Idols on Oprah

Simon Cowell and the Top 6 were Oprah Winfrey’s guests today on her show.   Simon answered Oprah’s questions via satellite from  Las Vegas.   His  top 2 Idols are Melinda Doolittle  and Jordin Sparks, but he’s not counting out LaKisha Jones, if she turns in  more performances like her show-stopping “And I Am Telling You” from the semi’s.   He likes Chris Richardson, because he is contemporary, and he thinks Blake Lewis is a pop star.

About the newly-eliminated Sanjaya Malakar, Simon says, “I miss him, probably in the same way as I would miss now my favorite horror movie…I don’t mean that nastily, because I like horror movies. But there’s a kind of like, ‘I hate it, I love it.’ And that’s how I felt about Sanjaya…He was a very sweet guy, quite entertaining, but a horrible singer.”

  1. Well, I guess that Phil fan(s) will have to be happy that Simon remembered to mention Phil’s name for the “good performance mumblety brand new sentence.”

I swear next week they will make Phil share a voting number with someone else.

  2. Yeah, when Melinda said that they all had been favorites at some point I was like……yeah, all but Phil.

He’s got his work cut out for him….and I really hope he brings it again, he was awesome this past week, I’d love to see him do that well again.

  3. HE thinks Blake is a Pop Star! Loved that.. I always knew Simon saw potential in Blake… GO TEAM PLAID.
Next week will be our revenge, he will back in the Top 3 for sure.
    Just wait and see.
    Love ya Blake!

  4. Simon is full of hot air. He should live in the Windy City :)

It was cute to see them together on the show, but it seemed forced. Jordin talked too much.

Sanjaya got the couch on Leno. :) I can’t help but love him. I know how it is to be a weird teen. I give him extra special props. ;)

So are you saying Sanjaya had a proper interview on the Tonight Show instead of just a quick walk-on? I hope someone posts a clip of this on youtube because I missed it! Simon is such an ass. If Sanjaya is a “horrible singer” why did he put him on the show? Ahh, I miss Sanjaya already. I didn’t even get excited about seeing the others on Oprah yesterday. It’s just not the same without Sanjaya. I know he wasn’t the best singer, but he’s NOT “horrible” either. There’s just something about him that I like.

  6. If Sanjaya is a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“horrible singerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ why did he put him on the show? Ahh, I miss Sanjaya already. I didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t even get excited about seeing the others on Oprah yesterday. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just not the same without Sanjaya. I know he wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t the best singer, but heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s NOT à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“horribleà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ either. Thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just something about him that I like.

My feelings exactly. He wasn’t the best, but he brought the entertainment value up so high for me! I was always intrigued of what Sanjaya would do week after week. He wasn’t great, but he definitely wasn’t horrible. I much prefer Sanjaya to some of the other youngins we’ve had on the show in previous years, like Chicken Little. I will miss him and the excitement he gave this season. I feel like we now need a shocker to prevent things from going too dull. I hate season’s where the winner is so clear-cut. Unless Melinda does something entirely stupid, she’s got it in the bag.

And without Sanjaya, Oprah was a bore for me.

  7. I — or we — told you so. American Idol lands with a deadening “clunk” without Sanjaya’s leavening influence.

I bet Oprah’s bookers wish he’s been there for the show.

And my suggestion is, every week till the top 3, have Sanjaya on to sing a song out of competition, like the films get shown at Cannes Film Festival but aren’t in the voting!

  8. This is how bad the Year of Meh is for me. I am not even going to play the Oprah show clip MJ so nicely posted for us here. No interest.

Especially without Sanjaya. I will try to find his interview on Leno, though. I think I recorded Letterman last night by mistake. :rolleyes_wp:

  9. Ladybug, I agree. The remaining contestants are all boring to me. The only reason I am interested in watching next week is to see Kelly Clarkson. I couldn’t care less about the list of guest stars who have absolutely nothing to do with the show.

    At least Sanjaya was entertaining.

  10. I agree with Simon’s top 3. And I’m glad he knows Blake is a star.

    Go Team Plaid! :)

  11. I am deliriously happy that there are some kindred souls on this site who will miss Sanjaya, as I will. Sanje may not have been the best singer but he was certainly the one with charisma. And that commodity is something rare that cannot be bought or taught. It just comes naturally and Sanje has loads of it. The proof of this is the firestorm that has raged on the Net about Sanje, both good and bad. The late, great Dale Earnhardt had it and was both beloved and despised. But you couldn’t ignore him any more than you can ignore Sanje.

