The Amazing Race 29 Recap – Week 4 Live Blog

A special two-hour edition of The Amazing Race airs tonight on CBS. Read a live recap and join the discussion here.

The episode begins with more drama between Vanck and Ashton with Matt and Redmond. Vanck and Ashton tell them they only used the U-Turn on Matt and Redmond since they were the only teams that did something against them in a prior leg. Afterwards, the teams begin the next leg of the race. They must proceed to Stone Town and go to the Mercury House, named after Freddie Mercury since that is where he used to live. Liz and Michael are surprised that they have placed first twice in a row. However, they get lost on the way to Mercury House, allowing Tara and Joey to get there first. Tara and Joey learn they have a Detour to complete: Lock (find a key in a secret compartment in a chest) or Knock (retrieve three wood cravings after finding and knocking on three royal doors). Tara and Joey choose to do Knock. Meanwhile, Vanck and Ashton and Matt and Redmond are next to learn to go to Stone Town and to the Mercury House, and right behind them are London and Logan and Brooke and Scott. Becca and Floyd and Sara and Shamir are the last teams to proceed to Stone Town.

Liz and Michael finally find the Mercury House, and they choose to do the Lock Detour. Tara and Joey manage to find a royal door, but they struggle finding another one. They decide to switch to the Lock Detour. Liz and Michael arrive before they find a key. London and Logan, Brooke and Scott, and Matt and Redmond are the next teams to arrive at the Lock Detour, and all of them are struggling finding a key. None of them realize that the chests have a secret compartment. Eventually, Michael realizes that there are secret compartments in the chests and he tells this to Liz. She finds a key, and now they can unlock a chest and retrieve their next clue. They must take a ferry and proceed to Dar es Salaam and go to a metal shop.

After no success finding a key, Tara and Joey decide to switch back to the Knock Detour. Meanwhile, Vanck and Ashton are lost while working on the Knock Detour. The two of them are bickering as they are unable to locate a door. Vanck wants to switch to a different Detour, but Ashton refuses. Eventually, a local tells Ashton exactly where the three royal doors are, and Vanck and Ashton now know where to go.

Becca and Flloyd and Sara and Shamir finally arrive at the Mercury House, with the former team choosing to do Lock and the latter team choosing Knock. Eventually, Brooke finally realizes the secret compartments, and it allows Scott to find a key. The key he finds is not working, so he and Brooke choose to find another one. Matt realizes there is a secret compartment too, so he finds a key. He and Redmond can now proceed to the ferry. Brooke and Scott find a second key, and they are finally able to unlock a chest with the second key. Becca asks for guidance, and Scott gives her the key that he was unable to unlock a chest with. This greatly annoys Brooke, but she later admits that it’s good to have a team owe them a favor. Becca manages to unlock a chest, allowing her and Floyd to go to the ferry. Meanwhile, Vanck and Ashton and Tara and Joey manage to complete the Knock Detour. London and Logan have no success at the Lock Detour, so they decide to switch Detours too. However, luckily for them, a woman outside the entrance of the Lock Detour knew where all three royal doors are, and she tells them where they are located.

All the other teams are on the ferry except for London and Logan and Sara and Shamir. Sara and Shamir are completely lost, and Sara is adamant about being in charge due to Shamir’s attitude at the Roadblock in Brazil. She wants to continue to find the royal doors, even though Shamir wants to switch to the other Detour. However, they are still in last place while London and Logan complete the Knock Detour. London and Logan are the last team to board the ferry before it departs, putting Sara and Shamir even further behind. All the other teams are glad to be way ahead of Sara and Shamir since it betters their odds of surviving the leg.

The other teams arrive at the Roadblock, which requires one team member to pound metal into a cooking utensil. They are all working on the Roadblock at the same time with Michael, Brooke, Becca, Redmond, Vanck, Joey, and Logan working on the Roadblock. Brooke is in tears as she’s struggling with the Roadblock. She is crying as she says she cannot do the Roadblock and is upset that Scott didn’t do this instead. She eventually asks Becca for help, and Becca obliges since Scott gave her the key at the Detour. The two of them say they are even now. However, Brooke is still in distress as she continues pounding the metal, and Redmond eventually goes over to her and assists her. Meanwhile, Sara and Shamir have completed the Lock Detour and are on a ferry on the way to the Roadblock.

Joey and Becca are the first two to complete the Roadblock, allowing Tara and Joey and Becca and Floyd to proceed to the Pit Stop: Coco Beach. Tara and Joey are the first to arrive, and they each win $5,000. While they are still on the mat, Becca and Floyd arrive as Team #2.

Michael is the next to complete the Roadblock. Before he leaves with Liz, he gives Brooke (who is still very upset) some words of encouragement and advice on how to do the Roadblock. Redmond, Logan, and Vanck are the next to complete the Roadblock, and Brooke tells Scott she wants them to take a penalty. He refuses while we see Liz and Michael, Matt and Redmond, and London and Logan arrive at the Pit Stop.

Brooke completes the Roadblock, and she is very emotional to have managed to have passed it. She and Scott can now go to the Pit Stop where Vanck and Ashton are greeting Phil as Team #6. Brooke and Scott arrive later as Team #7. Night has already fallen by the time we see Shamir working on the Roadblock. He’s hoping for a non-elimination leg, but Phil comes to the metal shop and informs him and Sara that all the other teams have already checked in. Phil tells Sara and Shamir that they have been eliminated from the race.

