American Idol 12 Top 4 Spoilers! I am posting them below.  The “One Hit Wonder” picks are totally confusing me.  In what universe are Destiny’s Child and Donna Summer One Hit Wonders?  “Cry Me a River” is hardly an obscure song. And a ton of people have covered it.

Candice Glover’s choices are great. I can’t wait to hear her take on the Drake song.

Is Angie Miller REALLY singing Jesse J for the third time? And repeating a song she sang in Hollywood? She’s playing it safe.

Amber Holcomb covering MacArthur’s park? She’ll do the disco version, but still. It’s a terrible song. Oh. And Celine Dion. WHYYYY?

UPDATED WITH PERFORMANCE ORDER

NOT sure which theme is first, or where the duets fit in the set list.

Personal Choice:

Amber Holcomb - “Power of Love” by Celine Dion
Candice Glover – Find Your Love by Drake
Kree Harrison -  “It Hurt So Bad” by Susan Tedeschi
Angie Miller – “Who You Are” by Jesse J

One Hit Wonders:

Amber Holcomb - MacArthur Park by Richard Harris/Donna Summer
Candice Glover – “Emotion” by Samantha Sang/Destiny’s Child
Kree Harrison - “Whiter Shade of Pale” by Procol Harem
Angie Miller – “Cry Me A River” by Julie London

Amber Holcomb and Kree Harrison – “Rumor Has It” by Adele (Duo)
Angela Miller and Candice Glover – “Stay” by Rihanna (Duo)

looking for the Stay duet but so disappointed in Amber picking that old song really

  • http://twitter.com/PattiHum Pat H

STAY!! They got a new song cleared!!

Although, this song as a duet with two ladies doesn’t sound right, to me, for the song.

  • jms

Stay was sung by Elijah Liu during the Top 40 round.

  • Wfish88

*Sigh*. Amber your song choices are TERRIBLE. Judges boast how ‘current’ you are, yet you’ve done ballods every week.

  • http://twitter.com/PattiHum Pat H

Oh yes! I forgot! He did a decent job, too!

  • Wfish88

The only ‘current’ male singer in semi finals/finals

  • jms

I really liked Jillian Jensen’s rendition of Who You Are, and she was supposed to release a full version that never came out. Hopefully Angela’s studio recording and her performance are close to what she did on YouTube. I like the lyrics, but the original arrangement by Jessie J is kind of bleh and her voice is really shouty and annoying, so I hope Angela can convey those lyrics well.

Candice’s personal choice is one of my favorite Drake songs and one of the few by Drake that I can picture someone actually doing on American Idol, so I hope she nails it.

Kree has to choose a really good song, too.

  • http://twitter.com/nsideguy25 Chris

Oh angie and candice duet is perfect. It could be very good!

  • jms

Burnell had potential, and JDA could have been, well, “interesting”. But, no.

  • http://twitter.com/dakiddesigns MrExtroidinary™

Amber has NO imagination…she’s clearly keeping her choices limited to the ‘pre-cleared’ songs list. She’ll be singing for the save Thursday night.

  • b_james

Well, looks like they’re going to use the save on Amber this week.

Those duets look like they’ll be fierce though.

  • http://twitter.com/dakiddesigns MrExtroidinary™

    Predicted Performance Order:
    Angie>Amber>Candice>Kree

  • Madilo

why didn’t Amber chose Stay ? she’s terrible at picking songs

  • http://twitter.com/noanaaman Noa Na’aman

Excuse me?! I love all the songs I sang! Who are you again?! EXACTLY. –Amber…

  • jms

Is the save really still there this week? I think saving Amber would be a huge waste because she’ll just be eliminated next week.

I do understand Idol does need to get another week on the schedule somehow, though.

  • lotrisneat

    MacArthur Park?!? Seriously?!?

Love Angie’s choices. And Candice’s choices don’t really matter. She could sing The Campfire Song by Spongebob Squarepants and turn it into a “moment”.

  • http://twitter.com/happylittlefish Amy Beth

Why are Kree’s song choices on double secret probation?

  • jms

Candice is a SpongeBob fan, but if she were to sing a song from there I’d choose that Sweet Victory song :P.

…TBH, while Candice is certainly my favorite contestant this season, I don’t think I’d exaggerate that much about her skill lol.

  • http://www.facebook.com/frapalo Francisco Rapalo

Candice is very smart. She is going to KILL Emotion

  • Nadine_Bitch

I’ve been saying this same line from top 6 week but I was wrong in EVERY prediction I made until I get exhausted. lol And I like Amber. But let me try another one: A Candice- Amber finale.

  • http://twitter.com/vortexpanel vortexpanel

I’m amazed you all think Amber’s choices are bad. Celine Dion and Donna Summer are about as safe as you can get on this show. Both songs have huge emotional moments that will allow her to connect with the audience. Candice, by contrast, is performing songs that 90% of the Idol audience will be unfamiliar with. Nobody over 30 has any idea who “Drake” is. She is leading herself straight into a trap.

  • http://twitter.com/bluinjewin Landon Cox

They don’t have a save any more, but according to Slezak/FOX they have a “contingency plan”

No, I’m just not a huge fan of pop music (yet I’m here watching Idol).

  • jms

I totally have the opposite mindset.

  • vd88

    LMAO

  • http://www.etsy.com/shop/AdorablyHooked Gwen

I just came to see what Candice is singing so that I can watch the vids later. YES!

  • http://www.facebook.com/frapalo Francisco Rapalo

Jessie j is one of the greatest female singers of our generations

  • http://twitter.com/nsideguy25 Chris

It depends who connects with what. Whoever sells it best will get votes.

  • Patrick Tang

    Just did a quick calculation:

Amber’s song choices since LV round have an average age of 36 years old. If we take out The Beatles and The Burt Bacharach songs (the only themes that we’re really decade-limited), the average age of her song choices is still 34 years old.

    In comparison:
Angie: average age of 20 years
Without Beatles and BB: 14 years

Yeah, it’s safe to say Amber really doesn’t know how to pick current songs.

  • http://twitter.com/vortexpanel vortexpanel

Because it’s an awful song by an awful singer. Amber’s voice comes alive when she takes on songs with intricate melodies, i.e. My Funny Valentine, What Are You Doing, She’s Leaving Home, etc. Her song choices show that she understands her instrument better than most contestants.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

I’m just stunned at Amber. Wow. I need to process that and get back to ya’ll. SMH.

    I like those duets!

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

    You win! LOL!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=501482875 Kesia Monteith

    I like Jessie J…a lot…but that’s a huge(!) overstatement.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Funniest comment I’ve read in a long time! lmao!

  • fuzzywuzzy

“Amber Holcomb – “Power of Love” by Celine Dion
Amber Holcomb – MacArthur Park by Richard Harris/Donna Summer”

Yep. Amber’s going home this week.

  • dabney c

That’s what I thought as soon as I saw these picks. Even if she sings them flawlessly, they’re still super dated. OMG, why, Amber?

  • jtgraffix

Kree, PLEASE perform your original song….PLEASE

  • http://twitter.com/Lutrell4 Ira

So, are you saying that Amber should have the biggest surge in voting Wednesday night, and Candice will find herself in the bottom?

  • zzatrms

American Idol 12 Top 4 Spoilers! I am posting them below.

I guessed on which song belonged where.

These may not be the correct choices …. tho J is usually pretty accurate when she guesses.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Li-Wright/100001622678180 Li Wright

Is this a 2 hour show again?

  • zzatrms

can’t edit J should be MJ

  • http://twitter.com/Lutrell4 Ira

Still think it will be a Candice/ Angie finale. They are the two most aggressive, creative and exciting performers left. They both seem to have a sense of who their base is, and how to attract new voters every week.

  • Tess

Geesh, I’m well over (35 yrs over to be exact) 30 and I know who Drake is!

  • Madilo

but i think Amber can have her moment with that Celine song, i hope she does a terrific job with it so that she can be safe
i don’t want her to go home

  • http://twitter.com/RonnieDRocks Ronnie D

Amber needs to really hit it out of the park or it could turn into a snooze fest singing two ballads. Donna Summer pretty much owns that song, as well as Celine. Even though people rag on Celine Dion, she is one hell of a singer! The Rumor Has It duet should be good if Kree can step out of wooden like stage demeanor.

  • LeoCS

Why Kree’s songs are always announced later? Have anyone noticed?

