Note: The Hot 100 Airplay chart seems to have been renamed Radio Songs (and trimmed from 75 entries to 50). BB also introduced the Christian Airplay chart with Mandisa as the first chart topper.

As we all know, there are approximately 61,132 Billboard charts. This is a summary of just some of those charts and how the Idols/AGTers did on them this week. Please feel free to post rankings from your favourite BB chart or any other numbers you care to share. This is the daily numbers thread. The date in the header is the published chart date.

One Direction’s Midnight Memories is set to become the first artist album this year to open with 200,000 sales having this week already shifted 187,660 copies.

The group’s third Syco album accumulated that total up to the end of
business on Thursday, according to Official Charts Company statistics,
making it the fastest-selling artist title of 2013 with two days of
trading still to go. The previous record holder, Columbia act Daft
Punk’s Random Access Memories, shifted 165,091 week one in May.

Midnight Memories has also already surpassed the week-one sales of One Direction’s previous two albums with debut Up All Night having started with 138,631 sales in 2001 and Take Me Home managing 155,316 first-week sales last year.

The album is currently more than 100,000 ahead of its closest rival, Gary Barlow’s new Polydor set Since I Saw You Last, which is on track to debut at No 2 this coming Sunday. In the
week so far his erstwhile Take That colleague Robbie Williams is down
1-3 with the Island-issued Swing Both Ways, Epic’s Olly Murs rockets
96-4 following the release of an expanded version of Right Place Right
Time and Boyzone’s first Rhino offering BZ 20 is new at 5.

These are the updated estimates from HDD. That means that Danielle came in below 40K. Her estimates earlier in the week were 35K-40K.

  • Baptized

She’ll probably be below 40K. – I hope to see Daughtry climb up the charts since Baptized is selling out in stores across the US.

  • Mateja Praznik

One Direction going GOLD in the first week of release?!

  • Anny_nanny

Thanks! I thought that the release of the album was postponed.

  • fuzzywuzzy

    “Kelly Clarkson (RCA) 90-100k”

    Nice bump!

  • Liteasy

What stores is it selling out in? Not in my Walmarts – not stocked there at all.

  • dd999

I’ve read several comments saying Walmart didn’t have Danielle’s cd. My Walmart store only brought in 6 copies and I was surprised to see only one left. on the shelf. Seems to me Walmart under ordered?

  • Baptized

Daughtry opened at #9 on the Global Sales Chart. Two places higher than BTS.

  • Baptized

Walmart’s, Target’s, and Best Buy’s. People have been mentioning it on Twitter. BB’s website says it’s sold out in stores.

  • Baptized

If Syco pays for the certification. Yes.

  • fuzzywuzzy
  • Mason

Eh aren’t some people allergic to Mumfordian style of songs?

  • curlyenta

Daughtry is not in HDD estimates for next week? Wow! Definitely be way down from last week, despite Black Friday. Guess that trick doesn’t work all the time. It’s also down on ITunes to #66.

  • Baptized

This list only shows the albums above 40K. Most albums have 50% drop in the second week. If Daughtry sells 39K (they won’t be listed) and he would have only dropped 29%. Daughtry will sell about 45K this week with an 18.18% drop.

And I don’t know what you’re complaining about. He’s sold more copies in his first week than the entire run of Taylor Hicks’ latest CD.

  • Baptized

Also; Daughtry’s album sales will begin to climb once Waiting for Superman is released to Mainstream radio in January.

  • curlyenta

Why are u bringing up Taylor? He didn’t release an album a week ago. And I’m most definitely not complaining…just stating how Daughtry is already out of the top sellers after just 1 week.

  • Baptized

Because you’re a Taylor Hicks fan and the only reason you’re talking smack about Daughtry is that you’re a Hicks fan. It’s a little known fact that Hicks fans aka Soul Patrol hate Daughtry because of the success he received after Idol. His debut sold 607% more albums than Hicks. Hicks fans have tried and tried to find ways to get back at Daughtry. Therefore forming a hate collage. They follow posts about Daughtry and then post inaccurate annoying things.

