful “Spamalot” runs, except perhaps the material was too personal and way different from Idol pop and covers.

He’ll bring eyes who have abandoned Idol back to Idol.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I tuned into one episode (couldn’t stand Stephen Baldwin and Heidi and Spencer), but I agree that Sanjaya came across very well. He also earned my respect by the way that he behaved on Idol, despite a lot of negativity thrown at him. He had a lot of class, maturity and guts especially since he was so young.

  • Allison

Yea if that’s how they phrased it, it’s pretty crummy.

  • Allison

That makes no sense. Kelly Carrie Daughtry and Clay, and Adam too get plenty of comments.

  • Allison

Taking a shot – On Season 3 there was a all female top 4. Clay came back to perform with Fantasia, Diana, Jasmine and LaToya backing him up. Now there”s an all female top 5 maybe they’ll recreate that moment. Idol is not loathe to copy itself.

  • Allison

And Clay also had a NY Times best seller.

  • http://twitter.com/Lutrell4 Ira

They remind me of the hecklers that turn out for shows. They have neither the talent or courage to tryout for these programs, but are always ready to be negative….. Janelle is gonna be fine….

  • Allison

    Another deprecating remark

  • http://twitter.com/Lutrell4 Ira

For whatever the reason they are embracing the Idol alumni, those of us that have been fans of the show are thankful. It’s like seeing old friends again; seeing how they’ve grown, what they’ve been doing with their music, and their lives. I for one keep hoping that the big announcement will include some kind of resident showcase or alumni participation in this year’s tour. Where’s Naima and Blake?

  • Allison

I want to see Crystal too. Love her music.

  • Allison

because he must have pissed them off

  • Allison

Yes the first seasons were great. Before the bandzillas and back up singers. Just finding raw talent and propelling it forward.

  • Allison

Jason and Bo would be picks of mine.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Regardless of how popular Clay was back in 2004-2005, his popularity has decline dramatically to the point where he has trouble drawing audiences of even a thousand, and there is no reasonable way to suggest that a performer who draws at this level will boost the ratings of Idol.

  • Allison

She has screamed out of control and looked absolutely awful every time she comes back to Idol. Clay on the other hand has been vey entertaining.

  • Allison

For the performances she showed up for.

  • fuzzywuzzy
  • fuzzywuzzy

Clay’s answer about not watching Idol hasn’t stayed constant. The response he has given most frequently is that Season3 was the last season he watched, but he’s also watched at other times, most famously in that infamous blog post you refer to. lol I thought that it was funny that Clay criticized the celeb judges and claimed that the focus wasn’t on the contestants when he allegedly hasn’t watched the show since season 3. lol

  • fuzzywuzzy

It’s from the official press release from FOX that MJ posted.

  • Trina

No, Clay isnt anywhere near as popular as he was after season 2 but I’m still planning on watching for him and Fantasia. I stopped watching but these two will bring me back. I wish they would bring back more people from earlier seasons who havent been seen in a while. And honestly? If Casey Abrams and Casey James can warrant invites back then IMO Clay certainly deserves one. I dont even think Idol is selecting these alums with the intentions of ratings going up but more for trying to keep longterms fans interested. Not everyone is going to have Kelly/Carrie levels of success for 10 years, but success and selling millions of albums at one time shouldnt be overlooked.

  • fuzzywuzzy

The longer term benefits to Taylor and his Vegas show would far outweigh canceling a couple of shows. I’m sure that Caesar’s would welcome Taylor appearing on Idol for the tremendous exposure.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Well, this is clearly a matter of opinion. lol

  • fuzzywuzzy

Regardless, Fantasia received a Theater World Award in 2006-2007 for her performance.

    http://www.theatreworldawards.org/past-recipients.html

    Theatre World Award

At an annual ceremony and an afternoon party attended by former winners and invited members of the theatre community, six actresses and six actors are presented with a Theatre World Award in recognition of their debut performance in a Broadway or Off-Broadway production.

The Theatre World Award remains the oldest award given for a debut theatre performance On or Off-Broadway. The contribution this Award has made to the theatre is incalculable. It is not a competition and is it only given once. Because it is given for a debut performance, it encourages and inspires newcomers to the stage to continue to pursue their dream. It is freely given at a time when encouragement is so necessary in an industry known more for rejection than reception.

