David Cook and little bro’ Andrew Cook, their voices intertwining, perform the National Anthem before the Kansas City Chiefs home opener this afternoon.

As usual, Livehead rules! Heh.

Very nicely done. Love the harmony. (Clearly they’ve done this before.)

  • annoula

That was understated and cute. Just as it should be.

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

I am so glad to finally see these 2 sing together. Very nicely done! :D

  • Paula

Very nice. I notice no facial hair on David.

  • spanishfan

I loved the harmonies. So beautifully sung. I love David clean shaven.

  • sparklesgirl2

That makes me happy! Their harmony reminds me of singing the anthem before sporting events with my choir friends in HS. Only they were way more awesome. I’m sure the event meant a whole lot to both of them.

  • CathyMK

Very nicely done. They’re really cute together, with matching facial expressions and mannerisms.

  • Keel

Wow, very well done and they made it look easy.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Just gotta say I loved the intro: “Andrew Cook and his older brother…..”

    Heh.

  • abbysee

Beautiful job. Simply beautiful. I loved the way Andrew was looking around, taking it all in.

  • sfbb

Andrew didn’t even seem nervous. Although I noticed he kept looking at Dave during the song. Beautiful harmony!

  • J

I just simply loved it :clap_tb:

  • Lu

    Awwwwwww… nice!

  • gingerly

Sounded like they had been doing it all their lives. Lovely harmonies.

  • Sarah

That was so sweet and old fashioned. Just right, in other words.

  • FolkFan

That was lovely. Thanks for getting a hold of the video. (And, yes, livehead does rule.)

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

It’s pretty sweet that the were able to share that moment! Not bad at all! :)

  • Layla

    Well done boys…very nice harmonizing.

  • Suzanne

    thanks for posting this, MJ.

    1. I loved it! That was way better than most versions of that song.
    2. AC has a very, nice light tenor. Very easy to listen to.
    3. DC as the bass–he sounded good, but on “ram” in “ramparts” he sounds a little like Dory talking “whale” inside the whale in Finding Nemo. (I think we’ve officially found the lowest note in his range.)
    4. I thought they sounded very good together–very clear, very good pitch.
    5. Way better than DC at the NBA finals. DC should never sing that song w/o AC!

  • EmmaJK

Lovely. Wonderful job by the brothers Cook. The harmonies were just beautiful. How cute were the two of them in their matching jerseys :)

Suzanne – I’m pretty sure DC was singing the tenor part and AC was singing the bass. But, I agree, they sounded terrific together.

  • jan

    DC as the bassà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’he sounded good, but on à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“ramà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ in à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“rampartsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ he sounds a little like Dory talking à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“whaleà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ inside the whale in Finding Nemo. (I think weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve officially found the lowest note in his range.)

    LOL!

I’m so happy to see them singing together.

  • ealbino

    That was very enjoyable! :thumbup_tb:

  • Trina

Beth must be one proud mama. I’d be beaming if I were her.

  • Laurie

    Well done Cook brothers!

  • Mia

    DC sings the tenor part.

  • bluejeans

That was VERY pretty. Yeah that DC shouldn’t sing this song w/o AC around. lol. But I think DC was singing the tenor part too.

  • AInoob

I guess I’m in the minority in my thinking that except for a few touchy parts, DC’s last NA wasn’t that bad, lol. This one with Andrew was good, had an almost choir-like sound. I also thought that it was David singing the tenor parts.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Yeah, Andrew’s definitely the bass/baritone. I thought it was David at first, too.

  • Jane62

I agree that David was singing the higher part.

  • bluejeans

Here‘s another clip that you can hear them better. Andrew has one hell of a lower register.

  • weelassie

I imagine that will rank for Andrew as one of the times of his life. He looked like a kid in a candy store at the end-as he should. Very nice.

  • GEEK4VOCAB

That was absolutely beautiful. The Cook Brothers FTW. I loved how they were geeking out in the beginning with all the players around them.

And I can’t tell you how happy I am to see David’s FACE!!!!!

    YAY!!!!!!

  • GEEK4VOCAB

Oh and I agree that David sang the higher part.

    And it was gorgeousness.

  • spanishfan

David sang the tenor part and Andrew the bass. That shows David ´s range which is amazing.

  • wwlwilliam

The Cook brothers’ rendition of NA is ok – it is a very safe interpretation which is nice to hear but forgettable (except it reminds me of a christmas carol :)

edit: let’s keep this thread focused on the cook brothers…

  • FolkFan

Mmm. You might prefer CD’s version (posted in the headlines thread from yesterday)—I personally don’t. I rather like that both versions of the SSB that DC has done (solo and with AC) have been a less embellished version. Even if someone preferred the style of CD’s over this one, I definitely would not agree that this one wasn’t equally heartfelt. At the time of his first national anthem, DC basically said that singing it scared the hell out of him because he viewed it as so important and that he wanted to do it simply because of its importance. Your mileage may vary, but I don’t think that it is necessary to add embellishments for the SSB to be heartfelt.

  • wwlwilliam

DC is a very good singer and defintely can high the very highs and very lows – thats no doubt about it. But to my own conclusion, his versions (for both solo and with AC) never live up to his own standards, which is surprising given his singing calibre. In both occassions, his singing style remains the same (or has not improved ) – a pretty flat-out affair without emotion. And AC completely stole his brotherthunder – I prefer the 2nd version because AC is able to do whatever DC can’t….