There’s absolute no proof that Daughtry is out of the top sellers. HITS is just predicting those sales due to the fact they’re on sale. JT’s album is only $7 in Target – they think it will sell. It might not. It’s called an prediction. If Daughtry sells 39,000 copies this coming week. He’s had one of the smaller second week drops Daughtry has ever had. Debut 50%; LTT 52%; BTS 68% – Hell, Baptized could have the smallest second week drop of Daughtry’s history. We just don’t know yet. Wait until the numbers are in. Don’t catch the eggs before they hatch. It really just makes you look completely and utterly bitter.

Yea the Daughtry hate after 7 years is so tiresome.

  • http://mjsbigblog.staging.wpengine.com/ mjsbigblog

    Reminder:

Wow. So now we’re partying like it’s 2006? The only thing worse than fawars are 7 year old fan wars. Knock it off.

  • Amy Beth

I’m confused. Are these for this year (2013) or last year (2012)?

Yet you delete my comments about Taylor Hicks but keep the ones about Daughtry. Learn that’s there TWO sides to an argument. Stop defending Curly. My comment had 13 likes with 4 dislikes while his/hers has 8 dislikes and only 5 likes. Which means mine was more favorable.

Let me express my opinion and defend an artist that I like. Please and thank you.

  • Incipit

“…aren’t some people allergic to Mumfordian style of songs?”

*Chuckle*. Yes, allergic. They cause Mumfordian Mental Hives, I can’t listen to those style songs – though I wouldn’t be buying ID anyway. But they have fans who like their stuff.

  • elliegrll

An expected drop would be 50 -70%. Music usually doesn’t see a big bounce on black Friday, the big weekend for albums is the week before Christmas, for digital downloads it’s the week after.

Daughtry is not at the lofty heights that he was a few years ago, when the debut album remained in the BB 200 for close to two years, but he and his group are not down and out, their numbers are comparable to other groups in their genre, which I’m sure is fine with the label..

  • curlyenta

Mumfordian style? Like playing real instruments – banjos, fiddles, etc? Can never get tired of that…… #realmusic

  • girlygirl

Stores often order stock based on sales projections, along with shelf space. If they aren’t stocking many copies of her album, it’s likely because they aren’t projecting her to be one of their bigger sellers. If they get a bunch of complaints/orders, they’ll likely call the label and get more copies. If they don’t, they won’t.

There are too many artists putting out albums for stores to stock a bunch of copies of all of them.

We see this complaint on this board all the time: store x doesn’t have any/enough copies of artist x’s album.

  • Lexie O’Neill

Interesting that See You Tonight the album and CWSM are right next to each other–wonder if CWSM will pass it by for the season?

Thank you as always for taking the time to post all this information.

  • CanadianLady

Yeah, it’s as if people are buying one of each. :)

  • CanadianLady

He stuck to the facts while you attacked his reason for stating the facts. That’s a no-no on here. You could have given your reasons for why you thought the stats will be better without making it about him or why he posted.

  • Lexie O’Neill

    Now, that’s a good idea.

  • Mason

The funny thing is that some people once said they couldn’t wait for the Mumfordian neo-folk popularity to pass but changed their tune when their snowflakes jumped on the bandwagon lol!

  • Mason

    :)

  • jayidrocks

I went under this link ( of ukmix ) and one page back I found the Top-20 album releases for the years from 2004 till 2012 and looked, how the American Idol alumi did:

    2004 02 K. CLARKSON – Breakaway 6,285,761

    2005 02 C. UNDERWOOD – Some Hearts 7,316,041

    2006 03 C. DAUGHTRY – Daughtry 4,942,393

    2007 06 C. UNDERWOOD – Carnival Ride 3,314,000

    2008 Nobody

    2009 06 C. UNDERWOOD – Play On 2,194,037
    17 C. DAUGHTRY – Leave This Town 1,300,831

    2010 Nobody

    2011 14 S. MCCREERY – Clear as Day 1,163,802
    17 K. CLARKSON – Stronger 1,055,214

    2012 07 C. UNDERWOOD – Blown Away 1,572,000
    19 P. PHILLIPS – The World From…. 1,035,000

There are no Top 20 lists for 2002 and 2003 , but I dont think, that Ruben ( 1,8 Mill. sales ) and Clay (2,78 Mill.) reached the Top 20, if we look how the overall album sales went down with the years (and #20 of 2004 had over 3 Mill. sales).
So only 5 alumi and only 4 AI winners could reach the Top 20.

EXACTLY. Questioning a person’s motives is a form of attack, and not part of a civil discussion. I suggest you read my guidelines before you post here again.

