American Idol XIII Atlanta Auditions - Recap, Live Blog, Videos - 2014

The American Idol XIII auditions roll into Atlanta, Georgia tonight! The episode is only 1 hour long. Plan accordingly…

A slew of uber-talented hopefuls flew by so fast, I could barely keep up. Not that I’m complaining. I continue to be entertained by this seasons audition round. Viewers who have tuned out and not returned are really missing out. It makes me want to hit the road and evangelize Idol!

Host Ryan Seacrest was back in his hometown, and what could be cuter than his mom waking him up in his childhood bed on the first day? Or mom fussing over him in the waiting room? Ryan’s such a mama’s boy.

Harry continues to be the font of awesomeness that he has been throughout the auditions. Not only do the hopefuls respect him, but they fear him a little. He’s already the guy whose opinion totally matters. There hasn’t been a judge with that kind of impact since Simon Cowell left the show. Harry’s presence is that much more powerful because, unlike Simon, he LOVES and KNOWS music. He brings a substantive voice that has been sorely missed.

My favorite tonight, by far, was singer-songwriter Jess Meuse. She has a commanding presence and impressive songwriting skills. Iconoclasts like Jess usually don’t fare well on Idol, however. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the new producers will create a safe space for her.

Cold Open: Hopefuls are woken up by their moms. It’s time to audition for American Idol! Nobody wants to wake up. But it’s a big day c’mon. OMG IT’S RYAN SEACREST AND HIS MOM. Ryan doesn’t want to wake up either.  Sleeping in his childhood bed. TOTAL LULZ.

Ryan is especially peppy because Atlanta is his hometown.

Majesty Rose – “Violet Hill” by Coldplay – Wearing a headband of giant roses, Majesty begins singing prettily. Such a pretty voice. But once she hits the second verse, her vocal opens up to reveal an unexpectedly powerful vocal. This African American singer is arresting, and a real original. Incredible dynamics. And an inspired song choice.  Harry is impressed with her elegance and subltly. Jlo loves that she’s effortless, because Miss Jennifer has  got to work so hard. Keith says she completely pulled him in. 3 yeses. “Your golden ticket, your majesty,” says Harry as he hands it to her. A little stunned, she doesn’t react until she greets her family in the waiting room. Then, it’s a major celebration!

Majesty Rose – Audition – American Idol 13 by IdolxMuzic

Jesse Cline – 19 – “Washed by the Water” We see him working at his job–a gas station attendant. Goofy and a total schlub,  I wouldn’t look at this guy twice if he were pumping my gas. But once he opens his mouth to sing, there’s something about it. Maybe it’s the unabashed joy he brings to his performance. Harry calls him a believable singer. Keith was on board in “nanoseconds.” A born singer, he says.

Jesse Cline – Washed by the Water – American… by IdolxMuzic

Alyson Ragona – 19 –  A pink haired girl sings Bohemian Rhapsody while accompanying herself on a ukulele. It’s as strange as it sounds. Her giant cat shirt freaks out Harry. 3 nos

Chris Medina – 23 – “Chasing Pavement” by Adele – NO NOT THAT CHRIS MEDINA. This one has a puppy named bubby with him, which Harry holds protectively while he performs.  Chris has a smooth, soothing voice and nice phrasing.  When Chris finishes, Harry asks, “Do you know that song, ‘I have a small plastic bag and a towelette’” The room cracks up. “I believe you when you sing,” says Keith. “I believed you, I believe I have a wet spot on my pants,” Harry deadpans. ” Keith asks “From the dog?”  Harry, in a nerdy voice, “No. Dogs been great. This is a personal matter.” As he leaves, Harry jokes that he’s trying to shed the “Harsh Harry” reputation. Jlo snarks that its going to take more than playing nice with a dog. Ha! 3 yeses

Chris Medina – Chasing Pavement – American Idol 13 by IdolxMuzic

Kristen O’Connor – 24 –  ”Good Morning Heartache” by Billie Holiday – She’s a nurse tech. And there she is as work, in her scrubs. There’s a lot of voiceover–talk about being the light in someone’s day at work– as she sings. But what we hear reveals a big voiced girl. Holy high notes! Emily Piriz -17 – “Mama Knows Best” by Jesse J. – Big voiced girl number 2. This one is soulful. She’s been watching American Idol since she was a little girl. Both singers are through to Hollywood.

