Fox Reality’s American Idol Extra debuted tonight on Fox Reality, and I’m watching it right now. The Extra cameras were filming David Hernandez as he said goodbye to the judges and castmates . Syesha Mercado was crying. All three judges hugged David, and Simon Cowell talked to him for a bit. David said that Simon thought maybe he was down because of last week’s media scandal (News of David’s history as a stripper in a gay nightclub was posted on nearly every media site).

David said he wasn’t down, but that the song choice, “I Saw Her Standing There” wasn’t his first. He wanted to sing “Let it Be”. Numbers were pulled out of a hat, and he lost. “The song I got stuck with,” he said, “Wasn’t one of my personal favorites, but I tried to make the song my own. Obviously it didn’t work out too well.”

David says he’s got some offers already. He’s upbeat and looks forward to the future.

Sanjaya Malaker is on the show, and he says he would have chosen “Michelle” if Season 6 had done a Beatles’ theme. He’s working on an album right now.

Melinda Doolittle was also interviewed, and she’s also working on a CD. “Slated to come out in June,” she says. She wrote a song with Jonny Lang. She says the album will be “a little rock grit with some funk and some soul.”

Simon Cowell thinks that David looked “Defeated…haunted.” Simon thinks the scandal got to him.

Gina Glocksen and Constantine Maroulis are co-hosts. Watching them read lame crap off of cue cards is pretty funny.

Amanda Overmyer’s song choice was also her second choice. But she says, “it ended up working out for me, and that it was the song out of all of them I should have picked anyways.”

Jason Castro related very much to the song he sang this week. He says that right now, he’s “On the verge” with someone…

David Hernandez wanted to sing “Yesterday” next week.

So….uhhhh….did they only have 12 songs and “everyone” got a number? that they pulled out of a hat? Was that the same “hat” that contained Clay’s choices for the final three (Vincent, Vincent, Vincent…)

  • JOJOSIE

I was a David H fan so was sorry to see him go. It’s interesting how they resolved issues when more than one wanted a song. People were saying he wasn’t truthful about his working at a pizza place before Idol but the infamous Dick’s I heard had been closed for sometime so I’m sure the pizza place was his most recent employment. I was also surprised that he was a college senior. I checked out one of his fansites at Idol Forums and there were some great pics of him. He must have done some professional modeling also. The young ones on that site(they think anyone over 30 is old) were hoping if he is gay that he is also bi so they’d have a chance. Oh to be young.

  • Chicago-sally

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23616232/

He should be one of the Jersey Boys Broadway show. I wasn’t a BIG fan, I thought he was just OK and could have gotten better; but I felt a little embarrassed for him once those naked pictures got out. I knew it was downhill from then on. Now on the flip side, Amanda had a drunk driving charge ==and== there are supposed to be nude pics of her out there.

Kids — your past comes back to bite you, always has.
This whole song choice thing is a little mystifying. Did the past Idols in past seasons have the same setup? I thought they had a list they chose from; not pull a number from a hat.did this change from the previous years?

Very confusing….all the ex-Idols say they didn’t get the song they wanted…something is a little fishy…

  • primeminister

Oh, David…I feel terrible for him.

I am a big Jonny Lang fan, so I’ll be checking out that song!

  • longsong

PHEW! Okay mj, you mentioned Jason, so this isn’t TOTALLY off subject, but can I just say I FINALLY downloaded iTunes, and bought all of Jason’s songs, and WOOHOO!!! Joy and Rapture!!

    Hee! I’m so hip!

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

Each week we get a different song selection story. Perhaps Nigel is always changing the process to confuse us.

Longsong, I love the studio version of “If I Fell.” Pretty. Pretty. Pretty.

Oooooh, and I can’t wait to hear more from Melinda. :-) Like the description. Wish I got this damn show. Oh, well.

Oh, and Jason, did no one tell you not to alienate all the tweens who want to be your girlfriend? I suppose “on the verge” still gives them a glimmer of hope. LOL.

