    Eh?

    Eh?

Theater premieres prior to the TV premiere are now a thing. Smash did it, though without the Q&A, and I’ve heard of others. It’s a way to build buzz. This one looks pretty well-designed to get the most ardent Idol watchers to feel involved and start buzzing.

Don’t be surprised if the actual first TV episode ends up edited slightly differently from what shows in movie theaters, based on audience feedback.

It’s hard not to feel a little dissed.  There isn’t one theater within a 1000 miles of my town showing this premiere.

Chris Colfer (Kurt in Glee) uses a similar strategy to create buzz for his movie (that he wrote, co-produced and starred in) that will be in theaters nationwide in the US on 11 Jan 2013.
There will be a one off screening in several theaters on 6 Jan 2013, followed by an interactive Q&A with Chris.

Lawrencevile isnt exactly Atlanta…Its some suburb far away and I couldnt even tell you where it is.  I think Idol producers and execs are really afraid that they will lose to the Voice in the spring.  Usher/Shakira vs Mariah/Nicki.  Wonder if Cassadee can have a hit.  The Voice should have an original song that they could release immediately.  So should XF for that – even if its charity single…ONe thing that again Idol does right to get their winner much attention. The truth is there are so many talented, talented people out there and only a few get the lucky break.  Im still interested in seeing a Jessica Sanchez album – she was such a talent and I could see her exceeding P2 and being a huge star…continuing the runner up doing better …I know HOME did great but what are P2 album sales.  I havent heard much of him since it was released ( didnt even know it had been).  Carly Rose is talented but I dont like that XF totally hid her professional background from 2 movies to playing Cossette in Les Miserables on Broadway when she was much younger.  Shes not some random girl that miraculously appeared on XF. (at least cassadee’s band experience was known).  It did seem that xF also was about backstories…oh hes a construction worker who loves his wife and its his last chance.  Tate deserved to win and I wish him luck.  Just seems so many country artists now and theyre starting to win these reality shows due to rabid country fans.  Im also glad that an older guy won.  I know one won in the UK first season but he still was in his 20s I believe…Has any ‘older” XF winner been successful.  THe one thing I really liked is whoever would have won XF was someone who couldnt have appeared on Idol and that at least shows this show gives a chance to people who had no other options (although I guess Tate could have tried the Voice)

With Nicki and Mariah both taking part in the Q&A, maybe it will help theater popcorn sales.

These are same day showings. Would an hour lead time allow for any edits?

Am I misreading the original article? It looks to me like these movie theater showings happen a week before the TV premiere.

On Wednesday, Jan. 9 (7:00 PM ET/4:00 PM PT), fans in 11 cities across the country will have the exclusive opportunity to see the Season 12 premiereepisode of AMERICAN IDOL for free one week prior to its debut on FOX.

If the press release was misleading and January 9 is also the TV premiere date, then no, no editing is likely. But with a week’s lead, that’s plenty of time to incorporate audience feedback. Movies doing advance screenings do it on about that lead time fairly often.

Maybe I’m losing my mind. I thought the TV premiere date was Jan.9. Let’s check.

Never mind. I’m wrong. TV premiere is 1/16.

My first reaction was that this would be a total fail. But then I realized it’s in select cities with Idol fans signing up to be in the audience. They’ll get enough to come.

It reminds me of when I first moved to LA. We used to get in line for Preview houses. They’d often hand out invitations around the various tourist traps, and I worked in Hollywood so I’d get the invites. You never knew what you’d get to preview. It could be a TV pilot, movie, play, or even some bands. Cheap entertainment for the price of giving feedback on cards provided.

I always had to be careful filling out the audience card because you couldn’t be ‘in the business’ or they’d kick you out.

The first episode of the season usually isn’t that exciting.  I plan to not watch until they pick the contestants we can actually vote on.