  • Incipit

Hah! That’s funny, curlyenta – banjos and fiddles are the real instruments for playing #realmusic??

I guess I prefer the “fake” instruments that people use to play all the #fakemusic. Like someone shredding on electric guitars plugged in to a Marshall Stack, with distortion riding the edge and drum kits with a double pedal and a crash ride for the cymbals – and heavy bass guitars and tenor saxophones and keyboards and electric organs and barrelhouse pianos and clarinets and trumpets and ‘stuff like that there’ too.*wink* I never get tired of ‘that’ #fakemusic. Bwahahaha!

Mumfordian Style = Acoustic Folk Music, IMO. It’s possible to shred on a banjo, I suppose – as in “Dueling Banjos” which is an impressive piece for the sheer expertise of the playing – but that’s an instrumental – and even though I like instrumentals very much, I don’t even think they use the term “shred” in the country folk genre, no matter how “real” it is. And yes, I am allergic to Mumfordian Style Music, anyway. Heh.

What was the NEED for Curly to COMMENT about Daughtry? Give me a reason to mention the band? There’s absolutely no reason. It was a straight out attack on Daughtry for no apparent reason. I’ve noticed it many, many times with him or her. I’m not sure what gender it is. I believe that it’s a two way street and if they just get at Daughtry for no reason. I will get at Taylor Hicks for no reason.

I’ve read your guidelines and I would love to give my opinion if you didn’t delete my comments. You’re probably more of a Hicks than a Daughtry fan. I get it. Just don’t delete my comments because it was my opinion about Hicks.

You deleted comments that I posted about Hicks; where I only said something about Hicks and nobody else. So why should those comments be deleted? Hmm. It seems to be double standards.

  • dd999

Thanks. I know the clerk, when I asked, said they’ll have more within a couple weeks. I also remember talking to the Billboard lady, one time before, and she said you have no idea how many albums we have, that just sit on the shelf forever without being sold..confirms your comment.Thank goodness, though, that, that isn’t the case with my favorite singers!!

  • Karen C

In 2009, David Cook had the # 13 album of the year, so that should also be on the list.

  • jayidrocks

No, Davids album was released 2008. It was sold over 1,5 Mill. times, but #20 of 2008 had over 1,6 Mill.

  • Karen C

It was released in Nov of 2008, most of the sales were in 2009. It was on the Billboard list as the top 13 of 2009.

  • jayidrocks

The lists here are refering to the release dates of a year ( and the overall sales from release date till now ) not to the yearly sales.

  • LongKissGoodnight

People who took the time to collect this information used different methodology.
The albums that were released during the same calendar year are sorted by their total sales, vs. sales from one particular Billboard’s “chart year” (that runs from the first week of December to the final week in November) to which you are referring to.

  • Lexie O’Neill

I think they are for the year listed. So, in 2009, Carrie Underwood was the only Idol who landed in the Top 20 sales for the year. And, overall, the OP noted that only 5 Idol alum have ever landed in the Top 20 for any year.

Sorry I repeated the response above…it wasn’t showing up when I came here to view.:))

  • Karen C

I see what you mean now.

  • Lexie O’Neill

Something struck me about those numbers, though. For Scotty, can’t say for others, but last official report, he was at 1, 187,000…and that was several weeks ago, so the # above is out of date. Oh, well, doesn’t negate the original point.

  • Mateja Praznik

It’s a list of bestselling albums that were released in 2012 (in the US) . So basically each of this albums was released sometime in 2012 and the numbers represent the sales up to November 24.

What was the NEED for Curly to COMMENT about Daughtry? Give me a reason
to mention the band? There’s absolutely no reason. It was a straight out
attack on Daughtry for no apparent reason

She has every right to have an opinion on Daughtry, no matter who else she’s a fan of. Again. Bringing what YOU think are the OP’s motives into the discussion is OFF TOPIC and I will delete the comment every time. Keep up the over-defensive behavior, and I ban you.

I believe that it’s a two way street and if they just get at Daughtry for no reason. I will get at Taylor Hicks for no reason.

And I will ban you for that kind of behavior. The tit for tat thing is childish, and it doesn’t fly here sorry.

I get it. Just don’t delete my comments because it was my opinion about Hicks.

If you had rebutted her comment and kept it focused on Daughtry, which was what her original comment was about, I would not have deleted it.

