Monday Morning Mediabase Update: Dec 24-30

Christmas is over. Time to pack up the wrapping paper, tinsel and Christmas songs. AC and CAC begin to return to normal with some massive churn. The Chrismas songs plummet like stones while songs that were prominent prior to December surge back.

Once we sift through all the numbers, there seems to be only two milestones this week. One from Idol and one from X-Factor.

Phil Phillips, the latest American Idol winner, gets into the mix of returning non-Christmas songs and suddenly finds himself in the top 5 of AC. Usually, songs have to sit for a long time outside of the top 5 waiting for AC fans to grow tired of their favourites. But once you are in, you can stay forever. “Home” could still be in the top 10 of AC in May. The song has now gone top 5 in 3 formats (AC, HAC and AAA).

Over on Pop making milestones is X-Factor Season 6 runner-up, Olly Murs. His “Troublemaker” featuring the ever-present Flo Rida has entered the top 40.

Some of the notable returning songs on AC are Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger” (top 3), Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe (top 10), One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” (top 15) and Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Good Time” (top 20).

Over on CAC, Jason Castro’s “Only a Mountain” returns back just outside the top 20 and Colton Dixon’s “You Are” returns to the chart in the top 30 (taking the largest leap of the week from 97th to 26th).
