Monday Morning Mediabase Update – Dec 6-12

The Christmas songs continue their march to world domination. Glee itself has contributed 4 songs to the onslaught and all four of them reached a miletsone of some sort this week. First up to bat is the Wham! classic “Last Christmas” reaching top 5 on AC. The next song with its name in lights is the Broadway Christmas ditty “We Need a Little Christmas” from Mame. Nobody seems to notice that the song’s entire premise is that the people in question need Christmas to start early to lift up their spirits and early for them is one week past Thanksgiving . Clearly, a song set in the twenties because one week past Thanksgiving is probably a bit late for most people to start thinking about Christmas these days. Finally, the two newcomers are “Deck the Rooftops” and “Most Wonderful Time of the Year”, proving that radio will play covers if they are covers of Christmas songs. I wonder how long they’ve been waiting for an excuse to jump on the Glee steamroller?

But, believe it or not, it’s not all about Christmas. Carrie has achieved yet another top 5 Country song with “Mama’s Song”. Have any of her singles failed to reach top 5? I can’t think of any. Quite a run for her. Also, laughing in the face of the Christmas route is Jim Brickman. His song featuring Matt Giraud is defying odds and having a healthy increase on AC. “Thank You” has reached top 20.