Kristen Oconnor & Emily Piriz – Auditions… by IdolxMuzic

Ben Briley – 24 – “Arms of a Woman” by Amos Lee – He’s a little nasally, but it’s not entirely unpleasant. Shift to Ben talking about his wife and life at home. Keith loved the sound of his voice. Harry compared it to Gumbo, a pot full of influences, stirred just right. Jlo noted his nasally tone, but she kinda loves it (Hm, I’m on the fence.) “That’s brother Gumbo right there,” declares Harry. Ben does NOT want to be called Gumbo. Ha. 3 yeses

Ben Briley – Arms of a Woman – American Idol 13 by IdolxMuzic

Nica Nishae – 24 – “Natural Woman” by Aretha Franklin –  Nica plans on doing the best that she can so that “the remember Nica Nishae.”  The yeses come surprisingly fast considering a shouty performance that was strident on the top notes. I found her tone harsh. - 3 yeses.

Nica Nashae – Natural Woman – American Idol 13 by IdolxMuzic

Jordan Brisbane – 15 – “If I Were Your Man” – He cooks at his high school.  He believes he has what it takes to “shut American Idol down.” And he pretty much does!  He’s trying too hard, but he’s 15. For a teen, his confidence is impressive. Harry advises him to be careful when he sings runs. He thinks he’s a pretty good singer, but he’ll be better when he’s older. Jlo agrees. Keith thinks he has raw talent.  But rather than sending him off til he’s matured, Jordan gets 3 yeses.  Harry thought his face was so beautiful, Jordan should be in movies.

Jordan Brisbane – If I Were Your Man… by IdolxMuzic

Oh. Let’s pimp Phillip Phillips! He auditioned in Savannah, GA. Clips of a hopeful, Sam Burchfield,  jamming out at a Phillip concert a few days before his audition…

Sam Burchfield – 22 “I Want To Be Like You” from Jungle Book –  And here he is…performing a Disney cover. I’m not a huge fan of Disney music (I know. Kill me now) but this is kind of charming! Sam is full of fun.   Jennifer likes what she heard. Keith compliments his guitar playing, but also loves his voice. Harry says no, he found the put on accent Sam employed a little precious.  It’s a good point. Sam took on a character to perform. He really needed a second song to prove that he’s more than a novelty. Jlo and Keith say yes, Sam will be able to prove his authenticity when he gets to Hollywood.

Sam Burchfield – I Want To Be Like You… by IdolxMuzic

Jessica Meuse – “Blue Eyed Lie” – She’s from the tiny town of Slapout, Alabama, and is a self-described road warrior. Harry notes that she has a Stevie Nicks vibe. And he would be correct. She’s Stevie, with the gravelly voice and pronounced vibrato, but with a darker edge. Her performance is compelling and the song reveals a promising singer-songwriter. Harry calls her “low maintenance,” a gal who would just kick back with the crew back stage. She says she’s a solo acoustic act, used to carrying the act on her own. Keith notes that she plays like someone used to carrying the rhythm and the melody–all parts of the performance–herself. The sum is better than the parts, he says. Golden ticket in hand, Jess cries in the waiting room. It’s going to be interesting to see how this obviously strong-willed women gets on with the trappings of Idol.

Jessica Meuse – Blue Eyed Lie – American Idol 13 by IdolxMuzic

Jared Cotton – A horrible sounding contestant sings. Will he go home or Hollywood? YOU CAN VOTE VIA TWITTER.  After the break. Yep. He’s going home. That 56 percent of you actually thought he would make it to Hollywood kind of freaks me out.

Travis Hunter Brown -. Ryan’s mom gives this crazily styled hopeful some fashion advice out in the holding room. She should have told him to head back home. He’s awful. A montage of terrible singers follow.