4th place: Matt & Redmond

5th place: London & Logan

Tara and Joey are the first to learn their next destination: Alesund, Norway. Once there, they must proceed to Hogsteinen Fyr Lighthouse. The teams make their way to the travel agency to book their flights. Since this is the last leg the Express Pass can be used, Becca and Floyd plan to use it today to ensure a first place finish. In addition, all the teams board on the same flight to Norway.

Becca and Floyd and Brooke and Scott are the first teams to arrive at the lighthouse. Before they can get their next clue, they must eat some raw fish. Afterward, they will be handed their next clue, which tells them to proceed to the village of Slinningen. Brooke is struggling with eating the fish, but she does manage to finish it. Becca and Floyd, however, are the first to get the next clue, and they see there is a Fast Forward in the clue. They decide to do it, which requires teams to board a helicopter. Unknown to them at the moment, they will have to skydive 10,000 feet from the air. All the other teams are arriving at the lighthouse, and Brooke and Scott wanted to do the Fast Forward too. However, they see Becca and Floyd are already there. As Brooke and Scott make their way to Slinningen, they start bickering. Brooke wants Scott to drive faster, but Scott says he’s not going over the speed limit.

While Becca and Floyd are in the helicopter, Matt and Redmond  are the first to arrive at the Roadblock. The Roadblock requires one team member to climb up a very tall stack of wooden pallets several storeys high. They must take a wooden pallet up the stack and nail a pallet of their own onto the structure at the very top. Matt and Joey are the first two to attempt the Roadblock as more teams are arriving. Matt finishes the Roadblock first, and he and Redmond gets their next clue. They learn they have a Detour to complete: Trolls (search for fire trolls around town and recite a spell for freedom until they are rewarded with six rockets that will spell out the name of the Pit Stop) or Troll (kayak through a canal and check lures of fisherman that will spell out the Pit Stop). Joey, Ashton, London, Scott, and Liz all complete the Roadblock with no issues. However, after Vanck and Ashton go back to their car, they realize Ashton’s pack is missing. She is frustrated with Vanck after she has to go back to retrieve it. Becca and Floyd, meanwhile, learn they will have to skydive, and they are very excited.

Matt and Redmond are the first team to attempt the kayaking Detour, with Tara and Joey right behind them. Tara and Joey find a lure that says Aksla, but they are unsure what to do next. Meanwhile, Vanck and Ashton, Brooke and Scott, Liz and Michael, and London and Logan arrive at the fire trolls Detour. Vanck and Ashton manage to find their first two rockets with no issue while Brooke and Scott and London and Logan work together and find rockets too. Liz and Michael, on the other hand, are still trying to find their first rocket. Michael even gets frustrated with Liz and he says she is incorrectly reading the map. However, Liz was reading it correctly as she finds the location of their first rocket, and Michael apologizes. Meanwhile, Vanck and Ashton decide to use a car to transport the rockets they have collected.

Back at the Fast Forward, Becca and Floyd jump out of the helicopter as part of the skydiving portion of the task. Once they land back on earth, they are given their next clue. They can now proceed to the Pit Stop: Mount Aksla. Although they have the Express Pass, they didn’t even need to use it. Meanwhile, at the kayak Detour, Tara and Joey and Matt and Redmond discuss what to do next. After Joey shows them the lure they retrieved, Matt and Redmond realized they did not grab a correct lure since theirs doesn’t say Aksla on it. Matt and Redmond go find a correct lure, and Tara is frustrated Joey told them the correct answer. Matt and Redmond and Tara and Joey finally do figure out where to go, and they proceed to Mount Aksla.

Becca and Floyd are on their way to the Pit Stop, and they believe they are in first place due to completing the Fast Forward. However, Tara and Joey and Matt and Redmond get there first, with the former taking first place. Becca and Floyd arrive later, and they are stunned to learn they are Team #3. Nonetheless, they are grateful for the experience they had today.

The other teams are working on the other Detour, collecting their rockets. All the teams are carrying them by hand, except Vanck and Ashton are using a car. London and Logan and Brooke and Scott are the next two to finish the task, and they make their way to the Pit Stop. Liz and Michael complete the task too, and they make their way to the Pit Stop. However, Michael hits a van as he drives out of the curb. However, the owner of the van says the damage isn’t too bad, and he lets them go.

Vanck and Ashton arrive at the Pit Stop as Team #4, and Brooke is once again getting frustrated with Scott as they climb up the mountain to the Pit Stop with London and Logan. Brooke is very exhausted climbing up the stairs, and she says Scott always makes her feel bad about herself. We see Liz and Michael drive to the mountain and board an elevator as they try to find the Pit Stop. However, London and Logan and Brooke and Scott arrive there before them, taking fifth and sixth place respectively.

Liz and Michael are bickering as they are lost trying to find the Pit Stop. They eventually do find it, and Phil informs them they are the last team to arrive. However, this is a non-elimination leg. Nonetheless, Liz and Michael are still very frustrated and arguing with each other. They each say they are done before “To be continued” flashes across the screen.
