I’m not sure how I feel about this Voice 10 preview. Joe Maye is scaring me a little in this preview from tonight’s 4th Blind audition. But then again, anyone who takes on Screamin’ Jay Hawkins “I Put a Spell On You” has got to bring on the crazy in order to evoke the song’s theme of obsession and consuming love.
But you haven’t seen crazy until coach Christina Aguilera joins Joe on stage for a duet of the song.
Christina turns for Joe first, followed by Blake Shelton. Joe is a returnee, Pharrell Williams helpfully reminds us. He sang “Word Up” on his first outing, which was a confusing song choice at the time for Pharrell, who feels the singer returned with a GREAT tune this time.
Christina is so happy she returned this season to hear Joe sing with “fresh ears” reminding everyone that she wasn’t around for that first audition. Blake weakly offers that his team was full, which Joe knows isn’t true.
“You sang that like you were pissed,” says Blake. “You were not going to take no for an answer. And it worked! You put a spell on me.” Blake pulls out the “I know how to navigate this gauntlet” card. “You really don’t really want to do this with somebody who doesn’t know how to make it to the end and win the show,” he says.
Christina loves the song so much she hopes to sing it with Joe one day. “Why don’t you?” challenges Pharrell. The crowd roars as a tech comes out with a microphone for Christina, who adds mostly ad libs to Joe’s performance. Yep. The crazy just kicked up a notch. Blake Shelton is a dead man.