When the subject of the post/comment is Taylor Hicks, you are welcome to share your opinion, no matter how negative.

Hicks; where I only said something about Hicks and nobody else.

Again, you were just retaliating against the op because she dissed your precious snowflake. A dumb fanwar would have been the result, and I don’t tolerate fan wars here.

As far as who I’m a fan of. LOL. I don’t stan any of these reality show contestants to the point where I get angry or seek retaliation if somebody disses them. I’ll save my righteous indignation for the people I know and love in my real life.

Now, if you have any more to say on the subject, take it to email.

  • DBfan

LMAO, mj. What a crock, especially the last part. Some of us do remember what went on here in 2006. So that’s what you did, ban the Daughtry fans one by one. Go ahead. It really doesn’t change a single thing.

  • justmefornow

So surprised, but still glad, to see Parachute still charting over a week later with ZERO radio play. The hard core fan base all bought the single on 11/22. Glad to see others are discovering and liking it.

    Bring on radio in January!!

  • DragonFly

    You’re right—not bad!

  • CB40

Kelly’s album is doing great this weekend!

  • fuzzywuzzy

It was discounted for Black Friday and I think that radio play is starting to have an impact.

  • heartly

Ever since Tuesday after her Today Show interview and performance, the album jumped up to the top 10 on itunes. The lower price has for sure pushed it top 4 (along with Michael Bubles) and has been as high as #2.

Radio play has definitely kicked in and I think several stations were running her radio special this weekend too that included playing most of the album. There was at least one other station that also played a different hour long q&a with her and there were about 10 songs off the album played on that. Then there’s HGTV that are using a couple songs in several different station promos.

So basically, everything kind of perfectly came together this past week. She has 3 more promo spots this week, if everything is still as planned (they cancelled all overseas promo because she’s been so sick).

When the sales numbers come out, I think this week will really show the WalMart impact because she’s been ahead of the Ducks at all the other traceable outlets all week.

  • standtotheright

False choices, there. ALL instruments, from banjos to Moog synthesizers, are “real” instruments.

It’s Christmas time, so it’s timely to go back and read the Velveteen Rabbit: when the player loves the instrument enough, it becomes Real, no matter how many jaded observers try to draw distinctions between “real” and “fake”.

And as for shredding, anyone who argues that people can’t shred on a banjo has never seen the Avett Brothers live. (Marcus Mumford gets overwrought and keeps writing the same chord progressions over again; that doesn’t mean that all folk-rock bands or songs are the same, or even all entirely acoustic. One can run banjos and fiddles through amps the same as guitars.)

  • Incipit

“False choices, there. ALL instruments, from banjos to Moog synthesizers, are “real” instruments.”

Exactly my point, standtotheright . Perhaps my reply, couched in that False Dichotomy, was too facetious to be clear? My bad. To clarify, There is no #fakemusic/#realmusic – there is only subjective musical preferences.

  • jpfan2

Since the album opened at 58k or so why would anyone expect it to sell 40 to 50k the 2nd week. Normal drops are at 65 to 70 percent. Of course Black Friday should cushion that significantly but not to the point that the 2nd week drop would only be 20 percent or so.

  • Jason Gorny

I heard UTT and WC on the radio today in Chicago.

  • Jason Gorny

Well at this point, I think Wrapped in Red will be able to sell 500k by the end of the year and certified gold.

  • standtotheright

Sure, but there’s also objective data to discuss.

AFAIK, there is no data suggesting that current music listeners are making binary choices between folk rock OR boy bands, even on CHR. Interestingly, Passenger and 1D’s chart rankings are right next to each other, and both have a distance to go before being top 10 on the charts. (The fact that Wake Me Up [folk/EDM] and Demons [vaguely folk-tinged alt rock] are both top 3 actually presses back against the narrative further.)

If anything, there’s objective data that 1D still has a sizable base of young fans with parents who will buy albums for them, and that’s probably a much better explanation for their sales than whether or not some people subjectively prefer folk rock, active rock, or pop rock.

  • Hugh29

Pentatonix! All four of their albums are charting on Itunes top 100 right now. Love it.

  • Kariann Hart

Loved your message about “The Velveteen Rabbit” and reference to what is real.

  • CB40

Definitely, and the Christmas special is set for December 11th too!