  • Patrick Tang

Maybe she is the Hungry Games girl; no one is allowed to watch her rehearse.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

I see where you are coming from, but the thing is Amber has been picking these kinds of songs all along and has rode the bottom because of it. If she’s going to do old, she needs to do VERY old, like an actual American Songbook type song like My Funny Valentine or the song she sang last week, not things that are simply dated. She needs to surprise people, knock socks off. But on the upside the Donna Summer song can be updated I guess.

  • Nadine_Bitch

I you tube the song Mac Arthur’s park because I don’t know the song and I saw that Carrie Underwood had sang it on her season too.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyuGKR15_KA
Never watched season 4 but comparing The Carrie then and Janelle, hands down Janelle wins for being charismatic and the undeniably stage presence. But doesn’t matter anyway, we see how Carrie transformed from ‘that’ to the supahstah Carrie.

  • http://twitter.com/hovIand Vetle Hovland

Amber’s song choices… I mean… UGH. I thought we had a legitimate chance to get a 60+ week on WNTS, but not with songs like MacArthur Park… She could do well with Power Of Love. Hollie did pretty well with it. But I mean, what the hell. On the other end of the spectrum. Candice’s choices. I’m excited. Props to her and Angie for picking something fresh. It needs to be said that Angie has picked the most songs that has never been done on idol before this season, and I really applaud that. Kinda cheating with the “Cry Me A River” one though? I know, Julie London, but Michael Bublé’s version is pretty huge, I think. Oh well, I don’t know, I like the song so I don’t really care.

  • taylor

Amber’s choices are TERRIBLE! She would have been smart to pick a song like Angie’s OHW choice. The judges are going to continue to push, push, push her at us this week, but she has to help them out some here.

Candice and Angie are playing the game, making smart choices and peaking at the right time. Jimmy and Co. are wanting Amber and Kree in the final two and it’s looking like the opposite may happen. lol

  • Nadine_Bitch

You might be right and honestly the ONLY thing that would surprise me is when these two(Candice&Angie) will be eliminated these next two weeks.

  • Patrick Tang

I’d rather have someone sing 4 songs from a current Billboard artist, than someone singing songs from someone my grandfather would consider a current Billboard artist.

  • twodollars

That list of song choices is exactly why Idol’s ratings are falling. Celine Dion, MacArthur Park. Ugh.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=501482875 Kesia Monteith

I kinda hope the opposite does happen. I like Kree, and she and Candice would be a powerhouse finale. But I think Angie wants it more than anybody else, and always seem eager to please. These two seem like they really want to play the game, so it will be fascinating to watch as to who can play the game better. I wish Janelle was still in the running to throw a monkey wrench into the game. I kind of wish the original producer’s plan of a Janelle, Candice and Angie final three was still in play. That top three sounds somewhat more exciting. Oh well, still…Go Kree! LOL

  • dawnage01

Candiiiiiice! Omg..I’m always excited to see what she’s going to do every single freakin’ week. I sense another “moment” for Wed! :D

  • Face

she clearly still thinks its season 2… when all you needed to do was sing a big ballad well to progress… IMO she is just like Jessica Sanchez last season… young girl with potential who picks dull ad boring and safe power ballads to play the game… and loses any self of musical identity…

  • http://twitter.com/noanaaman Noa Na’aman

thanks everyone! i’ll literally be here all week (otherwise i’d have to work!). i’d also like to give a shout-out to the guy who made the hilarious Arrested Development reference in a comment yesterday. 24 hours later- i’m still giggling to myself ;).

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matteo-Rodrigo/1340430528 Matteo Rodrigo

You shouldnt allow a Donna Summer as a one hit wonder? That should be nixed- even if youre trying to sway the votes. Donna Summer is a legend and often sang Macarthur along with other other hits…Did you see her VH1 live special? Shes such a big diva she performed on an Idol finale with the girls singing a montage of her hits…She aint no one hit wonder – thats reserved for people like Milli Vanilli and even they had more than 1 hit. Same goes with Destinys Child – Are you kidding me? They dominated for years and years. This must be wrong or other Uncle Nigel needs to do some splainin

  • http://twitter.com/vortexpanel vortexpanel

Not really. She rode the bottom after singing an uptempo Beyonce song and a Beatles ballad nobody ever heard of. Power ballads have been proven winners for Amber.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matteo-Rodrigo/1340430528 Matteo Rodrigo

I really was expecting a Candice v Kree finale…If Amber or Angie gets in there, Ill be disappointed. I honestly dont think Amber is that great- shes pretty, has great legs, but I dont see that great talent – but then again talent isnt what this show is about – or at least the music biz today (see Idology)….But Kree was in the B2 so thats something to worry about. Sounds like this weeks vote totals will be added to next weeks. WOW a NEW TWIST (except DWTS has used it for years)

  • vdawg

Amber, do you have Lazaro picking songs for you?

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

What I love about that song choice is it’s known by 2 generations – the Bee Gees version and the Destiny’s Child version, and it’s not a belt-y type song so it will keep her out of “stale R&B diva” labels. Plus it’s pretty, emotional, and not overdone on the show.

  • Face

LOL they are really playing with the 1HW theme aren’t they…
Amber’s choices would’ve sucked in season 3 or 4… in season 12 they are just dire…
Angie’s Jessie J choice is no surprise… Cry me a river is unusual choice for her… don’t think she has the pipes or finesse for it…
why is it that we never know Kree’s choices till the last minute?… does it imply she changes frequently or only decides late on?…
Candice’s choices are (again) the best of the bunch…
interesting duet pairings… and by far the better (i.e. more modern) choices… be interesting to see how Angie holds up against Candice…

  • Montavilla

I want Amber to sing MacArthur Park like this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tatoplO2A70

  • http://twitter.com/noanaaman Noa Na’aman

i’m hearing that Kree is granting me wishes and covering Susan Tedeschi again. i’m hoping it’s Hurts So Bad because that song can really make an impact and her version is great. (although Elise also covers that and i must say- original > Elise > Kree). anyway- yay Kree. you’ll kill it.

  • EB

Bleh! Can Candice win already please? Her choices are great and she will kill both of them.

I don’t want to make assumptions yet regarding Kree but her song choices last week were not very good which makes me worry.

Amber… I don’t know which song is worse! Power of Love I might have understood being stuck with for divas week, but that’s her personal choice? Further proof she is not as current as they unsuccessfully try to make us believe. And she could have chosen something way better for one-hit wonder with cheesy goodness but not just plain dreadfulness… LOL, MacArthur Park… goodness gracious. These were her top choices? Girl is out of touch, I’m afraid.

And I’m not excited for Angie either. Her choices suck too… boring and predictable. Her voice just doesn’t excite me, either. It never has, for some reason. I’d be happy with either her or Amber leaving. Watch them get standing ovations though. *sigh*

  • blackberryharvest

Newer songs have no impact on the ratings. See The X Factor. Also, Rihanna, Drake, Jessie J, and Adele are all newer artists that will be features.

I think it should be called Candify…….

I don’t remember her doing a bunch of done to death songs though …

  • steve2013

wouldnt say Candice Or Angie are playing it smart. Angie is playing it very very safe & imo to safe she has already performed who you are in hollywood & not really a fan of candices songs either imo find your love by drake isnt a good song but emotion could be a moment.

Ambers are horrible aswell . We will have to wait & see what kree’s are

  • http://twitter.com/CanadianLady2 CanadianLady

Assuming they are Amber’s choices. As in, how long was her list? But I have liked much of what she’d done until now. Maybe she can surprise us.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Laura-Corn/100001659368831 Laura Corn

Candice obviouslythe one to beat but I get the feeling she won’t be this years Idol.

  • steve2013

    what original song???

  • http://twitter.com/noanaaman Noa Na’aman

at least Jessica made some cool choices (Stuttering, Sweet Dreams)

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

She also didn’t rank top 3 when she sang a Kelly power ballad in the pimp spot. She came in 5th behind LAZARO. LOL. The only one that worked for her was that Heart song IMO. Pat of me thinks it was the element of surprise since no one expected her to do well rock week. But I guess we’ll see! Anything can happen.

  • Larc

Probably not because she’s the best singer this season. Idol voters have a way of turning thumbs down on the best. Maybe the Tall Poppy Syndrome at work?

  • http://twitter.com/noanaaman Noa Na’aman

and i’m under 30 and don’t know who he is!

  • steve2013

honestly dont think find your love is that great of a choice. Its a horrible song but emotion could be good

  • steve2013

Honestly i think she is this years melinda & will finish 3rd hope im wrong though as really wanting a Candice Vs Kree final

  • Incipit

So amusing – couple of whiles back, someone was talking about the song “Cry Me A River”, and I thought they meant this Arthur Hamilton song that had been kicking around since the ’20′s and finally got used in 1953… Come to find out, Justin Timberlake wrote a different song with the same title in 2002 – who knew? Well, obviously, people who listened to Justin Timberlake knew – but that wouldn’t be me.

