Nigel Lythgoe Tweets: SYTYCD Results Show is Cancelled (UPDATED)

Super bad news tweeted by So You Think You Can Dance creator and producer Nigel Lythgoe today:

#FOX have cancelled the results show so I will have to change the format of #SYTYCD. At least we have another season at the end of MAY.

The ratings have been steadily declining for a few years now. And it all started when FOX ran a Season 5 in the summer, and then immediately aired a Season 6 in the fall. Ugh. What were they thinking?

I suspect if Season 9 ratings don’t improve, the show will be cancelled. It’s a pity, because SYTYCD has both introduced average viewers to the world of dance and spotlighted talented dancers from around the country.

Bottom 2 contestants could be announced at the top of the following week’s performance show. Viewers will still be given the opportunity to vote, somehow, I would imagine.

UPDATE: Nigel tweeted later:

“Don’t worry #SYTYCD fans. I’m thrilled we have a new series. We’ll do our best to find some great talent starting next week in Atlanta.”

“I’m certainly not mad at FOX they have supported #SYTYCD FOR 9 seasons. With the help of Mike Darnell I think we have some great new ideas.”
