The biopic, Winnie, with Jennifer Hudson in the lead role as the wife of South African leader, Nelson Mandela, opened at the Toronto Film Festival in 2011 to terrible reviews. Even more negative reviews met the film when it opened for a limited run in Canada in 2012.
Now that the movie has a new distributor and is slated for a fall release, an official trailer has been made available. Along with Jennifer in the titular role, Terrance Howard stars as the jailed South African leader, Nelson Mandela, who was eventually freed and became president of the nation.
The overall reaction to Winnie seems to be that it treats its complex subjects with a ton of schmaltz. Winnie went from being a heroine of a nation to suspect, when she was implicated in the death of some youths. After Nelson was released from prison, the couple divorced.