So every time I saw the title after that, I figured it was that very different R&B “Song With The Same Name” as the classic one – and paid no attention.

Except, this time it turns out to be the classic “original song with that name”. Confused yet? Heh.

So – turn the Wayback Machine dial to1962. The very first time I ever heard Barbra Streisand sing – it was this song, on The Tonight Show, w/Johnny Carson – and she did what we used to applaud Idol contestants for doing – she took this song and twisted the timing, the phrasing, jazzed it up even more – gave it attitude, swagger and spit and vinegar – and brought it very, very far from the sad torch song it started life as – when Julie london sang it in ’55…without changing the melody at all, or altering one word of the song. I never forgot that, It was a revelation to my young self, what a talented artist could do. (BTW, Carson’s archival tapes were destroyed – but bootleg tapes exist.)

I haven’t begun to listen to all the versions done by famous artists – I hope Angela hasn’t either – the list of comparisons could be intimidating to anyone who knows who they are. Better not to, since it seems she didn’t know to start with. Who wants to be compared to Ella Fitzgerald, Shirley Bassey, Diana Krall, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Sammy Davis, Etta James, Nina Simone, Dinah Washington, and Barbra Streisand, among others, – all at one time!! Michael Buble’ and Susan Boyle are small potatoes compared to that list.

And I wonder if using Julie London’s name means she will also follow her arrangement? Because, I gotta say – The Julie London version will be a very nice take on a lovely, respected Jazz standard – even if it was a One Hit for Ms London…something I would expect Amber or Candice to chose – not Angela. (And – If I thought she pulled this out her own research, instead of off the Producers list – I would be saying Kudos.)

But the scornful, scathing Streisand version could bring down the house, if Angela could pull it off – and if TPTB are as elastic in their definitions of One Hit Wonder as they seem to be. If she goes there – and TPTB let her – things could get interesting from there. I’ll recognize it from the first note – and Barbra’s explosive delivery. Unmistakable.

    Somehow, I think she won’t.

  • steve2013

Safe at this point is a big no no & i didnt no who drake was had to google it listen to the song & i dont no why people are excited by it. IMO its a horrible song

  • hayes

Major props to Candice for singing Drake on Idol. That’s something I never thought I’d ever see.

  • http://twitter.com/HighTensions Jake W.

I LOVE Angie’s personal choice and the Candice duet song choice. I have high hopes for both of those performances. However, I’m not excited about her “One Hit Wonder” song choice. Blah! I also love that Candice is doing a Drake song. Amber needs to start packing her bags with her song choices.

  • http://twitter.com/HighTensions Jake W.

    Amen!

  • Maya100

I hope they change the theme name because the artists they’ve picked are very far from “one hit wonders.” It’s insulting to them and also makes the producers and contestants look ignorant.

  • http://twitter.com/HighTensions Jake W.

I don’t think Amber will be able to do Celine Dion justice. Hollie at least had the pipes for it. Amber doesn’t quite got them IMO.

  • mmb

MacArthur Park was first recorded by Richard Harris, the actor — who was indeed a one hit wonder. His version was a hit. Donna Summer recorded a cover years later. That was also hit. No one would ever claim that Donna Summer was a one hit wonder lol

According to WNTS, only 5 out of 30 Celine performances on the show have led to eliminations. Jasmine is the ONLY top 10 contestant to be eliminated in 12 seasons. Kelly Clarkson covered Celine on both top 4 and top 3 weeks. This idea that Celine is the kiss of death just isn’t supported by the facts. Going uptempo and “current” is a good way to get voted off the show.

  • Lovesyesha

I’m getting a little annoyed by the obvious disdain for Angie here. Say what you want about her voice, but the girl seems to work extremely hard. Also, so what if she is singing a song she sang in Hollywood? Lots of contestants have done that before and she only sang like 20 seconds of it. Klocke sang somewhere over the rainbow at least 3 times throughout the show and it was still fantastic each time. Also, Cry me a River and Macarthur’s Park (Donna Summer’s version) are obviously very well known, but the point, I believe is that for the original artists (Julie London and Richard Harris respectively) they were one hit wonders. They were both artists only top 10 hits in the US (Cry me a river reached no.9 and Macarthur’s Park no.2), so for me they do seem to fall into the vein of one hit wonders.

I actually happen to think Angie’s choices are fantastic and could result in this being an amazing week for her. I also love Candice’s choices. Looking forward to a good show.

  • Incipit

Good question. Wonder what the definition is that Idol is using.

Ms London has 36 albums in her discography…and six charted songs. Supposed to be only one Hit? OK.

  • Lovesyesha

Also forgot to add that “Emotion” was Samantha Sang’s only hit and reached number 2.

  • http://twitter.com/JB_Kaneohe JB_Kaneohe

    I agree totally.

  • http://twitter.com/HighTensions Jake W.

    I completely agree!

  • http://twitter.com/cindydesigns Cindy Moniz

I don’t think that Angie is completely playing it safe, considering the judges just want her to sit at the piano (or so it seems). Hollywood week was still awhile ago. It’ll be nice to see it on the full stage. I’m not sure if the average idol watcher will even remember she sang it in Hollywood because I, for sure, don’t remember. haha. :)

  • EB

    “emotion could be good”

Right, so, it is a great choice to me. I’ve been wanting someone to tackle Drake on Idol for awhile and do something interesting with his songs. She can bring feeling and soul to it and I can’t wait to hear what she will do with it given her talent and major skills lately at rearranging songs. It’s also current, which is really smart of her.

That is what I want to see. Not The Power of Love by Celine, for example, that is sung exactly as you would expect it to be and on a crucial week like top 4 week.

  • EB

I have personally had my fill of her… her voice isn’t to my liking as Candice and Kree who I love, and she is way overhyped by the judges. I don’t have any problem writing her off for myself… I’m just not a fan.

  • mjsbigblog

No. I suspect it has something to do with who this source is. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are connected to Kree and have promised not to spill her song choices right away.

Or it’s someone who knows the other girls better.

I’m putting my money down right now on the source being a friend or relative of one of the finalists, and I bet the finalist has no idea.

  • http://twitter.com/vortexpanel vortexpanel

lmao. Hollie does *not* have the pipes for Celine. Amber does.

  • http://twitter.com/dam744 Damien Roberts

I think the Jessie J song will be good, but “Cry Me a River” doesn’t really seem to be her thing. I imagine Kree will kill her personal pick, she probably knows herself better than any of the artists know themselves.

  • http://twitter.com/sam12418 Sue C.

Kree really needs to do a recognizable song. Susan Tedeschi is great, but not mainstream enough. I’m nervous for her!

  • http://twitter.com/vortexpanel vortexpanel

I’d rule out Julie London as a one-hit wonder based on her having four top-20 albums in the 1950s.

Three of her six “charted songs,” though, charted below #100, which I wouldn’t count (otherwise, nobody is a one-hit wonder unless they also only released one song), one was top-10 in South Africa (not the U.S.), and one was top-15 on Easy Listening (dubious whether I’d call that a hit, since EL in 1969 was less current than AC today). So CMaR really is her only major hit as a single.

Nonetheless, Idol’s definition of “one-hit wonder” makes zero sense. Donna Summer, just because it’s a cover of a song debuted by somebody else? Destiny’s Child, ditto? Sometimes I’m pretty sure that Lythgoe seriously does consider his audience to be, in his favorite word, “morons.”

  • http://twitter.com/vortexpanel vortexpanel

Fifth place was pretty good considering she was completely unknown before her top 40 performance. She also didn’t have any pathetic sob stories like Kree, Lazaro, etc.

  • Jonathan52

Pretty much everyone is trashing Amber right now for her song choices, but everyone was doing the same with her choice of Barbra Streisand last week, and it turned out to be in my opinion the best performance of the night, come on! Give her a break! :P

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=754136041 Jason Gorny

I agree with the disdain about Angie. I’m looking forward to Who You Are again.

  • jtgraffix

You Would’ve Wanted it That Way. But I’m happy with her Susan Tedeschi choice

  • maymirabella

me too Steve. I so want a Kree/Candice finale but I have this bad feeling Angie will be there instead of Candice. I get this sinking feeling Candice will get third place like Joshua did last year. But then again, Candice and Kree have been the most consistent in their performance whereas last year, Jessica became one of the most consistent even though Joshua wowed the judges and audiences each week, so did Jessica.

