Wow! Its an honor for David to be singing at the US Open, and for the US Open to have David Singing there.

He looked so happy, the vocal on point like always! Not many sing it better. And i like the preppy red, white, and blue tennis shirt.

Congrats to David! What a cool experience!

  • Chipmunk

    FANTASTIC!!! really well done Archie!

My sis must have been in heaven yesterday. She’s a tennis fanatic and huge Archie fan from last year. Must call her up and ask if she watched it!

  • qbaloo

Beautifully done. His voice is so much richer now; you can really hear it in the lower notes. He looked pretty relaxed in front of the Open crowd too. He’s grown so much as a performer over the last year and he’s looking very handsome in the red, white and blue.

  • ozarka

Beautifully done, David!! I loved how he made the whole song into a gradual crescendo building up toward that powerful ending. And I loved all the patriotic pageantry. It’s so nice that David gets to sing all these anthems so frequently. It adds to his already wholesome image…

He sang the national anthem during the:
    NFL Pro Bowl in Hawaii
Real Salt Lake vs Colorado Rapids soccer game in SLC
Utah governor’s inauguration (twice, in 2005 and 2009)
Jazz vs Lakers NBA playoffs during his Top 3 homecoming
Dublin Coffman High School football game as part of his radio tour

He sang God Bless America at the:
American League Championship Series baseball game, Tampa vs Boston
Fire Station 54 in NYC on 9/11/2002

And now, of course, America the Beautiful at the U.S. Open.
    I’m so proud of him.

  • mhel

Bravo david archuleta!what an excellent performance last night.you showed so much passion and confidence while performing. It’s the best rendition of atb that i’ve heard so far!!! I loved it.

He looks so stylish too, so handsome!loved his outfit, very refreshing and appropriate for the occassion.
You made us all proud of you david archuleta! You are the best!

    Win win…
Gave me chills so patriotic and the end?!!
Boy that boy sure can sing!
    Looked great!
Preppy not youthful. Great choice there David!

  • ggdoorsfan

another superb performance by david – his voice filled arthur ashe stadium, and was so clear and strong… it’s always a special treat when he does these type of performances, as they give us all a chance to just be captivated by the beauty of his voice… he looked great, and the crowd loved him…. way to go david!

  • abbysee

Wow, it built really beautiful. His voice is so robust and full bodied. It was made for stuff like this. Nobody does it better. Good job sweetie pie!

  • ggdoorsfan

this review in the examiner does a great job summarizing his great performance, and is spot on regarding the vocal versatility he possesses and displays so effortlessly… read more at the link…

As usual, David Archuleta’s vocals were spot on, as his interpretation had a quasi-pop, soulful, R&B vibe to it. The accompaniment was simple piano chords. The harmony was a bit classical (like a Protestant hymn) but also a bit gospel.

The most appealing aspect of David Archuleta’s voice is that it suits pop, classical, and R&B equally well.

Woah I didn’t know he was there… that’s why he tweeted about Federer’s shot (which was REALLY epic btw)… it was a good match between Clijsters and Wozniacki and such an amazing comeback for Kim!!!

Good for David that he was invited to sing for this event. Man, what I wouldn’t do to see Roger Federer live in action.

  • pam05

Bravo David!!! Stellar performance, loved the mix of genres in there. He gave a very soulful performance. Love those pipes, and didn’t he look stunning :D

  • christine

David did the US open good last night. His performance was outstanding, and respectful, tasteful, full of soul and grandness. Now , compare that to the VMA’s and the tasteless, disrespectful, ugly at times, and kinda trashy performances mixed in the night. I prefered David’s moment of America loving performance!!

  • Tara

Such a beautiful voice. And beautiful skin! Looking forward to the Christmas CD.

  • frogcooke

Awww he did good! Looked good as well :)

  • ilovekrisallen39

He is so fantasic there. I was getting chill’s when he was singing that how great I thought David was. He sure can sing that’s for sure. I just love David A.

  • haruhi

I wasn’t able to watch David Archuleta sing but I did see on tv (live) the unbelievable shot he tweeted about.

  • abbysee

To clean my mind of all of this Kanye stuff, I am just gonna watch David sing again!

The most appealing aspect of David Archuleta’s voice is that it suits pop, classical, and R&B equally well.

Yep, that’s what so special about his voice. I want his new pop stuff to put the soul back in David.

  • Stephdanielle

Wow, David was TRULY AMAZING!! We are so incredibly proud to be Americans and to be fans of David Archuleta, he’s the absolute best!!!

What a contrast to what took place at the VMA’s. There are a lot of people in this entertainment world who could learn a lot just by observing the character and class of David Archuleta!

  • Jayd

He is just so sweet and talented! I can’t believe I’ve been watching tennis for two weeks straight, but I missed David! Thanks for posting this, MJ!