  • primeminister

Oh, and Jason, did no one tell you not to alienate all the tweens who want to be your girlfriend? I suppose à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“on the vergeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ still gives them a glimmer of hope. LOL.

LOL, true. His facebook music page is full of comments from high school/college girls all wanting to marry him. There’s also a thread on that page called “I would like to ________ Jason Castro” and it is hilariously inappropriate. Those college girls have raging hormones and more than 20 different ways to express it. haha

I would join in the throng, except I like my men smart. ;)

  • t2

Jonny Lang!!! I never got the Melinda love, but Jonny Lang definitely gets my attention.

  • longsong

pj: Yeah, that stinker Jason! “On the verge”! Hmpf!

I also like his “Hallelujah”, but as others have noted, I prefer his original ending and wish they hadn’t “corrected” it.

  • longsong

primeminister, the older I get, the more I learn that you never really grow old in your mind. I have to admit to a teensy bit of heartache when I read that “on the verge” comment.

I don’t need my men smart if I just need them for an hour or two…

Yes, I scare myself sometimes as well.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I’ll be posting some video in a bit…so hang on…

  • longsong

I liked Melinda, she was a shiny, colorful star in a season that for me was painfully boring.

  • primeminister

t2- quit copying me! haha, just kidding. I must say, you have excellent musical taste. :)

(I did sort of like Melinda though…)

LOL. I’m not convinced he’s not smart. Just goofy. And 20. But who knows?

I have’t been to his facebook or any fansites, so I’m not really in the know. I swore off fansites this year, but I’m weak and cruised his forums at TWOP and they love him there. Heh.

Thanks, MJ, for everything as always. :-)

ETA: Longsong, I wish they hadn’t corrected the ending of “Hallelujah” either.

  • t2

Primeminister — as do you :-)

David Hernandez would have done soooo much better with Let It Be. Any of the early, early stuff I Saw Her Standing There/I Wanna Hold Your Hand, etc. is too much of a “period piece” to really succeed with — plus Mr. Hernandez (sniff…still miss him) has a penchant for runs and melisma which just doesn’t mix with those kinds of songs.

Having said that, at least he didn’t try to “countrify” it. However, the number one rule of AI — if you are going to be bad, be memorably bad and KLC definitely did that. That “8 Days” was right up there with “What About the Chirrun.”

  • MN Sue

Syesha was crying? I will give her the benefit of a doubt that she was crying for David and not because America put her in the bottom 3.

  • jadore

Hope David gets some good offers – he has a really good voice. I was so sad to see him go so soon, wish he had made the tour.

That is so cool that Melinda is writing a song with Jonny Lang, he is a great blues guitarist.

  • JSG

I thought JasonC came across better in the pre-song interview last week, certainly not someone who is lacking intelligence. Except for flunking music in university. That was too weired. Or wired. But even he laughed about it.

  • MN Sue

Jason’s only going to get better at handling these interviews. He’s probably never had to deal with people paying him so much attention. IMO, his responses are much more endearing than the rehearsed sh** some people spew forth.

  • Chicago-sally

MN Sue — you see a side of Syesha I don’t see. I think she’s lovely, I think she’s happy to be there, but if you read Justin Guarini’s blog, the schedule takes its toll and that may be why she comes off as cold and not likeable. His blog was very revealing about the Idols having 15 hour days…in fact, last season they said the same thing, that they didn’t get in until late night and get up early the next morning….I think that schedule throws certain types off, and maybe Syesha is that type.

There’s always room for another entertainer…and David H. is selling himself all over the internet. He’s giving interviews, he’s keeping his name out there.

I still think Broadway is his calling.

Does anybody know — when they’re eliminated, do they file for unemployment?

  • lg

Yay for Melinda! I never could see her doing gospel exclusively. “Rock grit, funk and soul” with her gospel undercurrent should be incredible. Can’t wait to hear the Jonny Lang collaboration. No doubt some soul buddies from Nashville are lending a hand.

