Last week, Billboard published its 2012 Year End wrap-up. They summarize who had the best-selling albums and songs in a large variety of categories for the Billboard year (running from mid-November to mid-November each year). There are a LOT of charts and this is a busy time of the year, so it took a while to get through them all (although I did skip the Tropical charts and most of the top album/imprint lists).

My eyes glazed over at points, so mega-apologies in advance if I missed anybody. Please feel free to post an update if you notice an omission so that your fellow-fans can see the achievement as well.

Note that BB list sizes run the gamut from 200 entries to 5.

Big year for Kelly, Carrie, Carly and One Direction! Congrats to all :)

  • milwlovesadam

Congrats to so many Idols for charting so well.

  • girlygirltoo

That is a lot of charts. Thanks for posting — hope your eyes have recovered from looking at all that :)

  • weareallinnocent

    Amazing lists! Thanks for compiling~

I do admit to tiring of Susan Boyle topping Adam Lambert (and I’m sure he finds it unbearable.) Heh. ;-)

On the up side, Queen did announce via twitter that their “tour” with Adam was named #1 live show by Gigwise. :-)

  • DB987

So much work thanks always fun to track everyones progress/success.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/2GSMAIVVJS4KFW5L3XHBUO46DA LUCIE

I see Scotty has made it on quite a few different charts. Looking forward to what 2013 is going to bring and him releasing his sophomore album.

    Congrats Scotty

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

Oh, man, that’s a lot of charts! Kirsten, you’re a trooper for tackling that morass of accomplishments.

  • http://twitter.com/CanadianLady2 CanadianLady

Nice to see Scotty and Phillip there so much. Especially Scotty. :)

And also great to see Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. I like him a lot too. Waiting for his “own” album to come.

And being Canadian, I should add that it’s nice to see Carly Rae doing so well. Just not my kind of music.

  • heartly

Hot damn, that’s a lot of charts!  Thanks Kirsten for wading through all of them.

  • Karen C

I’ve been keeping a list of the idol winner’s and album ups debut albums on the BB200 year end, and I’ve updated it to include Scotty’s album.

    2003 Kelly Clarkson – #31

    2004 Ruben Studdard – #31
    2004 Clay Aiken – #43
    2005 Fantasia – #27
    2006 Carrie Underwood #1
    2007 Taylor Hicks #74
    2007 Daughtry #1
    2008 Jordin Sparks #35
    2009 David Cook #13
    2009 David Archeleta #59
    2010 Adam Lambert #29
    2010  Kris Allen #115
    2012 Scotty McCreery #32
Not sure if I missed 2011, but I believe neither Lee’s or Crystal’s made the list.

Kind of interesting is that quite a few of the winners are about the same, around high 20′s to 40. I think this roughly accounts for differences in sales over the years

Also, this is for the year after their debut albums came out, so if the earlier idols albums came out a different time of year, they might be affected, but these were still the highest they reached.

  • CB40

Love seeing Kelly all over the charts 10 years into her career, and #1 on AC!!

  • http://twitter.com/Stooch101 Stooch

I love seeing all Idol alum. doing well on BB charts, the one thing that bothered me is Phillip Phillips being in Rock categories.  Acoustic guitar doesn’t = Rock :)

#35 Daughtry – Crawling Back To You
    #36 Adam Lambert – NCOE

Not to start a “what is rock and what is not” debate again, but I agree, really???
    Please.

  • Axxxel

Not a Daughtry fan here, but I went to his 1 hour concert in 2010 once and I liked all his songs… No idea about the song titles except “Home”… Therefore I was glad to see his name in a lot of the lists above !!

Kind of interesting that a video that made #36 for the year never once made the countdown or for that matter, was never even put on the countdown! Things that make you go “Hmmmm!” Kind of validates what we here have suspected about sales & radio charting being weighted heavily.

  • heike hoffmann

Off-course he is in some Rock-catagories ( with “Home”), like The Lumineers and Mumford and Sons. Folk-rock  is also some sort of rock-music.
And Phillip himself is presenting the rock-genre arguably, you could see it in his AI-perfomances  and also in his album which songs are mostly Jazz-rock or Folk-rock. I have more a problem that he is on Billbord in some Pop-categories, because Pop isn´t his genre.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ACMLXLYSSX73RNYQOUZWSO2I4U Enough already!

Thanks for all your hard work.   This has been a banner year for Kelly.  Can’t remember her having so much success in a while.   Very happy for her.  Glad to see Adam and Daughtry on some of these lists.  Wish Kris could have gotten more attention.  Not a PP fan so don’t get his popularity from the get go, but do understand our Country stars who are killing it.  Wouldn’t be surprised to see another country winner on Idol12–WGWG but a little bit country.   Would be surprised to see hip hop winner with the current demographics of this show.   btw Simon needs to realize there is more to “star” power than a big name.  I believe people who can talk, laugh and appear human would be a nice change.