Lauren Ogburn – “Fancy” by Reba –  Lauren walks in, all tough, with an American flag headband.  She’s going to make sure you don’t mistake her for a girly girl.  She’s a throw back, with a gritty, southern fried sound that reminds me  a little of  Skylar Laine from Season 11.  The judges are really impressed. Jlo utters that dreaded word, “goosies.”  Lauren admits she’s intimidated by Harry, whom she’s “heard things about.”  Harry thinks her look is a bit try hard (yes, we get it!) but he likes her singing. Keith is enthusiastic, calling her “authentic.” 3 yeses.

Lauren Ogburn – Fancy – American Idol 13 by IdolxMuzic

Next, are two returnees, Neco Starr and Caleb Johnson. Both are back to redeem themselves. Caleb had screwed up royally in Las Vegas Season 10. Neco was undercooked the last time he auditioned.  Harry didn’t get Neco, but he said yes, because he thinks he’s a talented guy. Jlo said yes, Keith said no.  Caleb delivered a powerful audition that impressed all three judges.  Both are Hollywood bound!

Neco Starr and Caleb Johnson – Auditions… by IdolxMuzic

Bria Anai – 15 – “One and Only” by Adele –  by Momager is on hand. Harry loves her bright purple lips. This girl is almost scarily mature and self possessed, her singing assured. Theres a touch of playacting here, a bit of pageant bot at work. But she’s got the goods. No doubt, she’s been at this for awhile. The judges are really stuck on her lips! But, they find her singing amazing. 3 yeses

Bria Anai – One & Only – American Idol 13 by IdolxMuzic

The video previews teased the return of Pants on the Ground guy dancing with Harry, but it wasn’t shown tonight. Huh.

44 golden ticket holders head to Hollywood from Atlanta!    163 golden tickets so far.

Salt Lake City is next!

  • Schmordan

Ryan and his mom are ADORABLE. Love it.

  • Matthew Kitson

Why isn’t she being pimped as hard as marialle? Wow, insanely good

  • Nedsdag

She did a decent job of a favorite song of mine.

  • jcabby

Majesty is a cool gal. Love her vibe.

  • chillj

Wow. I love that girl. Understated, lovely voice. I will buy her album now.

  • scoobynacks

It wasn’t forced. She just felt it and delivered on technique she admitted she’s worked on. Trusting that it’ll be there when you emote is not amateur at all. She’s a natural with a work ethic. Nice.

  • wonderings

Lovely, and such a change to the big & overwrought showoffy auditions. Fab song choice too – Violet Hill is not something we’ve heard 8 million times before….

  • listening

I was totally in love with Majesty Rose. I was digging her tone how delicate and how effortless her vocals were until she started to belt. I felt her straining to hit those notes and it came off as a tad sharp like it was riding the edge.

I wish she hadn’t tried to put power in her voice, if she cuts that stuff out i’m totally down with her. But yeah she deserves that ticket.

  • Matthew Kitson

Exactly. She was like Corinne Bailey Are (put your records on) during the soft sections, and then boom, like Emeli Sande

  • Matthew Kitson

    Eh, he wasn’t anything special

  • HermeticallySealed

    Chris Medina part deux?

  • LeahKittyS

Different guy, same name. I don’t see him going past Hollywood. But the dog is cute. I have a thing for black labs; our friends always had them.

  • chillj

I’m going to bet this Chris has PTSD; hence, letting the dog come to the audition.

  • HermeticallySealed

Yeah, I know different guy, just thought it funny. Doesn’t seem like it’d be that common a name. lol

  • scoobynacks

Yeah the ‘this dog comes everywhere with me’ thing was weird without some explanation we haven’t heard. You can’t just expect to do that with a non-assistance dog. You’re right, I bet the Army National Guard thing is a tip off. I hope he’ll be okay in the competition. If it is PTSD, my heart goes out to him.

  • listening

    Ben’s voice/singing style is annoying.

  • jcabby

Did Harry say ‘Brother Gumbo’? LOL

  • yaddabing

How in the world do they have Skyview in the background moving??

(the background is of Downtown, yet they filmed in Midtown.)

  • Anna106

From the comments.. I missed the best so far (1st one), but so far tonight, I’ve been underwhelmed. Hopefully it picks up quickly.