I hope Candice makes the Finale but I am worried she will finish in 3rd place, ie as Angie improves and gets more votes, it could hurt either Candice or Kree..I fear.

  • girlygirl

Wow…they totally cheated on the “One Hit Wonder” stuff didn’t they? I’m very disappointed by the contestants and TPTB.

And yuck to yet another Celine Dion song by Amber. Not thrilled by Angie’s choice either — she’s already covered Jessie J. Of course, to be fair, Kree’s already covered Susan Tedeschi, as well. Not very much imagination being shown here, except by Candice.

  • maymirabella

Yes there have been a couple of years where the most consistent and strongest singer wins but not the majority of years..so that is true. I am thinking Angie is going to win , if not Angie, then Kree.

As Angie seems to be improving in terms of judges; comment and last week, she and Candice were in the top 2 spots but Kree has been in the top 2 slots in weeks before where it was announced. So I think top 2 is a Toss up,.,.it could be any combo of Angie, Kree, Candice, I just want Candice in Finale even if she does not win. I worry about Candice not making Finale so top 3 week is crucial for her.. She has to be really top notch to beat our Angie for Finale spot at this point.

  • http://twitter.com/Prkan_708 Marin Kuhari?

Well – Natural Woman, I Can’t Get No (Satisfaction), I Heard It Through the Grapevine and, even though I absolutely adored that performance, I have to put I Who Have Nothing in that category as well.

I know some of these songs may not have been her first choice because the contestants were often confined to theme weeks with limited number of songs, but still…

Don’t get me wrong, Candice is my absolute favorite this year. I’m simply stating that this is now the third week in a row her song choices have completely blown my mind (maybe w/ the exception of When You Believe), after several weeks of somewhat boring choices. :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1638805698 Jason Scott

I was a fan of Carrie’s VOICE on the show, not so much her stage presence…but she’s sure turned that around like whoaaaaa. Kree actually reminds me a lot of how Carrie was on the show.

  • maymirabella

Based on Amber’s appearances in the bottom 2 or 3, I think it is more likely Angie could be a threat to a Kree./Candice finale than Amber would be..I thiink. I think it is possible Candice or Kree ends up third, but I hope not. But I can see Angie making the Finale at this point. I just so want Candice and Kree Finale even though I will admit, Angie has had some good performances but not as consistent as Kree and Candice.

  • maymirabella

Agreed, TV Guide has an excellent article about why Idol ratings are falling. They give several reasons, none of which have to do with song choices or contestants in top 10. They say it has to do with the age of the show, all shows that go this long often have sagging ratings from time to time, more singing competitions out there burning out viewers getting bored with them, the Judges are more interesting and ilikeable on the Voice than Idol. Check out TV Guide or TVGuide.com for the article, it is quite good and interesting.

  • http://twitter.com/hovIand Vetle Hovland

I’m not sure. I prefer Hollie as a singer, and I’m never worried at all when Hollie does those belty high notes (check out Bleeding Love or All the Man That I Need for example). Amber sometimes go slightly off-pitch, but I think she will be able to do the song, but I’m not sure if it’ll make an impact. Better to have low expectations I guess.

  • maymirabella

Really> You think the powers that be want Kree and Amber in Finale? I was getting the feeling they wanted Kree and Candice or Kree and Angie..but you may be right, they like Amber.

  • Face

well its JMO but one or two good choices don’t make up for the other dozen or so choices…

  • maymirabella

I see that too with Angie. She really really wants it , very eager to please and plays the cameras well. But I want Kree and Candice as they have the most consistent where Angie had some not so good song choices and a few off performances, the other 2 have been consistently good, not always great, but pretty close most weeks. But I do think Angie makes Finale, I think she is gaining the praise of the judges more and more votes too..she could edge out Kree or Candice for Finale. I can see Angie winning it all actually. She was an early frontrunner with a ton of Facebook and Twitter followers.

  • maymirabella

Angie could be the WGWP winner..white girl with piano. LOL.

  • jcabby

Wow what a song choice by Candice! Drake! Good job by her!

  • http://twitter.com/hovIand Vetle Hovland

I get what he’s saying with the done to death songs thing, but they didn’t exactly have a lot of options with those theme weeks. :P

  • maymirabella

I have to agree with vortex, Amber has the pipes for that song but it is more can she pull it off without boring us and will it sound fresh and as well as good?

  • maymirabella

If Amber changes it slightly and it comes across as Fresh and she does a fabulous job with it, she may be OK. Her problem is whatever she does, she has ended up in the bottom a bunch, she might not have the votes no matter what she does to make it much further. As I think Kree voters will rally to vote for her a lot because she was in bottom this past week. That means Amber would need more votes to keep from being booted. Amber fans will have to really rally or I think she is out based on how I think Kree fans will vote extra hard this week. And Angie seems to be gaining votes and fans as time goes on and judges praise her more and she sits at the piano..Angie and Piano equals a lot of votes.

  • http://twitter.com/vortexpanel vortexpanel

Jumping to conclusions in the song spoiler thread is like a tradition around here. I remember how they praised Casey Abrams for choosing “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” lmao.

  • taylor

Yes, I do. They don’t see Candice as “marketable”. They prefer Amber in the black girl role, because they think she can be another Rihanna/Beyonce type. (Ha, good luck with that!). Kree, being a country girl with deep connections would also be someone they could work with.

Jimmy has told us that much about Amber. There’s a reason she gets a standing O almost every time, including times when her performance is off or middle of the pack.

Like Michael pointed out in Idology, the judges are treating Kree and Amber like the season 10 judges treated Scotty and Lauren. The narrative is all about what their albums will be like or what kind of artists they will be. TPTB are placing those ~hints in viewers’ minds. Watch for it! ;)

  • blackberryharvest

I agree. I feel like the ratings discussion and why they are falling is beating a dead horse. Every week in the ratings threads its the same thing. That is why I don’t even bother with the ratings threads anymore lol.

  • taylor

I wasn’t a big Hollie fan, but she most definitely had the pipes and range for a Celine Dion song! Amber has a limited range and she doesn’t have the power that Hollie had.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=501482875 Kesia Monteith

Yeah, but Kree always seemed more interesting in how genre bending she is. Kree can be boring, but I never found her bland, and that was how I felt about Carrie…at the time.

BUT Carrie has grown leap and bounds and has become an impressive talent, so no hate to Carrie from me. She is doing her thang just fine. ;)

  • http://twitter.com/JB_Kaneohe JB_Kaneohe

How many “safe power ballads” did Jessica actually pick for herself that wasn’t forced by the dated themes or picked by someone else? I don’t think many. Almost every high placing female in AI history has sung mostly ballads.

  • http://twitter.com/CanadianLady2 CanadianLady

I’m a Candice fan, but neither Angie nor Kree has caught my interest. And I’m mostly into country. But while I think Kree has a beautiful voice, she has yet to grab my attention. I see her as more of a Kelly Clarkson type singer than a country singer. I loved what Amber did to “My Funny Valentine” and Barbra’s song last week.

  • abbysee

I would concede Grapevine, but I’ve watched every season and Satisfaction, and I Who Have Nothing do not apply. Not sure about Natural Woman either. For the record Candice is the only one this year who hasn’t bored me.

  • db987

The distain is always pointed at some poor young girl who in the opinion of the blogs masses crosses some line of sweet/geniune to agressive/phony. Whatever, Angie has a wonderful voice has not always had wonderful performances which I think can be said for all of them at this point.

  • jms

But it’s annoying when she does it ALL THE DAMN TIME. At some point, the terrible song choices begin to override the performance itself.

I can see why Amber and Lazaro connected, both of them are absolutely terrible at choosing songs. It’s a shame, because Amber does have a great voice and she just wastes it on completely uninteresting songs.

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

    Here’s the deal with Holcomb’s strategy…

–She’s positioning herself on the show as the delectable diva of older ballads, which she does indeed interpret well, but which are seeking the approval of an older, non-radio-listening voter.

–Iovine clearly sees her as “marketable” as a contemporary pop star, aimed at teens and 20-somethings, which will mean singing up-tempo songs that will get CHR airplay.

There’s a mismatch here. Now, to be fair, this is the same strategy we saw with Jordin Sparks, David Archuleta, and Jessica Sanchez. In Sparks’ case, she got some strong material on her debut and did well for a while (but Idol was also just one season past its peak ratings then, not where it is now). Archuleta successfully had a pop hit and we don’t know what would have happened later, as he tried to be less teen-idol with his next album and then later recordings are more like what he did on the show. Sanchez… we’re still waiting on radio adds, so maybe it’ll work.