Man, what I wouldn’t do to see Roger Federer live in action.

    ^Ditto!!

  • Davidx2

Another stellar performance by David Archuleta. The ending was just awesome!! Gave me goose bumps.

  • BootStar

He actually seemed a little nervous at the beginning (snatching breaths in the middle of a couple of words), but once his nerves settled, he really let her go. It was a very moving performance. Bravo, Archie.

There are a lot of people in this entertainment world who could learn a lot just by observing the character and class of David Archuleta.

There are actually a lot of people of ALL walks of life, including politicians and pundits, who could learn something from David’s grace and class.

  • AMB18

Hand to Heart….David, you do us proud.
    Chills, Goose bumps…Just Beautiful. :)
(ps. all your “reflecting on it’s meaning” of the song, over the weekend sure showed. Great Job!)

  • Tess

Nice to see that David has learned to control his voice and doesn’t fall back on the old tricks that he did when he was younger. Comparing the old video of God Bless America from ’02 and this one seven years later really shows the growth and maturity in his voice.

It seems the David is very comfortable in the path he has chosen for his career. Eventually, based on his fan’s comments, he will be the “go to guy” for that wonderful inspirational moment that is so heartfelt and appreciated.

  • Stephdanielle

Bootstar: You are so right, so many people of all walks of life could learn a lot from David, the world would definitely be a better place!

  • ggdoorsfan

it’s not just those fan comments making david that ”go to guy” for these kind of performances… he’s building quite a nice portfolio of performances like this at sporting events that seem to be on the radar of those folks sponsoring these events… you hit it right relaying his maturity and progression as a singer and performer… it’s what one hopes, and i expect, to see in an artist. he has matured so much in these two areas in just a year and a half, and this is one area where his youth serves him well – i’m hoping for many years of the same kind of artistic progression and growth… and tons more performances at events like this – and bigger :)

  • heidijoy

David sang so beautifully and heartfelt. In some of his tweets leading up to the main event,he talked of the message and how much it meant to him. He arrived in New York on September 11 and i’m sure was reminded of the events of 2001 and then 2002 when he sang there tor the fireman. You could hear his emotional connection to the song and he was so honored to be with the Marines. There is much depth to David. You could see the postive response in the audience. He was also thrilled to see Federer’s miraculous shot. He also stayed for the gals tournament. Proud to be a David Archuleta fan and proud to be an American.

  • ghl

    Thanks for posting mj.

I think this video sounds better and clear.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wu_NlPiDnuQ

His rendition shows how serious he is as an artist. Whenever he sings anthems, he always twists the originals and adds ingredients with soul. He started out low and then built up to the climax leaving audience an impression of power and solemness at the end. Give me chills.

  • christine

What’s amazing is that David is taking opportunities to build on his career between singles and albums. The artists that get chosen to perform at professional sports events are those with vocal reputations. And David is finding a place to fit in with reputable artists who are asked to sing for these occasions. I love it! What a great venue for sharing his talent with such a wide audience. Please, more singing of anthems and “America” songs, David!!!! That’s what all Americans can connect to regardless of age, sex, race!

  • houstonrufus

Great job, David! Really enjoyed seeing David on TV again. Hope he’s enjoying some time in NYC.

  • KathyH

Loved, loved, loved that soaring ending and the whole presentation with the unfurling of the flag. I’m so proud of David, and pleased to be his fan.

  • abms

David Archuleta gave a stellar performance of America the Beautiful at the US Open yesterday. His rich vocals were spot on and the climax of the song was amazing.

After seeing the VMA fiasco of Kanye West bullying Taylor Swift during her acceptance speech, it is refreshing to know that we have someone like David in the music business. Mr. West can take a lesson or two from Mr. Archuleta on how to treat others with class and dignity.

  • brewster

Another beautiful and heartfelt performance by David. Just terrific.

  • hollyre

Beautiful! David’s voice soared through that stadium. At the end of the video the announcer says David’s name again and the crowd cheers and claps. His wonderful vocals wrapped around every spectator there. No denying the wonder that is David Archuleta.

  • burkey

David Archuleta sang America The Beautiful last night at the USO for Tennis. He looked stunning and gave a stunning performance! He has such talent and such class!

David Archuleta has been very busy recording a Christmas album, ‘Christmas From The Heart’ & it is due to be released on October 13th. Christmas in October! I can’t imagine a better singer that could record a Christmas album to get me in the holiday spirit!

  • LCT

What a beautiful rendition of this song! But only David Archuleta can do it justice! I can’t wait for his Christmas album!

  • Marylee

David Archuleta has, once again, left me speechless with this beautiful performance of America the Beautiful! It matters not what stage he’s on…he continues to blow be away with the emotion that he puts into everything he sings! I have been left with chills and tears watching this performance last night and, again numerous times, today..tears of joy and pride for what David has brought to his fans over the past (almost) two years…so proud to be his fan. Thank you, David, for keeping it “real”…love you always!