  • IGetCranked

Aww that was lovely! What a great memory for them to have now!

KEEP THIS THREAD FOCUSED ON THE COOK BROTHERS. We aren’t going to be arguing about which Idol sings the Anthem better in this thread. Fans of other Idols who feel like dropping by to jab the Cook fans? Please don’t do that. Thank you.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

David’s lower register has never been his friend. We learned that during AI. He’s not a perfect singer, just very versatile.

Andrew, on the other hand, sounds like more of a straight singer, who while not as versatile as David, seems to be extremely solid with his gift.

As we can see, one balanced out the other.

I’ve heard it said, and witnessed it, that relatives have great harmony (the closer the relation, the better). I could hear that in this instance.

  • cheese

I thought it was a very pretty rendition. David definitely seemed less nervous than last time, but probably not in ideal voice 12 hours after finishing a 53 date tour in a different state. I saw a photo of him arriving for the event in the same shirt he wore at the Tulsa Idol show. I really don’t care if he isn’t the greatest anthem singer evah. That song doesn’t usually make the album, lol.

  • emwcee

OK, to solve the argument on who sang which part, here’s a note from Andrew, which was posted in a facebook group:

Okay okay okay okay….i will tell you….tell all your friends! lol

I was singing the high notes at the beginning and the end… and i had the lower notes during the And the rockets red glare section. The mystery is now solved!

  • wordnerdarchie

Well, I think Andrew’s facebook entry puts to rest the idea that DC’s lower register is suspect.

So David was singing the low notes until he pops up to do “and the rockets red glare….that our flag was still there.” , and then transitions back down for the low notes in the ending. That is a very difficult thing to do. Harkens back to his audition when he said he was very versatile vocally.

And the “quirky” note on ramparts was Andrew’s? Do we all apologize to David now or later? :lol_wp:

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

LOL. Nevermind. It was AC on the “Dora and the Explorer” low notes. I still think DC can have trouble in his lower register, but it’s not a big deal.

Actually, I thought they were switching off parts, but could not be sure.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

I was singing the high notes at the beginning and the endà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ and i had the lower notes during the And the rockets red glare section. The mystery is now solved!

Heeeeehe! Mystery solved! So…can we blame David’s shakes on nerves?

  • wordnerdarchie

    MJ,

So did I misunderstand Andrew’s entry? Is so, I apologize to Andrew too. We’ll probably never know for sure, will we, as to who sang what. It sure leads to lots of discussion. Who would have guessed it’s so hard to tell the difference between them?

I thought it very interesting how they were able to time the song so that it coincided with the jets passing over head. I noticed they had a monitor with the words to the Anthem scrolling. I wondered whether it was there to help with the timing in addition to making sure there was no lyric disaster. :thumbup_tb:

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

    So did I misunderstand Andrewà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s entry?

No. You got it right! I think I’m confusing the issue, so I’ll shut up now.

  • DJ

That was so cool. Thanks for posting that. It’s nice to hear their voices harmonizing so well together.

I couldn’t be sure who was singing which part, either. They sound very similar. It would be cool if David has a song with his brother on the album.

  • wordnerdarchie

    GwendolynD

Yes, I noticed Dave did that big breath thing and little shake before they were going to sing. It reminded me of the time he did it after the judges comments following Little Sparrow. That was the “high blood pressure spike” night. FWIW – I have trouble with elevated BP too, and when it get’s too high, I always feel like I need to take big, deep breaths in order to slow my heart rate. I wonder if that’s David’s coping mechanism in response to quick pulse/BP issues? It’s just a theory.

  • spritely

wordnerdarchie, let’s call him on that number he gave us and apologize right now. In fact, let’s offer to take him out to dinner as a small token of our sincerity. Andrew can come, too.

  • wordnerdarchie

Count me in – spritely – sounds like a wonderful plan.

  • Trixee

I was singing the high notes at the beginning and the endà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ and i had the lower notes during the And the rockets red glare section. The mystery is now solved!

I still don’t believe it. I went back and watched it several times after seeing this quote and I still think David stayed on the high parts (except on “that our flag was still there” in which David kept with the melody). The only reasons I have for this are a) I know David’s voice, I listen to it everyday on repeat (but I’m sure alot of you can say that) and 2) Andrew’s mouth on “ramparts” is open a little wider to let out that low note. And I can’t explain why that makes sense to me but it does. Now back to real life where trivial things such as this don’t matter. Dammit Cookie!

  • DH108

This is the first time I have responded to any blog, but I felt compeled to do so. Please go to Andew Cooks web site and listen to the brothers’ National anthem duet. There is no backround distraction, just their voices. It is very obvious who sings which parts. You will find the versitility of davids voice as usual, beautiful registry with the ability to change his vocals to both bass and tenor without struggle. While Andrew has to be credited for his vocals also, there is not doubt which brother has the better talent. Andrew has a lot to learn and a good teacher to learn from. Some of the comments that I’ve been reading have just be so critical and knit picky of David Cook. And also rediculous. Just enjoy David for his talent ( maybe not always perfect, so what! Not a whole lot of rock stars are, could you imagine Mick Jagger or Stephen Tyler singing the NA?!! )and also the person he is, a charasmatic “rocker” who has caught the attention of many people of all ages.
