VEGAS-SET ROUNDS SPLIT GUYS AND GIRLS INTO GROUPS OF 10; JUDGES ELIMINATE FIVE  SEMIFINALISTS EACH NIGHT

Top 20 Announced Thursday, February 28

The AMERICAN IDOL auditions came to a conclusion tonight as the judges’ semifinalists picks were revealed. After intense deliberations, Mariah, Randy, Nicki and Keith have chosen the Top 40 contestants, who will now head to Las Vegas to perform on the stage of Cirque du Soleil’s Beatles LOVE Theatre at The Mirage.

The Vegas move is a new twist in the competition, during which the Top 40 once again will be split by gender. Each night, the judges will be faced with the tough decision of choosing which five will stay and which five will be sent home. I’m kinda sick of the non-voting rounds, can we vote already?! :P

For all their pimping of the girls, I still prefer the guys this season. So far, Angela, Kree, and Janelle, my favorite 3 girls, don’t have that “X factor” I’ve liked in…. say, Scotty McCreery, James Durbin, Haley Reinhart, Jessica Sanchez, and Crystal Bowersox.

Only one 15 year old. Interesting.

GO Turbanator!!! Let’s see if Keyser, Glover and Shaw can use that screen time they got last year. I don’t remember Janelle at all. But she was definitely in the S11 bunch. Melinda got screen time in S10 with Thia and the VOCAL COACH FROM HELL!. If these faces make it they have a head start.

  • Tom22

Thank god we won’t have any(edit..darn, i saw a 15 year old) 16 year olds singing about sexual relations that they’ve never had (or barely had but shouldn’t have) –  There are so few songs that don’t allude to a passionate relationship it just doesn’t work for the under 18 year olds most of the time

I’d LIKE to, but non-Americans have been scorned on accessing anything for weeks: http://community.americanidol.com/t5/Rules-FAQ-Announcements/International-Fans/m-p/14226336#M2215

And suddenly people who are easily excited are thinking twice about Nicki. At least one mistake this show is fixing ;)

  • dabney c

I’m stunned that the AI site is now only accessible to people in the U.S.  After 12 seasons, NOW they decide to deny access to Canadians and the rest of the world? Wow, what is the reason for this?

  • sdmama

Some of the people in the list, I do not think I have seen them perform at all. I hope for top 40, we get to see EVERYBODY at least once. At this point, even if the person does not make it to top 10, I am curious who made it this far.

And there is the example of Kris Allen; we never know if somebody is hiding a guitar somewhere.  It will be a shame if we have no footage of the eventual champ performances during semi finals ;)

They can do all the pimping they want, but Josh Holiday will win if he makes the top 24.

  • HKfan

I think the public should be voting from now on. not the judges. The one big difference between Idol and the other singing shows is that the public always have more of a say, now they’re dwindling that down.

  • maymirabella

I Hope Janelle, Candice, Vincent, Kevin, Charlie, Burnell, and Cree make it. I want a truly diverse group from various genres. There are a lot of country singers in semifinals, dont want overload of them or any one style in that top 24. I am worried a girl gas no shot of winning if Josh, Jimmy or Johnny make top 20.

  • maymirabella

Yes I think you are right, him or the southern country guy with guitar, Jimmy.

  • geekygirl

Haven’t been following the rule changes, but what is the age limit now?  I see there are some 29 yo’s in the crowd and a 15 yo.

  • Kirsten

Haven’t been following the rule changes, but what is the age limit now?

You had to have been between the ages of 15 and 28 on June 5, 2012 (born between June 6th, 1983 and June 5th, 1997). The 29 year olds on the list have had birthdays since June. http://media.americanidol.com/season_12_auditions/ai12_rules.pdf

Really? I didn’t even remember him before  his sing-off last night and I thought he came over as a massive cheese-ball. Branson here he comes!

But, then, I never got the appeal of P2 so I’m not claiming I’m good at at picking out the winners.

  • b_james

Wow, we really don’t know half of these people, do we?  FODDER ALERT!

  • LeahKittyS

What do you mean? With the exceptions of Adriana Latonio, Amber Holcomb, David Willis, and Kevin Harris, we have heard every one of these people sing at least once. (Jenny Beth Willis was in one of the “Sin Wagon” groups.)

  • Shante

Every time someone uses the word fodder I think, what an idiot. Do you even know what fodder means?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_S3ZGXZCUE2YYOS7QV6QSTKM4SA buffynut2001

Geez! So many people I have never seen!

  • standtotheright

I’m relieved that won’t have any(edit..darn, i saw a 15 year old) 16 year olds singing about sexual relations that they’ve never had (or barely had but shouldn’t have) – There are so few songs that don’t allude to a passionate relationship it just doesn’t work for the under 18 year olds most of the time.

I looked up her footage (not really tuning in yet) and she had a nice but not earthshattering delivery, so maybe she won’t make it through. Then the youngest will be 17 at worst, with a lot of 20+ contestants. Ideally they’d all be over 18, as I 100 percent agree on the squick involved with passionate love songs and younger contestants, but this is certainly not the worst it’s ever been.

  • blackberryharvest

There are actually some good people in that group that we haven’t seen yet(or much of)

Protecting copyright on their precious photos from being Photoshopped into cutesy graphics, mayhaps? Which is backward, because icons and such puts frequently ignorant people in the know and can pique curiosity.
Leading to interest. Watching. Further word-of-mouth. And revenue.
DO YOU NO LONGER WANT FANS, AI?

  • Kirsten

Do you even know what fodder means

In this context, they are using the term “cannon fodder” (cannon food). It means poorly trained and equipped troops that are used in wave attacks against often better equipped, trained or positioned troops. It is a tactic that often results in horrific losses, but the plan is that some of the swarm might get through. Think of Gallipoli (although some of those troops were highly trained, the ANZAC troops were put in impossible situations).

Anyway, the term is a little dramatic in this situation, but they mean contestants that are given little chance to win by the producers and are intended to be sacrificial lambs who are eliminated early to give other contestants time to grow. Sometimes, one of them succeeds in reaching their goal much to the surprise to the producers.