The Theatre World Award winners are chosen by the Theatre World Awards committee, which is comprised of David Cote (Time Out New York, NY1), Joe Dziemianowicz (New York Daily News), Peter Filichia (Newark Star-Ledger), Harry Haun (Playbill), Matthew Murray (Talkin’ Broadway),Frank Scheck (The Hollywood Reporter), and Linda Winer (Newsday).

Reall?. Prince was on AI5? I didn’t remember that.
I do remember that Hicks won, All the news outlets only talked about Aiken and that Sandecki fellow after the show. It was just an after thought that they even mentioned Hicks winning.

  • elliegrll

Aren’t Paul Jolly and Nick Boddington white guys? Nick and Charlie are the types of contestants that AI voters love, but neither made the top ten.

  • elliegrll

Fantasia’s last appearance was very subdued. She sand Collard Greens and Cornbread during season 10.

  • Niall

For years we complained that the show ignored its alumni in favor of guest spots for The Black Eyed Peas and other non-idol acts. This year we are getting former idols every week, some we never expected to get a performance slot, and I’m surprised there are people debating it.

I don’t care if Clay is not a huge star anymore; he’s part of the AI family and that’s a good enough reason for me. I’ve never been a fan but I’m glad he was invited back. I hope we get several more alum performances before the finale. Now that we have an obvious non-elimination week, that’s a great time to include a few more previous idols.

I’d especially like to see Crystal and Bo of those who you mentioned.

  • abbysee

Tptb didn’t get the memo as to the pecking order, I suppose.

  • elliegrll

None of those three accolades can be used to describe Clay.

  • abbysee

I agree. I’ve always wanted them to feature former idols more. Frankly, what took them so long? I’d love to see Bucky, Joshua, and especially Crystal. Throw in my special snowflake to sing with Amber or Candice and Taylor and that will make my season. They don’t have to be superstars, but they are a part of the idol family. I foster no delusions about any of them, that doesn’t make them less worthy!

I feel something like American Idol all stars edition would be interesting and maybe probable… Not so much about winning any particular prize other than boosting a career, but rather just about reviving older idol fans that would like to see favorite contestants from days gone by. I think it’d change things up in a good way.

  • curly_yenta

Totally disagree. His new career as a Vegas headliner IS where his future lies – not a singular appearance on Idol. I’m sure if he could swing it, tho, he’d be more than happy to appear but I think his priority is where the money is coming from and that’s in Vegas now. People who buy tickets to his show are real paying customers. People who watch Idol don’t guarantee a thing. BTW, Idol had a chance to have him appear on the show when they were in Vegas.

  • blackberryharvest

    Everybody called Paul a WGWG.

  • taylor

I’m pretty sure Paul doesn’t play the guitar, does he?
He never did on the show.

  • Karen C

That means they weren’t voted for, though, if they didn’t make the top 10.

Really, the similarity between them and the WGWG was more that they were in a similar genre, and both Nick and Charlie did play piano.

Well, maybe the footage that they shot of Taylor when they were in Vegas will be aired on the show. It would be a poor substitute for a live performance, but would be very good promotion for Taylor. I still think that it would be incredibly shortsighted of Taylor (and Caesar’s) to not accept the opportunity to perform on Idol, as advertising the Vegas show to the Idol viewing demographic would significantly expand the potential paying customers for Taylor’s show, both in the short and long term.

  • fuzzywuzzy

True, but earlier in the same press release they use “multi-platinum” and “platinum”- selling artist to describe Kelly and Scotty, and that description certainly fits Clay. Maybe because he isn’t currently signed to a label, that’s why they omitted that description for him?

  • vdawg

The picture of the five girls is nice. I like kree but she needs a makeover, she always wears black and white.

  • Drew

Someone asked for a link to the top successful idols. This list is based purely on sales charts and does not include any other successes or appearances such as Broadway, TV, other reality shows, books, awards, charity involvement etc.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_American_Idol_alumni_album_sales

Note that outside of Kelly, who is doing wonderfully well, every other idol listed had significant drops in their second and beyond album sales. It’s not unique to any particular idol, it seems to be what happens when a label turns to the new idol crop to promote.

