Siobhan Magnus – Cape Cod Melody Tent – Photos and Recap

First things first: A HUGE thanks to the peeps of Siofan for inviting me to attend the Siobhan Magnus concert at the Cape Cod Melody tent on Saturday. WHAT A FUN TIME! I had 2nd row seats to Siobhan’s big night, courtesy of the group! (and a Vegas fan who could not make it).

I was invited to a catered meet and greet beforehand where, while noshing on cocktail shrimp and puff pastries, I had a chance to chat with Siobhan for a few minutes.

She was REALLY excited about the 3 original songs she co-wrote in Nashville and was about to debut on stage. Siobhan plans to split her time between the Cape and Nashville as she finishes her album. Her debut CD is about halfway done and is set to be released in October.

The concert itself was in 3 parts. First, Siobhan sang a few songs with her local band, Lunar Valve. After a quick costume change, Siobhan and her backing band took the stage, in front of an audience of enthusiastic fans, to perform a mixture of covers and originals.

An eclectic set allowed Siobhan to show off a wide range of styles. Her signature scream, which was her go-to gimmick on Idol, was used to great effect on the songs with a harder edge. But Siobhan displayed a softer side too–particularly on her lovely acoustic versions of Idol favorite, “Across the Universe” and the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back”. Siobhan asked crowd to sing along to the latter, which we did. Enthusiastically I might add.

After performing her single “Beatrice Dreams”, Siobhan broke out the new songs. The first was a torchy, Pinkish ballad called “Hollywood Carousel”.  An homage to Siobhan’s favorite artist, Edward Gorey, “Black Doll” was next. The tune had a good melody and a hard-rock vibe.  The mid-tempo “Scapegoat”  rounded out the set of originals, weaving a passionate chorus into sweet, melodic verses.

A horn section joined Siobhan onstage for her encore–a soulful medley of two more Idol favorites, “Living For the City” and “Think”. One of her fans leaned over and said, delightedly, that the fanbase had been dying to hear these songs live. It was the first time she performed them since Idol, and it felt like a big thank you to her fans.

She also, adorably, threw in a Hanson cover, “The Great Divide”.

After a longer break, and another costume change, Siobhan took the stage with her uncle’s band, the Ultrasonic Rock Orchestra. The URO are a huge outfit who present the best of 70’s classic rock (hint: It’s BRITISH bitches) in flashy style.  There were several guitarists, a couple of keyboards, drums, percussion and a crew of singers. It’s the rock and roll circus come to town as a huge wall of sparkly, glammy sound. Siobhan had a few solos here and there–on “Helter Skelter” and “Immigrant Song”– but performed mostly as one of the voices in the huge ensemble of talented, polished singers. The set ended with a stunning version of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain”.

I took a lot of photos. Girlfriend is SUPER PHOTOGENIC. Check out the setlist, and my gallery of photos, below.
