RE: AdaM and the goodbye song. Does it make sense at all to use a different song besides the two already being released to radio? I admit I dunno these things, but that sounds like a weird change in strategy. After milking LO for all its worth, way past the time most fans wanted a new single, suddenly we get 3 songs pushed to wide audiences at once (though rock radio being a wide audience is arguable I guess)? It seems pretty certain that DC will perform CBTM on Idol this month, and the good bye song is revealed Top 12 results night. If indeed the good bye song is a DC one (and I’m not convinced it will be) and he goes on Idol the week after, or even a couple weeks after that and performs a different song, it almost seems like it would cause a weird, non-synergistic effect on the audience. I dunno, but maybe that’s just me though.

That’s part of the reason I don’t really think they’ll use a DC song for the goodbye song. ADAM could maybe fit, but it’s not single material (great song, just not suitable for radio). CBTM is single material, but I don’t see it fitting as a goodby song. More than that, Heroes is also going to get some major exposure since it’s being used for those tennis tournaments. I guess it’s a multi-pronged approach. I’m all for getting as much of David’s music heard as possible, as long as it doesn’t create conflict. Right now, I don’t think it does.

But as a casual observer, other Cook songs have been marketed to wide, or just different audiences w/o regard to whether they’re singles. “Heroes” for sports events, most recently as the ACC basketball tourney, comes to mind, as does obviously ADAM on AI and of course the “Declaration” Tour to colleges and Bar-ba-sol to rock radio. Maybe 19alphabet is painting with broad brushes for exposure to different audiences — sort of seems that way to me. Here’s to hoping all audiences respond favorably!

I think it’ll take some wriggling to make a song from DC’s album the boot song, and I believe all boot songs were singles, which this one won’t be (unless it’s CBTM. And really, I just don’t see it).

Plus I really don’t want to see people upset in a few days when it turns out to be someone random. Or, y’know, Daughtry.

I get that, but the boot song generates a lot bigger and a steady exposure for a several month period, which is much more similar to what you would want for a single than the one-off uses for sports montages and the like. I get the dual release, but this kind of 3-pronged attack would not make sense to me, because you want to spread out the songs that you’re pushing to a wide audience for a record to have sustained sales. That’s why I don’t think the boot song is AdaM…

ETA: haha, this discussion is so interesting because we’re all speculating without any info. The radio silence from AI is really annoying, particularly in light of Trina’s info about Celebrate Me Home’s announcement. The fly-by-the-seat-of-their-pants impression I’m getting from the producers this season is really starting to bug… I guess we’ll find out in 2 days. Oh the impatience heh.

Well really – we haven’t heard anything about the goodbye song…period. Usually at this point we know something so the silence is odd. Last year there was a Billboard article talking about Celebrate Me Home several days before the first Top 12 show, right before they started using Hollywood is Not America for the earlier rounds there was all these articles talking about it and kind of introducing Ferris. IIRC with “Home” there was no advanced notice, it just was there the first elimination show.. though “Home” was pimped in a early AI commercial.

That said ADAM just doesn’t strike me as a goodbye song, and the 3 times it’s been used has been more in the context of a happy, beginning journey type song. The weird thing is if any DC song fits as a goodbye song it would be Light On.

If they use any AI contestant songs I am sure it will be one of David’s. I mean there are not any others that are fitting and he is the newest idol. Plus it would help him achieve more sales.

A Daily Anthem has only one part that could kinda work .. the chorus asking everyone to sing along, but its not long enough to do a whole goodbye montage too.

As much as I love Come Back to Me, I’m kinda disappointed that it’s the second single. Reason being it’s not written by David. Of all the wonderful songs, they must choose two songs NOT written by David as first two singles. In my opinion, they should’ve chosen Lie or Life on the Moon as the AC single.

However, the dual release of Bar-Ba-Sol to the rock radio at least gives me a reason to smile. I wonder what would be the release plans for other countries.

I think it makes perfect sense to pimp some of the songs that aren’t being pushed to CHR radio. Heroes and it’s made-for-sports-montage-y-ness is a perfect example…it’s ingenious to try and get the song associated with sports. Those kind of songs hang on forever, then, in the public consciousness. I hope it works. I dunno, I see it as a way to highlight a deeper album cut that maybe might unexpectedly struck a chord with people even if it wasn’t pegged for radio release, which in turn could make people think “wow, maybe I should pick up the album” rather than “I want to buy that single.” Permanent is another of those kind of songs…I wouldn’t be surprised if the American verison of SYTYCD borrows a page from the Canadian version and uses Permanent for a contemporary routine this coming season. ADAM is a gem and my personal favorite on the record, but as people pointed out it’s not single material unless the label is feeling like they want to take a huge gamble on a uniquely structured song being a flukey hit. I think its good for the album as a whole to give a song like that mass AI exposure to an audience that is already familiar with Cook and maybe predisposed to warm up to a song that shows off his quirkier songwriting talents.

DCTR is kind of like a college sports team with a lot of depth at running back and various other positions or something…you want the backs who aren’t starting to get some playing time and give them a chance to contribute to the win. The casual fans are going to be more familiar with the starter who has the showy speed and the potential to break away, but the grind it out short yardage back who specializes in getting the first down in clutch situations is just as important in their own way.

All that said, apparently somebody edited the season 8 wiki page to say that they are going to use a Daughtry song again for the goodbye montage, so maybe it won’t be a Cook tune after all. ALthough I disagree that there aren’t any that fit. I never think the song they choose fits perfectly, anyway. It’s all in the editing.