But… as an Idol viewer who buys a lot of music, I don’t like this strategy. I spend the season sitting through songs aimed at my parents or grandparents, hopefully imagining a contemporary pop/R&B album that (maybe) won’t skew too young and frivolous for me (since I’m not 19). I much prefer artists who give me a rough idea of what kind of music they actually intend to sell after the show, so that the future album I’m getting attached to bears some resemblance to the one I’ll have a chance to buy from them.

  • jms

I just heard Cry Me A River for the first time. It’s more of a Kree/Candice song than an Angela song, but she can do well on it probably.

As for Angie doing Jessie J for the third time and doing the same song twice, I really don’t have much issue with it. First of all, both of those performances are long gone from my memory. Second, she sang Who You Are during an a cappella round, so this one with instruments should be different. Third, her YouTube cover is GREAT.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001968836664 Omar Angel Dominguez

Really excited to see what Candice does with that autotuned Drake song. I think she’s gonna kill it! Oh Amber, WHY?! Those choices are horrible.

  • alt28023

Delivery is all that matters to me. I don’t care for 90% of the songs chosen by any of these contestants anyways. Aside from the duos this week (and celine dion/destiny’s child), my first thought would be, “what song is this?”

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1309504183 Laudemhir Jan Maisog Parel

Oh my!!!! I’ve been waiting for Angie to do her own arrangement of Jessie J’s Who You Are!!! That YouTube cover is on FIYAHHH!!!

Because no male contestant has EVER been labeled as such . . . . @.@

  • Connie Stamley

Wishing it was JTs cry me a river. Love Susan T. On Kree. Glad she’s bringing the blues. I see her more blues than country. Hope she makes a little more uptempo than her YT version. FYI Power of love was originally done by Nicollete Larson not Celine dion:)

  • http://twitter.com/jhgebel James G

I’m guessing that Kree is singing “It Hurt So Bad” by Susan Tedeschi here’s a video of her singing it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Khi89iKMSKI

  • MyDailyComment

    gold comment star!

  • elliegrll

Kree should thank Amber for making bad song choices, even though it won’t help either of them build up a fanbase that will support them once the season is over.

Kree’s songs seem like they could be good for her.

  • http://twitter.com/SybilT2 Sybill Trelawney

Even Carrie Underwood could’t sing MacArthur Park. Also, hilariously, after her performance she admitted she had no idea what the song was about.

  • bobo

Maybe the powers put a quota on the number of Beyonce songs Amber could sing and she came up with nothin. But wow. Thats’ a girl begging to go home, and not just for a weekend visit.

Or maybe we’re all being punked.

Kree’s choices are interesting. I’m hoping that she breaks the trend and doesn’t succeed in taking all that is interesting out of those two choices.

  • steve2013

Personally much prefer Kree’s voice so id say the others just dont deserve to win over Kree!

  • http://twitter.com/MoranKTA flog gnaw

Bluesy!Kree this week, get it girl.

  • brenoga

kree can have a moment with hurt so bad, but she HAS to really let go and show the pain behind this song.

i’m really excited about candice. that drake song may give her another moment. it really brings me back some “heartless” memories.

angie is playing it safe indeed. it is actually her fourth time singing jessie j – her audition song (mama knows best), hollywood (who you are), semi finals (nobody knows) and now who you are again. but the judges won’t call her out on it, so it doesn’t really matter. I am really excited about her duet with candice, though – that sounds AWESOME. one of the few rihanna’s songs i love.

Amber is really a lost case. what a waste of talent – she is really a wonderful singer but this BORING song choices are just horrible. and, of course, the judges will love her again this week and I will feel like killing somebody.

  • steve2013

why should kree thank amber for making bad song choices?? Id say amber has made bad song choices all season long & she is still there so song choice cant matter that much

  • Cooper

Kree, you are FAR better than Angie! I hope Angie gets knocked out ASAP! Let’s hope for a Kree/Candice Grand Final!

  • steve2013

Out of the 4 left Kree’s voice is the only one i really really love. I think as soon as kree goes im done with the season. Angie/Candice i like but I dont love there voices like i do with kree’s

Hope kree knocks it out of the park

We don’t know yet, but check this post for more details on all the alternatives: http://www.mjsbigblog.com/american-idol-source-no-more-save-but-there-is-a-contingency-plan-to-fix-schedule-poll.htm

  • elliegrll

Amber reminded me of Jordin at first, but there is just something that is not falling into place like it did with Jordin.

  • NatSasic

To me, Amber’s choices stick out as the only ones being chosen by a producer and not her. Whether that’s because she didn’t know what to do or something else, that’s up for speculation. The others all sound like their own choices.

  • jms

I agree kind of. For some reason, I feel like Amber would be better at picking a song that isn’t boring and suits her. But, if Amber chose the song herself…. Well, might as well call her AmBORE.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100004875903894 Katie Smith

Sad that people here seem to hate on Kree. Whenever she starts singing, people pile up on her and call her boring.

  • matt89

I don’t necessarily think its her voice that’s boring, its the song choices

  • perfectstorm

It’s probably because she is the perceived front runner. The competition is now more about fan base support.

  • Tom

I think Kree chose the best songs by far. Especially “Whiter Shade of Pale” that one could be really great.

  • http://twitter.com/hovIand Vetle Hovland

14/30 were in semis etc. That’s almost half. So 2/16 at the stage of the competition that actually counts (well, counts more). 6/16 were either bottom 2/3 or elimination, which at this stage in the competition is kinda on the edge – especially considering that Kree was just in the bottom 2 (one of the front runners) performing Céline Dion.

But I get what you’re saying. It’s just that you won’t pick up any new fans. It’s not a great way to capitalize on momentum going forward in the competition, unless you do it extraordinarily well. Only 3 songs have reached 5-stars too. At least Amber didn’t pick the worst Céline Dion song, in my opinion. People definitely know it.

  • vd88

Kree’s problem is she never goes full out and I know she’s capable of giving us more. She’s always holding back and I don’t know why, like I want her to go a Candice level and just attack a song.

  • brenoga

don’t het me wrong, I’ve seen it and I think it’s great. But think that she could have chosen anything (maybe an original? don’t know if TPTB would allow it, but it’s fee choice isn’t it? and her best moment this season was You Set Me Free, so I’m not sure they would deny her the chance to do another one).. anyway, at least it’s a good song – yes, i’m looking at you amber.

  • Reflects On Life

    I hope this question isn’t a retread, but….
since when are Julie London and Donna Summers one-hit wonders?

  • Tom

    They aren’t.

I don’t understand the meaning of this, as MJ posted them above.

  • jpfan2

Donna Summers, Destiny’s Child and Julie London were not one hit wonders.
This category is stupid. Lee Dewyze and Stefano are the entertainment on a boot night where no one will be eliminated. This season defines hot mess.

  • http://twitter.com/happylittlefish Amy Beth

MJ updated her post. Kree’s song choices were revealed several hours after everyone else’s.

  • matt89

its originally a samantha sang song, who was a 1-hit wonder

  • http://twitter.com/hovIand Vetle Hovland

Jimmy gave Jessica I’ll Be There, the judges gave her My All (Mariah), Simon Fuller gave her I Have Nothing. I’d say songs like Love You I Do, Turn The Beat Around (limited in terms of songs in 1995), Everybody Has A Dream, Stuttering, Bohemian Rhapsody, Sweet Dreams, Steal Away, Try a Little Tenderness and actually going outside the live portion and picking The Prayer in the finale – is proof that she at least has some guts and imagination. The only songs she picked for herself that I struggled with were How Will I Know, Dance With My Father and Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing, really.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100004875903894 Katie Smith

Even with Amber so called “bad” song choices, she still kills them.

  • http://twitter.com/hovIand Vetle Hovland

Angie sang Kari Jobe. Who can honestly say they knew that song? I think it depends what you do with the song. At least it’s not a dull ballad, like that random Crystal Gayle song Nadia Turner did (thanks WhatNotToSing!). Then I would be scared.

  • dawnage01

Fuzzy, you always make me laugh!! You are too cuuute. :-) ;-)

  • dawnage01

My god…Amber’s song choices SUCK!! I’ve always been flummoxed by Jimmy & the judges’ critiques. Amber’s supposedly current..and she chooses these old fashioned, cruise ship songs. Ugh, just boring. -___-

  • eyelinerandcigarettes

Can the finale just be candice vs. candice? lol. I love her song choices.