What a difference a song choice makes – David H doing Let It Be would’ve been a whole nother story. He’ll be missed and I hope he is able to attain some degree of success in the cutthroat music biz.

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

MN Sue, not a fan of Syesha, either. I would have preferred Alex or Asia’h in her spot. Especially Alex. She would have probably been a good friend to David A, too, who seems to need some support outside of his family.

As for Jason, part of his appeal is his personality. He has one. It’s unaffected. People respond to that.

  • MN Sue

Yes, Sally, I read Justin’s blog. I’ll just leave it at that for now. Afterall, its David’s time.

  • MN Sue

David was a victim of not making a big enough impression during Hollywood week. That, coupled with the fact he didn’t enter the competition with any credentials, put him lower in the pecking order. David’s song styling sunk his battleship, not his voice.

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

I just wish we knew the truth about song choice.

David has a nice voice, but sadly, the only thing that made him stand out was the scandal.

  • primeminister

Does anybody know if Canada has a female prime minister?

Hmmm, I know Canada HAD a female prime minister before. It’s too bad I’m not Canadian, or I’d be the next one. heh ;)

David H. really does have an amazing voice and a seemingly nice personality- it’s really too bad song choice was what screwed him over. If numbers were really pulled out of a hat, then Brooke scored BIG TIME and Hernandez bombed (or at least, wasn’t so hot).

  • marfa

    primeminister, JSG –

In regard to Jason’s intelligence or lack of it: I live in the Dallas area, and the local FOX station did a piece on him earlier this week in which they showed his high school pictures. He was wearing a National Honor Society stole in his graduation photo, and they referred to him as a “merit scholar.” In addition, he finished three semesters at Texas A&M in the College of Architecture before winning a spot on Idol. A&M is a tough school to get into (and to stay in).

Not sure about flunking the music class. A&M is known for sciences, engineering, and its vet school — not much of a liberal arts curriculum. My best guess is that it was because of absences.

A&M is also conservative, and Jason is very religious, not a likely pothead despite the dreads and the mellowness. There may be more to this young man than his laid-back Texan persona would indicate.

  • idolbeat

I bought Jason’s If I fell today too. I love it! Also got Chikezie’s video, which had the amazing beginning in the song. The reviews said it was not the same in the studio verson. I’m happy with both song choices!

Pj. I prefer Alex to Syesha as well. More dynamic, more stage presence.

ok, I am so bummed. I finally got potential seating tickets in my email for AI, and it was for Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. By the time I checked on plane tickets, which were $800.00 and what I could give up to do this, the live show tickets were full. I’m trying to tell myself it was for the best but dangit, I should have just went for it and figured it out later. :(

  • longsong

Aw, idolbeat, I’m sorry! POOH! Is this a one shot deal, or can you try again for another week? Hey! Maybe you can try again for when the top five, that would be Jason, Michael J, David C, Brooke and I-don’t-care-who-else sing TWO songs each!

As for David H., for me song choice wasn’t the sinker. For some reason from the very beginning (yes, before I found out he was a hoochie-mamma), he just bored me to tears. I look at him and have complete narcolepsy.

  • St.Lucia

They pulled for choice out of a hat? Wow. That just BOTHERS me.

With 12 contestants and only roughly 25 song choices, everyone could pick two and hope no one else has picked the same one. And when they do, they pull out of a HAT?

Poor David, no wonder he crashed and burned…although I don’t think “Let it be” would have been a good choice for him anyway.

I’m just irked. THE BEST TALENT EVAH! could actually be a lot closer to the best, if they would just be able to really showcase their talent appropriately.

Crazy, idea, Nigel, why not give the kids some more songs? Oh wait, then the show would actually be REALLY good, and you always need someone to fail.

At least this week the picked out of the hat, since it seems to change all the time…so what is it next week, do they pull straws or do rock, paper, scissors?

I have such a love/hate relationship with this show.