Making it to the top 12..oops 13, is usually life-changing in a good way, so I like the idea of using ADAM…it celebrates someone’s Idol experience instead of harping on their departure. I did not like the “Bad Day” song. It was annoying. I also don’t think that ADAM was ever going to be released as a single, so it would be nice for it to get some exposure. Wouldn’t it be absolutely cheesetastic if DC performed it at the finale and everyone sang (or whoah’d) along? Apparently a new Daughtry song has been listed as the 2009 AI boot song on Wikipedia. Of course, that might have been an overzealous Daughtry fan updating the entry, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out to be true. I always dislike the boot songs, so a Daughtry song would be perfect! David is probably doing well enough to get a second album out of RCA, but Daughtry is really the golden boy. I’m surprised they haven’t had Carrie record a boot song.

Isn’t it a little odd that the CBTM adds are being listed (under Future Releases, Impacting Songs on AllAccess) for both Pop and HAC for those specified dates, but “Bar-ba-sol” isn’t being listed as going for adds on Rock/Alternative? What gives? Does this release have label support or is it something that David is doing on his own-ish? Is it getting a video too? What song would he sing if he did any TV promo or appeared on AI?

Okay, so I’ve just spent a bunch of posts casting a lot of doubt that a deep album cut from DCTR would be the boot song, but I gotta say, speculation on an unreleased Daughtry song being the boot song, months and MONTHS before the album is even released trumps my unlikelihood meter far more than AdaM. I mean, I didn’t think a new Daughtry single would be on the radar until at least late Summer/early Fall if he’s scheduled for a November release. That said, I checked out the link, and the song’s pretty nice, and it’s neat that Daughtry performed a new song sans the full band so we can hear it pretty well.

I don’t think Daughtry’s song will be used. Wikipedia isn’t reliable and those entries keep changing. His album isn’t due out until the fall so that doesn’t sound very believable.
David has several songs that would work…ADAM, CBTM, LOTM.

An awesome vlog. I am expecting (hoping) Bar-ba-sol hits big on rock. David is a rocker at heart and his two released songs are much more suited to AC and HAC as shown by their chart performances. CBTM is also more suited to HAC and i do not want David to get stuck in people’s minds as an HAC artist. Perception is truth for so many and all the non AI fanbase knows of David right now is HAC. So fingers crossed that BBS hits huge for him.

There is nothing wrong with being a HAC artist because there are a lot of great artists that hang out there. Now if Cook solely hung around top 40 stations, then I would start to get the willies so, HAC, AC and alternative is a great place to be.

Yeah, ITA. HAC isn’t AC, it actually sells singles and albums. Other than CHR, it’s probably the most important format (not to mention most natural fit) for Cook’s music. Rock radio is more about cred than anything else. At this point in Cook’s career, sales are so much more important than elusive “cred”.

So, really, I’d rather he do nothing at all on rock radio and have a #1 on HAC than the other way around. And that’s despite liking BBS 500% more than CBTM.

You know that’s actually a good point about with Nigel being gone that they just may not use a boot song at all. IF they did use some other song off his album for the boot song though technically RCA wouldnt have to promote but I’m still thinking no to ADAM. Would they really use that every week now after using it three times this season so far?

Well, that makes a lot more sense. Neither of the two singles really fit as boot songs lyric-wise and it would be really weird for them to pimp yet another song (ADAM) off his album (even though some of the lyrics do otherwise fit) — and then on top of that, have another song (Heroes) pimped during the SEC/ACC tournaments. Although record labels like having lots of promo for their artists, they probably don’t want radio station PDs to get listener requests for a bunch of different singles from one artist because it dilutes the actual singles you are actually trying to have chart.

It really was.
As much as I like Ace Young (not much, sorry Ace!), I would’ve loved to see Terry interacting with the other band members. Andy was filming, so there’s some interaction there, but having Joey and Neal in this would’ve been awesome.
I love the little back and forth the boys have during the shows. They are so good together.

maybe we’ll get a Terry appearance on SNL the next time the band hits the big stage. that was hilarious.

I agree that I’d love to see more of the band (where are you Neal???) than Ace Young. But maybe that’s b/c I just didn’t get his joke about P.Diddy’s skin color. But the rest was golden. I’d love to know who “Chester MacArthur” really is. Probably some poor sap of a prof whose students will now tease him mercilessly. And who knew they sold veggie burgers at the BK?

Love Pork Beans! I hope there are some more New Jersey stops. Cook had introduced a Weezer video as one of his favorite videos in the VH1 top 40 end of year countdown, but I couldn’t remember if it was Troublemaker or Pork and Beans…I’m guessing it was Pork and Beans?

To everyone who commented about the boot song for AI8, it is Carrie Underwood cover of Motley Crue’s Home Sweet Home, now available from iTunes.

Personally, I think Life on the Moon would have been the perfect boot song: “turn me around and point me back to home….” and it sure describes the idol experience.

…And at no point did he mention an on-screen kiss. Sneaky Dave!

That PorkBeans is hilarious. David Cook amazes me with his many talents. His comedic abilities are impressive here. Not to mention that accent.

Very exciting as he has two singles coming out, a new video, and an appearance on Idol, not to mention the ongoing tour videos and interviews. It’s a fun time to be a fan.

I wonder when we’ll see the video on Vh-1. Next week or is that asking too much?

LOL He is too funny blogging from what looks like a bathroom. I’m so happy for him that the tour seems to be going so well. On the videos the crowds seem to be great. I really like Come Back to Me and think it will play well on either Top 40 or hot adult contemporary stations. Can’t wait to see the video. Bar Ba Sol is not one of my favorites, but it was a nice beat and it always sounds like the band is having a ball when they play it. Any opportunity to hear David on the radio is just fine by me. I hope every song on the CD is a single. My favorites are still Lie and Avalanche. Both could also find a home on HAC.