  • Larc

I think that’s one of the best songs ever written.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=8217634 Adam Sherman Parnell

Sorry, but “Power Ballads” are not “safe” by any means. It takes a certain level of vocal prowess to pull off those songs. Boring and dull maybe, but safe – no.

  • girlygirl

Whiter Shade of Pale seems like a hard song to cut down to 90 seconds.

  • girlygirl

I disagree. I bet a lot of the Idol audience knows who the current Billboard artists are…otherwise why would we see so many complaints about the dated song choices?

The real problem is that TPTB obviously have no clue about current artists

  • fuzzywuzzy

lol I wish! Actually, I’ve been a fan of Amber’s from the start, but alas, despite all of the pimping by Jimmy and the judges, I really don’t think that she’s ready yet. IMO, Amber has tremendous potential, but she hasn’t managed to take advantage of the opportunities that she’s had – she’s been very inconsistent IMO. I wish she had, but at this point, I’m not sure that even a “moment” will boost her into the finale, let alone lead to a win.

  • http://twitter.com/dam744 Damien Roberts

The Destiny’s Child song will rightfully be billed to its original artist, Donna Summers is for Amber’s free-choice, and Julie London is a lapse in producer judgement. But you know these guys.

  • jms

Problem is, she started off really strong, but then the choices started becoming too safe. Not to the degree of Amber, but Kree’s putting herself into a box and she’s so much better than that.

  • http://twitter.com/THEROCPRINCE Cory Patrick

cause when she sings something current, she gets sent to the bottom. Let her save the current records for her actual career, and sing the competition songs for this competition.

  • http://twitter.com/THEROCPRINCE Cory Patrick

    YES YES!

  • http://twitter.com/THEROCPRINCE Cory Patrick

I wanted Amber to do some Lauryn Hill!! Her voice would sound crazy on a Lauryn Record, no Ex-Factor? “Can’t Take My Eyes off You”? “To Zion”? anything basically lol

  • http://twitter.com/vortexpanel vortexpanel

She’s far more consistent than Angie or Kree.

  • MV007

I just checked out Angie’s “who you are” cover on youtube and if she does that on the show than all these people second guessing her choice are going to be doing a 180 tomorrow night. She could have a real moment with that arrangement.

  • http://twitter.com/WiltedYouth Tomas

OMG Amber. Honey. Child. Please. What are you doing singing a cheesy novelty song like “MacArthur Park”? That song only exists to be laughed about these days. Is that really the best one-hit wonder you could find at your disposal? And Celine Dion as your free choice? How are you supposed to be even remotely marketable if you’re singing songs older than yourself AT YOUR OWN FREE WILL?

I’m also joining the baffled as to how “Cry Me a River” can be considered a one-hit wonder. It’s a jazz standard nowadays, having been covered by pretty much everyone. But whatever, I guess there wasn’t much to go on. I’m not sure if it will do Angie any favors, but. “Who Are You” will be better, but an uninspired choice because she’s already sung it on the show. Not saying it’s a bad thing, but she could’ve done something new this week. Her YouTube cover of it is beautiful, though, so I anticipate great things.

Love Candice’s choices. I have no idea how she’ll cover the Drake song, but knowing her she’ll find a way to wow us. “Emotion” is a good choice for her voice, and the Destiny’s Child will allow her to give it a current edge.

Kree’s choices are quite solid. “A Whiter Shade of Pale” is a beautiful, haunting song that she can work with because her voice has the capability to go in that direction (like “Crying,” for instance). “It Hurt So Bad” is on the opposite side of the spectrum, allowing her to go bluesy and gritty and (if her YouTube cover is any indication) really let loose for once. She picked smartly, I think. Both songs allow her to show a balance of light and dark.

  • matt89

Both duets should be good (also worried about Kree/Amber trying to do Adele)

  • matt89

and that duet with Candice “Stay” could also be a potential show-stopper for both of them

  • taylor

Jordin had a better voice than Amber does, and Jordin was younger. Jordin also connected to the emotion behind the songs more, even at a younger age. Amber isn’t growing in that way, like Jordin did on the show.

  • matt89

But of course we know Amber will have endless standing ovations. I don’t get why the producers are trying to make Amber happen

  • taylor

Jimmy thinks she is going to be like Rihanna.

  • matt89

I know, that’s laughable. I just don’t see Amber being successful. Candice on the other-hand could be like a Mary J. Blige

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100004875903894 Katie Smith

Jimmy criticized her for over singing one week. That could be why she is holding back a little.

It looks like it’s going to be a good week although I know nothing about Drake’s music. Candice has been doing a terrific job with her song choices, so I’ll believe it wil be good. It may take two weeks to get the TOP 3, but I don’t see Amber in it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1309504183 Laudemhir Jan Maisog Parel

I bet she’s saving “You Set Me Free” for the finale. :)

  • http://twitter.com/aromendi Ada Rodriguez

Amber has left me speechless with these song choices. I don’t know if they have a short list to pick from or what but these are terrible picks. Look what happened to Kree last week when she did a Celine Dion song, bottom two. You would think Amber would learn from Kree mistake. Power of Love has been performed so many times unsuccessfully on Idol that it should be banned forever. McArthur Park? really? really? Unless she does something really creative this is the end of the line for Amber. And even if she is absolutely perfectly amazing viewers will not vote just because of these choice are very boring and out dated. Every week the judges reminds them that song choices will make them or break them. That is something that should be ingrind in their minds. I am truly heartbroken because Amber has been my favorite but she has definetly put an arrow thru her head. only a miracle can save her or the absolute downfall of one of the other girls,(which I don’t see happening) this will be Amber’s last week.

  • http://twitter.com/aromendi Ada Rodriguez

Amber has only done one Beyonce song as has Angie so I don’t understand your comment. But must agree with you that she wants to go home with these awful song choices..

  • http://twitter.com/noanaaman Noa Na’aman

she’s more consistent than Angie for sure, but i’d say Kree’s strong point is consistency. she never has big moments but even her weaker performances are still pretty solid. Amber, while great, had one or two performances that at least IMO were worse than Kree’s weakest performances. but both are pretty consistent. Angie, not as much (Shop Around anyone?).

  • http://www.amadcow2.com amadcow2

Candice will shine as usual. In my opinion, the last contestant to show such expertise in song choice/execution was Crystal Bowersox.

I see that Kree is stepping up her game and joining her rightful place alongside Candice.

Angie is playing it safe, but for her, that’s okay if she’s nestled in at third (this week). She is playing the long game and actually in a pretty good position at this point.

Oh my god Amber!! WTF are you doing with these song choices? Under the right direction, Amber could be a mega star, but left to her own devices, she won’t get anywhere singing this snoozy stuff.

Prediction: They do it all over again next week.

  • raminasr75

Not to nitpick here, but Power of Love is really a Jennifer Rush song which was a massive hit for her pretty much around the world. Yes Celine also had a big hit with it and most people associate it with her, but the original Jennifer Rush version is far superior, and I think Amber can really nail it.

  • http://twitter.com/noanaaman Noa Na’aman

but Come Together is pretty overdone. and Natural Woman is too, if you include early rounds.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I would disagree with that, but at the same time, I think that Amber has had better performances than either Angie or Kree. However, realistically, Amber hasn’t been able to connect with viewers/voters as well as Angie and Kree, so she’s been in danger of elimination more. I’m still a big fan of Amber’s, but at this point, I think that it’s a real uphill battle for her to advance to the top 3, let alone the finale. I hope that I’m wrong, but I guess that we’ll find out soon enough. I believe that the vote totals for these four are very close, which is why their rankings have changed over the weeks so much.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I think that Candice can definitely be both a critical and commercial success – she’s terrific and a bona fide artist. As an Amber fan, I think that I understand the enthusiasm that Jimmy and the judges have shown for her. Jimmy regards Amber as potentially a big pop success, and I believe that although Amber has a lot of potential, she hasn’t yet developed that enough to win this season. I think that Amber is also maleable as an artist, which Jimmy also sees and wants to take advantage of. IMO, Amber has shown flashes of brilliance this season, but she’s also had performances that haven’t been very good. However, Amber does not appear to have the voter support that Angie, Candice and Kree have (although I believe that all 4 gals are pretty close in vote totals considering how their rankings have changed over the weeks). Jimmy hasn’t always been right (eg. Pia) and it remains to be seen how far Amber will go.

  • fuzzywuzzy

    I love that song!