Promotion seems to elude a lot of former idols. Very few, if any, idols get the type of promotion Justin Timberlake has had for his latest album. It’s not uncommon for the labels to cut to bare minimum promotion on an idol’s second or third album. It’s a common complaint among idol fans no matter who the idol is.

There are a variety of ways to make idol success charts. When one considers all the collective works of an idol the chart would look different.

Maybe in promo photos, but I remember, her audition shirt was coral, her “victory song” blazer was royal blue, and she had a lovely sea foam green dress this week during “What the World Needs Now Is Love.”

I still don’t understand why Kelly’s 4th album has yet to be certified. It should be certified either as Gold or Platinum.

  • taylor

Why does Kree need a makeover? P2 wore the same brown or grey color throughout his run. Most the WGWGs relied on plaid and jeans. At least she changes up the styling of her clothes. If the guys wear the same exact thing every week, the girls should be able to do the same.

Yay for more idol alums! I didn’t know Clay was working on more music. (unless he’s singing something old).

  • stargazed

Thanks for the link, Drew. With all of the downplaying, we tend to forget just how successful Clay Aiken has been with his recording career. He has been equally successful on Broadway and with other endeavors.

  • stargazed

It could be but probably not. He gained a lot of kudos and recognition for his stint on Celebrity Apprentice.

My goodness, I’d love to see everyone on your list and add Siobhan Magnus!

Anthony Fedorov and Carmen Rasmusen appeared on “Fear Factor”. It was the only time I watched the show. They didn’t win.

Oh, they have changed the rules?

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

Maybe we should Twitter that message. Please bring back Jason Castro!!

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

I hope they have a nice Introduction for Clay. Yes, he is a success story!

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

I’m not sure since they also shot a video of Taylor Hicks. Maybe it will just be a video production of those not appearing on the show itself?

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

Maybe he can come during a rehearsal sing and talk to the Finalists, and have it put all on tape? Then be back to do his show?

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

I wish they would bring Debra Byrd back, but Idol seems to have enough vocal coaches on hand.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

I know I sent many Twitter messages to Nigel about bringing back alumn that weren’t winners of their season.

Apparently they feel the vocal coaches and Jimmy Iovine are enough?

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

I am surprised Josh hasn’t gotten a job on Broadway. His voice is perfect. Maybe needs acting lessons, though.

  • Montavilla

    No problem. :)

Just saw this, and I can tell you WE all knew what On My Way Here was saying, and so would anyone else listening to tracks from the album. I think it was beautiful music, but fans were not happy with some of the songs all but telling us he was gay. He had been in Spamalot just prior to this album, and if you had seen him in NY, you would have known BEFORE the album release. THAT was the problem. TONS of fans left before the cd hit the markets. By then, everyone in NY knew Clay had a boyfriend, and actually saw him.

For some reason, he is a target, and I doubt IDOL will have a boost in viewership, as it would not surprise me to have fans of others refuse to tape or tune in, just to prove a point. This is a real possibility, as their hatred knows no bounds.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Well, the ratings for yesterday’s show were down from last week, which was not a surprise and answers those fans who were claiming that Clay’s appearance would increase ratings, which was illogical and just not rational. lol Sorry, but no one except the remaining Claymates care about Clay any more, and there just aren’t enough of them to make even a small blip in the ratings. And nobody else cares enough to boycott the show. lol

As for OMWH, I thought that it was a good album, but I also understand what you are saying about some fans finally getting a clue about Clay’s sexuality. However, the hardcore homophobic Claymates really didn’t accept Clay’s sexuality until he came out (although, a lot of them were very suspicious when he was going to have a baby with Jaymes via in vitro fertilization). In the end, the real problem was that the majority of Claymates felt that being gay was a “bad” thing and the rabid nuts drove a lot of normal fans from the fan base. It became a toxic fan base, filled with nasty, judgmental and deluded vigilantes who were determined to attack anyone who even suggested that Clay was gay. It’s too bad, but considering that Clay’s “Christian” image attracted these nutjobs, it’s not surprising that they would feel this way about him being gay. It’s a moot point though because it appears that his recording career is over and he’s going to devote his time to his charitable efforts.