  • Matthew Kitson

Producers are doing an excellent job with the auditions thus far. Just saw its already over 20 minutes past the hour, flying by. Usually tends to drag

  • http://www.mjsbigblog.com/ mjsbigblog

It’s all green screen. Same deal in Boston. I noticed the fake background immediately.

  • CB40

Majesty Rose, my first REAL favorite of Season 13!!!!

  • Anna106

    Don’t care for shouty singers…

  • dabney_c

Letting through too many mediocre singers tonight.

  • Matthew Kitson

    Too much vocal gymnastics

  • listening

Nica bored me and something was off about her voice. Also she acted like she was singing bigger than she actually was.

  • LeahKittyS

Well, for once the judges are telling him to dial it back there. Shows you what a good panel we have this year.

  • Sassycatz

JLo really leans on Harry’s analysis — which is probably smart! ;-)

  • Anna106

The 15 year old is just imitating singers…why didn’t they tell him to get some experience and come back.

  • Amy Beth

    Baby face !

  • AGM2123

Did I miss anything exciting? Was watching Community for the first half hour.

  • yaddabing

Ah okay. I knew it was fake, I just thought it was an enlarged photo or something.

  • scoobynacks

Melinda Doolittle killed me when she told Slezak point blank you gotta have someone to send home in Hollywood. His eyes got big and he burst out laughing. It’s not that some people aren’t pleasant and if I told someone about them, I might say they’ve got a nice singing voice, but the Grammys are coming up. Imagine them on the stage. There are people that you feel could belong there with a little more polish and image work. The right songs written for them maybe. Others just don’t have the voice at that level and I can’t see it ever getting a ‘wow’ from a more jaded crowd. Phillip Phillips was a dark horse for Best New Artist and his label pushed someone else but he got some talk from awards pundits who speculate on that kind of thing. You ought to be good enough to get in the discussion at least.

  • Nedsdag

Just for singing this song, they should give him the ticket.

  • RodMod

Oh my gosh! My sister and I are getting a kick out of this! THIS IS OUR SONG FROM OUR MOVIE!

  • Nedsdag

Give him the ticket for singing a song from The Jungle Book.

  • listening

I agree with Harry, Sam did nothing for me. It was like he was just talking.

  • scoobynacks

Fingers crossed they don’t tell those same people to try something outside the box vocally and do more later on in the competition meaning more vocal gymnastics. I’m hoping that was prior panel confusion, maybe Randy-inspired. I think Harry will be consistent there. JLo I don’t know.

  • Anna106

    I liked Sam’s creativity…he might be interesting.

  • Sassycatz

I kind of like the novelty acts as long as they have talent. I guess Harry doesn’t.

  • Anna106

I’m from Georgia and ‘slap out of it’ is a common expression here…lol

  • Matthew Kitson

I hope Jessica goes far. Very good

  • listening

    I don’t like this girl’s tone/voice.

  • weareallinnocent

Yes please. I like her a lot. Slap out of it, indeed!

Hope she doesn’t go the way of Season 8 Jesse Langseth. So good. So sad.

  • scoobynacks

Does Idol try to make her over and take away the pink hair and edgy look is the question.

  • RodMod

She is so good! Great voice.

  • Amy Beth

Is Jess the first auditioner to cop to being a full-time musician?

  • teekee

    Hope not.

  • Sassycatz

Did Jess have any doubts? That girl is going far.

  • Matthew Kitson

Lol, Savion Wright tweeted out “idol home”

  • rayni

First show I’ve been able to watch – I need more Harry.

  • listening

I feel like all i’m doing is pooh poohing everyone, like i’m little Miss KillJoy. I can’t help it though they’re rolling out a lot of mediocre people, it is what it is.

  • scoobynacks

She’s comes in with a firmer grasp on her artistry than some others. It’s not something I’d cut lightly. I hope she does well in Hollywood. I feel like that experience and seasoning needs to be taken seriously by Idol.

