American Idol 11: No Doubt’s Gwen Stefani, Tony Kanal Will Mentor Top 8

No Doubt members singer Gwen Stefani and bassist Tony Kanal will mentor the Top 8 finalists this week as they tackle the songs of the 80’s.

Gwen Stefani has appeared on Idol previously. She styled the season 10 contestants last year in her own L.A.M.B. line. That was the week Pia Toscano was eliminated, and there are those who blame Gwen’s fugly clothes for her shocking boot. Heh.

Gwen also mentored the Season 6 finalists in a Top 10 theme week that was “Insprired by the Songs of No Doubt”. One of Idols’s vaguest themes ever!

Of course, No doubt is signed to mentor, Jimmy Iovine’s Interscope Records.

Oh yeah, I remember Pia’s outfit.  I’m sure most people do and now with Tommy Hilfiger in the equation this year, heaven only knows what hideous outfits we may see next week.  Heh

With it being 80’s week, I’ll be interested to see how the mentoring sessions go.

  • Kirsten

Please tell me they aren’t going to let Gwen style the girls.

  • Valentin432

She was a really bad mentor on season 6, altough her session with Sanjaya singing Bathwater was so awkward it became funny and the ponyhawk is legendary.

I don’t really get the link to the theme but it can’t be worse than P Diddy mentoring for Billy Joel week.

A lot of No Doubt’s music is influenced by the 80s. Tony Kanal is a great musician and producer. So he can be a big help.

“I don’t really get the link to the theme but it can’t be worse than P Diddy mentoring for Billy Joel week.”

Ha-ha! Diddy was totally unprofessional, with his questionable level of sobriety and his creepy groupies milling around during the mentoring sessions.

No Doubt should/better be an improvement over that.

Considering what we’ve already seen it
could be alot worse. Her idol trackrecord
sorta speaks for itself! Is she still a musician,
or a celebrity fashion designer? I guess they are
    pimping something…..*shudders*

  • Wally.

I just hope she doesnt tel Jessica to wear a cowjumpsuit.

  • callmecrazy

I wish they would bring back Harry Connick Jr. as a mentor….he is always fun and very helpful to the contestants.

I would be most happy if both he and Mary J. Blige were to replace Steven and Jennifer.

LOL. I liked Diddy, even though he seemed kind of out of it.

Ugh. All the girls this year have the worst sense of fashion. Well, actually they have great style, just not on performance night. Their performance night outfits are almost always terrible.

  • callmecrazy

Tommy has been totally useless in styling the contestants and I hope they keep Gwen and her fashions far away from the contestants this season.  *yowza*

  • Incipit

I was gonna ask what did Stefani ever contribute besides a cow jumpsuit and a plaid diaper, that she should be back – but I guess the question really is – what’s she trying to sell now? Harajuku Girls merch?  Has she got a new perfume, or something?

What a waste of time. IMO.

  • Madred

A lot of what they’re doing this season feels like Nigel is trying to recreate Season 6.

  • Jane

    Bring back Stevie Nicks!

No Doubt supposedly has a new album coming out this year, so it makes sense Jimmy would pick their two focal members (watch it get delayed until 2013, and then 2014, and 2015…)

Regardless of Gwen’s trainwreck-ish fashion advice last season, I love Gwen and Tony, so I’m excited they’re both appearing.

    Because fair’s fair:

This year Gwen Stefani can pick out outfits for all the male finalists on next week’s show.  Yes Phillip, that means you too.

I had to check out how her mentoring was in Season 6, so I searched ALL the way back in this site’s Season 6 stuff (I have to LOL at the fact that everyone has pictures of them singing, but Sanjaya’s is just his pony-hawk). Then I watched Sanjaya’s performance and her mentoring seemed a bit awkward for that one. She looks a lot better without that red lipstick though.

  • aquayers

One of the worst mentor ever!!! She was awful in Season 6 and her fashion advice got Pia eliminated from the show.

  • Anonymous

I’m a big No Doubt fan, but yeah, Gwen isn’t one of the best mentors this show has ever had, lol.
I’m looking forward to seeing Tony Kanal, tho.

Pia got eliminated because she was boring and robotic. A ugly outfit is not the kiss of death on Idol, but predictability and the inability to engage the audience is.

