Rumor: Barry Weiss to Leave Sony For UMG?

An interesting bit of goss from Hits Daily Double for you numbers nerds to chew over:

Following weeks of rumormongering, many inside Sony and UMG now believe that Barry Weiss will take a key job within Lucian Grainge’s revamped East Coast operations. Grainge has reportedly been telling his New York label heads there will be someone in place between himself and them, and conventional wisdom suggests this someone will be the current RCA/Jive chief. According to Sony sources, Weiss’ deal is up in June, but are there other factors at work that could lead to a possible early exit prior to the announcement of Rolf Schmidt-Holtz’s replacement?

  1. If this is true, I’m hoping that might be better for Adam & Kris. Personally, I’d like to see a little better handling of their albums, especially where singles are concerned.

  2. Oh my. Really? Hmmm.

    **strokes chin**

This is gonna get good. But, it might throw the RCA/Jive people into chaos for a bit.

  3. This rumor has been around for a while. He is also rumored to be on the short list for the SME US Head slot. UMG would be a better position prob.

I think that RCA has done a great job for Adam — except for the single choice mess last November. But Barry Weiss was prob not actively involved in selecting singles for Adam. He was clearly involved directly with Adam’s launch since the beginning, attended Adam’s private b’day party and even did an interview for the E! THS on Adam.

Barry clearly and affirmatively supported Adam but Adam is now established at RCA and within Sony. So he should not be effected if Barry Weiss leaves.

And there is no indication that Barry Weiss has been actively engaged in Kris’ launch at all. And I also can’t imagine that he had anything to do with picking Kris’s singles. But Kris’ got LLWD — a big single — and even that didn’t really drive album sales. Partly because it had little to do with the rest of the album.

If Barry Weiss leaves RCA/Jive, he may well be replaced by a Finance exec. rather than someone with a talent development background. That would be a bad thing for any artist on the roster who isn’t making money for the label.

ETA: I do not think that Weiss leaving would throw RCA/Jive or SME into chaos. It has not been churning out tons of huge hits lately so new leadership might be needed.

  4. When Barry Weis originally took that position, the buzz was that he understood how to utilize the new opportunities in the digital age – and Clive did not – although IMO – there were still some bumps in the road. But if the rumor proves out – I’ll be interested in who replaces him, and what is their area of expertise.

  5. I can’t help but wonder if this might be farther reaching than Weiss just changing jobs. There have been a few rumors floating around that Sony Music may get reorganized. This is just a wild guess, but it would be quite a deal if Sony were to spin off RCA/Jive and sell both of those labels to UMG. Stranger things have happened.

  6. I wonder if this had any connection to some of RCA’s artists’ releases getting pushed into Qtr4?
