No Glee Concert Tour This Year

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that unlike the past two summers, the Glee cast will not be hitting the road on a summer concert tour. Instead, they will get a proper 2 1/2 month hiatus like most normal human beings working in Network television.

Despite the Glee tour selling out nearly all its dates last year, Ryan Murphy was reportedly instrumental in getting the kids the summer off.

But, while the Glee tour was profitable, the subsequent concert movie flopped hard. Produced for an estimated $9 million, it opened to a disappointing $5.7 million at the domestic box office in August.  And, with the ratings off by double digits this season, there is no guarantee a post-season 3 concert tour would be successful.

The cast, who puts in grueling 12-16 hour days  in recording studios, in dance rehearsals and shooting physically demanding scenes, are probably happy to stay put. A concert tour puts more money in their pockets, but doesn’t really advance their careers. A tour hampers the actors’ efforts to schedule side projects in the hiatus.

To be honest, this news doesn’t surprise me at all.

Instead, Murphy would like to do a one off concert fundraiser at the Hollywood Bowl to raise money for its arts education charity, Glee Give a Note. The goal is to raise 10 million dollars this year.