Good job David! I’d like to see his soulful side more. It was beautiful.

  • frogcooke

clee, me too. I’d love to see a bit more of that.

  • alxsavage

David has definitely won me over after Idol ended, I’m not even from the USA, but that performance was beautiful!

  • Chickee

David I was breathless after your performance at the U.S. Open. Your poise and maturity stuns me time and time again! I couldn’t help but notice your smile as the Marines entered, this seemed to boost your confidence level as you “powered up” your performance to that level I’ve seen you grow to countless times over the last year. You are an amazing young man with a voice that overwhelms me time and time again. You are soaring David; thank you a million times over.

  • SpenserJ

I’m not typically an Archie fan, but it must be said that little dude’s got a fabulous set of pipes. That was really quite beautiful. Color me impressed.

  • movin2thabeet

Archie did a nice solid job with America the Beautiful.

Man, what I wouldn’t do to see Roger Federer live in action.

    ^^ Ditto squared!

  • gaylynn

David did such a great job, I love tennis and have attended the US Open several times, and to see him on the tennis court at Arthur Ashe stadium was amazing. Great job David!

David Archuleta’s Performance of ‘America the Beautiful’ is Soaring and Soulful at US Open Final
    September 14, 2009 by
    Tina Molly Lang

While David Archuleta’s voice is always beautiful, he sounds even more impressive live (and I was fortunate enough to have tickets to the US Open final). At his young age, David Archuleta knows how to convey the emotion of a song, especially fitting for this patriotic anthem

    .

David Archuleta and Adam Lambert have demonstrated that one doesn’t have to win American Idol to enjoy musical success. David Archuleta obviously enjoys a large following. Over at Arthur Ashe Stadium, I heard a mother scream “my daughter loves you!” Yet David Archuleta has a voice that appeals to many demographics, not just teenage girls.

In the wake of the anniversary of September 11, David Archuleta and the US Marine Corps Battalion moved many Americans to tears and patriotic pride. Although no American was playing in the US Open women’s final, David Archuleta’s soaring interpretation of America the Beautiful reminded fans why we love tennis and why we are proud to be American.

Nice to see that David has learned to control his voice and doesn’t fall back on the old tricks that he did when he was younger. Comparing the old video of God Bless America from ’02 and this one seven years later really shows the growth and maturity in his voice.

Well…given that he was maybe 12 or 13 years old in 2002, growth is only natural…lol..

This was beautiful. David really knows how to convey the emotion of a song. Just lovely, and very touching.

  • MissyMusic

    Beautiful – just beautiful!

  • ohreli

Gorgeous. I hope Jive lets his next album show more of that soul!!

  • TrudyFOD

David Archuleta’s voice is just amazing! Loved his version of America the Beautiful. David sings with so much soul…I just love his voice. David just finished up a summer tour…and it was an honor I’m sure to sing at this US Tennis Tournament. David is just a talented singer/songwriter and has a holiday album coming out on Oct 13 called Christmas From the Heart. David can sing anything!

I’m not typically an Archie fan, but….

LOL, SpencerJ, you’ve said that before…quite a number of times, in fact, times often followed by praise for our David. Are you sure you’re not an Archie after all? :D

    And Chickee…

I couldn’t help but notice your smile as the Marines entered, this seemed to boost your confidence level as you ‘powered up’ your performance to that level I’ve seen you grow to countless times over the last year.

I noticed the same smile; it was just like during his Pro-Bowl NA performance. How many performers are so real, so uninhibited, and so utterly without gile, that they can genuinely smile when others are capturing the attention of their audience during a performance?

    I love this kid!!!

  • LK09

Mj. Thanks so much for posting this. David Archuleta’s music stirs my soul every time I hear him.

  • lovemymatthew

David Archuleta has an amazing voice that is so versatile. He can sing almost anything. David you sure rocked at the US Open. Loved your rendition of America The Beautiful. Can’t hardly wait for your Christmas from the Heart CD coming out in October. Congratulation for a superb performance. Go Go David. I’m so proud of you.

  • carolinacharms

Pure, unadulterated genius. David was wonderful. Truly, I am stunned. And I love the arrangement. Is it old and rare…or new? Just fabulous all around. Bravo.

  • HappyDaisy

Archie feels the music and conveys that emotion beautifully. Not big on Chrismas music, but am looking forward to this guy’s Christmas album and some holiday performances!

  • Suzanne

He was nervous at first–poor breath control–catching breaths between syllables of “moun-tain” and “frui-ted.” By the second verse he did great–and the ending was incredible.

Too bad it didn’t air on CBS.