  • LeahKittyS

Man, Idol is really looking up this year. The good ones just keep on coming: Majesty, Kristen, Emily, Jess, Ben (who’s friends with Janelle Arthur from last year), and I actually think Jordan can do well. One more week until we go to Hollywood!

  • Anna106

Btw, I was at that P2 concert they just showed…crowd was great! The biggest surprise was how good a musician Phillip was…his whole band was really superb!

  • scoobynacks

Ugh, another poll where America gets it wrong and it scares me when they don’t hear he’s not right for Idol. They vote.

  • Matthew Kitson

    Whoa, this Batista, haha

  • teekee

    Agree with all of this.

  • Schmordan

My hope is that those results are just made up and not based on real tweets. That’s the only way I can justify the ridiculous voting.

  • AGM2123

    Is this a real song?

  • Anna106

    no to the country girl

  • Matthew Kitson

Meh, good voice, but boring. She’s not expressing any emotion at all

  • Sassycatz

    She is good.

  • Amy Beth

Am I crazy or was she singing way too fast?

  • BonnieDee

    Yes and not enough emotion

  • Anna106

I guess I can’t hear…I thought she was terrible…and trying too hard to be tough.

  • Matthew Kitson

Look, emotion. Now do that while you sing

  • Sassycatz

She reminds me a little bit of Crystal in personality. Very deceptively strong, and definitely knows who she is.

  • scoobynacks

Did you mean to upvote or did someone downvote me and then not feel the need to explain why again? Sometimes you can’t tell when someone disagrees with your thought, doesn’t like the singer, is a troll, has a personal beef with you, whatever. Downvotes without explanation feel like the thread equivalent of a hit and run.

  • jcabby

Good critique by Harry. She doesn’t need to overdo the look.

  • Guest

I don’t know why….but I’m really excited to see pants on the ground guy return. Lol

  • LeahKittyS

Ooh, I’m liking these two returning guys as well. So with Caleb and Neco added, that’s eight auditions that impressed me. Nice job, Atlanta!

  • Anna106

Yay! I liked Nico and the last guy.

  • scoobynacks

Caleb sounds really good this year. He was good before but I think he’s gotten stronger.

  • Matthew Kitson

    Purple lipstick, ack, too bright

  • AGM2123

No, please, she just ruined the song.

  • RodMod

    Bria = Stephanie Mills.

  • Anna106

My mom lives in Lithonia so I’m going to really pull for Bria.

  • listening

I liked Caleb but Neco was overly dramatic umm something was off. I guess it was the arrangement he kept drawing out notes that shouldn’t of been. And there was like no life in his vocal.

  • RodMod

    Bria, yes, honey!

  • Sassycatz

Harry is almost too smart for this group LOL! “Dagent!”

  • AGM2123

What. Was I hearing the same thing?

  • LeahKittyS

And Bria makes nine. The purple lipstick is distracting (in a bad way) but other than that, I like it. These producers know what they’re doing.

  • Sassycatz

Seeing that map, there’s a big part of the United States not represented.

  • dabney_c

    Err, not quite.

  • teekee

Hopefully mom will let the make-up artist do the make-up. She was just okay for me.

  • imozone

Did I blink and miss the Pants on the Ground guy? The clip I saw in an earlier post looked funny.
As for the rest, I tend to agree with Harry most often. Loving the season as a whole so far. Seems to be well paced and keeps me laughing with the show, not at it.

  • weareallinnocent

Lol. Funny you ask. I’ve been cruising in and out of the comments. When I got back just now, I saw a red down vote here, and thought, don’t only my own votes turn colors? You’re completely correct, I missed with my up vote! It was indeed a hit and run, but not the kind you meant. :-)

  • LeahKittyS

Nope, they cut that scene. Good. These things are only funny once for me. Leaves more room for people who can actually sing.

  • scoobynacks

    Heh, no worries. :)

  • Sassycatz

Well, now we know why a lot of midwesterners don’t win! They don’t show up!

  • Karen C

At least 2 of them did :)

  • teekee

Did start to upvote, but decided to reply instead. Don’t know about the down vote.

  • No Thanks

I just got home from work. OMG. I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVEEEE! Majesty!!!! Dayum girl! This may just be the year of BGWG (Black Girl With Guitar).