  • fuzzywuzzy

That’s been true for more contestants than just Amber. Jessica had the same problem last season. Even though the Idol viewing/voting demographic has changed slightly this season (median age a couple of years younger than before), it’s still pretty mature (47-48+) and I don’t think that the majority of that demo is receptive to current songs. So, contestants need to appeal to the Idol demographic in order to advance on the show, but singing those kind of songs may be very different from the kind of songs that the contestants want to record post-show. It’s a disconnect that has been happening since Idol began, but it’s become more pronounced over the years as the viewing/voting demo has matured and narrowed.

  • fuzzywuzzy

“I’m also joining the baffled as to how “Cry Me a River” can be considered a one-hit wonder. It’s a jazz standard nowadays, having been covered by pretty much everyone. ”

    I don’t get this either. It’s a jazz classic.

  • http://twitter.com/Falls_Guy Miles (Grumpy) (VI)

I’m not sure what the fuss is over Amber’s song choices. They are wonderful songs and I’m sure Jimmy has something up his sleeve for his girl arrangement wise. Not an Amber fan but curious on these choices.

I’m concerned about Angie’s OHW wonder song…. just not her style. The Jesse J song is to fuel her base.

Pressures on Kree this week and she has the song choices to do well with.

Candice is always fun….reminds me of Crystal in that regard.

  • g122y

Dont compare Janelle to Carrie Pls!

  • g122y

I am hoping that Kree will step it up this week with it hurts so bad. I dont know whiter shade of pale. I think it is kinda boring

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

Amber will sings both songs well I’m sure. She just needs to not pageant it up AND if they freshen the arrangements it can work. I just have no faith in that second sentence happening LOL. BUT, I think next week is tailor made for her and if she can pull this week off, she can knock next week out of the park and last way longer than anyone was expecting.

I have the same worry about Angie’s second song. I like Angie more than most here even if she’s not my fave. I don’t know if she can pull it off, even though I like the choice.

  • http://twitter.com/CanadianLady2 CanadianLady

Last week there was the same fuss about Amber picking a terrible song and she knocked it out of the park as far as i was concerned. So I’ll wait and see.

  • Nadine_Bitch

Well, if anything, it’s a compliment to put Janelle with Carrie’s name. She’s good and if she can even have a fifth of what Underwood have, Janelle would be so lucky:)

  • fuzzywuzzy

I agree that Amber has had some terrific performances, but I also think that her boost into the top three was because she was in the bottom two the week before, so her fans voted harder for her (like they have when anyone has been at the bottom). It will be interesting to see where she ranks this week. If she really is gaining support, then she shouldn’t be at the bottom.

  • http://twitter.com/THEROCPRINCE Cory Patrick

    lol, I disagree!

  • http://twitter.com/THEROCPRINCE Cory Patrick

exactly. When Jessica sang “Stuttering” a song that was more current, and unknown (which I thought would give her some credit than the same old songs), she was eliminated…even though she sounded amazing. People like to hear records they know, and records they love. I will change that to American Idol viewers, not people.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

As a member of the Rhythmless Nation, I am offended on Amber’s behalf. We non-dancing black chicks have to stick together! Power to the (beat challenged) people! LOL!

  • windmills

I’m digging the choices by Candice and Kree and I think Angela will do fine with her choices. Amber’s choices made me *facepalm* so I hope she has some fresh arrangements to make them sound contemporary and interesting.

  • MV007

Given this performance order, I’m even more excited about the potential for Angie’s “who you are” performance.

  • steve2013

we dont know for certain but the guess is noone is going home tommorrow & theyll carry the votes over to next week

  • Eileen8

Candice would’ve been awesome for the Rumor Has It duet. Alas.

  • vdawg

How many times has Angie had the pimp spot, they must really want her to win. Whiter Shade of Pale is a strange choice for Kree.

  • http://www.amadcow2.com amadcow2

http://youtu.be/hjBZllDo_8E << Kree will kill this

http://youtu.be/DXg6UB9Qk0o << Angie at the piano, could be a breakout

http://youtu.be/xWKdMmH0B-E << Candice will own this song

    then we have…

http://youtu.be/xaZim6ybvdA << Amber? Really girl, damn.

It won't make a difference. They will do this again next week.

  • CharlyBaltimore

I am more than pleased with Kree’s choices for tonight…and also pleased with her performance order. I’m especially looking forward to her take on “Whiter Shade of Pale.” I know it will be exquisite and haunting.

  • http://twitter.com/bluinjewin Landon Cox

Once, during rock week. I’m pretty sure they’ve all had it once. Candice and Amber twice, Kree once.

  • jms

I’d have switched Kree and Candice in the performance order. I still think Kree’s song choices, while good, are still a bit safe. She could really kill Hurt So Bad though, but she has to feel it. It’s a bluesy song, which I’ve wanted from Kree.

As for Amber, she has to be thanking the Idol gods if this is a no-elimination week. Even she can’t screw up next week’s themes. I think she’s very karaoke and disconnected (Before anyone argues that she does put emotion into the songs and I’m being unfair to her, let’s just agree to disagree there). And I’m tired of the judges Joshua Ledet-ing her. At least Joshua IMO deserved it most of the time.

I think Find Your Love and Who You Are are really excellent choices. I think Amber and Kree on Rumor Has It will probably have potential to take them somewhere less boring. I think they should watch JDA’s performance of the song. Not for the vocals, they have that. But for the energy.

  • fuzzywuzzy

    Performance order (bolded = eliminated):

Top 10: Curtis, Janelle, Devin, Angie, Paul, Candice, Lazaro, Kree, Burnell, Amber
Top 9: Kree, Burnell, Amber, Lazaro, Candice, Paul, Angie, Devin, Janelle
Top 8: Candice, Lazaro, Janelle, Devin, Burnell, Angie, Amber, Kree
Top 7: Burnell, Kree, Janelle, Lazaro, Candice, Amber, Angie
Top 6: Angie, Amber, Lazaro, Kree, Janelle, Candice
Top 5: Candice, Janelle, Kree, Angie, Amber
Top 4: Amber, Candice, Kree, Angie

    Interesting.

Amber has sung last 3x and second to last 2x.
Angie has sung last 2x (including tonight) and second to last 1x.
Candice has sung last 1x and first 2x.
Kree has sung last 1x and second to last 1x (tonight).
Janelle has sung last 1x and second to last 1x.

  • LeahKittyS

Hmm…very interesting. With the exception of one week, everyone who went home was in the early half of the set. Candice and especially Amber are lucky they’re not cutting anyone this week.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I actually think that singing first is better than 2nd, 3rd or 4th (or in the middle).

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Robert-Henry-Eller/1125885211 Robert Henry Eller

Is there any question that tonight’s contest is really a battle between Kree and Amber? Candice is not going anywhere. Angela would have to crash to be in the bottom two. Kree and Amber need to be great tonight to beat each other, forget about Candice and Angela.

This take on tonight’s contest has nothing to do with my take on any of these girls as singers.

Can’t say a thing against Candice, she has been showing up, and is clearly the most consistent and strongest.

Angela doesn’t really hit any of my more sensitive receptor sites, but I know I’m the outlier on that, and she has her demographics. And, she’s a nice girl. But for me, she doesn’t inhabit her songs. She is best at the piano, exactly as everyone says, but it’s always over the top for me there. I’ve like to see if she can deliver more softly at the piano, but I don’t think she’s going to try that.

Kree has a beautiful, and most importantly, affecting, voice. I’ve been wishing somehow she’d get a chance to do Bonnie Raitt’s “I can’t make you love me,” with which I believe she would leave nothing in her wake, just wreck the place. You’d have to be a monster not to warm up to her.

Put a gun to my head, and I’d have to confess I think Amber is going home Thursday night, baring something unforeseeable, like she finally gives a breakthrough performance. And by that I mean, breaking through with the voting audience. She’s got the judges. But before you pull the trigger, I’ve got to confess she’s had me from way back, because she has something in her voice that no one else has, certainly not on AI, and not being done by any singer I can think of, certainly no one of her generation, or the generation ahead of her. I’ve not only not been into the “next Whitney” thing, I’ve aggressively dismissed the idea. Because Whitney was unique. And I think Amber is unique.

Much as I “get” the other three girls, Amber for me is simply the irreplaceable voice. I can find other girls that sing like Candice, Angela, Kree. I can’t find any other Ambers. Hers is the voice I would truly miss if she disappears after this show. I’ve never thought for more than one hopeful second that she could win, if only because few things I’ve ever liked seem to be massively popular. I’d like to hear her prove me wrong tonight, mostly for herself. I’m glad I got to hear her for this long. I hope I don’t have to wait too long until I hear her again. But if I get to hear her again next week, I’ll be smiling.

