With just 78% of reports in, Season 3 American Idol Winner Fantasia is set to debut near the top of the charts. “The Definition of…” is her 5th studio album since she won Idol back in 2004. She is set to debut third on the sales chart and 4th on the combined chart (SPS/BB200). Since winning Idol, she has become a staple on UAC, had two successful runs on Broadway and her own reality show.
Also on both charts this week is Melanie Martinez. Her “Cry Baby” has legs for days as it is 47th in sales and 38th on SPS. Most albums drift out of the top 50 within weeks (if not days) of debuting, but Melanie has been floating along for months with sales actually getting stronger. That’s how you build a fan base. Representing the third leg of the major reality singing show competition show stool are the women from Fifth Harmony. Their second album, “7/27” is posting strong streaming numbers and already generated two successful singles. This week, it is 28th on the SPS.
Carrie Underwood appears on Keith Urban’s “Ripcord” which is 27th in sales and 43rd on combined. Kelly Clarkson and Zayn have tracks on Now 58 which is 25th in sales (and gets no help from downloads and streams because those are credited to the original albums).
Also worth noting is now famous Idol auditioner Hillary Scott. After two failed bids to get on the show, Hillary formed a band with a couple of dudes (one she recognized in a bar from MySpace and they got to chatting and started working together) which became Lady Antebellum – a very successful Country group with some mainstream cross-over success (like “Need You Now”). That band is on hiatus and Hillary now heads “Hillary Scott and the Scott Family” which released an album this week which is 4th in sales.
DJ Khaled is forcing Drake’s “Views” of the top of the chart this week. Jake Owen is also debuting. The rest of the top 10 are the usual suspects.