  • XxYogurtxX

I didnt like Emily but Majesty was really good

  • CanadianLady

Loving this year so far. Lots of people I like.

Only thing that would make it better would be zero “joke” contestants – i.e. putting people through who aren’t close to good enough to make fun of them.

  • CanadianLady

Jennifer’s was a bright pink yesterday and looked just as bad.

  • windmills

Wow, missed tonight’s show but was catching up through MJ’s videos and had to log in to comment on Majesty Rose. That was an incredible audition – LOVED the song choice, loved her choices when she sang it, loved her voice. Though there’s a bunch of auditions I’ve liked so far this season, Majesty Rose is the 1st one to really wow me. My favorite audition in several years – intelligent and sophisticated, sensitive to the lyric and emotional. Dang, she blew me away.

P.S. I’d watched the preview of Jess Meuse’s audition and really dug her audition too.

  • jan

I agree – right now – for me – she is the most memorable.

  • Bugme Nomor

“Major Tom Cat” is the funniest thing I’ve heard Harry say.

  • macfae

    Fancy ? yes. unfortunately.

  • macfae

Randy will be mentoring and there is likely to be a push-pull between he and the judges regarding multiple things with RUNS being at the top of the list.

  • hayes

Majesty Rose. I dig it. Top of my list right now. There’s not very many names that stick with me during the audition phase, but she’s one of em. Ethan Thompson is the other one.

  • LeahKittyS

I agree about Majesty Rose. I loved her singing anyway, but the name works. It’s like The Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) said in his debut when he met his new companion, Amelia Pond: “It’s like a name in a fairy tale.”

  • Richard

Nurse Kristen O’Conner was not as good as the rock in roll nurse AMANDA OVERMYER back in 2008 Season 7.

  • RemusL

Sometimes it’s important to give certain competitors the chance to pick up much needed experience in the Hollywood rounds, even if they get eventually get cut.

  • Happyhexer

It seems like they ALL have guitars this year, lol. And a fair number are doing their own material, too. Either AI wants the anti-AI12, or AI is hoping to duplicate the success of a Phillip Phillips. I don’t care if the contestants are black, white, male, female, or pink polka-dot. I just hope there is diversity in musical styles. That is what I loved about AI10, my favorite season. (My real favorite is AI8 but I’ve only been watching since AI9, so I never saw AI8 in real time. But I babble.)

By the way, for all the flak that AI12 gets, two of the top four (including the winner) were African-American women (albeit without guitars). Who’s to say that those placements (1, 4) didn’t inspire some of this season’s contestants?

  • JustJam

Yup! Keep them coming! I want more BGWGs!!

  • JustJam

I think its a good idea to get more ppl that play guitars. That way viewers will finally look at other attributes before placing their votes. Guitar-players have always been favored by American viewers in the past seasons (esp. S5 – Top 2 were both guitar-players).

  • suenigma

I never really thought of Kat McPhee as a guitar player, or Taylor for that matter. It certainly wasn’t showcased on AI.

  • Happyhexer

Guitars are fine. So are other instruments. But I still want musical diversity. And contestants who are well-rounded enough not to use their instruments as a crutch.

  • BonnieDee

I’m really liking Majesty right now too. She is so unique and talented.

  • Kirsten

That was a really fun episode. Crazy talent in Atlanta.

    What I Liked:

Harry – I need to stop leading with Harry, but Idol finally did something so right on the judges table. Not only is he articulate and opinionated (I want the judges to have one), but he brings such a great vibe to the audition room. The way he gets into a song when he’s really having fun generates such energy. When you compare him to Nikki/Mariah last year who were always worried about how they looked on the camera and keeping a too cool vibe, Harry is just amazing. And the energy feeds to the other two. I want to spend time with these judges and that shows somebody did something right.

