The Live Playoffs are over! Tonight, Team Pharrell and Team Gwen performed for your votes. What was up with Pharrell and his song choices? The sandbagging of his team member, Jean Kelley was hard to watch. First, handing her that WTF song choice from some 80s diva, hardly anyone remembers? She didn’t look comfortable singing it. Kelley said it–she wants to sing contemporary music. THEN the coaches PILED ON HER . She had to endure negative critiques the others didn’t. If she was crying her eyes out after that, I wouldn’t be surprised.
Make NO mistake about it. I love me some Joni Mitchell. Court and Spark is one of the best albums of that era. It was both artistic and popular. But that was 40 years ago. And “Help Me” is a deep cut, not to mention a really difficult song to sing. I just don’t understand Pharrell’s logic here, unless he was purposely sabotaging her. He chose well for his other team members, so it makes me wonder.
Gwen’s song picks for both Anita Antoinette and Taylor John Williams looked bizarre on first glance. But they both made the songs their own, as they say. Anita took the cheesetastic “All About That Bass” and turned it into a celebration of girl power. And Taylor proved that he is more than just a guitar strummer with his “swampy” version of “Stuck in the Middle with You.” He made me give that song another look!