    /rant

This is the best platform these singer/celebs can EVAH have in their lives. Melinda esp needs a big boost.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Marfa – Thanks for your insight on that. :)

I never thought Jason lacked intelligence. I’m kinda like PJ in that I think he’s just goofy, young, maybe a bit shy, and probably a LOT overwhelmed by all this. It’s amazing the attention these contestants receive, and that has to be a bit overwhelming to them.

  • MaryS-NJ

I’m still sulking that David got the boot. :down_tb:

I like his voice, didn’t think he was the worst this week (I know, it doesn’t matter) and would like to have seen him on the tour this summer. Sigh. I bought his recording anyway, along with Jason’s. Good luck David!

Melinda and Jonny Lang? I can’t wait!

  • NotInNYC

Melinda and Jonny Lang sounds like “when worlds collide”, but I’m a big Lang fan so I’ll be curious to see how the train wrecks…

As for the numbers in a hat, I got the impression it was for “choosing order”, and if you lost out, it was because someone with a number that let them choose before you selected the song you wanted.

I’ll be interested to see what they all select for their second Beatle song… There are still some real good early songs that could be stunners on the show…

  • sciencefan

I agree with those who said David H. is just as good as Elliott Yamin. I thought for sure he would make it to the Top 3. But as they’ve been saying at TMZ, songwriters have already started writing songs for him, and for David A. as well, so I think he’ll still get the music career he was hoping for.

I never got the impression Jason is unintelligent. Some people are very shy and and modest and Jason seems to be one of those. Once you get to know them, you’re amazed by their skills and talents, but they just quietly go about their business, trying not to bring too much attention to themselves. Thank you to the person who gave us the educational background info on him. Jason is exceedingly charming and I’m very happy for him. Love his light, airy style.

Pulling song choices out of a hat does seem a rather poor method when they’re going to be crucified up and down for choosing the wrong song.

I think it was Garrett who said he had chosen 3 songs, and all 3 had been previously taken, so they assigned him a 4th song he had never heard. Then he got voted off. With song choice so out of their control, it’s surprising they get criticized so much for it.

  • MrsTrep

As for Jason, doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t he look like J Travolta back in the day? He even says à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“coolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ the same way – a little like Barbarino!!! LOL

Oh, my, MrsTrep! Finally, somebody else saw it! I keep telling my sister that Jason reminds me of Heath and that I like him almost as much as I adored Heath on 10 Things I Hate About You. Heh. ;p

I also don’t mind the John Travolta comparison because I also used to swoon over that man. Heh. ;p

Actually, David’s day might be more. By law, he has to go to school for four hours a day.

ok, I am so bummed. I finally got potential seating tickets in my email for AI, and it was for Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. I got the same email also, but I checked it too late. For me, airfare is very cheap (my daughter works for one of the major airlines)…however I have to go standby.

It’s probably better to see if I could get tickets for later this year. I just checked standby seats…and there’s no guarantee I’d be able to fly on Tuesday or Wednesday.

  • MN Sue

Thanks, purplesmile, for the vid. Wasn’t it interesting how Jason was the only one who related his CD title to *gasp* his music. Yup, there are wheels turning in that brain of his.

  • sciencefan

Sciencefan – I thought they were pulling numbers, not songsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

I don’t understand the question. They drew a number that told them what order they were in for getting the song those chose.

Garrett said (back in Top 24 week, I think) each contestant chose 3 songs off the list of 50 songs, but by the time the pecking order got to him, the 3 songs he had chosen had already been taken by others who were higher up in the pecking order, or perhaps he kept losing the hat/number drawing.

In the case mentioned by David H. David said more than one contestant chose “Let It Be” so they each were assigned a number, corresponding numbers were put in a hat, and the person who’s number was chosen got first choice. The person or people who’s name/s were not chosen first have to pick something else.

I’m still trying to figure out the super-hype surrounding Season 7–things seem a bit disjointed at times. Even the inane banter between the judges and Ryan has reached a new level of weirdness!! Good luck to all of the contestants. I am sure that they will all have bright futures.