Auditioners: Man, I feel like I could create an interesting top 10 just from what I saw last night. A lot of variety and a lot of talent. Contestants I particularly liked were Majesty (I love that she can be quiet in a song), Ben (not much to look at, but I’ll just close my eyes and listen to him sing), Lauren (I agree with Harry about the accessories, but I like the sound), Jessica (I dig the song and love the grit, needs to watch the ‘tude though or she’s going to turn off the viewers), Kirsten (I want to hear more) and Bria (needs to lose the purple lipstick because I can’t take her seriously, but amazing voice). I also like Caleb’s voice, so I hope he has de-douched himself in the last couple of years.

Ryan’s Mom: She was just so cute. “You can’t spank me on national television”.

The Dog: Can she stay? Such a sweetheart. I loved how she totally perked up when she heard her master singing.

Backstories: They’ve found just the right touch. A little bit of spliced in back-story. No longer do we have to listen to minutes of sob-story at a time.

The moments: Random people in Atlanta/wherever. Gives us a feeling for each audition town and helps to set the tone.

    What I didn’t Like:

A Few Yeses: I can’t believe they said yes to Jordan. Kid has a lot of talent, but he needs to marinate for a few more years. Plus a few vocal lessons to work on his issues. If he gets through on his cute kid persona, I fear he’ll see a lot of backlash and I hate it when the kids get the backlash. He will overstay his welcome. The difference between him and Bria (who are the same ages) was remarkable. You can be 15 and ready. Jordan is not.

  • Kirsten

Does Idol try to make her over and take away the pink hair and edgy look is the question.

Why would the pink hair go? Idol is very pink hair friendly from its first season. In fact, that was a joke for a while that every season of Idol featured a pink haired girl.

  • Miz

I was surprised by some of those people being put through. But I guess they need to have some they don’t feel bad about cutting later.

Hands down for me, best of the night was Majesty.

  • Larc

Ryan said 44 people got Golden Tickets, but the Idol site showing Hollywood-bound Atlanta contestants lists 43. Somebody must have either dropped out or been disqualified along the way.

Majesty Rose is my favorite of the competition so far. I get so tired of all these chicks who come out with their shouty runs and melisma. This girl just sang and it was beautiful and emotional. First choke-up chills moment for me. Because she went soft early when she went bigger later it actually had meaning.

I’m afraid she will get lost in the group tryouts where being a big voice helps. Hope she made it.

Is it just me or does this website have A LOT of ads? I got a pop-up when I opened the page, an (incredibly annoying) video automatically running halfway down the page so I had to find it to turn it off and then the same commercial over and over again when I wanted to watch a video.

I know you are trying to make a buck but this feels very sellout to me. If you can’t avoid the ads with the videos, please stop the pop-ups and for god’s sake NEVER make a video ad auto-run – that is just rude.

I’ve watched every episode of Idol since the beginning, but as much as I rnjoy the new panel, the audition episodes have been painfully boring. I’m also not fond of the fact that once again they cast the majority of black men on this show as feminine, r&b/soul singers, and all serious white male contenders must have a guitar.

I like Harry, but his honest critiques don’t seem to matter, because Jen and Keith always say yes and overrule him.

I really do like Harry and think he is an awesome addition to the show. Having said that, I would find it extremely hard to be on a judging panel with him. He has such strong opinions and is intolerant of dissenting views to the point where he kinda ridicules or is contemptuous of any other point of view. I first saw this last year, particularly when he mentored Kree. Some things are subjective, a matter of personal preference yet any small hint of disagreement with his stance elicits a shaming condescending vibe that has been aimed at both Jennifer and Keith at different times. I will not quarrel with his intellect nor with his musicology. I have gained a modicum of respect for Jennifer as I watch her finesse her own role on the panel with a seemingly intuitive way of both agreeing with him while cutting thru the chase to set up the scenario in a way that is more favorable toward her. The three definitely seem to be figuring out the power structure within the panel but in a much more covert way than I have seen it done any other season. Not sure I would change any of it; just an observation.

MJ, Caleb, as Neco, was in Season 11.

I’m hoping that J.Lo buckles up now that she has a whole different level of judges besides her. would she dare to give out sweet nothing and producer-fed downers when there is Harry there? I think that she knows that this time she has to make better or risk looking like a fool.

If you are talking about Detroit, the background was filmed from Windsor, On Canads, on the same gloomy day.
