Idols In Concert – Stats – 09/22/11

With the last few concerts of the North American leg of the AI Live Tour reporting in the previous week, we may be in for a bit of a dry spell for concert reports for a while. Idols are mostly doing one-offs right now and those don’t always report in. But, we still need our daily numbers thread (so post those interesting numbers). Here are a few articles that may be of interest.

Tony Bennett has become the oldest artist to hit the Hot 100 (Billboard). His duet with Amy Winehouse sold 25K copies last week to reach 87th on the chart. At 85 years and two months, Tony beats out the previous record holder, George Burns, who was exactly a year younger when he charted with “I Wish I Was Eighteen Again” back in 1980. Tony may also be set to have his first number 1 CD next week. (Billboard). It depends on how far Lady Antebellum drops in their second week.

The Universal-Live Nation Deal: What It Means, and What It Probably Doesn’t (Billboard). Live Nation and UMG have formed a partnership. What does it mean, if anything, for Idols. AEG Live normally promotes the Idol tour, but for some reason, 19 switched the tour over to Live Nation for the Season 9 tour. Some felt that Live Nation played a role in the epic failure that became (booking venues that were too large). Also, does it mean anything for Idols signed to UMG? The article states that not much is known about the deal, but perhaps it will mean more synergy between music promotion and concerts (bundling of tickets, merch and UMG content).

What is also interesting is how small a world it is out there. Irving Azoff is the Chairman of Live Music Entertainment and part of this deal. You may also remember that he is the guy that will be managing the X-Factor contestants.
