Tonight, the Sing-Off groups perform #1 hits. The bottom two will sing off, and one group goes home. We’re live blogging the show right here.
Looks like the judges step into mentor tonight.
The group number is “In Your Eyes” by Peter Gabriel. It’s a showcase for some the best lead singers in the groups.
Only 4 groups Ten, Street Corner Renaissance, the AcoutiKats and the Filharmonic will compete in tonight’s 1 hour show. One will leave the competition at the end of night. Next week, the remaining groups will perform.
Shawn Stockman meets with the 4 groups. Dude from Street Corner Renaissance says he literally saw Shawn go from “boys to men.” He reminds us that the group started out a cappella. The groups choose their songs.
Ten – Chain of Fools by Aretha Franklin – Shawn tells the group to drag out the phrasing. Need some stank face! Take them to church, he says. It took a minute to liven up. But when it did, it was a bit over the top. But the gritty female lead singer was pretty awesome. Shawn didn’t think the performance was long enough. Jewel wants to go to THAT church. She loved the staging. Ben thought the band didn’t quite support the rhythm.
AcoUstikats – Amazed by Lonestar – Amazed was first offered to to Boyz II Men, Shawn has a connection to the song. He advises them to pick a girl in the crowd and sing to her. So corny. The group finally calms down, and the harmonies improve. They aren’t perfect, but there are some really pretty moments. The chubby guy is a REALLY good singer. Ben says they just separated themselves from the college a cappella pack. Jewel appreciated their heart and sincerity. They tackled the harmonics admirably. Shawn thinks they did great. But he wished there had been more buildup. One of the singers’ girlfriends is in the audience. He took Shawn’s advice and sang to her.
OH SH*T HE’S GOING TO PROPOSE TO HIS GIRLFRIEND. HE DOES. SHE SAYS YES.
Street Corner Renaissance – “Forget Your” by Cee Lo Green – Always have a beginning a middle and an end, says Shawn. A very sharp, fun performance from the group. They really capture the comic sensibility of the song. Very entertaining. Ben called it timeless and awesome. The crying was “groovy.” He wants them to push themselves to discover something new. Jewell thought the song fit their style. She’d like them to tighten up the harmonies. Shawn appreciates that they took his advice. He also advises that they try some new things.
The Filharmonic – One More Night by Maroon 5 – Shawn gives them advice on how to deliver the beat. Make the sound edgier, he says. This is pretty great from top to bottom. Love the energetic arrangement. Shawn thinks it’s the tightest they’ve ever been. Great, intricate dance moves, says Shawn. Ben thought the performance was tight, but he wasn’t excited about it. Jewel thought there were some interesting things going on. She wished they had gone a little darker.
Two groups will sing in the Ultimate Sing Off and they are Street Corner Renaissance and The Filharmonic. They sing “Na Na Na Kiss Him Goodbye” by Steam. A song the Filharmonic have probably NEVER heard in their lives. They are really breathy. The older gents have this, I think. But they may hang on to the young kids. They have more potential.
Shawn says it’s a really tough choice. The judges save The Filharmonic. Street Corner Renaissance leaves the competition.