If Sanje gets a good voice coach he will turn into something rare. He does have the voice; he just doesn’t know how to control it yet. In the meantime we are stuck with the most dreary, dull and boring Top Six that Idol has ever been saddled with. I’ll watch next week but it depends on how things go whether I will watch after that. The only thing I am looking forward to is next season (maybe a re-incarnation of Season 5 – I knew those kids were going to be a tough act to follow!)

  12. I agree. Sanjaya was the most entertaining youngster ever on American Idol. Paris and Lisa might have had better voices but lacked the charisma. Even this season he might be the least experienced singer but had the most charisma. He’s the only reason I’d go to the concert.

Sigh! Dreary weeks ahead! I hope TPTB have lots of very exciting guest stars lined up.

  13. Kirsten, thank you SO MUCH for the the Leno clip. That was great!! Now I just gotta find the Donny Osmond part! Yeah, that really sux that Sanjaya isn’t going to be on the Idol Gives Back extravaganza. :tongue2_tb: He should be there!!! Can’t we start a petition or something to get him on there? :devil_tb: What I wouldn’t give to see him do a song with Kelly Clarkson AND Carrie Underwood!! :clap_tb:

ETA: I found the Donny Osmond portion!Rickey has it —

  14. Thanks for that clip Kirsten. Sanjaya was, as Jay said, a real class act. He really is a smart, funny, fresh young man and I hope he can get some vocal coaching and make a go of it. I like that kid!

  15. i have big hopes for phil next week. maybe i am naive, but i’m hoping that he just has another incredible performance. he just seems like a good guy and i hate that he is the new pick at “vftw.” he certainly doesn’t have the worst voice, so it’s clearly b/c he doesn’t look the part. sigh.

  16. Blake a Pop Star huh?…………..Thank goodness for Autotune then………he’ll need it…just ask Tim Mcgraw. ;)

  17. Thank you DVLS and Kirsten for the links. Sanjaya was a little out of his element but he will learn his way around soon enough!

  18. Blake’s official download of “When the Stars Go Blue” sounds beautiful. I love that song! :)

  19. Blakeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s official download of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“When the Stars Go Blueà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ sounds beautiful. I love that song! :)

I know pj. I downloaded it and purchased it too. He really has a great recording voice, so smooth.
I really think Blake will sell TONS of records once he puts one out. He is the whole package.

    Go Blake.

  20. I’m anxious to see if they break 40 million viewers this next week with the big show. I’m thinking yes.

  21. I totally agree, pj. I love his recorded voice. It is so beautiful. That song, WTSGB, is one of my top 2 favorite Blake downloads, along with Time of the Season. :) Blake is going to sound great on the radio. I can’t wait. :)

  22. Thanks for posting the Oprah video, mj! I found a video elsewhere but it didn’t include the part with Simon, which I wanted to see.

I liked Oprah’s interview with the Idols. I think this is a very likable group…Melinda comes across as very sweet and charming, and she’s even beginning to look foxy. Phil is quite phunny (see what I did there?) – I’ve gotten a kick out of his humor in all the little random videos that have been popping up on YouTube and such. Jordin is adorable, and Blake is, well, Blake. :blush_tb: Maybe this season isn’t as exciting as last, but I’m still enjoying it, and there a couple of people whose CDs I’d be interested in buying. Blake for sure, and possibly Jordin, depending on what her record ends up sounding like.

  23. I’m kind of hesitant on watching it this week. I hope it is not like a long drawn out telethon. I understand that telethons and charity events are very important, and I do call in and donate……I just don’t want to mix American Idol in with it.

  24. I hope we have the performance of the season, hell of ALL seasons, this week just so all the h8rs can STFU about this “boring, dreary season”. If you don’t enjoy it, why post in a thread about season 6? I’m sorry if I’m a little slow and don’t understand it, but why torture yourselves? And if you WANT to torture yourselves and KNOW you are, don’t complain about it. UGH.

I personally can’t wait to see Blake the Popstar, Jordin the Adorable, Melinda the Pro, and Phil the Phunny (star, I hate you for that… LMAO) on Tuesday.

    (Sorry MJ.)