  • Chris

The ’80s were all about crazy clothes so Gwen’s fashion advice may work. With Whitney’s death we all got a flash back with her videos so bad fashion was “in.”

  • Chris

Pia can’t dance and it showed, the ugly outfit was no help, but not the nail in the coffin. Singing Tina Turner River Deep Mountain High and standing, walking robotic revealed a flaw. She would not match the pop stars who make a big production out of a song. Tina Turner at ’60 moves better than Pia at 20 ish. That said, Adele has started a wave perhaps in reverse. But we’ll have to see if she is the exception or the new rule.

I think Adele is one of kind. Adele has a unique voice and vocal styling, she’s not interchangeable with someone else. Pia was just copying other people.

  • Chris

Most Adele songs are slow so too. The judges often encourage these contestants to step outside their box, but that can be the kiss of death if they can’t pull it off. P2 and a lot of the guys just ignore the switch it up comments.

At this point, it feels like Nigel is saying to himself “How can I sabotage my own shoe even more? I know! We’ll do an 80s week & bring back Gwen Stefani!” UGH.

I’m not really looking forward to Gwen as a mentor, but I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt until I see how it goes down.  I will say though that last week after their mentoring sessions the kids were all abuzz on twitter with excitement, both over meeting Stevie and about how great their mentoring sessions went.  This week, they had their mentoring sessions yesterday and I haven’t heard a peep from any of the idols about how they went, which to me isn’t a great sign.

  • NFLRocks

Pia picked ballads every week…it was more than her outfit that got her eliminated.  Her best performance was Chrissy Hynde’s “I’ll Stand By You.”  Singing Celine, Whitney, every week will get you “fired”

  • too-cool-for-school

“I haven’t heard a peep from any of the idols about how they went, which to me isn’t a great sign.”

If so, that’s too bad! These contestants deserve more encouraging, helpful mentors. If I remember Gwen’s season six mentoring correctly, she was shy and distant-seeming. I don’t want to say cold as she maybe isn’t really that way, but that was how she came across.

Definitely not as warm and welcoming as Stevie. There was probably a big difference between the two!

    Elise…Sweet Child O’ Mine.

I LOVE Gwen.  Pia could have chosen a better outfit like Haley did.  I mean, Pia had no backbone.  She is a puppet.

I haven’t been watching but I will try to tune in.  I loved her reaction to Sanjaya doing Bathwater.  Pure gold Idol fun.

I am looking forward to Gwen and Tony because they are great musicians and I love their music.  I also love Gwen’s fashion (especially love her new kids line) but the contestants have to choose an outfit that will flatter their figure.  Mentoring is done differently now that Jimmy Iovine is part of AI so I think we will see more input from Gwen.  Also, everyone is putting down Billy Joel week and I love Billy Joel music – he is an amazing lyricist/musician and I feel the contestants could have done a much better job of knowing the song’s lyric to interpret the song on a more emotional level to the audience – most of them did not do that.  When Gwen was on before, Jordyn did a great job with “Sweet Escape.”

  • aquayers

haha I was being sarcastic on that outfit thing. I’m well aware that some people didn’t like Pia because of boring and robotic. But I think Pia was one of the best contestant that year, for me personally. After Pia was gone,it became too mediocre for me that season. Until Haley knocked every performances out of the park every weeks.

  • Axxxel

I only saw P Diddy when he mentored Jessica and what he said was spot on…

  • CanadianLady

Okay, I might be leaning toward Phillip a bit. last week’s song sounded the best to me of what he’s done (which have all sounded the same.) When I was buying Heejun’s song, I decided to buy Phillip’s just so I could see how the entire song actually sounds. Plus they had tweeted to fans to buy each other’s songs, which was nice. :)

I put it in a random playlist, and a few minutes ago it came on while I was thinking re other things, and I stopped and went, “Who is that! He sounds good.” And realized it was Phillip. And I finally got what the judges have been saying, and what is similar to Scotty last year. He sounds like a recording artist, and not like an aspiring one. Scotty had the same thing – he could sing well enough to cut a record the first day. Phillip does too. Don’t know if it’s just the inner confidence or what, but I could hear it.