  • http://twitter.com/BamadansPad Danny Latham

    Crystal’s album was #181 on BB200 in 2011.

  • heike hoffmann

Only because you are not a PP fan, a lot other people can´t like him or his music? Let everybody have their own opinion and taste.

  • getaway1

I think that has more to do with Home crossing over to Pop audiences.  But The World From The Side Of The Moon has been #1 on Billboard Rock Albums Chart ever since it debuted last month.  And Phil’s home genre has always been AAA.

  • justmefornow

I just checked that BB chart. The Soundtrack to Breaking Dawn is on there at #11 and Trans-Siberian Orchestra is on at #7.
I guess what’s considered Rock nowadays is pretty vague, lol.

My bad, going further I’ll reference what I consider Rock as Hard Rock.

  • Anny_nanny

It’s your personal opinion. I almost don’t listen to hard rock, this now do not know how to play, but I love the rock. Not folk-, but the blues-. The rock is not “pretty vague” now, it was always so, as of now the country does not surprise anyone that’s  Cash and Underwood in the same category.

Amazing how many of Carries songs in Album one are still so popular.

  • http://twitter.com/DorkAngel DorkAngel-GBW

Good to see David Archuleta on the BB year end charts in his absence. He also topped the Pinoy MYX 2012 Countdown with his “Forevermore” music video.  “I’ll Never Go” also made the countdown at #18. His single, “Wait”, is on the MYX International Top 20 at #20.
Kelly has had a great year with her music and getting engaged too. Congratulations to all the Idols for their accomplishments! Hope next year is even better for them all!! http://reynthology.blogspot.com/2012/12/david-archuletas-forevermore-lands-on.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+ReynsRoom+%28Reyn%27s+Room%29

  • irockhard

“My bad, going forward I’ll reference what I consider Rock as Hard Rock.”

Me too. Very unpopular opinion I’m sure but for me:

If you can make arguments AGAINST it being rock then it’s NOT, if you CAN’T make arguments against it being rock then it IS.

Arguments can be made against bands lile Coldplay and Mumford & Sons being rock. Nobody can argue that hard rock is not rock.

Rigid position maybe but until mainstream rock gets some balls onto it again and stops it’s downward spiral into watered down mush I’m sticking to it.

  • heike hoffmann

Its generally difficult to put singers to one special genre these days. While Scotty is a classis Country-singer for me, I have problems to consider Carry and Taylor as Country-stars, because their songs are  a way to poppy. But maybe is that the reason for their success, because they are presenting more than one genre.
Or take we Pink: I would consider her as rock-artist  mainly because of her voice, but she is listet at the genres Rock, Pop and R&B on Wikipedia.

  • mjsbigblog

    Reminder:

Let’s stick to talking about the artists here and avoid re-hashing the off-topic genre arguments we’ve had a million times already. Thanks.

  • Kirsten

Not sure if I missed 2011, but I believe neither Lee’s or Crystal’s made the list.

Lee did not make the year end chart for the BB200, but as Danny noted, Crystal did.

Also debuting that year was Scotty. He dropped his album “Clear as Day” about a month before the end of the BB Year. That one month-ish of sales was enough to have the album appear 57th for that year while his Walmart album was 174th.   If he had dropped at the start of the BB year and his sales were the same, he would have had a top 10 album.

That’s one quirk of comparing these year-end rankings. If you drop just before the year end, you end up splitting your big selling weeks between years. Thus, Idols like Scotty, Archie and Kris who dropped before Black Friday appear to do relatively worse than they did.  If you drop Black Friday, you get to count a full year’s worth of sales. Still, this would always happen because albums are dropped all year long and somebody is going to end up releasing near the end of year boundaries.

    Official update:
    9 8 PHILLIP PHILLIPS Home 9023 8354 669 58.881

Home gets a new peak #8 on POP (Mediabase) this week, after missing it just by a hair last week.
This song has a nerve-racking tendency to get to a new peak positions by Monday mornings, instead of Sunday evening, so we have to wait a whole week for official update.

If everyone stick to current tendencies we can expect ‘One More Night’ and ‘Let Me Love You’, and possible Kesha’s ‘Die Young’ falling under Home by the end of the next week.
And ‘Beauty And A Beat’ and ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ certain to jump ahead, with Pink’s ‘Try’ likely moving at a breathing-down-the-neck distance.
All in all I would say, unless it suffers too strong of year-end top 40 countdown effect, we can expect Home either to stick at it’s current position or move up a spot in next week or two.

    Hi CanadianLady,

Landau’s album (“That’s Life”) was released on November 21, 2011.  He should have another album out, possibly as soon as Spring 2013.  He may also have a Christmas album out in 2013.  If you can’t find his album locally, you should be able to pick it up on Amazon.

    Hi Teresa,

Sorry not to reply sooner. Long story, but I just got back in to the blog.

I have Landau’s first album. What I meant by his “own” album was that it sounded as if he had written a lot of songs and wanted to create an album of them. I look forward to that – and to anything else he puts out.