  • fuzzywuzzy

“Kree has a beautiful, and most importantly, affecting, voice. I’ve been wishing somehow she’d get a chance to do Bonnie Raitt’s “I can’t make you love me,” with which I believe she would leave nothing in her wake, just wreck the place. You’d have to be a monster not to warm up to her.”

Wow. “a monster”?? I totally disagree. I like Kree, but I would never characterize anyone who didn’t as a “monster”.

  • BBchez

you know i think is even more interesting…a guy never had the “pimp spot”

  • http://twitter.com/hovIand Vetle Hovland

It will only be her second time in the pimp spot… Amber has already had it three times. Kree once. Candice twice. So yeah.

  • jms

A monster? Wow. No thanks :P.

  • taylor

Once, just like Candice and Kree. Amber has had the pimp spot three times. She is the one they are pushing.

  • fuzzywuzzy

True. Not even second to last.

  • http://twitter.com/hovIand Vetle Hovland

Candice sang last on top 10 girls, so it’s 2x. I guess you counted that since Amber only has 2x on your chart. :P

  • jms

Devin Top 9 week was second to last.

  • jms

Amber sang last 3x and Candice once? Ugh.

  • http://twitter.com/hovIand Vetle Hovland

Candice had the pimp spot in the top 10 girls, so twice. And yeah, this will be Angie’s second. ;)

  • steve2013

Anyone of them could go if there is an elimination. Apart from last week kree has been in any top 2/3 revealed to us & with janelle now gone should get a boost of votes.

Candice/Angie havent always been in top 3 or whatever. After Kree being in the B2 last week that seems to indicate to me the voting is very close any of them could go imho

  • fuzzywuzzy

My post was only about the top 10 finalists, but thanks for that info.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Actually, Amber sang last 2x, not 3x (I fixed my comments).

  • jms

Oh ok, much better (considering one of them was My Funny Valentine, right?)

  • LeoCS

    Procol Harum is a one-hit wonder?Lol, what a joke

  • fuzzywuzzy

    Amber sang:

Top 10: “A Moment Like This”

Top 5: “What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?”

Amber sang “My Funny Valentine” when she performed last in the females, group 1, semi-finals.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Idol_(season_12)

  • jms

Oh. I’m just gonna pretend My Funny Valentine was one of her finalist pimp spot performances because I didn’t like those other two :P.

  • Jordana33

Any contestant who picks a Celine Dion song as their personal choice needs to be eliminated just for having such bad taste in music. I love Amber’s voice, but she had thousands and thousands of songs to pick from, and she ended up picking a song that’s even sappy by Celine Dion standards. Why Amber????

  • taylor

I was referring to the actual top 10, or the final rounds. In those rounds Amber has had the pimp spot 3x and the others have only had it 1x each.

  • fuzzywuzzy

lol Actually, MFV was the performance that made me a fan of Amber’s and I think that it did the same for a lot of people. Before that, she really hadn’t had any (or very little?) screen time.

  • tucker davis

“It Hurt So Bad”….man, if Kree can’t let loose with this one, she doesn’t deserve the win. That’s a great choice!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/joeyhbanks Joey Banks

Well, that’s why it’s a one hit “wonder.”

  • kk

she probably only had 10 songs to pick from (if that), and she didn’t bother fighting for another (like Candice).

  • http://www.facebook.com/kariann.hart.5 Kariann Hart

I think Amber was going home even before she made this choice.

  • http://www.facebook.com/kariann.hart.5 Kariann Hart

I agree, most of Jessica’s choices were darn good; some perfection.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Probably. I just don’t understand the choice of MP.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

I don’t think performance order matters much one you hit Top 4. It’s fanbase time methinks (plus win over casual viewers time). That said Angie getting the pimp spot makes me think whichever song she sings last is GREAT. Looking forward to it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/kariann.hart.5 Kariann Hart

I wonder if she got special permission from Drake because I don’t think it was on Idol’s list.

  • Jordana33

That sucks if it’s true. However, I’d rather believe that the choices were limited than believe that she actually wanted to sing Celine Dion above anything else!

  • fuzzywuzzy

No, she’s only had it 2x.

    In the Top 10 finalists:

Amber has sung last 2x, second to last 2x and first 1x.
Angie has sung last 2x (including tonight), second to last 1x and first 1x.
Candice has sung last 1x and first 2x.
Kree has sung last 1x, second to last 1x (tonight) and first 1x.
Janelle has sung last 1x and second to last 1x.

Performance order for each show here:

Kree doing Procol Harum? That ought to be interesting as all hell. And one hit wonder? Really? ‘Conquistador’ anyone? ‘Whisky Train’? Lord AI comes across as thick.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Amber has only had the pimp spot 2x and Candice 1x in the top 10 finals.

    http://www.mjsbigblog.com/american-idol-12-top-4-song-spoilers.htm#comment-874523594

  • steve2013

Totally agree at this stage everyone has there fanbase no matter how good bad they are. Its now about who gets the casual viewers/voters thatll determine who wins

  • http://twitter.com/aromendi Ada Rodriguez

I don’t see as much disdain for Angie as I do for Amber!

  • http://twitter.com/aromendi Ada Rodriguez

TPTB should put a quota on the number of Jessie B songs that Angie can sing as this is the third time she has covered her.

  • Heidi Ifft

Agreed. Should bring down the house with that. It’s the perfect song for her.

  • http://twitter.com/Lutrell4 Ira

See it a little different. Disappointment in Amber’s judgement as opposed to disdain.

  • CB40

That duet of Stay might end up being the best performance of the year.

  • http://twitter.com/Miztig Miz

No kidding. I want to know who is responsible for the music list on this show.

  • taylor

Changing my comments now…was going by your original data. lol

  • fuzzywuzzy

Sorry about that, taylor. My bad.

  • http://twitter.com/Nittcgd Cheryl G-D

I like Amber, Kree, Candice best. But realistically I figure Amber will go. I will miss her.

  • http://twitter.com/Nittcgd Cheryl G-D

I think Amber is very marketable and Candice great voice

  • http://twitter.com/Nittcgd Cheryl G-D

Angie has pimp spot so she will get tons of praise, votes and standing O, I predict

  • Chablis

I love MacArthur Park even if I am in the minority. I like Amber as well as I believe she is very marketable even if I am in the minority. Can’t warm up to Angela feel is too theatrical.

  • http://twitter.com/THEROCPRINCE Cory Patrick

Someone who shares my opinion! You are awesome! lol

  • http://twitter.com/Nittcgd Cheryl G-D

and Angie and Candie, sounds lije a group lol. But those two together good for votes

  • http://twitter.com/THEROCPRINCE Cory Patrick

I think Performance order always has some type of influence.

  • http://twitter.com/THEROCPRINCE Cory Patrick

Well I know Candice has been working on song clearances for awhile. She mentioned that she’s been trying to get “Bound To You” by Xtina cleared for awhile but still hasn’t happened.

  • http://twitter.com/Nittcgd Cheryl G-D

I just hope this is non elim week as I love these four and want another week of. I am not ready to say bye yet. I hope they do not do two weeks of F3 but yes to F4 twice as less boring with more people

  • Connie Stamley

Well maybe this performance order means Kree will get the pimp spot next week since the others will have had it twice.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I agree with everything that you said, except I dislike MP. lol

  • HKfan

I love the Jennifer Rush version of The Power of Love, I much prefer her voice to Celine Dions.

  • http://twitter.com/BazzleFjsm Bazzle

Candice’s and Kree’s song choices are brilliant. Absolutely Brilliant.

  • Erlie

I think Kree should leave American Idol and let Angie and Amber take the crown. She does not deserve the yelling from Minaj!

  • teacup

YAS Angie SNATCHING them BALD! lolll

  • Face

and there in lies the rub… young girls entering the show think that’s what they have to do to succeed… and perhaps they do… but they fail to show any true musical identity and may end up with the ‘we don’t know who you are as an artist’ tag… as well as singing songs on the show that aren’t going to create fans out of the audience they need to attract (other young girls)…

  • Face

while I don’t recall her singing some of those songs… I still only think 2 of them were interesting or bold… the rest dull, safe, done to death or plain old cheesy… imo

  • Face

safe as an in choice, not as in easy to sing… there’s skill required in pulling off any song successfully regardless of type of song… :)

  • g122y

this is way way way better than Amber’s performance..
