The New York Post adds to the rumor mill.  According to Page 6 Idol honchos have approached producer, Diddy to take a seat at the judges panel:

Could Sean “Diddy” Combs be a judge on “American Idol?” We hear producers at the Fox show have reached out to the Bad Boy Records founder and rap mogul. “Idol” has an open seat on its judging panel after Steven Tyler opted to leave the show (it recently hired Mariah Carey to replace Jennifer Lopez). Fox had no comment, nor did Combs’ rep. We hear Combs will host a party at a private villa in Ibiza this week. Hamptonites still talk of Combs’ epic “white parties” from summers past.

It sounds like Idol has talked to several candidates. Diddy could fit the “industry guy/producer” slot I think they badly need to fill. He’s also enough of a fame whore, that he’d at least consider it. But I imagine Diddy keeps himself pretty busy, apart from throwing lavish parties in the Hamptons. He’d have to fit Idol into his schedule.

I also think he and Mariah would work really well together.  She’s worked with him before and they both have a commanding presence.  For some reason I think they would have good chemistry.  They’ll have to make sure the third judge is someone really comfortable in the spot light and not afraid to speak up.

Maybe he will change his mind but with Mariah at 18 million…how much more can they afford?

Based on last year’s ad rates, Mariah’s salery will be paid for in less than four episodes, so they can afford someone else who is making $18 million dollars or more for the season.

I don’t know why Sean Combs is so respected in the industry.  It seems like his successes as a producer were a long time ago.  He hasn’t been as consistent as someone like Jay-Z.  It seems like he’s a lot more successful with the businesses that he runs that are outside of the music industry.

Well, as we saw last year, he would be interesting.  At least initially, but during the live shows he could turn into another Steven Tyler.

I’m tuckered out from all the judge rumors LOL.

Jay Z! Now we’re talking A&R heavyweights! Idol should try to get him instead, but if they can’t/won’t I’ll be happy with Diddy.

There’s actually another post in NewYorkPost about Pharrell being close to signing a deal…

    LOL exactly.

Hate diidy or whayever name hes using..does he even sing or just rap? Enuf rumors…just announce

I just saw that on their site.  I like Pharrell and really like some of the music he produces but NGL I think Diddy would be a lot more entertaining on the show because of his personality. Pharrell is someone who I would probably like if I watch the show but the combo of Diddy and Mariah would make me tune in.

Diddy doesnt strike me as the kind of guy that works for a salary … he would want a piece of the show …

  • DavieP

Ratings keep slipping so someones not watching??? Should be abt contestants but producers have made it about judges..Look at recent Voice + XF commercials…all focus on judges without a single note of singing

  • http://twitter.com/MarieAru23 Marie

Well, I think it’s pretty much all about the judges through the audition and a combination of both, through Hollywood rounds. Don’t start being more about the contestants till the live rounds I think.

It’s so weird I was recently wondering what was going on w/ Diddy. I hadn’t really heard about since Coming Home, Love that song, and I was wondering if he was still singing. I pondered that maybe he has a new group he’s making or grooming I know he’s done that through television shows. And i’ll be honest totally addicted to that. I think Diddy would be a smart choice from what i’ve seen of him on his television shows he’s totally serious about his business music and otherwise.

We’ve never had his brand of music represented on the judging panel. I feel like if he was on the show more people w/ similar styles would audition. It would diversify the talent pool w/ R&B-Hip-Hop which Idol seriously needs it feels over saturated w/ rock, country, and power singers. You breath and you run into a person singing that style on Idol.

I believe in past seasons Diddy has shown interest but ever time he’s said it would really cost Idol. But then again Mariah’s husband has always said it would cost Idol too much to get Mariah and that they can’t afford her and she was only 20 million.

At first I was like noway can Idol get Mariah and Diddy that would be too expensive but then I thought well they had Jennifer who was surprisingly worth more than I would have thought and Steven who I bet was a lot, so another set of high priced judges isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

I like Diddy wouldn’t mind if he was a judge he’s knows all aspects of the business. Singing and producing talent he’s got it all.

Diddy might be arrogant but he’s hella entertaining!  LOL!  I could see Diddy wanting a crack at signing/managing some of the singers that come on the show.

Making the Band was my show…….if Diddy does idol …….. I’d beg for an invitation to your viewing parties and I’d bring the dip or even better. Ciroc….lol.

OMG, imagine the Sean Jon, john, jean….whatever it is …commercials.

I dunno, i don ‘t recall him ever forming completely good sentences or being that clever. But I haven’t bent my neck out to find him either.

I’ll just be glad when the judges recruiting season is over.

Yes!!!! everyone has to drink Ciroc and to gain entry, one must wear all white with big black shades from the Sean John line. Or you have to be Mariah and come with a closet full of shoes or arrive in a bubble bath with full diva attitude. So much fun.

Pharrell is the most current choice, and Diddy the most entertaining. Either is a win for me so I hope they land one or the other.

  • fuzzywuzzy

In 2011, Forbes reported that Diddy had a net worth of $500 million, so any pay from Idol would simply be a matter of ego.  lol

  • tucker davis

Isn’t his son playing college football at USC this year?

  • Anonymous

Now that would be interesting (However briefly)!

TBH I’d trade Nigel & Ken as exec producers for Diddy any day!

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

I believe so.  That would be a good enough reason for Diddy to want to hang around LA for a while.  To be near his son.

I was actually hoping to come over here someday and find this exact rumor. I approve! Diddy knows the business and will be the next best thing we can get as a wise cracker to Simon Cowell.

    no, just no

No Diddy. Saw him in those making of the band shows and didn’t like him.

  • Kyle Bianchini

Ive said it on here before: Diddy would be the straight shooter/tough guy this show needs. Case in point: Making the Band. Diddy was almost ruthless in his coaching of Danity Kane and Day26 in becoming (more so Danity Kane) successful acts. He could really do well!
